Activation of cement hydration accelerates hardening of concrete, enables faster production rates or production at similar frequency but significantly reduced CO2 emissions. The present study sheds light at the reason for accelerated cement hydration when power ultrasound (PUS) is applied during mixing. The investigations analysed the effect of PUS on dissolution of tricalcium silicate (C3S), homogeneous precipitation of C-S-H as well its effect on C3S-hydration. A combination of analytical techniques such as electric conductivity, optical emission spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, conduction reaction calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and specific surface analysis were applied. It was revealed that PUS has a significant effect on paste hydration, which is induced by heterogenous nucleation of C-S-H and CH immediately after sonication. These hydrates were formed and dispersed by sonication thus acting as in-situ formed crystal seeds which shorten the induction period of C3S hydration.
