The distribution of particulate organic matter in the heterogeneous soil matrix - Balancing between aerobic respiration and denitrification

Denitrification, a key process in soil nitrogen cycling, occurs predominantly within microbial hotspots, such as those around particulate organic matter (POM), where denitrifiers use nitrate as an alternative electron acceptor. For accurate prediction of dinitrogen (N2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from denitrification, a precise quantification of these microscale hotspots is required. The distribution of POM is of crucial importance in this context, as the local oxygen (O2) balance is governed not only by its high O2 demand but also by the local O2 availability.Employing a unique combination of X-ray CT imaging, microscale O2 measurements, and 15N labeling, we were able to quantify hotspots of aerobic respiration and denitrification. We analyzed greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes, soil oxygen supply, and the distribution of POM in intact soil samples from grassland and cropland under different moisture conditions. Our findings reveal that both proximal and distal POM, identified through X-ray CT imaging, contribute to GHG emissions. The distal POM, i.e. POM at distant locations to air-filled pores, emerged as a primary driver of denitrification within structured soils of both land uses. Thus, the higher denitrification rates in the grassland could be attributed to the higher content of distal POM. Conversely, despite possessing compacted areas that could favor denitrification, the cropland had only small amounts of distal POM to stimulate denitrification in it. This underlines the complex interaction between soil structural heterogeneity, organic carbon supply, and microbial hotspot formation and thus contributes to a better understanding of soil-related GHG emissions.In summary, our study provides a holistic understanding of soil-borne greenhouse gas emissions and emphasizes the need to refine predictive models for soil denitrification and N2O emissions by incorporating the microscale distribution of POM.

Organic matter composition and stability in estuarine wetlands depending on soil salinity

Coastal wetlands are key players in mitigating global climate change by sequestering soil organic matter. Soil organic matter consists of less stable particulate organic matter (POM) and more stable mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM). The distribution and drivers of MAOM and POM in coastal wetlands have received little attention, despite the processes and mechanisms differ from that in the upland soils. We explored the distribution of POM and MAOM, their contributions to SOM, and the controlling factors along a salinity gradient in an estuarine wetland. In the estuarine wetland, POM C and N were influenced by soil depth and vegetation type, whereas MAOM C and N were influenced only by vegetation type. In the estuarine wetland, SOM was predominantly in the form of MAOM (> 70 %) and increased with salinity (70 %–76 %), leading to long-term C sequestration. Both POM and MAOM increased with SOM, and the increase rate of POM was higher than that of MAOM. Aboveground plant biomass decreased with increasing salinity, resulted in a decrease in POM C (46 %–81 %) and N (52 %–82 %) pools. As the mineral amount and activity, and microbial biomass decreased, the MAOM C (2.5 %–64 %) and N pool (8.6 %–59 %) decreased with salinity. When evaluating POM, the most influential factors were microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Key parameters, including MBC, DOC, soil salinity, soil water content, aboveground plant biomass, mineral content and activity, and bulk density, were identified as influencing factors for both MAOM abundance. Soil water content not only directly controlled MAOM, but together with salinity also indirectly regulated POM and MAOM by controlling microbial biomass and aboveground plant biomass. Our findings have important implications for improving the accumulation and increased stability of soil organic matter in coastal wetlands, considering the global sea level rise and increased frequency of inundation.

Source, composition, and reactivity of particulate organic matter along the Changjiang Estuary salinity gradient and adjacent sea

The sources, distribution, and fate of particulate organic matter (POM) in estuaries are dynamic and complex, influenced by highly intensive human activities and high productivity. In this study, water samples were collected along the Changjiang Estuary salinity gradient and adjacent sea (CEAS) in February and May 2017. Particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), the δ13C isotope values and major biochemical constituent (total particulate amino acids, TPAA) were measured. The concentrations of POC, PN, and TPAA showed an overall decreasing trend from the river end-member to the open sea; however, their maximum always occurred around the turbidity maximum zone (TMZ). Concentrations of POC and TPAA showed a negative correlation with salinity and a positive correlation with chlorophyll a, indicating that the variation in POM concentrations and composition was mainly controlled by both terrigenous input and in situ phytoplankton production. The δ13C values gradually increased from the river mouth to the open sea in both winter and spring, in contrast to the molar C/N, reflecting the transition from terrestrial POC to phytoplankton-derived fresh POC with increasing salinity. Major biochemical indicators of TPAA/POC (%) and the degradation index (DI), showed a gradual shift towards more bioactive POM with increasing salinity in spring, although low TPAA/POC (%) values appeared within the TMZ. In spring, POC reactivity was higher than in winter. The proportions of glycine (Gly) and serine (Ser) were higher in winter, indicating that POM had suffered extensive degradation. Based on a two end-member mixing model, the contribution of marine POC in spring (53 ± 14%) was significantly greater than in winter (39 ± 19%), indicating that phytoplankton-derived POM was dominant in spring, associated with the increase in phytoplankton biomass from winter to spring. Based on mass balance, a box model showed evidence of a net POC sink over the Changjiang estuary and its adjacent East China Sea shelf in both winter and spring, with a net POC budget of 20.49 ± 7.01 and 15.87 ± 6.57 kmol s−1, respectively. Results illustrate that the spatio-temporal distribution of POM varies distinctively and will further affect the variability in its composition and reactivity in the CEAS.

Distribution and sources of particulate organic matter from the anthropogenically disturbed Iyidere River to the Black Sea coast

Understanding the biogeochemical processes of particulate organic matter occurring in the river under anthropogenic disturbances and its transport to the coastal system is important for environmental resource management. In this study, we investigated the sources and distribution of particulate organic matter (POM) from the upper reaches of the Iyidere River, Türkiye, to the coastal water of the Black Sea during the fall and spring seasons using the elemental (POC and PON (%), C/N), isotopic (δ13C and δ15N), and Bayesian mixing model (MixSIAR) analysis. The POC (%), PON (%), and C/N of POM varied seasonally, indicating that the composition of POM varied with river hydrology, which varies depending on the climate of the region. Both the mixing model and the isotopic and elemental ratios of POM have revealed that the organic matter sources contributing to the riverine of POM, during the fall season, when the precipitation is severe, exhibited a uniform distribution. Heavy rain increased soil erosion along the high-slope land, and as a result, soil and bacteria were identified as the main contributor of POM along the Iyidere River. The results showed that the organic matter sources contributing to POM in the spring season showed significant spatial variation. Terrestrial vegetation, soil OM, and bacteria were the main contributors of POM depending on sites, and these contributions did not show a regular trend along the river. δ15N of POM had significant spatial variation in both seasons that was likely caused by nitrogen inputs derived from anthropogenic activities along the river. The anthropogenic activities and cascade dams causing variations in the contribution of organic matter to the POM are the likely important driving factors in this river-coastal system.

Palynomorph composition and palynofacies analysis of the Cenomanian Bahariya Formation in the north Western Desert of Egypt: Depositional palaeoenvironment and sequence stratigraphic implications

Abstract This study investigates the Bahariya Formation using 39 rock-cutting samples from the Abu Gharadig Basin in the north Western Desert, Egypt. An approach combining palynomorph composition and palynofacies analysis with lithological composition and geophysical gamma ray log values is used to assess biostratigraphic age constraints, prevalent depositional palaeoenvironments, and relative sea level changes. A moderately diverse assemblage comprised mainly of terrestrial palynomorphs versus minor content of marine palynomorphs is identified. Marker spore and pollen taxa are used to name three interval zones of early Cenomanian, and early-middle Cenomanian ages. Quantitative distribution of particulate organic matter using cluster analysis reveals two palynofacies assemblages: an older assemblage dominated by phytoclasts (mainly wood particles); and a younger assemblage characterised by moderate abundances of amorphous organic matter and phytoclasts. Palynofacies analysis suggests deposition of the Bahariya Formation in fluvio-deltaic to inner neritic shelf environments. Based on the pronounced stratigraphic variations in the particulate organic matter composition, including terrestrial:marine palynomorph ratio, lithological and gamma-ray log data, three complete transgressive-regressive sequences and one incomplete sequence and their systems tracts are defined. The transgressive-regressive trends reflect 3rd order sequences. Additionally, successive changes in relative sea level indicate a continuous rise at the topmost part of the succession.

Interannual variability in particulate organic matter distribution and its carbon stable isotope signatures from the western Indian shelf waters

Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC, PN, collectively particulate organic matter, POM) and the stable isotopic signature of POC (δ13CPOC) are important to delineate its sources and recycling in shelf water. The present study provides insights into the factors responsible for spatial and interannual variability in POM and δ13CPOC values along the western Indian shelf waters (8° N –21° N) during the southwest (SW) monsoon (August) 2017 and 2018. The dominance of phytoplankton-derived POM with a negligible terrestrial influence was evident from the positive correlation between POC and TChla contents, ratios of C: N, and δ13CPOC signatures. Prominent upwelling signatures [cold nutrient-rich water, higher POM, total Chlorophylla (TChla), and δ13CPOC values] were noted in the south (8–12° N), whereas low nutrient warm waters (lower values of POM, TChla, and δ13CPOC) were prevalent in the north (13–21° N). Phytoplankton biomass was significantly higher and matured in 2017 due to an early and stronger upwelling in the south. In 2018, delayed and weak upwelling (evident from Ekman offshore transport and pumping velocity) resulted in the late development of phytoplankton bloom and lower POM. Furthermore, considerably lower nutrient supply within the mixed layers in 2018 compared to 2017 was partially attributed to the enhanced spatial expansion of low salinity waters closer to the surface. In the north, in 2018, higher wind speeds enhanced vertical mixing resulting in increased nutrient supply and TChla compared to 2017. We conclude that monsoon wind speed in the northern shelf and strength as well as the timing of the upwelling, including freshwater flux in the south, can be the key factors in modulating the interannual variability in POM distribution and δ13CPOC signature in the western Indian Shelf waters.

Effect of Ecosystem Degradation on the Source of Particulate Organic Matter in a Karst Lake: A Case Study of the Caohai Lake, China

The cycle of biogenic elements in lakes is intimately linked with particulate organic matter (POM), which plays a critical role in ecosystem restoration and the control of eutrophication. However, little is known regarding the functionality of ecosystem degradation on the source of POM in the water of a karst lake. To fill this knowledge gap, herein we compared the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of POM prior to and after ecosystem degradation in the karst lake Caohai Lake, located in the southwest of China, and analyzed the source of POM using a combination of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13C–δ15N). Our results showed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and pH values decreased, and the concentrations of POM in water increased by 11% and 31% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. The decrease in the δ13C value of POM was accompanied by the increase in the δ15N value of POM in the water of Caohai lake. Prior to the ecosystem’s degradation, sediment resuspension (28%) and submerged macrophytes (33%) were the dominant sources of POM in lake water. In contrast, sediment resuspension (51%) was the major source of POM after the ecosystem’s degradation. Environmental factors, including DO, turbidity, water depth, and water temperature, that are related to photosynthesis and sediment resuspension are the main factors controlling the spatiotemporal distribution of POM. The resuspension of sediment reduced the transparency of the water, limiting effective photosynthesis, impeding the survival of submerged macrophytes, and, consequently, deteriorating the ecosystem. We propose that the control of sediment resuspension is important for improving the water transparency that creates an appropriate habitat for the restoration of the submerged macrophyte community.

Response of subsoil organic matter contents and physical properties to long‐term, high‐rate farmyard manure application

AbstractApplication of farmyard manure (FYM) is common practice to improve physical and chemical properties of arable soil and crop yields. However, studies on effects of FYM application mainly focussed on topsoils, whereas subsoils have rarely been addressed so far. We, therefore, investigated the effects of 36‐year FYM application with different rates of annual organic carbon (OC) addition (0, 469, 938 and 1875 g C m−2 a−1) on OC contents of a Chernozem in 0–30 cm (topsoil) and 35–45 cm (subsoil) depth. We also investigated its effects on soil structure and hydraulic properties in subsoil. X‐ray computed tomography was used to analyse the response of the subsoil macropore system (≥19 μm) and the distribution of particulate organic matter (POM) to different FYM applications, which were related to contents in total OC (TOC) and water‐extractable OC (WEOC). We show that FYM‐C application of 469 g C m−2 a−1 caused increases in TOC and WEOC contents only in the topsoil, whereas rates of ≥938 g C m−2 a−1 were necessary for TOC enrichment also in the subsoil. At this depth, the subdivision of TOC into different OC sources shows that most of the increase was due to fresh POM, likely by the stimulation of root growth and bioturbation. The increase in subsoil TOC went along with increases in macroporosity and macropore connectivity. We neither observed increases in plant‐available water capacity nor in unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. In conclusion, only very high application of FYM over long periods can increase OC content of subsoil at our study site, but this increase is largely based on fresh, easily degradable POM and likely accompanied by high C losses when considering the discrepancy between OC addition rate by FYM and TOC response in soil.Highlights A new image processing procedure to distinguish fresh and decomposed POM. The increase of subsoil C stock based to a large extend on fresh, labile POM. Potential of arable subsoils for long‐term C storage by large FYM application rates is limited. The increase in TOC has no effect on hydraulic properties of the subsoil.

Particulate Organic Matter Distributions in the Water Column of the Chukchi Sea During Late Summer

AbstractTwo oceanographic cruises were completed in September 2016 and August 2017 to investigate the distribution of particulate organic matter (POM) across the northeast Chukchi Shelf. Both periods were characterized by highly stratified conditions, with major contrasts in the distribution of regional water masses that impacted POM distributions. Overall, surface waters were characterized by low chlorophyll fluorescence (Chl Fl < 0.8 mg m−3) and particle beam attenuation (cp < 0.3 m−1) values, and low concentrations of particulate organic carbon (POC < 8 mmol m−3), chlorophyll and pheophytin (Chl + Pheo < 0.8 mg m−3), and suspended particulate matter (SPM ∼2 g m−3). Elevated Chl Fl and Chl + Pheo (∼2 mg m−3) values measured at mid‐depths below the pycnocline defined the subsurface chlorophyll maxima (SCM), which exhibited moderate POC (∼10 mmol m−3), cp (∼0.4 m−1) and SPM (∼3 g m−3). In contrast, deeper waters below the pycnocline were characterized by low Chl Fl and Chl + Pheo (∼0.7 mg m−3), high cp (>1.5 m−1) and SPM (>8 g m−3) and elevated POC (>10 mmol m−3). POM compositions from surface and SCM regions of the water column were consistent with contributions from active phytoplankton sources whereas samples from bottom waters were characterized by high Pheo/(Chl + Pheo) ratios (>0.4) indicative of altered phytoplankton detritus. Marked contrasts in POM were observed in both surface and middepth waters during both cruises. Increases in chlorophyll and POC consistent with enhanced productivity were measured in middepth waters during the September 2016 cruise following a period of downwelling‐favorable winds, and in surface waters during the August 2017 cruise following a period of upwelling‐favorable winds.

Wintertime particulate organic matter distributions in surface waters of the northern California current system

Semi-automated sampling via the surface underway systems of research vessels was used to explore the distribution and composition of particulate organic matter in surface waters of the northern California Current ecosystem during winter, a poorly studied period that is characterized by downwelling favorable winds and elevated discharge by coastal rivers. New wintertime observations were compared to those measured during a summer cruise characterized by strong upwelling and highly reduced coastal river flows. Particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations in surface waters along the Oregon shelf during winter periods were significantly lower (7.0 ± 5.0 μM) than those measured in the same region during summer (21 ± 25 μM) with similar seasonal contrasts in chlorophyll (Chl) concentrations (1.7 ± 1.7 mg Chl m−3 in winter and 8.7 ± 3.8 mg Chl m−3 in summer). The combination of POC, Chl, and particle beam attenuation (cp) measurements revealed spatial and temporal distributions that confirm the importance of physical drivers such as wind, waves and river discharge in influencing the biogeochemistry of eastern boundary current systems during non-upwelling conditions. Elevated contributions of allocthonous particulate materials with distinct compositional characteristics, including low Chl:POC and POC:cp ratios, were measured during winter in low-density, low-salinity surface waters influenced by coastal river discharge. In contrast, mid-salinity, intermediate-density surface waters exhibited higher concentrations of POM with elevated Chl:POC and POC:cp ratios, which approached those measured during highly productive summer upwelling periods. These results are solid evidence for wintertime phytoplankton productivity along this margin under elevated buoyancy and nutrient contributions from the discharge of coastal rivers.

Diverse origins of “soil marker” bacteriohopanepolyols in marine oxygen deficient zones

Bacteriohopanepolyols (BHPs) that are commonly associated with soil and peat environments (“soil marker” BHPs), were analyzed along redox gradients in marine oxygen deficient zones (ODZs). The latter included suspended particulate organic matter (POM) from two fjords on Vancouver Island (Canada) and the Black Sea, as well as sinking POM collected in sediment trap time-series deployed in the Cariaco Basin. Our results show that the so-called “soil marker” BHPs occur in all ODZ settings. They have distributions that are best explained by in situ chemotrophic production within the chemocline and in anoxic/euxinic waters, rather than exclusive supply from soils. In particular, adenosylhopane, adenosylhopane-type2 and 2Me-adenosylhopane-type2, appear to be produced within a common biogeochemical niche in the water column, irrespective of setting. On the other hand, 2Me-adenosylhopane, adenosylhopane-type3 and 2Me-adenosylhopane-type3 may be supplied partly from the continent, as they are also abundant in surface water suspended POM on Vancouver Island and accumulate almost exclusively in the shallower (upper chemocline) trap in the Cariaco Basin. However, their water column suspended POM distributions and time-series sinking POM fluxes also indicate additional chemotrophic sources that have spatially and temporally diverse origins.Our study suggests that caution is warranted when using “soil marker” BHPs and their associated soil input proxies in ODZ settings, as the diverse microbial community in these settings produces BHP signatures similar to those found in soils.

Regulation of Microbial Activity Rates by Organic Matter in the Ross Sea during the Austral Summer 2017.

The active prokaryotic communities proliferate in the ecosystems of the Antarctic Ocean, participating in biogeochemical cycles and supporting higher trophic levels. They are regulated by several environmental and ecological forcing, such as the characteristics of the water masses subjected to global warming and particulate organic matter (POM). During summer 2017, two polynyas in the Ross Sea were studied to evaluate key-microbiological parameters (the proteasic, glucosidasic, and phosphatasic activities, the microbial respiratory rates, the prokaryotic abundance and biomass) in relation to quantitative and qualitative characteristics of POM. Results showed significant differences in the epipelagic layer between two macro-areas (Terra Nova Bay and Ross Sea offshore area). Proteins and carbohydrates were metabolized rapidly in the offshore area (as shown by turnover times), due to high enzymatic activities in this zone, indicating fresh and labile organic compounds. The lower quality of POM in Terra Nova Bay, as shown by the higher refractory fraction, led to an increase in the turnover times of proteins and carbohydrates. Salinity was the physical constraint that played a major role in the distribution of POM and microbial activities in both areas.

Tracks in the Snow – Advantage of Combining Optical Methods to Characterize Marine Particles and Aggregates

Settling marine aggregates, such as zooplankton fecal pellets and marine snow, transport organic matter from the surface ocean to the deep sea and are largely responsible for the ocean’s sequestration of carbon. However, our understanding of the functioning of the biological pump and the distribution of particulate organic matter in the water column often hinge on limited bulk data from sediment traps, large volume filtration or instantaneous snap-shots from in situ optical systems that only see a small part of the particle and aggregate spectra. We evaluated the added value of combining different optical systems to detect a range of organic and inorganic particle types during a case-study in the Cape Blanc upwelling region. Laboratory calibrations showed that one camera system detected large organic aggregates well and in situ data showed that it correlated positively with fluorescence. The other camera was better at detecting small, mainly inorganic particles which were not seen by the first camera and correlated positively with turbidity. The combined deployments of the two optical systems together with fluorescence and turbidity sensors showed potentials for added insights into spatial (depth) and temporal (diurnal) particle dynamics. The case study exemplified the different efficiencies of two camera systems to detect particles of different types in marine waters. From this, the results highlighted the importance of discriminating between qualitative and quantitative ranges of imaging systems, in order to understand the quantitative range of sizes as well as types of particles detected by a given system. This is especially important when optical systems are used to estimate carbon fluxes and particulate organic matter distribution in the water column from vertical profiles of particle size-distribution and abundance.

The use of amino sugars for assessing seasonal dynamics of particulate organic matter in the Yangtze River estuary

The particulate amino sugars (PAS), organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PN), the chlorophyll a (Chl-a), and the heterotrophic bacterial cell count (HBC) in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) were determined to study the biological source, bioavailability and bacterial contribution of particulate organic matter (POM) under the influence of algal bloom during the spring and autumn of 2017. The contents of PAS were 2.6–69.6 nmol/(mg dw) and made up 5.29 ± 2.55% of POC and 5.39 ± 2.77% of PN. The strong positive correlations between Chl-a and POC, PN and PAS and their similar distributions indicated that phytoplankton was a major source of POM and PAS in the YRE. When algal blooms occurred, the high ratios of glucosamine to galactosamine (GlcN/GalN) (~10.9) and the high carbon and nitrogen normalized yields of PAS (%PAS-POC and %PAS-PN, respectively) clearly indicated the planktonic (especially zooplankton) source of POM, although the high muramic acid (Mur) contents implying high contents of fresh bacterial organic matter (OM) were also found. Additionally, the high proportion of fresh plankton- and bacterial-derived OM indicated that the POM was more labile when algal bloom occurred. In contrast, when the primary production was low, the lower %PAS-POC and GlcN/GalN ratios (< 3) in the POM demonstrated the decreased contribution of planktonic OM and the relatively elevated contribution of bacterial OM. In addition, the higher %PAS-PN and the lower DO concentrations in seawater indicated that the POM experienced some degree of degradation but was still at an early stage in the nearshore site in autumn. In spring, the Changjiang diluted water (CDW) carried considerable plankton-derived POM into the estuary and influenced the distribution of POM. In autumn, the terrestrial OM might become more bacterial-derived and had less influence on the bulk POM of the estuary. The bacterial OM estimated by the Mur accounted for an average of 10.8 ± 3.7% and 40.5 ± 19.1% of the POC in spring and autumn, respectively, which was approximately two times higher than the results based on the heterotrophic bacterial cell count (HBC), indicating that most of the bacterial OM in the POM was detritus. In summary, the content, source and bioavailability of POM were significantly affected by algal bloom and the CDW, and the amino sugars represent a reliable tool to indicate the source and bioavailability of POM.

Particulate organic matter distributions in surface waters of the Pacific Arctic shelf during the late summer and fall season

Climate change is leading to marked decreases in the extent, thickness and persistence of sea ice in Polar Regions, especially during the later summer and fall seasons. The expanded open water domain during this period has the potential to drastically affect the hydrography, biogeochemistry and ecology of Arctic seas. In view of these rapid changes, the distributions of particulate organic matter in surface waters from the Pacific Arctic shelf were determined during the late summer and early fall months (August–October) over four different years (2012, 2015, 2016, and 2017). Utilizing surface underway systems of research vessels in combination with a semi-automated filtration system, over a thousand individual samples from surface waters were collected along the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea shelves. Particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations and molar carbon:nitrogen ratios ([C:N]) were determined to investigate the distribution and provenance of organic matter in surface waters at a high spatial resolution along the research vessels' navigational paths. Corrections for sorption of dissolved carbon and nitrogen were possible at high frequency because of our sampling techniques. The resulting blank-corrected POC concentrations in surface waters ranged from <2 to 35 μM, with several samples collected earlier (August) in the open water season displaying much higher concentrations (>60 μM). Large spatial and temporal variability characterized measurements throughout the study area, with maxima in POC concentration often measured in association with physical features (e.g., straits, capes, fronts, shoals) and strong wind events. Hydrographically, POC distributions displayed significant variability among water masses in the region. Alaska Coastal Water, which was predominant along the southern section of the study area (between Bering Strait and Pt. Hope), displayed the highest POC concentrations whereas Bering-Chukchi Shelf Water and especially Melt Water, which occupied the northern section of the study area (Pt. Hope to Utquiagvik) were characterized by the lowest POC concentrations. Earlier periods (August–September) also were characterized by higher average POC concentrations than later periods (September–October). Overall, most of the samples collected exhibited [C:N] ratios that ranged from 6 to 8 mol:mol, and were consistent with a predominant marine provenance. Our findings indicate POC distributions reflect patterns of wind forcing and physical circulation and identify regions of localized high standing stocks that suggest spatially and temporarily variable production in this area during the late open-water season.

Food Composition for Blue Mussels (Mytilus edulis) in the Menai Strait, UK, Based on Physical and Biochemical Analyses

To clarify the composition of food ingested by blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) in the Menai Strait, where the largest mussel bed in the United Kingdom lies, hydrodynamic observations with organic carbon and nitrogen biochemical analysis were conducted. This strait is characterized by a narrow channel and wide tidal flats with large tidal mixing that influences the distribution of particulate organic matter (POM), which is food formussels. The maximum velocities of the tidal currents were estimated to be 0.5–1.0 m s-1 during northeastward flow and 0.6–1.3 m s-1 during southwestward flow. The residual current was southwestward and the water flux was estimated to be 510 m3 s-1. Field observations indicate that the inflow of pelagic phytoplankton into the strait mainly occurred in the northern region of the strait. Resuspended benthic primary production, however, also causes higher chlorophyll-a concentration in the central region of the strait near the mussel bed and its contribution to mussel growth was estimated to be 22%–50%. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a and particulate organic carbon indicated that the POM in the strait mainly originated from detritus. Benthic microalgae is, however, an important factor to understand the total primary production in the strait. The consumption of the primary producers was estimated to be approximately 6.3 t C day-1. In the phytoplankton community, pelagic and thycopelagic (living in both pelagic and benthic environments) species comprised 59.3%–77.2% and 12.8%–40.7% of the cells, respectively. The primary production by resuspended benthic species in the Liverpool Bay region was considerably larger than that in the Menai Strait region. As a conclusion, theMenai Strait is an area with complex hydrodynamic conditions causing horizontal advection and resuspension of both pelagic and benthic phytoplankton, and this complex would cause the most suitable condition for mussel production.

Integrated palynological, organic geochemical, and sequence stratigraphic analyses of the middle to upper Cenomanian hydrocarbon reservoir/source Abu Roash “G” Member: A depositional model in northwestern Egypt

Abstract The current investigation provides further insight into the petroliferous characteristics of the Abu Roash “G” Member, which is regarded as an important rock unit for the Egyptian oil industry. Forty-seven samples covering the “G” Member were selected from the BED 14-1 and BED 2-4 wells in the Abu Gharadig Basin and from the Abu Tunis 1X well in the Matruh Basin, both of which are located in the north Western Desert. An independent dating of the “G” rocks of BED 2-4 by benthic foraminifera and ostracods, in addition to palynological dating, suggests a middle-late Cenomanian age and provides the biochronostratigraphic framework for the sequence stratigraphic analysis. Analysis of the vertical distribution of particulate organic matter defines three palynofacies types (PF). PF-1 represents the basal “G”, where shales of the BED wells and calcareous shale of Abu Tunis 1X were deposited during a relative sea level rise in an outer middle shelf environment that experienced a notable high primary productivity. Prevailing reducing (suboxic-anoxic) conditions supported preservation of very high amounts of amorphous organic matter (AOM) in PF-1. PF-2 is equated to shales of the middle “G” of BED 14-1 and BED 2-4 and to calcareous shales and limestone of the upper “G” in Abu Tunis 1X. PF-2 was deposited during a relative sea level fall in an inner middle shelf setting under better-developed suboxic-anoxic conditions. PF-3 corresponds to the upper “G” of BED 14-1 and BED 2-4 and represents the shallowest setting, where sandy and silty shales were deposited during a pronounced sea level fall in an inner shelf environment. The same suboxic-anoxic conditions were prevailing during deposition of PF-3. Three bioevents were recorded, which could be of palaeoecological and/or biostratigraphic significance. These are Senegalinium aenigmaticum-Dinopterygium cladoides peak, Dinopterygium cladoides-Dinopterygium alatum peak, and an acme of Classopollis brasiliensis. Sequence stratigraphy of a transect of the four studied sections was carried out to understand the response of the particulate organic matter distribution and depositional system to the sea level changes. Three third-order, depositional genetic sequences were recognized and correlated with the global sea level curve (KCe 2, KCe 3, and KCe 4). The early highstand systems tract (eHST) of the genetically related KCe 3 in all wells is characterized by relatively rich organic matter, where combined remarkably low water circulation and insignificant dilution of organic matter with coarse terrigenous material probably supported good preservation of organic matter. Spatial distribution of the “G” rocks shows lateral facies changes. This was inferred from sedimentation of an organic-poor (avg. 0.8 TOC wt %), coarse clastic (sandy shales) facies in the studied area in Abu Gharadig Basin. Sedimentation changes laterally into a northeast and northwest organic-rich, finer clastic (shale, calcareous shales, and argillaceous limestone) facies in the western Matruh Basin. The robust anoxic conditions and very low dilution of organic matter by terrigenous influx enhanced the organic richness (avg. 2.4 TOC wt %) of these rocks, which resulted in the formation of promising hydrocarbon source rocks. Thus, for a successful hydrocarbon exploration in the north Western Desert, the promising source section of the “G” Member would be associated with shales, calcareous shales, and argillaceous limestone lithologies. Its depositional environment is mainly confined to outer middle and inner middle shelf settings that have widespread suboxic-anoxic conditions and show eHST pattern. In contrast, the regressive intervals that are denoted by the lowstand systems tract (LST) and/or the late HST (lHST) typify the relatively coarse clastics as good quality reservoir rocks that are characterized by poor organic richness due to dilution with terrigenous influx.

Assessing nature and dynamics of POM in transitional environment (the Curonian Lagoon, SE Baltic Sea) using a stable isotope approach

The nature of the particulate organic matter (POM) as well as its temporal and spatial distribution and dynamics in the Curonian Lagoon (south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea) were investigated. The organic matter was characterized by the organic carbon and nitrogen content, δ13C and δ15N signatures as well as POC/Chl-a and C/N ratios. Additionally, data on hydrological, chemical and biological parameters were used for better understanding the POM distribution and dynamics. The sampling was performed at 13 stations in the Curonian Lagoon and its outflow in the Baltic Sea during the 2012–2013 period. Samples were also collected at the Nemunas River mouth in order to test the riverine impact. Obtained results showed that isotopic values of carbon and nitrogen ranged from −36.1‰ to −25.2‰ and from −0.9‰ to 15.5‰, respectively. The isotopic composition, together with the low C/N molar (∼7) and POC/Chl-a ratios (<100) of the POM, suggested the dominance of living phytoplankton in POM throughout the year with the higher input of detrital material (C/N >10, POC/Chl-a ratios >100) in late autumn − winter.The results of multivariate analysis evidenced a spatial distinction of POM distribution in the northern-transitional and central confined areas and allowed us to distinguish the main driving factors. The seasonal variation of the δ13C and δ15N values in POM (towards higher δ13C and lower δ15N values in the summer − early autumn period and lower δ13C and higher δ15N values in the late autumn − spring period) was determined by combination of factors such as availability of inorganic carbon and nitrogen, the riverine discharge, seasonal phytoplankton succession and by the short-term saline water intrusion to the northern-transitional part of the lagoon.

Oxygen utilization and downward carbon flux in an oxygen-depleted eddy in the eastern tropical North Atlantic

Abstract. The occurrence of mesoscale eddies that develop suboxic environments at shallow depth (about 40–100 m) has recently been reported for the eastern tropical North Atlantic (ETNA). Their hydrographic structure suggests that the water mass inside the eddy is well isolated from ambient waters supporting the development of severe near-surface oxygen deficits. So far, hydrographic and biogeochemical characterization of these eddies was limited to a few autonomous surveys, with the use of moorings, underwater gliders and profiling floats. In this study we present results from the first dedicated biogeochemical survey of one of these eddies conducted in March 2014 near the Cape Verde Ocean Observatory (CVOO). During the survey the eddy core showed oxygen concentrations as low as 5 µmol kg−1 with a pH of around 7.6 at approximately 100 m depth. Correspondingly, the aragonite saturation level dropped to 1 at the same depth, thereby creating unfavorable conditions for calcifying organisms. To our knowledge, such enhanced acidity within near-surface waters has never been reported before for the open Atlantic Ocean. Vertical distributions of particulate organic matter and dissolved organic matter (POM and DOM), generally showed elevated concentrations in the surface mixed layer (0–70 m), with DOM also accumulating beneath the oxygen minimum. With the use of reference data from the upwelling region where these eddies are formed, the oxygen utilization rate was calculated by determining oxygen consumption through the remineralization of organic matter. Inside the core, we found these rates were almost 1 order of magnitude higher (apparent oxygen utilization rate (aOUR); 0.26 µmol kg−1 day−1) than typical values for the open North Atlantic. Computed downward fluxes for particulate organic carbon (POC), were around 0.19 to 0.23 g C m−2 day−1 at 100 m depth, clearly exceeding fluxes typical for an oligotrophic open-ocean setting. The observations support the view that the oxygen-depleted eddies can be viewed as isolated, westwards propagating upwelling systems of their own, thereby represent re-occurring alien biogeochemical environments in the ETNA.

Could the conventionally known Abu Roash “G” reservoir (upper Cenomanian) be a promising active hydrocarbon source in the extreme northwestern part of Egypt? Palynofacies, palaeoenvironmental, and organic geochemical answers

In different areas of the Western Desert of Egypt, the Abu Roash “G” Member exhibits either a reservoir or source affinity. Thus, thirteen cutting samples covering the Abu Roash “G” Member were selected from the Nest-1A well at Matruh Basin to investigate its hydrocarbon source potential. Palynological age dating of the section that is calibrated with foraminifera and ostracodes enabled a proper identification of the “G” Member. Detailed analysis of the vertical distribution of particulate organic matter of this member shows two palynofacies types. PF-1 reflects an outer middle shelf depositional environment of prevailed reducing (suboxic-anoxic) conditions for the organic-rich shales of the lower “G” Member (samples 1–8). While, PF-2 reflects a minor regression that resulted in deposition of another organic-rich shales of the upper “G” Member (samples 9–13) in an inner middle shelf setting under the same prevailing reducing (suboxic-anoxic) conditions.Organic geochemical analysis reveals good to very good potential of the “G” Member as a hydrocarbon source rock (1.8–2.41, avg. 2.15 total organic content wt %). It also shows good to very good petroleum potential (PP: 4.8–11 , avg. 8 mg HC/g rock). Pyrolsis and palynofacies analyses show kerogen type II for the lower “G” Member (samples 1–8), which is characterized by high Hydrogen index (HI: 396 and 329 mg HC/g TOC at depths 1500 and 1560 m) and very high dominance of oil-prone material (amorphous organic matter “AOM”, marine palynomorphs, and sporomorphs) and very rare occurrence of gas-prone material (brown phytoclasts). The upper “G” Member (samples 9–13) shows kerogen type II-III, which is characterized by a lower HI value of 213 mg HC/g TOC at depth 1340 m and it contains fewer amounts of gas-prone material and relatively lower AOM and marine palynomorphs in comparison to the upper “G” Member. Maturation parameters Tmax (430–433 °C), production index (PI: 0.1 mg HC/g rock), and thermal alteration index (TAI: 2+) indicate the lower “G” Member has already entered the early oil-window kitchen, and it is expected to produce oil. The upper “G” Member is expected to produce only oil with no gas shows, because it is marginally mature (Tmax 426 °C, PI 0.2, TAI 2). The source potential index (SPI: 5.3 t HC/m2) of the “G” Member shows it as currently generating moderate quantities of oil in the area of Nest-1A well.Consequently, the organic-rich shales of the “G” Member are suggested here as a promising, active oil source rock in that extreme northwestern part of the Western Desert of Egypt. However, for commercial oil recovery from the Abu Roash “G” Member, it is highly recommended to explore the depocentre of Matruh Basin at about 150 km east the Nest-1A well.
