Irrigation system and land use effect on surface water quality in river, at lake Dianchi, Yunnan, China

The surface water samples were collected in river Dahe and its tributaries, which flow into severely eutrophic lake Dianchi, Yunnan Province, China, in order to elucidate factors controlling water quality fluctuations. The temporal and spatial distribution of water quality tendency was observed. The water quality of each river is dependent on the hydrology effect such water gate and circulating irrigation system. We must consider the hydrology effect to accurately understand water quality variations of river in this study field. In river without highly circulating irrigation system or water gate effect, the downstream nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) concentration increase occurred in area dominated by open field cultivation, whereas the NO3-N concentration was constant or decreased in area dominated by greenhouse land use. This result suggests that greenhouse covers the soil from precipitation, and nitrate load of greenhouse could be less than that of open field cultivation while the rainfall event. In the upper reaches of river, where is dominated by open field cultivation, there were no sharp increase dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus and total phosphorus concentration, but P load was accumulated in the lower reaches of river, whose predominant land use is greenhouse. Although the P sources is unclear in this study, greenhouse area may have potential of P loads due to its high P content in greenhouse soil. Considering hydrology effect is necessary to determine what the major factor is influencing the water quality variation, especially in area with highly complicated irrigation system in this studying site.

Long-term stream chemistry trends in the southern Georgia Little River Experimental Watershed

Long-term stream water quality data may provide opportunities to study the effectiveness of conservation practices. The first three decades of data for the Little River in southwestern Georgia were analyzed for trends as part of the Conservation Effects Assessment Project. Concentrations and loads for chloride, ammonium-N, nitrate plus nitrite-N, total Kjeldahl N, total P, and dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus were determined from 1974 through 2003 for eight nested subwatersheds in the Little River Experimental Watershed. There was a statistically significant downward trend for annual mean total phosphorus concentration in five subwatersheds and an upward trend for chloride in three subwatersheds. The decrease in total phosphorus concentration occurred primarily in winter. Trends in phosphorus and chloride concentrations did not appear to be related to land use. There were no statistical differences in annual streamflow or nutrient loads expressed on a per area basis among the nested subwatersheds. Annual and seasonal flow-weighted mean concentrations were different among the subwatersheds for nitrate-N and chloride. The larger subwatersheds had significantly higher nitrate-N in winter and spring. The nutrient loads and concentrations from these subwatersheds were an order of magnitude less compared to other agricultural watersheds. Conservation practices were implemented on 11% of the watershed area from 1980 to 2003; however, the affects of the practices on watershed water quality was not clear. Earlier short-term studies attributed the low levels of nutrient transport to the presence of extensive riparian forests and the general prevalence of forest in these mixed land use watersheds.

Long‐term water chemistry database, Little River Experimental Watershed, southeast Coastal Plain, United States

A water quality sampling program was initiated in 1974 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service on the 334 km2 Little River Experimental Watershed (LREW) near Tifton in south Georgia to monitor the effects of changing land use and agricultural practices over time and to support development of simulation models capable of predicting future impacts of agricultural land use and management changes. Stream samples were taken on a weekly or more frequent basis and were analyzed for chloride, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite nitrogen, total kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, and dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus. Monitoring began in 1974 on the entire watershed and four nested subwatersheds, ranging in size from 16.7 to 114.9 km2, and continues until present. Partial records of 7, 10, and 19 years exist for three additional subwatersheds. Suspended solids data are available for all eight subwatersheds for 1974–1978 and 1979–1981, three subwatersheds for 1982–1986, and all eight subwatersheds again beginning in the year 2000. The concentration and associated load data are being published on the LREW database anonymous ftp site (ftp://www.tiftonars.org/).

Impact of Soil Amendments on Reducing Phosphorus Losses from Runoff in Sod

Received for publication December 22, 2004. Research was initiated to study the interaction between soil amendments (lime, gypsum, and ferrous sulfate) and dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus [RP(<0.45)] losses from manure applications from concentrated runoff flow through a sod surface. Four run-over boxes (2.2-m2 surface area) were prepared for each treatment with a bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] sod surface (using sod blocks) and composted dairy manure was surface-applied at rates of 0, 4.5, 9, or 13.5 Mg ha-1. The three soil amendments were then applied to the boxes. Two 30-min runoff events were conducted and runoff water was collected at 10-min intervals and analyzed for RP(<0.45). Results indicated that the addition of ferrous sulfate was very effective at reducing the level of RP(<0.45). in runoff water, reducing RP(<0.45) from 1.3 mg L(-1) for the highest compost rate with no amendment to 0.2 mg L(-1) for the ferrous sulfate in the first 10 min of runoff. Lime and gypsum showed a small impact on reducing RP(<0.45), with a reduction in the first 10 min to 0.9 and 0.8 mg L(-1), respectively. The ferrous sulfate reduced the RP(<0.45) in the tank at the end of the first runoff event by 66.3% compared with no amendment. In the second runoff event, the ferrous sulfate was very effective at reducing RP(<0.45) in runoff, with no significant differences in RP(<0.45) with application of 13.5 Mg ha(-1) compost compared with no manure application. The results indicate that the addition of ferrous sulfate may greatly reduce RP(<0.45) losses in runoff and has considerable potential to be used on pasture, turfgrass, and filter strips to reduce the initial RP(<0.45) losses from manure application to the environment.

Contribution of particulate phosphorus to runoff phosphorus bioavailability.

Runoff P associated with eroded soil is partly solubilized in receiving waters and contributes to eutrophication, but the significance of particulate phosphorus (PP) in the eutrophying P load is debatable. We assessed losses of bioavailable P fractions in field runoff from fine-textured soils (Cryaquepts). Surface runoff at four sites and drain-flow at two of them was sampled. In addition to dissolved molybdate-reactive phosphorus (DRP) losses, two estimates of bioavailable PP losses were made: (i) desorbable PP, assessed by anion exchange resin-extraction (AER-PP) and (ii) redox-sensitive PP, assessed by extraction with bicarbonate and dithionite (BD-PP). Annual losses of BD-PP and AER-PP were derived from the relationships (R2 = 0.77-0.96) between PP and these P forms. Losses of BD-PP in surface runoff (94-1340 g ha(-1)) were typically threefold to fivefold those of DRP (29-510 kg ha(-1)) or AER-PP (13-270 g ha(-1)). Where monitored, drainflow P losses were substantial, at one of the sites even far greater than those via the surface pathway. Typical runoff DRP concentration at the site with the highest Olsen-P status (69-82 mg kg(-1)) was about 10-fold that at the site with the lowest Olsen P (31-45 mg kg(-1)), whereas the difference in AER-PP per mass unit of sediment was only threefold, and that of BD-PP 2.5-fold. Bioavailable P losses were greatly influenced by PP runoff, especially so on soils with a moderate P status that produced runoff with a relatively low DRP concentration.

Phytase, high-available-phosphorus corn, and storage effects on phosphorus levels in pig excreta.

Phosphorus-based land application limits for manure have increased the importance of optimizing diet P management and accurately characterizing the bioavailability of manure P. We examined the effects of pig (Sus scrofa) diets formulated with high-available-P corn and phytase on P levels in excreta and slurry stored for 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 d. Twenty-four pigs (approximately 14 kg each) were fed one of four low-P diets: (i) normal corn, no phytase (control); (ii) normal corn with 600 phytase units kg(-1) (PHY); (iii) high-available-P corn, no phytase (HAP); and (iv) high-available-P corn with 600 phytase units kg(-1) (HAP + PHY). Fresh fecal and stored slurry dry matter (DM) was analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), dissolved molybdate-reactive phosphorus (DRP), dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), acid-soluble reactive phosphorus (ASRP), acid-soluble organic phosphorus (ASOP), and phytate phosphorus (PAP). The PHY, HAP, and HAP + PHY diets significantly (alpha = 0.05) decreased fecal TP 19, 17, and 40%, respectively, compared with the control. Dissolved reactive P was 36% lower in the HAP + PHY diet compared with the other diets. Relative fractions (percent of TP) of DRP, DOP, ASOP, and PAP in slurry generally decreased with storage time up to 150 d, with the largest decreases occurring within 60 to 90 d. Diet-induced differences in relative fractions of DRP, DOP, ASRP, and PAP were significant when averaged across storage times, simulating a mixed-age slurry. Relative fractions of DRP in simulated mixed-age slurries were higher in HAP and HAP + PHY diets, indicating that diet may affect P losses under certain P-based application scenarios.

Phosphorus in runoff assessed by anion exchange resin extraction and an algal assay.

Eutrophication of surface waters can be accelerated by agricultural inputs of phosphorus (P), provided that P is in a form that can be utilized by aquatic algae. We studied anion exchange resin (AER) extraction and a dual culture algal assay (DCAA) for the determination of potentially algal-available P in water samples without sediment preconcentration. Our material consisted of agricultural and forest runoff and wastewaters. The results obtained by the two methods were essentially equal when the samples contained only small amounts of particulate phosphorus (PP) in relation to dissolved molybdate-reactive phosphorus (DRP). However, in turbid agricultural runoff, P extracted with AER averaged 72% (n = 17) of the P yield of the 3-wk DCAA (R2 = 0.94). When the runoff samples were diluted for the AER extraction in the same manner as for the DCAA, the AER-P yield increased to 85% (n = 5) of DCAA-P. The minimum detectable value was greater for the AER test (41 microg L(-1) AER-extractable P) than for the DCAA (7 microg L(-1) DCAA-P). At concentrations greater than about 50 microg L(-1) AER-P or DCAA-P, the accuracy of the methods was satisfactory, with the coefficient of variation in replicated analyses being less than 10% for the AER test and less than 20% for the DCAA. Other anions competing for the exchange sites of the AER decreased P recovery by 15 to 20% when their equivalent concentration exceeded about 4 mmol, L(-1), and this effect was relatively constant over a large concentration range. We consider that AER extraction is a suitable low-cost method to estimate the algal availability of P in runoff samples.

Relationship of soil test phosphorus and sampling depth to runoff phosphorus in calcareous and noncalcareous soils.

A study was initiated to investigate the relationship between soil test P and depth of soil sampling with runoff losses of dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus (DMRP). Rainfall simulations were conducted on two noncalcareous soils, a Windthorst sandy loam (fine, mixed, thermic Udic Paleustalf) and a Blanket clay loam (fine, mixed, thermic Pachic Argiustoll), and two calcareous soils, a Purves clay (clayey, smectitic, thermic Lithic Calciustoll) and a Houston Black clay (fine, smectitic, thermic Udic Haplustert). Soil (0- to 2.5-, 0- to 5-, and 0- to 15-cm depths) and runoff samples were collected from each of the four soils in permanent pasture exhibiting a wide range in soil test P levels (as determined by Mehlich III and distilled water extraction) due to prior manure applications. Simulated rain was used to produce runoff, which was collected for 30 min. Good regression equations were derived relating soil test P level to runoff DMRP for all four soil types, as indicated by relatively high r2 values (0.715 to 0.961, 0- to 5-cm depth). Differences were observed for the depth of sampling, with the most consistent results observed with the 0- to 5-cm sampling depth. Runoff DMRP losses as a function of the concentration of P in soil were lower in calcareous soils (maximum of 0.74 mg L(-1)) compared with noncalcareous soils (maximum of 1.73 mg L(-1)). The results indicate that a soil test for environmental P could be developed, but it would require establishing different soil test P level criteria for different soils or classes of soils.

Particulate phosphorus and sediment in surface runoff and drainflow from clayey soils.

Recent work has shown that a significant portion of the total loss of phosphorus (P) from agricultural soils may occur via subsurface drainflow. The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of different P forms in surface and subsurface runoff, and to assess the potential algal availability of particulate phosphorus (PP) in runoff waters. The material consisted of 91 water-sample pairs (surface runoff vs. subsurface drainage waters) from two artificially drained clayey soils (a Typic Cryaquept and an Aeric Cryaquept) and was analyzed for total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved molybdate-reactive phosphorus (DRP), and anion exchange resin-extractable phosphorus (AER-P). On the basis of these determinations, we calculated the concentrations of PP, desorbable particulate phosphorus (PPi), and particulate unavailable (nondesorbable) phosphorus (PUP). Some water samples and the soils were also analyzed for 137Cs activity and particle-size distribution. The major P fraction in the waters studied was PP and, on average, only 7% of it was desorbable by AER. However, a mean of 47% of potentially bioavailable P (AER-P) consisted of PPi. The suspended soil material carried by drainflow contained as much PPi (47-79 mg kg-1) as did the surface runoff sediment (45-82 mg kg-1). The runoff sediments were enriched in clay-sized particles and 137Cs by a factor of about two relative to the surface soils. Our results show that desorbable PP derived from topsoil may be as important a contributor to potentially algal-available P as DRP in both surface and subsurface runoff from clayey soils.

Observations on the spatial and temporal variation in the phosphorus status of lakes in the British Isles

Abstract. An examination of total phosphorus (TP) concentrations from 902 lakes in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland (NI), suggest that only Scottish lakes have a high percentage (73%) of oligotrophic waters (TP&lt;10 μg PI‐1). The TP status of upland lakes in NI was greater than Scottish lakes particularly if lake catchments were afforested. Although lowland lakes in NI drain a predominately non‐urbanized landscape, 38% of lakes below 100 m had TP concentrations &gt; 100 μg PI‐1 and only 29% &lt;35 μg PI‐1. English lakes tended to have higher TP concentrations (70% &gt; 101 μg PI‐1) which may reflect P inputs from sewage treatment works (STWs) although lakes draining agricultural catchments frequently produced high TP concentrations. Between 1985 and 1995, annual point source TP inputs to Loch Leven, Scotland, declined by 8 tonnes P or 40% of the 1985 TP loadings to the Loch. As point source inputs were proportionally richer in dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus (MRP) than diffuse inputs, the MRP loading was reduced by 46%. From 1974 to 1995, TP concentrations in Lough Neagh (NI) increased despite reduced TP inputs from STWs. Partitioning of annual TP loadings from two major inflowing rivers to Lough Neagh, showed river MRP loadings from non‐point sources had been increasing at annual rates of 1.9 and 2.3 kg P km‐2. The remaining non‐MRP river loadings had not been influenced by lower TP loads from STWs and showed no tendency to increase with time. Insufficient data is available from other lake systems in the British Isles to judge whether the increase in non‐point source MRP loadings observed in the Lough Neagh catchment has been repeated elsewhere.

STREAM PHOSPHORUS EXPORTS FROM WATERSHEDS WITH CONTRASTING LAND USES IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO1

ABSTRACT: The export of dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus (DMRP) from 22 watersheds in the Duffin Creek drainage basin near Toronto Ontario was measured over a 25‐month period. The annual average loss varied from 0.027 to 2.11 kg P/ha. Phosphorus levels in a number of watersheds were strongly influenced by effluent from a sewage treatment plant which contributed about 68 percent of the annual DMRP input to Duffin Creek. An analysis of 12 watersheds which did not contain major point pollution sources revealed that DMRP concentration and losses had a significant positive correlation with crop area and a strong negative association with forest, abandoned farm land, and area of sand + sandy loam soils. The causal relationships underlying these simple correlations are difficult to evaluate because of considerable multicollinearity between land use, soil, and topographic variables. Analysis of a mass balance for the downstream reaches of Duffin Creek indicated that there was considerable retention of phosphorus in the river channel particularly during summer low flows.

Sample intake position and loading rates from nonpoint source pollution

Paired water samples were simultaneously activated from two different vertical positions within the approach section of a flow-control structure to determine the effect of sample intake position on nonpoint runoff parameter concentrations and subsequent event loads. Suspended solids (SS), total phosphorus (TP) and organic plus exchangeable nitrogen [(Or+Ex)-N] were consistently higher throughout each runoff event when sampled from the floor of the approach section as opposed to those samples taken at midstage. Dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus (DMRP) and ammonium (NH4-N) concentrations did not appear to be significantly affected by the vertical difference in intake position. However, the nitrate plus nitrite nitrogen [(NO3+NO2)-N] concentrations were much higher when sampled from the midstage position. Although the concentration differences between the two methods were not appreciable, when evaluated in terms of event loads, discrepancies were evident for all parameters. Midstage sampling produced event loads for SS, TP, (Or + Ex)−N, DMRP, NH4-N, and (NO3+NO2)-N that were 44,39,35,80,71, and 181%, respectively, of floor sampling loads. Differences in loads between the two methods are attributed to the midstage position, sampling less of the bed load. The correct position will depend on the objective; however, such differences should be recognized during the design phase of the monitoring program.
