Generation and Propagation of M2 Internal Tides Modulated by the Kuroshio Northeast of Taiwan

AbstractThe variability and energetics of M2 internal tides during their generation and propagation through the Kuroshio flows northeast of Taiwan are investigated using a high‐resolution numerical model. The corrugated continental slopes, particularly the I‐Lan Ridge and Mien‐Hua Canyon, are first identified as the energetic sources of M2 internal tides. The domain‐integrated M2 barotropic‐to‐baroclinic conversion rate under the Kuroshio influence is ~2.35 GW, ~0.9 GW of which is generated at the I‐Lan Ridge, ~0.93 GW at the Mien‐Hua Canyon, and ~0.52 GW at the north shelf. The M2 internal tide generation is influenced by the horizontally varying, zonally tilting stratification associated with the Kuroshio. In this situation, the conversion rate decreases by ~30% at the I‐Lan Ridge but increases to within ~10% at the Mien‐Hua Canyon and north shelf, in comparison to the simulation initiated with horizontal homogeneous stratification. Internal tides from multiple sources interfere to form a three‐dimensional baroclinic field. The interference by the internal tides from the Mien‐Hua Canyon and north shelf is refracted by the Kuroshio and exhibits a mesoscale gyre pattern, which can explain the frequent occurrence of internal solitary waves. An energetic along‐slope tidal beam (TBKC) from the I‐Lan Ridge radiates southward against the northward Kuroshio flows, causing strong vertical displacement, which favorably compares with recently reported field measurements. The M2 internal tide energy dissipates primarily near the source sites, and the remaining energy radiates outward over limited distances. Complex topographic features and background currents enhance the internal tide dissipation, which induces strong, inhomogeneous diapycnal mixing.

Seasonal and Spatial Variations of the M2 Internal Tide in the Yellow Sea

AbstractThe seasonality of internal tides is particularly conspicuous in shelf seas due to the dramatical variations in the marine environment. In this paper, the seasonal and spatial variabilities of M2 internal tides in the Yellow Sea (YS) are investigated using a high‐resolution numerical ocean model. The freshwater runoff of the Yangtze River is also considered. Because most nonlinear internal waves are of tidal origin, the simulated internal tides show good spatial consistency with the satellite‐detected nonlinear internal waves. During summer, the M2 internal tides are ubiquitous and originate from multiple generation sites (e.g., the west coast of the Korean Peninsula and the Yangtze River estuary). During other seasons, the spatial coverage of the internal tides becomes very limited. Multiple sources combined with seasonal onset and decay lead to complex seasonal interference patterns. The wavelengths vary both spatially and temporally, depending on the water depth and ocean stratification. Between spring and autumn, a seasonally reversed pattern of radiation of baroclinic energy flux is found in the southern YS, which may be induced by the seasonal variability of the YS Warm Current. Seasonal stratification controls the seasonality of the generation, propagation, and dissipation of internal tides and is maintained by the monsoon, seasonal circulation, and Yangtze River runoff. Our simulations suggest that, although internal tide dissipation is dispensable for the tidal energy budgets in the YS, internal tides seem to be the leading order contributor to the midcolumn diapycnal mixing, as they are more efficient mixers than barotropic tides.

Temperature variability caused by internal tides in the coastal waters of east coast of Peninsular Malaysia

The effects of tidal currents (i.e., barotropic and internal tides) are important in the biogeochemistry of a coastal shelf sea. The high-frequency of currents and near-bottom temperatures collected in three consecutive southwest monsoon seasons (May, June, July and August of 2013 until 2015) is presented to reveal the role of the tidal currents to the temperature variability in the coastal shelf sea of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia (ECPM), south of the South China Sea (SCS). The results of a spectral density and harmonic analysis demonstrate that the near-bottom temperature variability and the tidal currents are influenced by diurnal (O1 and K1) and semidiurnal (M2) tidal currents. The spectral density of residual currents (detided data) at 5, 10 and 16 m depth also shows significant peaks at the diurnal tidal frequency (K1) and small peaks at the semidiurnal tidal frequency (M2) indicating the existence of internal tides. The result of the horizontal kinetic energy (HKE) shows a strong intermittent energy of internal tides in the ECPM with the strongest energy is found at 16 m depth during a sporadic cooling event in June and July. A high horizontal cross-shore heat flux (16 m) also indicates strong intrusions of cooler water into the ECPM in June and July. During the short duration of cold pulse water observed in June and July, a cross-wavelet analysis also reveals the strong relationship between the near-bottom temperatures and the internal tidal currents at the diurnal tidal frequency. The intrusion of this cooler water is probably related to the monsoon-induced upwelling in June. It is loosely interpreted that the interaction between the strong barotropic tides and the steep slope in the central basin of the SCS under the stratified condition in southwest monsoon has generated these internal tides. The dissipation of internal tides from the slope area probably has driven the cold-upwelled water into the ECPM coastal shelf sea when the upwelling intensity is the highest in June and July.

Internal Tide Dissipation at Topography: Triadic Resonant Instability Equatorward and Evanescent Waves Poleward of the Critical Latitude

AbstractSeveral studies have shown the existence of a critical latitude where the dissipation of internal tides is strongly enhanced. Internal tides are internal waves generated by barotropic tidal currents impinging rough topography at the seafloor. Their dissipation and concomitant diapycnal mixing are believed to be important for water masses and the large‐scale ocean circulation. The purpose of this study is to clarify the physical processes at the origin of this strong latitudinal dependence of tidal energy dissipation. We find that different mechanisms are involved equatorward and poleward of the critical latitude. Triadic resonant instabilities are responsible for the dissipation of internal tides equatorward of the critical latitude. In particular, a dominant triad involving the primary internal tide and near‐inertial waves is key. At the critical latitude, the peak of energy dissipation is explained by both increased instability growth rates, and smaller scales of secondary waves thus more prone to break and dissipate their energy. Surprisingly, poleward of the critical latitude, the generation of evanescent waves appears to be crucial. Triadic instabilities have been widely studied, but the transfer of energy to evanescent waves has received comparatively little attention. Our work suggests that the nonlinear transfer of energy from the internal tide to evanescent waves (corresponding to the 2f‐pump mechanism described by Young et al., 2008, https://doi.org/10.1017/S0022112008001742) is an efficient mechanism to dissipate internal tide energy near and poleward of the critical latitude. The theoretical results are confirmed in idealized high‐resolution numerical simulations of a barotropic M2 tide impinging sinusoidal topography in a linearly stratified fluid.

Harmonic generation by nonlinear self-interaction of a single internal wave mode

Weakly nonlinear theory is used to explore the dynamics of a single-mode internal tide in variable stratification with rotation. Nonlinear self-interaction in variable stratification generates a perturbation which is forced with double the original frequency and wavenumber. The dynamics of the perturbation is analogous to a forced harmonic oscillator, with the steady-state solution corresponding to a bound harmonic matching the forcing frequency and wavenumber. When the forcing frequency is near a natural frequency of the system, even a small-amplitude (nearly linear) internal tide may induce a significant harmonic response. Idealized stratification profiles are utilized to explore the relevance of this effect for oceanic$M_{2}$baroclinic internal tides, and the results indicate that a rapidly growing harmonic may occur in some environments near the Equator, but is unlikely at higher latitudes. The results are relevant to recent observations of$M_{4}$(harmonic) internal tides in the South China Sea and elsewhere. More generally, nonlinear self-interaction may contribute to the transfer of energy to smaller scales and the dissipation of baroclinic internal tides, especially in equatorial waters.

Modelling explicit tides in the Indonesian seas: An important process for surface sea water properties

Very intense internal tides take place in Indonesian seas. They dissipate and affect the vertical distribution of temperature and currents, which in turn influence the survival rates and transports of most planktonic organisms at the base of the whole marine ecosystem. This study uses the INDESO physical model to characterize the internal tides spatio-temporal patterns in the Indonesian Seas. The model reproduced internal tide dissipation in agreement with previous fine structure and microstructure observed in-situ in the sites of generation. The model also produced similar water mass transformation as the previous parameterization of Koch-Larrouy et al. (2007), and show good agreement with observations. The resulting cooling at the surface is 0.3°C, with maxima of 0.8°C at the location of internal tides energy, with stronger cooling in austral winter. The cycle of spring tides and neap tides modulates this impact by 0.1°C to 0.3°C. These results suggest that mixing due to internal tides might also upwell nutrients at the surface at a frequency similar to the tidal frequencies. Implications for biogeochemical modelling are important.

Impact of a Mean Current on the Internal Tide Energy Dissipation at the Critical Latitude

AbstractPrevious numerical studies of the dissipation of internal tides in idealized settings suggest the existence of a critical latitude (~29°) where dissipation is enhanced. But observations only indicate a modest enhancement at this latitude. To resolve this difference between observational and numerical results, the authors study the latitudinal dependence of internal tides’ dissipation in more realistic conditions. In particular, the ocean is not a quiescent medium; the presence of large-scale currents or mesoscale eddies can impact the propagation and dissipation of internal tides. This paper investigates the impact of a weak background mean current in numerical simulations. The authors focus on the local dissipation of high spatial mode internal waves near their generation site. The vertical profile of dissipation and its variation with latitude without the mean current are consistent with earlier studies. But adding a weak mean current has a major impact on the latitudinal distribution of dissipation. The peak at the critical latitude disappears, and the dissipation is closer to a constant, albeit with two weak peaks at ~25° and ~35° latitude. This disappearance results from the Doppler shift of the internal tides’ frequency, which hinders the nonlinear transfer of energy to small-scale secondary waves via the parametric subharmonic instability (PSI). The new two weak peaks correspond to the Doppler-shifted critical latitudes of the left- and right-propagating waves. The results are confirmed in simulations with simple sinusoidal topography. Thus, although nonlinear transfers via PSI are efficient at dissipating internal tides, the exact location of the dissipation is sensitive to large-scale oceanic conditions.

Long-range propagation and associated variability of internal tides in the South China Sea

The variability of internal tides during their generation and long-range propagation in the South China Sea (SCS) is investigated by driving a high-resolution numerical model. The present study clarifies the notably different processes of generation, propagation and dissipation between diurnal and semidiurnal internal tides. Internal tides in the SCS originate from multiple source sites, among which the Luzon Strait is dominant, and contributes approximately 90% and 74% of the baroclinic energy for M2 and K1, respectively. To the west of the Luzon Strait, local generation of K1 internal tides inside the SCS is more energetic than the M2 tides. Diurnal and semidiurnal internal tides from the Luzon Strait radiate into the SCS in a north-south asymmetry but with different patterns because of the complex two-ridge system. The tidal beams can travel across the deep basin and finally arrive at the Vietnam coast and Nansha Island more than 1000-1500 km away. During propagation, M2 internal tides maintain a southwestward direction, whereas K1 exhibit complicated wave fields because of the superposition of waves from local sources and island scattering effects. After significant dissipation within the Luzon Strait, the remaining energy travels into the SCS and reduces by more than 90% over a distance of ∼1000 km. Inside the SCS, the K1 internal tides with long crests and flat beam angles are more influenced by seafloor topographical features and thus undergo apparent dissipation along the entire path, whereas the prominent dissipation of M2 internal tides only occurs after their arrival at Zhongsha Island. Effects of internal tidal dissipation and self-attraction and loading on semidiurnal tides in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea: a numerical study

A parameterized internal tide dissipation term and self-attraction and loading (SAL) tide term are introduced in a barotropic numerical model to investigate the dynamics of semidiurnal tidal constituents M2 and S2 in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea (BYECS). The optimal parameters for bottom friction and internal dissipation are obtained through a series of numerical computations. Numerical simulation shows that the tide-generating force contributes 1.2% of M2 power for the entire BYECS and up to 2.8% for the East China Sea deep basin. SAL tide contributes 4.4% of M2 power for the BYECS and up to 9.3% for the East China Sea deep basin. Bottom friction plays a major role in dissipating tidal energy in the shelf regions, and the internal tide effect is important in the deep water regions. Numerical experiments show that artificial removal of tide-generating force in the BYECS can cause a significant difference (as much as 30 cm) in model output. Artificial removal of SAL tide in the BYECS can cause even greater difference, up to 40 cm. This indicates that SAL tide should be taken into account in numerical simulations, especially if the tide-generating force is considered.

Climatic Impacts of Parameterized Local and Remote Tidal Mixing

Abstract Turbulent mixing driven by breaking internal tides plays a primary role in the meridional overturning and oceanic heat budget. Most current climate models explicitly parameterize only the local dissipation of internal tides at the generation sites, representing the remote dissipation of low-mode internal tides that propagate away through a uniform background diffusivity. In this study, a simple energetically consistent parameterization of the low-mode internal-tide dissipation is derived and implemented in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Earth System Model with GOLD component (GFDL-ESM2G). The impact of remote and local internal-tide dissipation on the ocean state is examined using a series of simulations with the same total amount of energy input for mixing, but with different scalings of the vertical profile of dissipation with the stratification and with different idealized scenarios for the distribution of the low-mode internal-tide energy dissipation: uniformly over ocean basins, continental slopes, or continental shelves. In these idealized scenarios, the ocean state, including the meridional overturning circulation, ocean ventilation, main thermocline thickness, and ocean heat uptake, is particularly sensitive to the vertical distribution of mixing by breaking low-mode internal tides. Less sensitivity is found to the horizontal distribution of mixing, provided that distribution is in the open ocean. Mixing on coastal shelves only impacts the large-scale circulation and water mass properties where it modifies water masses originating on shelves. More complete descriptions of the distribution of the remote part of internal-tide-driven mixing, particularly in the vertical and relative to water mass formation regions, are therefore required to fully parameterize ocean turbulent mixing.

Numerical study of tidal dynamics in the South China Sea with adjoint method

We adopt a parameterized internal tide dissipation term to the two-dimensional (2-D) shallow water equations, and develop the corresponding adjoint model to investigate tidal dynamics in the South China Sea (SCS). The harmonic constants derived from 63 tidal gauge stations and 24 TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) satellite altimeter crossover points are assimilated into the adjoint model to minimize the deviations of the simulated results and observations by optimizing the bottom friction coefficient and the internal tide dissipation coefficient. Tidal constituents M2, S2, K1 and O1 are simulated simultaneously. The numerical results (assimilating only tidal gauge data) agree well with T/P data showing that the model results are reliable. The co-tidal charts of M2, S2, K1 and O1 are obtained, which reflect the characteristics of tides in the SCS. The tidal energy flux is analyzed based on numerical results. The strongest tidal energy flux appears in the Luzon Strait (LS) for both semi-diurnal and diurnal tidal constituents. The analysis of tidal energy dissipation indicates that the bottom friction dissipation occurs mainly in shallow water area, meanwhile the internal tide dissipation is mainly concentrated in the LS and the deep basin of the SCS. The tidal energetics in the LS is examined showing that the tidal energy input closely balances the tidal energy dissipation.

The Impact of Subtidal Circulation on Internal-Tide-Induced Mixing in the Philippine Sea

Abstract This study uses a primitive equation model to estimate the time-varying M2 internal tide dissipation in the Philippine Sea in the presence of the subtidal circulation. The time-mean diapycnal diffusivity due to the M2 internal tide is estimated to be 4.0–4.8 × 10−4 m2 s−1 at the Luzon Strait and 2–9 × 10−5 m2 s−1 in the Philippine Sea basin. The variability in internal tides and their interactions with the subtidal ocean circulation results in significant spatial and temporal variability in the energy available for mixing. The subtidal circulation influences internal-tide-induced mixing in two ways: by introducing variability in internal tide generation and by increased dissipation of baroclinic energy associated with greater velocity shear. Close to the generation site, mixing is dominated by high-mode internal tide dissipation, while in the far field the influence of the mesoscale energy on internal tide dissipation is significant, resulting in increased dissipation. This study presents model-based estimates of the important and relatively unknown effect of mesoscale circulation on internal-tide-induced mixing away from internal tide generation sites in a region of high eddy kinetic energy.

Seasonal variation of semidiurnal internal tides in the East/Japan Sea

The seasonal variation of semidiurnal internal tides in the East/Japan Sea was investigated using 25 month long output from a real-time ocean forecasting system. The z coordinate eddy-resolving high-resolution numerical model, called the RIAM ocean model, incorporates data assimilation that nudges temperature and salinity fields together with volume transport through the Korea Strait to produce realistic oceanic currents and stratification. In addition to atmospheric forcing, it includes tidal forcing of 16 major components along open boundaries. The model generates energetic semidiurnal internal tides around the northern entrance of the Korea Strait. Energy conversion from barotropic to baroclinic (internal) tides varies seasonally with maxima in September (ranging 0.48–0.52 GW) and minima in March (ranging 0.11–0.16 GW). This seasonal variation is induced by the seasonality in stratification near the southwestern East/Japan Sea. The propagation distance of the internal tides is associated with generation intensity and wavelength. From late summer to early winter, the semidiurnal internal tides travel relatively far from the generation region due to stratification changes; its energy dissipates less as a result of longer wavelengths. Our results suggest that spatiotemporal variation of internal-tide-induced mixing due to the seasonality in the generation, propagation, and dissipation of internal tides should be considered for a more realistic simulation of water masses and circulation in models of the East/Japan Sea.

Sensitivity of the Ocean State to Lee Wave–Driven Mixing

Abstract Diapycnal mixing plays a key role in maintaining the ocean stratification and the meridional overturning circulation (MOC). In the ocean interior, it is mainly sustained by breaking internal waves. Two important classes of internal waves are internal tides and lee waves, generated by barotropic tides and geostrophic flows interacting with rough topography, respectively. Currently, regarding internal wave–driven mixing, most climate models only explicitly parameterize the local dissipation of internal tides. In this study, the authors explore the combined effects of internal tide– and lee wave–driven mixing on the ocean state. A series of sensitivity experiments using the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory CM2G ocean–ice–atmosphere coupled model are performed, including a parameterization of lee wave–driven mixing using a recent estimate for the global map of energy conversion into lee waves, in addition to the tidal mixing parameterization. It is shown that, although the global energy input in the deep ocean into lee waves (0.2 TW; where 1 TW = 1012 W) is small compared to that into internal tides (1.4 TW), lee wave–driven mixing makes a significant impact on the ocean state, notably on the ocean thermal structure and stratification, as well as on the MOC. The vertically integrated circulation is also impacted in the Southern Ocean, which accounts for half of the lee wave energy flux. Finally, it is shown that the different spatial distribution of the internal tide and lee wave energy input impacts the sensitivity described in this study. These results suggest that lee wave–driven mixing should be parameterized in climate models, preferably using more physically based parameterizations that allow the internal lee wave–driven mixing to evolve in a changing ocean.

Internal Tides and Mixing in a Submarine Canyon with Time-Varying Stratification

Abstract The time variability of the energetics and turbulent dissipation of internal tides in the upper Monterey Submarine Canyon (MSC) is examined with three moored profilers and five ADCP moorings spanning February–April 2009. Highly resolved time series of velocity, energy, and energy flux are all dominated by the semidiurnal internal tide and show pronounced spring-neap cycles. However, the onset of springtime upwelling winds significantly alters the stratification during the record, causing the thermocline depth to shoal from about 100 to 40 m. The time-variable stratification must be accounted for because it significantly affects the energy, energy flux, the vertical modal structures, and the energy distribution among the modes. The internal tide changes from a partly horizontally standing wave to a more freely propagating wave when the thermocline shoals, suggesting more reflection from up canyon early in the observational record. Turbulence, computed from Thorpe scales, is greatest in the bottom 50–150 m and shows a spring-neap cycle. Depth-integrated dissipation is 3 times greater toward the end of the record, reaching 60 mW m−2 during the last spring tide. Dissipation near a submarine ridge is strongly tidally modulated, reaching 10−5 W kg−1 (10–15-m overturns) during spring tide and appears to be due to breaking lee waves. However, the phasing of the breaking is also affected by the changing stratification, occurring when isopycnals are deflected downward early in the record and upward toward the end.

Propagation and dissipation of internal tides in the Oslofjord

Abstract. Observations of velocity, pressure, temperature and salinity in the inner Oslofjord have been analysed to provide new information about the relationships between internal tides generated by tidal currents across the Drøbak Sill and dissipation and diffusivity in the fjord. The most energetic vertical displacement of density surfaces inside the sill is associated with the first internal mode that has maximum amplitude around sill depth. The amplitude of the vertical displacement around sill depth correlates with the amplitude of the surface elevation, and, at a distance of 1 km inside the sill, the ratio between the amplitudes is 38, decreasing to 11 at a distance of 10 km. The greatest vertical displacements inside the sill, however, are found at 40 m depth. These latter internal waves are not associated with a first-mode internal tide, but are rather associated with higher internal modes controlled by stratification. The energy flux of the internal wave propagating from the Drøbak Sill into the inner fjord on the east side of the Håøya Island is estimated to vary in the range 155–430 kW. This is the same order of magnitude as the estimated barotropic energy loss over the Drøbak Sill (250 kW), but only 4–10% of the total barotropic flux. Approximately 40–70% of the internal energy flux is lost within a distance of 10 km from the sill. The mean diffusivity below 90 m depth in this area (~20 cm2 s−1) is more than four times higher than in the rest of the fjord (~5 cm2 s−1 or less).

Factors influencing the distribution of epibenthic megafauna across the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone

Current de-oxygenation of the oceans is associated with severe habitat loss and distinct changes in the species composition of bentho-pelagic communities. We investigated the distributions of epibenthic megafauna across the Peruvian OMZ (11°S) at water depths ranging from ∼80 to 1000m water depth using sea floor images. Likely controls of distributions were adressed by combining the abundances of major groups with geochemical parameters and sea-floor topography. In addition to bottom-water oxygen levels and organic-carbon availability, particular emphasis is laid on the effects of local hydrodynamics. Beside the occurrence of microbial mats at the shelf and upper slope, distinct zones of highly abundant megafauna, dominated by gastropods (900 ind. m−2), ophiuroids (140 ind. m−2), and pennatulaceans (20 ind. m−2), were observed at the lower boundary of the OMZ. Their distribution extended from 460m water depth (O2 levels < 2μM), where gastropods were abundant, to 680m (O2 ∼6μM) where epifaunal abundances declined sharply. Bottom water O2 represents a major factor that limits the ability of metazoans to invade deeply into the OMZ where they could have access to labile organic carbon. However, depending on their feeding mode, the distribution of organisms appeared to be related to local hydrodynamics caused by the energy dissipation of incipient internal M2 tides affecting the suspension, transport and deposition of food particles. This was particularly evident in certain sections of the investigated transect. At these potentially critical sites, energy dissipation of internal tides is associated with high bottom shear stress and high turbulences and coincides with elevated turbidity levels in the benthic boundary layer, increased Zr/Al-ratios, low sedimentation rates as well as a shift in the grain size towards coarser particles. In or near such areas, abundant suspension-feeding organisms, such as ophiuroids, pennatulaceans, and tunicates were present, whereas deposit-feeding gastropods were absent. The influence of local hydrodynamic conditions on the distribution of epibenthic organisms has been neglected in OMZ studies, although it has been considered in other settings.

Energetics of internal tides around the Kerguelen Plateau from modeling and altimetry

A barotropic tidal model, with a parameterization term to account for the internal wave drag energy dissipation, is used to examine areas of possible M2 internal tide generation in the Kerguelen Plateau region. Barotropic energy flux and a distribution of wave drag dissipation are computed. The results suggest important conversion of barotropic energy into baroclinic tide generation over the northern Kerguelen Plateau shelf break, consistent with a theoretical criterion based on ocean stratification, tidal forcing frequency, and bathymetric gradients. The sea surface height signatures of time‐coherent internal tides are studied using TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason‐1 altimeter data, whose ascending tracks cross nearly perpendicular to the eastern and western Kerguelen Plateau shelf break. Oscillations of a few centimeters associated with phase‐locked internal tides propagate away fromthe plateau over distances of several hundred kilometers with a ∼110 km wavelength. When reaching the frontal area of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the internal tide cannot be identified because of the aliasing of mesoscale variability into the same alias band as M2. Finally, using altimeter data, we estimate the M2 barotropic tidal power converted through the internal tide generation process. We find consistent values with the barotropic model parameterization estimation, which is also in good agreement with global internal tide model estimates. Combined with modeling, this study has shown that altimetry can be used to estimate internal tide dissipation.

A frequency–wavenumber tidal analysis for deriving internal-tide harmonic constants from TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) measurements of sea-surface height (SSH) has been developed, taking advantage of the evident temporal and spatial coherence and the weak dissipation of internal tides. Previous analyses consisted of simple tidal analysis at individual points, which gave inconsistent harmonic constants at altimeter track crossover points. Such analyses have difficulty in distinguishing between the effects of interference, incoherence, and dissipation. The frequency–wavenumber analysis provides an objective way to interpolate the internal tides measured along altimetry tracks to any arbitrary point, while leveraging all available data for optimal tidal estimates. Tidal analysis of T/P data from 2000 to 2007 is used to predict in situ time series measured during the 2001–2002 Hawaiian Ocean mixing experiment (HOME), the 1987 reciprocal tomography experiment (RTE87), and the 1991 acoustic mid-ocean dynamics experiment (AMODE), demonstrating both the temporal coherence and the lack of incoherent elements to this wave propagation. It has been conjectured that significant energy would be lost from mode-1 internal tides as they cross the 28.9°N critical latitude of parametric subharmonic instability (PSI). No apparent change in amplitude at 28.9°N was detected by this analysis, however. Further, after correcting for changes in background stratification, the amplitude of the mode-1 internal tide was found to decrease by less than 20% over the 2000 km between the Hawaiian Ridge and 40°N. A significant fraction of the variability of internal waves, that component associated with mode-1 internal tides, appears to be predictable over most of the world's oceans, using harmonic constants derived from satellite altimetry.

A Mechanism for Local Dissipation of Internal Tides Generated at Rough Topography

Abstract Fine- and micro-structure observations indicate that turbulent mixing is enhanced within O(1) km above rough topography. Enhanced mixing is associated with internal wave breaking and, in many regions of the ocean, has been linked to the breaking and dissipation of internal tides. The generation and dissipation of internal tides are explored in this study using a high-resolution two-dimensional nonhydrostatic numerical model, which explicitly resolves the instabilities leading to wave breaking, configured in an idealized domain with a realistic multiscale topography and flow characteristics. The control simulation, chosen to represent the Brazil Basin region, produces a vertical profile of energy dissipation and temporal characteristics of finescale motions that are consistent with observations. Results suggest that a significant fraction of mixing in the bottom O(1) km of the ocean is sustained by the transfer of energy from the large-scale internal tides to smaller-scale internal waves by nonlinear wave–wave interactions. The time scale of the energy transfer to the smaller scales is estimated to be on the order of a few days. A suite of sensitivity experiments is carried out to examine the dependence of the energy transfer time scale and energy dissipation on topographic roughness, tidal amplitude, and Coriolis frequency parameters. Implications for tidal mixing parameterizations are discussed.
