Distribution of HPV types among women with HPV-related diseases and exploration of lineages and variants of HPV 52 and 58 among HPV-infected patients in China: A systematic literature review

ABSTRACT To summarize the distribution of types of human papillomavirus (HPV) associated with HPV-related diseases and investigate the potential causes of high prevalence of HPV 52 and 58 by summarizing the prevalence of lineages, sub-lineages, and mutations among Chinese women. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, CNKI, and WanFang from January, 2012 to June, 2023 to identify all the eligible studies. We excluded patients who had received HPV vaccinations. Data were summarized in tables and cloud/rain maps. A total of 102 studies reporting HPV distribution and 15 studies reporting HPV52/HPV58 variants were extracted. Among Chinese women, the top five prevalent HPV types associated with cervical cancer (CC) were HPV16, 18, 58, 52, and 33. In patients with vaginal cancers and precancerous lesions, the most common HPV types were 16 and 52 followed by 58. For women with condyloma acuminatum (CA), the most common HPV types were 11 and 6. In Chinese women with HPV infection, lineage B was the most prominently identified for HPV52, and lineage A was the most common for HPV58. In addition to HPV types 16, which is prevalent worldwide, our findings revealed the unique high prevalence of HPV 52/58 among Chinese women with HPV-related diseases. HPV 52 variants were predominantly biased toward lineage B and sub-lineage B2, and HPV 58 variants were strongly biased toward lineage A and sub-lineage A1. Further investigations on the association between the high prevalent lineage and sub-lineage in HPV 52/58 and the risk of cancer risk are needed. Our findings underscore the importance of vaccination with the nine-valent HPV vaccine in China.

Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV Type Distribution in Penile Samples in Young Men in Denmark: Results 10 Years After Implementation of a Girls-Only HPV Vaccination Program.

In Denmark, a girls-only human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program was initiated in 2008-2009. The study aim was to assess the HPV prevalence and type distribution in younger men prior to HPV vaccination in men. The study population was younger men who attended information days regarding military service. At random days (2019-2020), 280 men were included. We collected questionnaire data regarding risk factors for HPV infection and a penile swab for HPV testing. We compared results in this study with those from a previous study of young men (2006-2007). The majority of participants (94%) were 18-20 years old. The median number of lifetime sexual partners was 4. Altogether, 130 men (46.4%) were HPV positive. No infections with HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 45 were detected. The most frequent type was HPV-51 (detected in 11.1%). Comparison showed that the odds of high-risk HPV type infection were higher in 2019-2020 (prevalence odds ratio [POR], 1.7 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.1-2.7]) compared with 2006-2007. In contrast, the odds were lower (POR, 0.3 [95% CI, .1-.6]) for HPV types targeted by the 9-valent HPV vaccine. The multicohort girls-only vaccination program has to a large degree protected young men against the HPV types included in the licensed vaccines. This does not speak against gender-neutral vaccination as the HPV prevalence is still high, although consisting largely of less carcinogenic HPV types.

Research and future directions of HPV-related vaccines

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a major cause of cervical lesions such as cervical cancer in women. Prophylactic vaccines developed against HPV have been widely used, but these vaccines are only effective against certain types of HPV and do not work in people who are already infected. Therefore, the development of therapeutic vaccines is also particularly important. The use of the modified poxvirus (MVA) as a vector for HPV vaccinations has garnered attention in recent years. It has been found that modified poxvirus vaccines are able to combat human papillomavirus infection and have significant safety and efficacy profiles. Based on the study of the distribution of HPV types in different regions and populations, this paper finds that there are differences in the prevalence of high-risk HPV subtypes in different regions, and that a large number of infected people need more effective treatments. At the same time, by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of preventive and therapeutic vaccines, we recognize that both have roles that cannot be replaced by the other in the task of fighting HPV, and that the two vaccines need to be developed together and complement each other in order to minimize the harm of HPV. Based on these findings, this paper provides a constructive reference for future targeted prevention and treatment of HPV in different regions of the world with different HPV distributions.

Prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus infection and genotype distribution among Kazakhstani women with abnormal cervical cytology

Aim This study aimed to identify the prevalence and distribution of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) types among Kazakhstani women with abnormal cervical cytology. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed from May 2019 to June 2020. Cervical samples were collected from women in the different regions of Kazakhstan. Results A total of 316 patients’ samples were analysed for HR-HPV using real-time multiplex PCR. Cervical cytology abnormalities were reported according to the Bethesda classification. HPV detection by cytology showed a statistically significant association with HPV status and the number of HPV infection types (p < .05). Among women with abnormal cervical cytology, 62.4% were positive for HPV infection of those 79.4% had low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), and 20.6% had high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). Among patients with LSIL, 77.4% had HPV16 and 58.8% were infected with HPV18. Among patients with HSIL, 41.2% had HPV18 and 22.6% – HPV16. Conclusions There is a high prevalence of HR-HPV types among Kazakhstani women with abnormal cervical cytology. The most identified types were HPV16, 18, 31, 33 and 52. There is an emergency need to implement an HPV vaccination program to prevent cervical lesion development.

Cost-effectiveness of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Burkina Faso: a modelling study

BackgroundAfrica has some of the highest cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates globally. Burkina Faso launched a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme for 9-year-old girls in 2022 with support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi). An economic evaluation of HPV vaccination is required to help sustain investment and inform decisions about optimal HPV vaccine choices.MethodsWe used a proportionate outcomes static cohort model to evaluate the potential impact and cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination for 9-year-old girls over a ten-year period (2022–2031) in Burkina Faso. The primary outcome measure was the cost (2022 US$) per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) averted from a limited societal perspective (including all vaccine costs borne by the government and Gavi, radiation therapy costs borne by the government, and all other direct medical costs borne by patients and their families). We evaluated four vaccines (CERVARIX®, CECOLIN®, GARDASIL-4®, GARDASIL-9®), comparing each to no vaccination (and no change in existing cervical cancer screening and treatment strategies) and to each other. We combined local estimates of HPV type distribution, healthcare costs, vaccine coverage and costs with GLOBOCAN 2020 disease burden data and clinical trial efficacy data. We ran deterministic and probabilistic uncertainty analyses.ResultsHPV vaccination could prevent 37–72% of cervical cancer cases and deaths. CECOLIN® had the most favourable cost-effectiveness (cost per DALY averted < 0.27 times the national gross domestic product [GDP] per capita). When cross-protection was included, CECOLIN® remained the most cost-effective (cost per DALY averted < 0.20 times the national GDP per capita), but CERVARIX® provided greater health benefits (66% vs. 48% reduction in cervical cancer cases and deaths) with similar cost-effectiveness (cost per DALY averted < 0.28 times the national GDP per capita, with CECOLIN® as the comparator). We estimated the annual cost of the vaccination programme at US$ 2.9, 4.1, 4.4 and 19.8 million for CECOLIN®, GARDASIL-4®, CERVARIX® and GARDASIL-9®, respectively. A single dose strategy reduced costs and improved cost-effectiveness by more than half.ConclusionHPV vaccination is cost-effective in Burkina Faso from a limited societal perspective. A single dose strategy and/or alternative Gavi-supported HPV vaccines could further improve cost-effectiveness.

Human papillomavirus vaccination and anal high-grade precancerous lesions and cancer-a real-world effectiveness study.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination has shown high efficacy against anal HPV infection and lesions in clinical trials, and the HPV prevalence and type distribution in anal precancers and cancer predict a high preventable potential for HPV vaccination. However, the real-world effectiveness of HPV vaccination against anal high-grade lesions and cancer is yet to be shown. We investigated HPV vaccine effectiveness against anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) or worse in a nationwide cohort including all Danish women aged 17-32 years during October 2006 to December 2021 (n = 968 881). HPV vaccinations and first occurrence of anal HSIL or worse were retrieved from nationwide registries. Women were considered vaccinated after first dose and classified by age at vaccination. Using Cox regression, hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for anal HSIL or worse according to vaccination status. During follow-up, the number of incident histological anal HSIL or worse cases was 37 in unvaccinated women, and less than 5 and 26 in women vaccinated at ages younger than 17 years and 17-32 years, respectively. The overall number of cancers was less than 5. Compared with unvaccinated women, the risk of histological anal HSIL or worse was reduced for women vaccinated at age younger than 17 years (HR = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.10 to 0.87). For women vaccinated at age 17-32 years, the hazard rate of anal HSIL or worse was 1.21 (95% CI = 0.73 to 2.03). This is the first study to demonstrate that HPV vaccination at a younger age is associated with substantially reduced risk of anal HSIL or worse in the general population.

Distribution of Human Papillomavirus Genotypes among the Women of South Andaman Island, India.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) causes various types of cancer in both men and women. Woman with HPV infection has a risk of developing invasive cervical cancer. Globally, HPV 16 and 18 were predominant. This study aims to find the distribution of various HPV types in South Andaman. A cross-sectional study was conducted among women in South Andaman, where cervical scrapes were collected after collecting written informed consent. Detection of HPV genotypes was carried out by using a PCR assay. Further, sequencing analysis was performed using MEGA11 to identify various genotypes in this territory. Of these 1000 samples, 32 were positive for HR-HPV 16, and four were positive for HR-HPV 18. Fifteen HPV genotypes were detected using molecular evolutionary analysis. Six cases were identified with multiple genotypes. The most prevalent genotype is HPV 16 which belongs to Lineage-A and sub-lineage A2. HPV 18 identified in South Andaman belonged to the lineage A1 to A5. Various HPV types were identified among women in South Andaman. Global burden of cervical cancer associated with various HPV sub-lineages. HPV-16 A1 sub-lineage was globally widespread, whereas sub-lineages A1, A2 and D1 prevailed in South Andaman. HR-HPV identified in this study enlightens the importance of HPV vaccination among women in remote places. These findings will help to strengthen public health awareness programs and prevention strategies for women in remote areas.

Type distribution of human papillomaviruses in ThinPrep cytology samples and HPV16/18 E6 gene variations in FFPE cervical cancer specimens in Fars province, Iran

BackgroundThere exists strong evidence that human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with cervical cancer (CC). HPV E6 is a major oncogene whose sequence variations may be associated with the development of CC. There is not sufficient data on the distribution of HPV types in ThinPrep cytology specimens and HPV 16/18 E6 gene variations among CC patients in the southwest of Iran. This study was conducted to contribute to HPV screening and vaccination in Iran.MethodsA total of 648 women screened for cervicitis, intraepithelial neoplasia or CC were included in the study. All participants underwent ThinPrep cytology testing, single-step HPV DNA detection and allele-specific reverse hybridization assays. Moreover, a total of 96 specimens previously tested positive for single infection with HPV16 or 18 were included for variant analysis. HPV16/18 lineages and sublineages were determined by PCR assays followed by sequencing the E6 gene and the construction of neighbor-joining phylogenetic trees.ResultsOverall, HPV DNA was detected in 62.19% of all the screened subjects. The detection rates of HPV DNA among individuals with normal, ASC-US, ASC-H, LSIL, and HSIL cervical cytology were 48.9%, 93.6%, 100%, 100%, and 100%, respectively. Low-risk HPVs were detected more frequently (46.9%) than high-risk (38.9%) and possible high-risk types (11.1%). Of 403 HPV-positive subjects, 172 (42.7%) had single HPV infections while the remaining 231 (57.3%) were infected with multiple types of HPV. Our results indicated a remarkable growth of high-risk HPV66 and 68 and low-risk HPV81 which have rarely been reported in Iran and HPV90 and 87 that are reported for the first time in the country. In addition, 3 lineages (A, D, and C) and 6 sublineages (A1, A2, A4, C1, D1, and D2) of HPV16, and one lineage and 4 sublineages (A1, A3, A4, and A5) of HPV18 were identified. The studied HPV16 and 18 variants mainly belonged to the D1 and A4 sublineages, respectively.ConclusionThe present study suggests that the prevalence of HPV infection in women of all age groups with or without premalignant lesions in the southwestern Iran is high and the predominant HPV types in the southwest of Iran may differ from those detected in other parts of the country. This study also highlights the necessity of not only initiating HPV vaccination for the general population but also developing new vaccines that confer immunity against the prevalent HPV types in the area and national cervical screening programs using a combination of thinPrep cytology test and HPV detection assays in order to improve the accuracy of the screening.

Distribution of human papillomavirus prevalence, genotype, and PAP test results in women in the southeast of Turkey.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, genotype, and distribution of cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) in women living in southeast Turkey. A total of 13,300 cervical smear materials were scanned and 899 cases found to be HPV-positive were included in the study. Cases were divided into seven groups according to age (under 19 years of age, 20-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and over 60 years old) and six groups according to HPV types (HPV type 16, HPV type 18, HPV type 16-18 association, HPV type 16-high risk (HR) association, HPV Type 18-HR association, and HPV HR [31,33,35,39,45, 51,52,56,58,59,66, and 68]). SurePath liquid-based cytology preparations were evaluated, and HPV tests were performed using real-time-polymerase chain reaction. A total of 6.7% of cervical smear samples were positive for HPV DNA. The mean age of these cases was 41 years (range 15-78 years). All HPV types showed the highest rate of positivity in the 30-39 age groups. Regarding the distribution of HPV types, most of the cases were in the HPV HR group (66%). The most common atypia category detected in cytological examination was "Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance" (ASC-US) (27%). It was determined that the prevalence of HPV in the southeast of Turkey is lower than the world average, the most common HPV type in our region is HPV-HR, and HPV peaks at older ages compared to what has been reported for other regions of the world.

Human papillomavirus prevalence and type distribution in Chinese juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis patients

Objective: To evaluate HPV prevalence and type distribution in Chinese juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (JoRRP) patients. Methods: We searched China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang data, China Biology Medicine disc, PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies assessing HPV infection of Chinese JoRRP patients up to 1 October, 2022. Two authors independently performed literature selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. HPV prevalence and HPV type-specific prevalence were pooled using a random effects model after Freeman-Tukey double arcsine transformation. All analyses were performed with R 4.1.3 software. Results: Nineteen publications investigating HPV infection of JoRRP patients were included in the final analyses. Of these, 16 studies reported HPV prevalence with a sample size of 1 528 patients, and 11 studies reported HPV6 prevalence and HPV11 prevalence with a sample size of 611 patients. All studies were graded as medium quality. In Chinese JoRRP patients, the synthesized HPV prevalence was 92.0% (95%CI:86.0%-96.6%, I2=87%), HPV6 prevalence was 42.4% (95%CI:34.9%-50.1%, I2=61%), and HPV11 prevalence was 72.3% (95%CI:59.0%-83.9%, I2=87%). All the pooled prevalence persisted in subgroup analyses stratified by publication year, sample size, and specimen type (P>0.05). There was no evidence of publication bias. In Chinese JoRRP patients, HPV16, 18, 31, 33, 52, and 58 prevalence was very low. Conclusions: Our findings suggested high HPV prevalence in Chinese JoRRP patients, and the most common HPV types were HPV6 and HPV11.

Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) among Females in the General Population of the Split and Dalmatia County and Its Association with Genital Microbiota and Infections: A Prospective Study.

We conducted a prospective study with the aim of determining HPV prevalence and type distribution in the general female population of Southern Croatia (SDC), and to detect the presence of other microorganisms in the lower part of the female reproductive system and their possible influence on the frequency of HPV infection. Data were collected during routine check-up exams. All participants were examined by a gynecologist, and cervico-vaginal scrapings/swabs were collected, for cytological (Pap smear) and microbiological (for bacterial growth, genital mycoplasmas, chlamydia, and HPV) analysis. Informed consent was obtained from all participants with accompanying questionnaire. A total of 1050 asymptomatic women living in SDC participated in the study during a one-year period, and 107 of them (10.2%) had HR-HPV infection. We found that the presence of some bacteria (Ureaplasma, Chlamydia, and Gardnerella) in the lower part of the female genital system has a positive correlation with the frequency of HPV infection and, consequently, a possible influence on faster progression to cervical dysplasia caused by HPV. We consider that inclusion of screening for sexually transmitted infections as monitoring in women with HPV infection could help to find women at risk of cervical cancer progression.

Anal human papillomavirus genotype distribution and its associations with abnormal anal cytology among men who have sex with men

BACKGROUND Anal human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with the severity of anal cytologic abnormalities that are precancerous lesions. Knowledge of HPV type distribution in populations at risk for anal cancer is needed. This study investigated anal HPV infections and cytological abnormalities among men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 90 men aged &gt;30 years with a history of anal sexual intercourse with men. Demographic characteristics and sexual behaviors were collected by using a self-completed questionnaire. Anal cytological results were examined, and HPV genotyping was performed by the Linear Array HPV genotyping test. Descriptive analyses of subject characteristics, prevalence, and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were performed. A chi-square test was used to determine their associations with high-risk HPV infection and cytological abnormalities. RESULTS The overall prevalence of abnormal cytology was 32% (24/75), atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) 17.33 % (13/75), 14.66% (11/75) were classified as low-grade SIL (LSIL) and no participant had high-grade SIL (HSIL). Prevalence of HPV infection with normal cytology was 86.27% (44/51), ASCUS 92.30% (12/13), and LSIL 100% (11/11). The most common types of anal HPV in participants with cytological abnormalities are HPV 16, HPV 18 for high-risk HPV, and HPV 11, HPV 6 for low-risk HPV. There were no associations between the predictor variables and the abnormal cytology (p&gt;0.05). CONCLUSION There was a high prevalence of HPV infection in MSM with abnormal anal cytology. A routine anal Pap smear program and vaccination are needed to prevent HPV infection and anal dysplasia in MSM.

Assesment Of Hpv Dna Positive İndividuals İn Sivas Province İn Terms Of Some Variables

Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women and causes death. Revealing the distribution of HPV prevalence and types in cervical cancer remains important for both treatment and vaccination strategies. The goal of this study is to determine the HPV DNA subtypes of women who are positive for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) screening, and to evaluate their sociodemographic characteristics and cervical smear results. &#x0D; Methods: The study was conducted on 215 women who were directed to Sivas Cumhuriyet University Obstetry and Gynocology outpatient clinic by her gynocologists or family physicians between 2015-2018 years. A questionnary containing datas of patients about age, education levels and jobs of both spouses, smoking status, obstetric history and age of first sexual intercourse was filled out by the researcher. The data were analysed with SPSS (vers 23.0) program and significance level was taken as 0.05.&#x0D; Results: The most prevalent HPV types were type 16 and category of the others; with the rates of respectively 47% (n: 101), 40% (n: 86). The frequencies of ASCUS (undetermined atypical squamous epithelial cells), LGSIL (low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) and HGSIL (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) were respectively found to be 7.9% (n: 17), 23.7% (n: 51) and 1.9% (n: 4). The relationship between HPV types and Pap Smear results was statistically significant (p: 0.011). There was no difference between patients and their spouses about education levels and occupations; and among patients on smoking status, menstrual patterns, age at first sexual intercourse and family planning methods and HPV types (p&gt; 0.05). In women above aged 55, only two types of HPV DNA were observed; which were type 16 and category of the others (p: 0.005). The relationship between abortion history and HPV types was found out to be significant (p: 0.016). &#x0D; Conclusion: This study has contributed to the literature by revealing the types of HPV which observed in Sivas province over a period of 3 years.

Are bladder washing samples suitable for investigation of HPV infection in urinary bladder? Comparison in HPV prevalence between urine and washing samples.

Although urine and bladder washing samples are commonly used for the cytological evaluation of the bladder mucosa, it has been unknown whether these samples are likely suitable to investigate human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence in the urinary bladder. The present study aimed to elucidate the appropriateness of spontaneously voided urine or bladder washing in screening HPV infection in the urinary bladder.Urine and bladder washing samples were obtained from 201 patients who underwent transurethral bladder tumor resection. After extracting DNA from both samples, HPV-DNA was examined using a nested polymerase chain reaction with GP5+/6+ and MY09/11 primers. HPV genotyping was performed in the HPV-positive samples. In situ hybridization (ISH) was performed to observe the HPV-DNA localization in urothelial cells among cytological samples and paraffin-embedded tumor tissues in HPV-positive washing samples.HPV prevalence in urine and washing samples were 9.5% and 7.0%, respectively. High-risk HPV prevalence in urine and washing samples was 7.5% and 4.0%, respectively. The most common HPV type was HPV 16, followed by HPV 52 and HPV 18 in both samples. HPV type distribution in both samples was not in agreement (κ = -0.431). The ISH analysis revealed that HPV-DNA signal was observed in urothelial cells of five (55.7%) of nine detectable HPV-positive cytological samples. Six (66.7%) of nineHPV-positive cases had HPV-DNA signals in tumor tissue.The use of washing samples was likely applicable for investigating HPV prevalence in the urinary bladder. HPV-DNA detected in washing samples might be frequently derived from the urinary bladder.

Prevalence and distribution of selected cervical human papillomavirus types in HIV infected and HIV uninfected women in South Africa, 1989-2021: A narrative review.

BackgroundHuman papillomavirus infection, a causative agent of cervical cancer, is of great concern, more so in populations with high HIV prevalence, such as South Africa.AimThis review aimed to examine the prevalence and distribution of selected cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) types in HIV infected and HIV uninfected women in South Africa.MethodsPubMed and Web of Science databases were searched using key words. For data integrity, data was assessed by two authors independently. The study inclusion criteria comprised records on cervical HPV, HPV genotyping and HPV type distribution among South African women. Statistical analysis was performed using Social Science Statistics.ResultsSixty-nine articles met the inclusion criteria for analysis. Data on cervical HPV prevalence and type distribution was available only for five of the nine provinces of South Africa. Only 4/69 studies used sequencing as an approach to identify HPV types. In a general population, HPV type 16 was the most frequent (8.80%), followed by types 35 (4.86%), 18 (4.14%), 58 and 52 with the frequency of 3.65% and 3.62%, respectively. Furthermore, the least frequent type was HPV 70 (0.74%). Both HIV infected and HIV uninfected populations had a higher prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) types 16, 18 and 35 than other HPV types; while HPV types 6, 11 and 70 were the least frequent types from these populations. Lastly, HPV 16 was the most predominant type among women with normal (2.03%) and abnormal cervical cytology (6.60%).ConclusionExpanding on HPV genotyping will improve the knowledge in patterns of HPV type distribution in South Africa that will further help in decision making to improve current diagnostics, and future vaccine development and assessment.

Seroprevalence of mucosal and cutaneous human papillomavirus (HPV) types among children and adolescents in the general population in Germany

BackgroundIn Germany, HPV vaccination of adolescent girls was introduced in 2007. Nationally representative data on the distribution of vaccine-relevant HPV types in the pre-vaccination era are, however, only available for the adult population. To obtain data in children and adolescents, we assessed the prevalence and determinants of serological response to 16 different HPV types in a representative sample of 12,257 boys and girls aged 1–17 years living in Germany in 2003–2005.MethodsSerum samples were tested for antibodies to nine mucosal and seven cutaneous HPV types. The samples had been collected during the nationally representative German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents in 2003–2006. We calculated age- and gender-specific HPV seroprevalence. We used multivariable regression models to identify associations between demographic and behavioral characteristics and HPV seropositivity.ResultsWe found low but non-zero seroprevalence for the majority of tested HPV types among children and adolescents in Germany. The overall seroprevalence of HPV-16 was 2.6%, with slightly higher values in adolescents. Seroprevalence of all mucosal types but HPV-6 ranged from 0.6% for HPV-33, to 6.4% for HPV-31 and did not differ by gender. We found high overall seroprevalence for HPV-6 with 24.8%. Cutaneous HPV type seroprevalence ranged from 4.0% for HPV-38 to 31.7% for HPV-1. In the majority of cutaneous types, seroprevalence did not differ between boys and girls, but increased sharply with age, (e.g., HPV-1 from 1.5% in 1–3-years-old to 45.1% in 10–11-years-old). Associations between behavioral factors and type-specific HPV prevalence were determined to be heterogeneous.ConclusionsWe report the first nationally representative data of naturally acquired HPV antibody reactivity in the pre-HPV-vaccination era among children and adolescents living in Germany. These data can be used as baseline estimates for evaluating the impact of the current HPV vaccination strategy targeting 9–14-years-old boys and girls.

Prevalence and Distribution of Human Papillomavirus Genotypes (1997-2019) and Their Association With Cervical Cancer and Precursor Lesions in Women From Southern Mexico.

BackgroundCervical cancer (CC) is the fourth most common malignancy of the female genital tract. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of precancerous lesions and CC cases worldwideObjectiveWe assessed the prevalence and distribution of HPV types and their association with precancerous lesions and CC.MethodsHPV genotypes were detected by 3 methods depending on the year of in which the sample was analyzed: MY09/11 RFLPs (1997 to 2010), GP5+/6+ primer systems (2005 to 2010) and INNO-LiPA HPV Genotyping Extra (2010 to 2019) in cervical samples (No-IL: 4445; LSIL: 2464; HSILs: 151 and CC: 253) from women from southern Mexico.ResultsThe overall HPV prevalence was 54.17%, and hpv-16 was the most common genotype. In single infection, the high-risk HPV genotypes (group 1) were associated with squamous intraepitelial lesions (LSIL: HPV–39 (OR = 10.58, 95% CI 4.09–27.36, P < .001); HSIL: HPV-31 (OR = 14.76, 95% CI 6.56–33.20, P < .001); and CC: HPV-16 (OR = 25.01, 95% CI 18.83–33.21, P < .001). In multiple infections, the HPV genotypes (HPV-16 and HPV-18) were also associated with a high risk of lesions [LSIL: HPV-18 (OR = 3.45; 95% CI 1.36–8.91; P = .009); HSIL: HPV-18 (OR = 5.12; 95% CI 1.21–21.68; P = .026); and CC: HPV-16 (OR = 3.03; 95% CI 1.72–5.32; P < .001)] compared to single infection. In the analysis adjusted for age, giving birth, and cigarette smoking, a significant increase in the risk of LSIL, HSIL, and CC was maintained.ConclusionsThis study provides current data on the prevalence and distribution of HPV genotypes in women from southern Mexico, which could serve as a valuable reference to guide nationwide CC screening programs and provide scientific evidence that could be useful for vaccine development efforts. Likewise, it was identified that infection with carcinogenic HPV genotypes is an independent risk factor for LSIL, HSIL, and CC.

Prevalence, Types, and Factors of HPV Infection Among Women With Abnormal Cervical Cytology Screening at Ramathibodi Hospital

Background: Cervical cancer is the second leading cancer among Thai women. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of cervical cancer. HPV16 and HPV18 are the most prevalence types in women with cervical cancer.&#x0D; Objectives: To study the prevalence and types of HPV infection and its associated risk factors among women with abnormal cervical cytology screening.&#x0D; Methods: This cross-sectional study purposively recruited 376 women who had abnormal cervical cytology screening by liquid-based cytology at the outpatient clinic, Ramathibodi Hospital from August 2015 until March 2016. HPV genotyping was done by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Analysis of the personal characteristics was done using descriptive statistics.&#x0D; Results: The prevalence of HPV infection was 41.5%. Among them, a single infection was found in 78.8% of women. The most common genotypes were HPV16 (8.5%) and HPV52 (7.7%). But HPV18 was found in only 1.9%. The characteristic which was significantly associated with HPV infection was age, nulliparity, and high-graded dysplasia (P &lt; .05).&#x0D; Conclusions: High prevalence rate of HPV infection was found among women with abnormal cytology. High-risk HPV prevalence and type distribution may be useful for public health authorities in assessing the cervical screening program.&#x0D;

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Prevalence and Type Distribution in Urban Areas of Malaysia.

Background:Cervical cancer is the third leading cause of death in Malaysia, and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the principal aetiology that is responsible for its development. This study was aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of HPV types among different age groups, ethnicity, and areas in Malaysia. Materials and Methods:A total of 764 women aged 20-74 years old within the cities of Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu underwent both cervical cytological assessment and HPV DNA analysis. Cervical cytology glass slides were prepared using the liquid base technique (Path TEZT TM). HPV DNA was extracted using TANBead® Nucleic Acid Extraction Kit (Taiwan Advanced Nonotech Inc.), then the types were further identified using a DR.HPV Genotyping IVD kit. Results:The prevalence of HPV infection was 14.0% (107/764) with high-risk type at 10.7% (82/764) and low-risk type at 3.27% (25/764). The most common high-risk HPV types were HPV-52, 66, 33, 39, and 58 whereas low-risk HPV types were HPV-6, 40, and 81. The majority of HPV infections (80.37%) were detected in women with normal cytology results. The most prevalent HPV type among Chinese is 33 (n=6) followed by 16, 44, 58, 66 and 68 (n=5). Among Malays, HPV 16 and 51 were the two most prevalent types (n=2). The sensitivity of the HPV DNA test compared to cytology was 100% with a specificity of 88.37%.Conclusion:This study revealed that the most common high-risk HPV type among women living in urban areas in Malaysia is HPV 52, unfortunately which is not the type of infection the current HPV vaccine is covered for protection among females. These findings may contribute beneficial information to health care providers for the appropriate use of HPV vaccine in the prevention of cervical cancer in Malaysia.
