Building the Framework for Sustainable Tourism in Príncipe Island

Like many other Small Island Developing States, São Tomé and Príncipe’s economy faces major weaknesses and constraints. These challenges are especially marked on the island of Príncipe, owing to its small size and double insularity. In recent decades, tourism, driven by international investment, has become a strategic sector for territorial development. This study assesses the suitability of this exogenous model and explores the feasibility of adopting a progressive change to a more community-centered tourism development model. Extensive fieldwork and multi-stakeholder collaboration have highlighted the need for a holistic, multi-dimensional strategy to secure this change. Such a strategy would prioritize local skills enhancement, infrastructure improvement, better governance and the diversification of tourism products and experiences. The gradual shift to a more endogenous approach in tourism development aims to strengthen sustainability across its multiple dimensions, ensuring more substantial and direct benefits for the local community and adding value to tourist services and experiences.

INCREASING HUMAN CAPACITY IN OPTIMIZING THE MARKETING OF TOURISM PRODUCTS IN THE EDELWEISS FARMERS GROUP, WONOKITRI VILLAGE, PASURUAN

Tourism is an important aspect as part of the government's main focus. Based on the situation analysis, Pasuruan Regency has the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Area (TNBTS) which is the top seven national tourist destinations. Wonokitri Village, Tosari District, Pasuruan Regency is part of the TNBTS Area which is a potential agricultural and plantation area. Apart from offering natural beauty and economic potential in the form of horticultural products from potatoes, cabbage, carrots and onions, Wonokitri Village is also very rich in traditional culture. Wonokitri Village is the only village that has not been touched by foreign investors. However, unfortunately this area has not been developed optimally by the Village Government, including human resource management, finance, tourism product diversification and marketing. So, the main issues raised in this community service activity are related to aspects of production management and business management. Community service with the Binus Bangun Desa scheme aims to increase HR capacity in Destination Management and Optimizing Digital-based Marketing of Tourism Products in the Taman Edelweiss Farmer Group, Wonokitri Village, Tosari District, Pasuruan Regency. The activities that will be carried out in this community service program will apply digital branding including websites and social media content as an effort to digitize and optimize the Edelweiss Park tourist area. This service activity is based on the research of the proposing team lecturers in the previous period. In this community service activity, the service team provides counseling and assistance to partners to be able to implement applications/websites and publications via social media content. This community service is very important to help tourism industry in marketing and distributing services through social media channels. It is hoped that carrying out these community service activities can help tourism be relatively productive.

The relationship between inbound tourism and economic growth: Case of Botswana

AbstractThis study investigates the relationship between inbound tourism expansion and economic growth in Botswana, employing time series data from 1988 to 2019. An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds tests and Toda and Yamamoto causality test were utilized for cointegration and direction of causality analyses, respectively. The study findings suggest and validate a tourism‐led growth hypothesis (TLGH) both in the long and short run. However, inbound tourism expansion has a modest impact on the country's economic growth, which causes concern and need for improvement. Therefore, the study suggests that there should be strengthening and expediting of tourism product diversification for enhanced tourism experiences and tourist spending. The tourism sector should be restructured to curb high economic and financial leakages, create strong linkages with other sectors, and adopt a mixed‐price model to promote domestic tourism and local beneficiation.

Open spaces for co-creation: a community-based approach to tourism product diversification

ABSTRACT Despite generalised global recommendations, local communities are rarely involved in defining strategic tourism development options. Similarly, methodologies to facilitate these processes of co-creation have not been adequately implemented, tested, and generalised. This study aims to contribute to this body of knowledge by assessing the potential of a participatory planning method centred on the strategic diversification of tourism products. Focusing on the Swedish island of Gotland, where tourism dynamics partly depend on the visits to the Hanseatic town of Visby by cruise ships, a workshop based on an Open Space Methodology (OSM) was implemented, involving local entrepreneurs, representatives of organisations, students, and international researchers in tourism (an original contribution). The results revealed that these “coopetition” processes can contribute to identifying problems and determining possible solutions. In our case, these options can be framed within the concept of “penetration” (modifications and increasing promotion of existing products to the existing markets) involving aspects related to physical and digital infrastructures, along with partnerships and collaborations amongst stakeholders. Overall, this study reveals that the interaction between members and non-members of the local community appears crucial for the emergence of innovative ideas.

ASSESSMENT OF THE TOURISM SECTOR IN A HUNGARIAN SPA TOWN: A CASE-STUDY OF HAJDÚSZOBOSZLÓ

Health tourism is defined as a tourism product of strategic importance in Hungary and spa towns are among the most visited destinations in the country. The aims of the present research are to explore the characteristics of the tourism sector in the spa town of Hajdúszoboszló, and to identify the trends having shaped its tourism in the previous decade. Time-series analysis of secondary tourism data as well as a questionnaire survey among visitors were conducted to assess the market position of the spa town. The results imply that both the well-balanced ratio of domestic and international guests and the diversity of international source markets were favourable for the town. In the future, the more efficient diversification of tourism products, the improvement of the MICE sector, and the development of gastronomic, cultural and sport tourism products are recommended.

Trends and Development of Tourism Product Diversification in Botswana: Lessons Learned

Diversifying tourism products is a vital contemporary business strategy for maintaining a competitive advantage in the face of rapid technological, economic and social changes. Tourism in Botswana is largely dependent on wildlife and international tourists and consistent calls to diversify over the past four decades have greatly been amplified by the colossal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. A semi-systematic literature review analyzed progress and research trends related to tourism product diversification in Botswana. Findings revealed that research on diversification is largely qualitative and supply-side focused. It mostly explains reasons for diversification and identifies potential development sites and optional products that could be introduced such as activities related to cultural, heritage and community-based tourism. Tourism product diversification has largely been stalled over the past four decades and is characterized by a deficiency in empirical demand-side research, precise strategies to adopt as well as theoretical and conceptual analyses of diversification that should form the basis for crafting time-specific effective strategies.

Infrastructure development is an essential foundation, as improved connectivity and accommodations facilitate access to Dairi Regency's cultural and natural treasures, fostering tourism and economic growth. The path to a more inclusive and sustainable future is illuminated by community-based tourism (CBT). Engaging local communities in tourism activities and decision-making processes ensures equitable distribution of tourism benefits and enhances the region's authenticity. Diversification of tourism products broadens the audience, welcoming travelers with diverse preferences. The research outlines a structured planning approach, guided by SWOT analysis, enabling adaptive strategies that align with changing circumstances. Balanced spatial development, driven by GIS analysis insights, ensures economic prosperity is distributed evenly across the region. Sustainability and responsible tourism practices underline the importance of ethical and environmentally conscious tourism, contributing to long-term success. Collaboration between the community and government agencies strengthens the region's commitment to collective ownership of economic development. Transparent measurement of economic impact fosters trust and engagement. This research not only unveils the untapped potential of Dairi Regency but also presents a comprehensive roadmap for realizing this potential. It provides insights and strategies for the Tourism and Culture Department, local authorities, and stakeholders to shape a sustainable, inclusive, and culturally rich economic future for the region.

The Need for Greater Diversification of Tourism Products in the Samarkand Region of Uzbekistan

Before the Covid pandemic, Samarkand, Uzbekistan was seen as an emerging, exotic tourist destination. This is because of the growing interest in its historical importance and cultural history which wasstrongly linked with the Great Silk Road. Thisregion wasincluded in a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the name of “Samarkand-Crossroads of Cultures”, and was attracting more foreign tourists each year because of its rich history, magnificent architecture, authentic culture and Islamic buildings. However, with the advent ofthe Covid pandemic,the tourism industry collapsed because its borders were closed to international tourists for a large part of 2020. Only recently, new measures have been implemented to attract international tourists and to make the Samarkand region the tourism hub of Uzbekistan once again. This study used a qualitative research design that involved interviewing 10 tourist operators to determine their opinions about the need for greater diversification of new tourism destinations, assessing their potential and determining the need for the further expansion of tourism development. As a result, several new niche tourism markets were identified that should be developed in order to appeal to different special interest segments of international and domestic tourists.

INNOVATION-DRIVEN OPPORTUNITIES AND SOLUTIONS TO PROMOTE EUROPE-ORIENTED TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN UKRAINE

The article presents an in-depth analysis of innovation opportunities and solutions to promote Europe-oriented tourism development in Ukraine, which is especially relevant given the significant lag in economic indicators of Ukraine's tourism industry against the world tourism leaders. The findings reveal that the tourism industry, as well as in Ukraine, is adapting fast enough to the global challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic and other crisis phenomena and is gradually returning to its normal functioning, even under heavy restrictions. Particular emphasis is put on the growing role of innovative solutions to boost the process of adaptation to new realia. It is argued that tourism innovations and reforms will contribute to promoting both short-term and long-term tourism demand, raise the number of tourism businesses and, consequently, will create more jobs in this sector, along with enhancing the quality and competitiveness of domestic tourism product and increasing the tourism industry share in GDP. The purpose of this article is to identify opportunities to innovate and search for optimal solutions to ensure Europe-oriented vector of tourism development in Ukraine. To attain the research agenda, a range of general research methods have been employed, in particular, analysis and synthesis, monograph methodology, as well as methods of abstraction and concretization. The study asserts that in modern economic settings to secure the European vector in tourism development, there is a vast variety of innovative solutions available to tour operators and travel agents, ranging from radical changes in their management and marketing activities up to diversification of tourism products and customer service models. To facilitate further Europe-oriented development of domestic tourism, a focus is also placed towards the essential role of innovation-driven transformations of a tourist product at the regional level which assume new services, new tourist attractions and travel routes or their modifications, including the use of digital technologies and new tourism types, such as glamping, immersive tourism, fitness tourism, virtual tourism, travel journalism, film tourism, etc. In addition, the study discusses the specifics of backpacking as one of modern innovative tourism trends. It is argued that the key pathway for the tourism industry to innovate is building a single national tourist information base with an easy access and customer-friendly interface. Such an electronic database will combine the capabilities of an interactive travel guide and a marketplace. According to the results of the study, to enhance the Europe-oriented development of the tourism industry in Ukraine, the government should design sound investment and innovation policies that will help to support both nation-wide and regional innovative projects. The summary concludes that the implementation of innovations will contribute to gaining a competitive edge in the global tourism market.

RECREATIONAL TOURISM: PRODUCT PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION

Theoretical fundamentals of product portfolio diversification in the frames of recrea­tional tourism were disclosed. The main attractive properties of recreationaltourism resources were substantiated. The potential advantages and disadvantages of recreation tourism product diversification were investigated. The product portfolio diversification and marketing processes in recreation tourism wereanalyzed via the example of the clinical sanatorium "Kuialnik" and the resort association "Perlyna Chornomoria" located in Odesa region of Ukraine. Conclusion: how could tourism planners and policymakers overcome the barriers to sustainable tourism development in the small island developing state of North Cyprus?

PurposeThis theme issue sought to find answers to the question: How could tourism planners and policymakers overcome the barriers to sustainable tourism development in the small island developing state of North Cyprus? The purpose of this paper is to draw on the collaborative work of tourism academics and practitioners featured in this issue.Design/methodology/approachA thematic analysis of the articles in this collection draws together the key outcomes related to the strategic question, with particular reference to the contribution to knowledge, policy and practice and the implications for further applied research in relation to sustainable tourism development in North Cyprus and small island developing states (SIDS) more generally.FindingsThe main finding is that insufficient and/or ineffective collaboration is one of the main obstacles in managing sustainable tourism in North Cyprus. More diversification of tourism products and better conservation of natural, cultural, economic and environmental resources are also needed. It is argued that this can be achieved through planning and policy improvements that focus on facilitating sustainable tourism development.Originality/valueThis paper reflects on the strategic question discussed in this theme issue, and it contains a descriptive analysis of the results and recommendations for policymakers and tourism sector practitioners. The recommendations include: the development of sustainable tourism practices by harnessing technological advances and by raising the awareness of policymakers and tourism stakeholders. This paper and the collection of articles that it draws on, is the first to explore different academic and practitioner perspectives on ways of overcoming obstacles and managing and developing sustainable tourism in the SIDS of North Cyprus.

Introduction. A list of countries has been compiled that from January 1, 2020, will introduce a 30-day visa-free regime for their citizens. A working group has been created to study the state of roads and roadside infrastructure along the Tourist Highway of Uzbekistan. Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on measures to further develop the tourism industry in the Republic of Uzbekistan in order to dramatically increase the number of foreign citizens entering the country, as well as in accordance with the main directions of the tourism concept. Ecotourism resilience: The case of Mahenye community project, Chipinge District, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has endured economic, socio-political and biophysical environmental changes that have resulted in ecotourism facing significant challenges. The Mahenye community ecotourism project has however, managed to withstand these challenges over time. This research sought to analyse the factors influencing the resilience of community ecotourism at Mahenye, Chipinge District, southeast Zimbabwe from 1982 to 2020. Research methods included desktop research, key informant interviews, critical content analysis, observations and researchers’ prior knowledge about Mahenye. The factors influencing ecotourism resilience at Mahenye included resource richness and attractiveness, tourism-product diversification, intra-communal cohesiveness, social energy, a supportive private sector and non-governmental organizations and management of risk factors. These factors ensured that the venture remained operational despite socio-economic, political and biophysical change. It is hoped the resilience lessons and experiences from Mahenye can be shared and adapted to enhance the success of other similar ecotourism ventures under changing operating environments.

Challenges and Opportunities to Sustainable Sport Tourism Events: Insights from an Urban Host City

Sports tourism is viewed as an ideal tool for supporting the livelihood of the host communities in developing countries. As an alternative way of involving the host community in tourism activities, sports tourism aims to enable the hosts to earn income from tourism. Sports tourism events have been hosted in the country for decades but still facing challenges that has hauled its growth process. This article will shade light on the challenges and opportunities of hosting sports tourism in Nairobi as a way of enhancing sustainable tourism development. A cross-sectional research design is used in the study, 404 respondents form the sample size of the study. Questionnaires and interviews are used to collect data from informants in three stadia that frequently host sports tourism events. Descriptive, thematic analysis and inferential statistics are used for data analysis. Findings indicate that major challenges facing the hosting of sports tourism event are; poor planning, policy issues and security. Results also show that the main opportunities for sports tourism events are boosting of domestic tourism, diversification of tourism products and marketing of host cities. Key recommendations are made to policy makers to craft policies that will spur sustainable sports tourism development. THE GEORGIAN RESORTS AS A BASIS FOR WELLNESS TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Political, economic, social and ecological changes that have taken place in the world in recent decades have brought about the increase of population's demand for wellness tourism. At present, wellness tourism is the fastest growing and most significant segment of the world tourism industry, with double growth rate, compared with the growth rate of the tourism industry as a whole, each customer spending 53percent more than a typical international tourist. Though wellness tourism is a global phenomenon, its implementation is predominantly localized in the resorts with the appropriate natural conditions and infrastructure. Natural resources have been used in Georgia for health care and wellness since time immemorial. Based on the diversity of this country's natural conditions, 103 sites were given the legal status of resorts, and up 200 are defined as resort areas. Still, the awareness of Georgia's capacity in this aspect is low worldwide. Due to the crisis of the 1990-s and the civil war, part of the resorts were destroyed; another part is located in the occupied territories and to date is outside the Georgian government's jurisdiction. Though the industry's recovery began in the 2000-s, the pace of the health tourism's development lags behind that of other kinds of tourism. According to the infrastructure's present condition and developmental trends, four groups of resorts can be highlighted in Georgia. In the future, upgrading of the legal framework, further development of the resorts' infrastructure, targeted diversification of tourism products, more flexible, high-quality system of services, and improved resort management will create conditions for wellness tourism advancement in Georgia, which, in turn, will establish it in the world tourism industry.

Traveler Motivation and Destination Loyalty: Visiting Sacred Places in Central Asia

Visiting sacred spaces is becoming a growing trend in tourism in the Central Asian region. Sacred sites are said to have the power to heal the body, enlighten the mind, and inspire the heart. This study explored the motivations for visiting sacred spaces among tourists from three Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The study used a sequential mixed methods research design. In the first stage, a general list of motivations was produced, based on the analysis of 14 semi-structured interviews. The second stage quantitative survey was conducted with a sample of 211 tourists from Central Asia. Data collection took place during tours to sacred sites in the city of Turkestan in South Kazakhstan. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and regression analysis. The relationships between motivation factors and destination loyalty were tested. The results show that among the five motivational factors identified in this study, only three (Spiritual and Religious Motives, Cultural and Historical Motives, and Wellness and Healing) have a significant relationship with sacred site destination loyalty. The remaining two factors (Nature, Fun, and Social Contact) have not been proven to have a significant relationship with destination loyalty. The study adds value to the literature on traveling to religious sites, especially those in formerly atheist countries, and provides recommendations to practitioners and policymakers to enable them to develop a niche tourism area by segmenting tourists’ motivations and destination loyalty in their sacred places. It also contributes to the diversification of tourism products in those destinations that have historical religious heritage resources.

Agrarian tourism as a factor in the socio-economic development of rural areas

The entrepreneurial nature of tourism has a positive impact on the development of rural areas through creation of tourism infrastructure and diversification of related and supporting industries. The article presents the results of an online survey of the population of the Krasnodar Territory. The study confirms the hypothesis that the development of agrarian tourism in the Krasnodar Territory is a strategic vector that reduces the percentage of migration of the rural population, has a stimulating effect on rural infrastructure, and it also contributes to creation of added value, the use of innovations, diversification of tourism products, it acts as a kind of guarantor of the fact that the maximum profit will remain in the local economy, which, in turn, will have a beneficial effect on the socio-economic development of rural areas. The development of agricultural tourism will contribute to the revival of folk crafts, culture and identity, the preservation, effective use and development of the potential of the countryside, the solution of socio-economic problems, overcoming the economic, social and spiritual crisis of rural municipalities. Integration of agriculture and tourism will positively affect the competitiveness of rural areas, the well-being of rural residents and the strengthening of the country’s agriculture as a whole.

This article has the basic objective of assessing the potential, current situation and proposing solutions for sustainable tourism development in Northwest region of Vietnam. The main research methods are: Theoretical research - general analysis of documents and datasets; and Field research. This article has assessed the potential for both the natural potential and the cultural potential for tourism development; and analyzed the current situation and proposed solutions to develop tourism in a sustainable manner. Some of the most important solutions for sustainable tourism development are: high quality human resource training, investment in infrastructure construction capital, technical facilities for tourism, diversification of tourism products, environmental protection, good propaganda, and promotion of products and destinations as a whole better exploit the tourism potential of the region.

Van’ın Edremit ilçesinde turizmin gelişimi: Rezilyans ve değişim

Turizm hem gelişmekte olan hem de gelişmiş ülkeler için önemli bir istihdam yaratma ve katma değer üretme kaynağıdır. Gelişmekte olan ülkeler açısından turizmin gelişimi özellikle bölgesel ekonomik, sosyal ve kültürel dengesizliklerin ortadan kaldırılması noktasında da önemlidir. Ancak, gelişim ve kalkınma sürecinin doğrusal bir ivme ile devam etmesi çoğu zaman beklenemez. Bunun sosyal, politik, doğal ve çevresel nedenleri olabilmektedir. Bu araştırmada, Turizm Coğrafyası araştırmalarında son yıllarda kullanılan ve beklenilmeyen durumlara karşı yerel toplumların geliştirmeleri beklenilen “rezilyans” teorisi ile turizm ilişkisi ele alınmaktadır. Bu çerçevede, daha önce turizmin gelişmesi noktasında farklı olumsuz (deprem, terör, ekonomik istikrarsızlık) gibi durumlara maruz kalmış olan Van’ın Edremit ilçesi örnek alan olarak seçilmiştir. Araştırma’da veriler nitel araştırma stratejisine bağlı olarak yüz yüze mülakatlar aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda, yerel sektör temsilcilerinin Edremit ilçesindeki turizmin gelişimi ile değişimi sürecinde adaptasyonları eleştirel bir boyutta değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışma, özellikle rezilyans teorinin turizmle ilişkisinin yerel aktörler aracılığıyla ortaya konulması noktasında literatürde önemli bir boşluğu dolduracağı düşünülmektedir. Çalışma sonucunda, yerel işletmelerin ve sektör temsilcilerinin değişen sürece yönelik bakış açılarının olumlu olduğu, turistik ürünlerin çeşitlendirilmesi ve yenilikçi bir perspektifle sunulması noktasında fikir birliği içerisinde olduklarını ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bununla birlikte, işbirliği, birlikte hareket etme, katılımcı yönetim gibi zorlukların ise rezilyans bir turizm toplumu olma noktasında zayıf yönlerinin olduğu görülmektedir
