Optimizing smart microgrid performance: Integrating solar generation and static VAR compensator for EV charging impact, emphasizing SCOPE index

The rapid global increase in electric vehicle (EV) usage, driven by its low CO2 emissions, uncomplicated maintenance, and minimal operating costs, has prompted extensive research in the field of electric vehicle charging station (EVCS). The integration of EVCS into the current distribution grid poses challenges due to potential power losses and voltage variations beyond acceptable limits. This complexity is heightened by the growing penetration of randomly dispersed solar-based distributed generation (SDG) and battery energy storage system (BESS). To address these challenges, distribution static VAR compensator (DSVC) systems have been introduced, offering benefits such as enhanced power transfer capacity, improved voltage regulation, and increased system security without requiring extensive infrastructure upgrades. This study offers SCOPE, a novel multi-objective framework that unifies the optimization goals of minimizing real power loss, lowering bus voltage variation, maximizing system voltage stability, minimizing system operating costs, and mitigating CO2 emissions. The EVCS problem is optimized within this multi-objective framework utilizing an improved bald eagle search algorithm (IBESA). The proposed model accounts for vehicle to grid (V2G) capabilities and the actual driving patterns of users over a 24-h horizon. The formulation of a smart microgrid (SMG) structure is based on modifying the standard IEEE 33-bus test radial distribution network (RDN), comprising three interconnected SMGs serving residential, commercial, and industrial users. The optimization approach based on IBESA is utilized to optimize both the siting and capacity of EVCS as well as renewable energy sources (RESs). The findings show that SDG and DSVC are effective at lowering the SCOPE index, highlighting the advantages of the suggested approach.

Multi-Objective Optimal Allocation of Hybrid Photovoltaic Distributed Generators and Distribution Static Var Compensators in Radial Distribution Systems Using Various Optimization Algorithms

In recent years, considerable growth was about the integration of renewable energy sources in the Radial Distribution Systems (RDS), as Photovoltaic Distributed Generators (PVDG) due to their importance in achieving plenty desired technical and economic benefits. Implementation of the Distribution Static Var Compensator (DSVC) in addition to the PVDG would be one of the best choices that may provide the maximum of those benefits. Hence, it is crucial to determine the optimal allocation of the devices (PVDG and DSVC) into RDS to get satisfactory results and solutions. This paper is devoted to solve the allocation problem (locate and size) of hybrid PVDG and DSVC units into the standards test systems IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus RDSs. Solving the formulated problem of the optimal integration of hybrid PVDG and DSVC units is based on minimizing the proposed Multi-Objective Function (MOF) which is represented as the sum of the technical-economic parameters of Total Active Power Loss (TAPL), Total Reactive Power Loss (TRPL), Total Voltage Deviation (TVD), Total Operation Time (TOT) of the overcurrent relays (OCRs) installed in the RDS, the Investment Cost of PVDGs (ICPVDG) and the Investment Cost of DSVCs (ICDSVC), by applying various recent metaheuristic optimization algorithms. The simulation results reveal the superiority and the effectiveness of the Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA) in providing the minimum of MOF, including minimization of the power losses until 16.209 kW, and 12.11 kVar for the first RDS, 4.756 kW and 7.003 kVar for the second RDS, enhancing the voltage profiles and the overcurrent protection system. Moreover, the ability to reach the optimal allocation of PVDG and DSVC and maintain the voltage profiles in the allowable limit, whatever the load demand variation.

A Gradient-Based Optimizer with a Crossover Operator for Distribution Static VAR Compensator (D-SVC) Sizing and Placement in Electrical Systems

A gradient-based optimizer (GBO) is a recently inspired meta-heuristic technique centered on Newton’s gradient-based approach. In this paper, an advanced developed version of the GBO is merged with a crossover operator (GBOC) to enhance the diversity of the created solutions. The merged crossover operator causes the solutions in the next generation to be more random. The proposed GBOC maintains the original Gradient Search Rule (GSR) and Local Escaping Operator (LEO). The GSR directs the search to potential areas and aids in its convergence to the optimal answer, while the LEO aids the searching process in avoiding local optima. The proposed GBOC technique is employed to optimally place and size the distribution static VAR compensator (D-SVC), one of the distribution flexible AC transmission devices (D-FACTS). It is developed to maximize the yearly energy savings via power losses concerning simultaneously different levels of the peak, average, and light loadings. Its relevance is tested on three distribution systems of IEEE 33, 69, and 118 nodes. Based on the proposed GBOC, the outputs of the D-SVCs are optimally varying with the loading level. Furthermore, their installed ratings are handled as an additional constraint relating to two compensation levels of 50% and 75% of the total reactive power load to reflect a financial installation limit. The simulation applications of the proposed GBOC declare great economic savings in yearly energy losses for the three distribution systems with increasing compensation levels and iterations compared to the initial case. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed GBOC is demonstrated compared to several techniques, such as the original GBO, the salp swarm algorithm, the dwarf mongoose algorithm, differential evolution, and honey badger optimization.

Optimal sizing and placement of D-SVC in radial distribution systems using an exhaustive analytical search

Throughout the past few decades, the share of distributed generation in power systems has increased continuously. This increasing trend coupled with the continuous demand growth in the distribution systems started a shift towards heavier reactive power consumption. The latter paved the way for the development of advanced operational and planning algorithms for power distribution systems. Following these trends in the distribution systems, the distribution grids must be developed with greater reliability and flexibility, i.e. smart grids. Consequently, the implementation of smart technologies instead of traditional ones should be considered wherever feasible. This paper presents an approach for optimal placement, economic sizing, and operation point search of distribution static VAR compensator (D-SVC) using an exhaustive analytical search. The proposed algorithm introduces quite a few novelties, unique, superior, and repetitive results presented on a distribution test system IEEE 69.

Feasibility Study of Wind Farm Grid-Connected Project in Algeria under Grid Fault Conditions Using D-Facts Devices

The use of renewable energy such as wind power is one of the most affordable solutions to meet the basic demand for electricity because it is the cleanest and most efficient resource. In Algeria, the highland region has considerable wind potential. However, the electrical power system located is this region is generally not powerful enough to solve the problems of voltage instability during grid fault conditions. These problems can make the connection with the eventual installation of a wind farm very difficult and inefficient. Therefore, a wind farm project in this region may require dynamic compensation devices, such as a distributed-flexible AC transmission system (D-FACTS) to improve its fault ride through (FRT) capability. This paper investigates the implementation of shunt D-FACTS, under grid fault conditions, considering the grid requirements over FRT performance and the voltage stability issue for a wind farm connected to the distribution network in the Algerian highland region. Two types of D-FACTSs considered in this paper are the distribution static VAr compensator (D-SVC) and the distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM). Some simulation results show a comparative study between the D-SVC and D-STATCOM devices connected at the point of common coupling (PCC) to support a wind farm based on a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) under grid fault conditions. Finally, an appropriate solution to this problem is presented by sizing and giving the suitable choice of D-FACTS, while offering a feasibility study of this wind farm project by economic analysis.

DSP-controlled laboratory prototype of 4 bus rds with dstatcom for voltage regulation

This paper reports the development of a prototype of 4 bus Radial Distribution System (RDS) with shunt connected Distribution Static Var Compensator (DSTATCOM) capable of voltage regulation. Digital signal processor TMS320F2812TM is selected due to its analog/digital input-output compatibility, high speed and cost effective. Use of PI Controlled inverter as the power stage of the Voltage Source Controlled (VSC) based DSTATCOM generates required compensation to improve voltage regulation. The experimental studies are carried out and results are discussed.

Modeling and Simulation of Three Phase D-SVC for Load Compensation

The transmission of electric power has to take place in the most efficient way in addition to providing flexibility in the process. Flexible A.C. Transmission System (FACTS) promotes the use of static controllers to enhance the controllability and increase the power transfer capability. Providing reactive shunt compensation with shunt-connected capacitors and reactors is a well-established technique to get a better voltage profile in a power system. Shunt Capacitors are inexpensive but lack dynamic capabilities, thus some form of dynamically controlled reactive power compensation becomes essential. In this paper, three phase Distribution Static Var Compensator (D-SVC) has been developed and studied under different conditions. Open loop mode and closed loop mode of operation of D-SVC is simulated and studied. The work presented here is very much useful for distribution system, for effective reactive power management and better Voltage control.

Design of intelligent control for stabilization of microgrid system

This paper proposes a design of robust intelligent control for stabilization of grid-connected microgrid (MG) system, consisting of photovoltaic (PV), wind power (WP), and fuel cell (FC). Since intermittent power generations from WP and PV sources are unpredictable and variable, these result in power fluctuations in a MG. To stabilize power fluctuations, an intelligent controller was proposed, which consists of the modified general regression neural network (GRNN) and the radial basis function network-sliding mode (RBFNSM) for stabilization control of microgrids incorporating PV and wind generation. With proper control, a distribution static var compensator (SVC) integrated with MG is able to significantly enhance the dynamic security of the power system. Simulation studies have been done to verify the performance and robustness of the proposed method against various loading conditions and it is found that the designed control scheme enhances the stability.

Study on Interactions of DFACTS Devices Operating in Distribution System

As distribution flexible AC transmission system (DFACTS) technology is an economic and effective means to improve the power quality, the applied DFACTS devices are increasing. Therefore, the interactions among the DFACTS controllers should be considered. The paper establishes the linearized model of a single-load infinite-bus distribution system installed with a distribution static var compensator (DSVC) and a distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM), and the system transfer function can be obtained based on this model. Then, uses the relative gain matrix (RGA) method to analyze the interactions under different electrical parameters, drawing a conclusion that the interactions w ill be weakened when the electrical distances are increased and vice versa. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and the RGA method.
