Sections I and II were newly written by Mizoguchi and Kim in 1976 while Section III is derived from a previous report presented for the Council for Asian Manpower Studies—“Income and Assets Distribution in Japan and South Korea” by the three of us. This paper was read at the Joint Conference on the Income Distribution of Korea in 1976 in Seoul sponsored by the Institute of Economic Research, Seoul National University. We revised the original draft using the valuable advice of Professor Ho Tak Kim of Seoul National University who pointed out the extraordinary value in Gini coefficients for the other households and some discrepancies in the consumption function in Section II. We would like to express our gratitude for the many stimulating comments from participants in the conference and the editors of this journal.
