Toxic substances from coal energy: an overview.

Environmental concerns over increased coal consumption are fully justified by the past history of coal use. Although improved technology has provided some safeguards, increased utilization will require mining practices, emission control technologies, and waste disposal procedures that are not yet fully integrated into the routine use of the coal energy system. The Committee on Health and Evnironmental Effects of Increased Coal Utilization identified six critical environmental issues which are of concern: coal mine worker health and safety, reclamation of arid lands from surface mining, the health effects of coal combustion products, toxic trace elements in coal combustion wastes, acid fallout, and global effects of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This presentation addresses the first four of these issues.

Acute toxicity of dechlorinated DDT, chlordane and lindane to bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and Daphnia magna.

The acute toxicity of DDT and chlordane formulations was considerably reduced by nickel boridecatalyzed dechlorination. However, the reduction in toxicity was not sufficient to warrant the use of this method for the ultimate disposal of these pesticides. The dechlorination of lindane by this method appears to have potential as a chemical disposal procedure.

The Control of the Refuse Incineration Plant

The present waste treatment (especially manicipal rebuse treatment) cannot rely only on national purifying, as the result, needs treatment cotrol being considered the enviromental pollution control.Incineration in Japan has been used for the above treatment, and it has been considered as the best procedure from the sight of decrease of volume, and stability of nature.The treatment and disposal procedure of waste in Japan consists 75% of incineration, 45% of land fill, 2. 5% of composting and 7. 6 of domestic treatment.The report has dealt with the procedure and condition of the incineration plant.The property of ash depends upon the incicinerator condition.The ignition loss shows about 10-15% (the standard ignition loss is less 15%), and it shows 8-20% at the continuous firing. The dust concentration by thc air pollution control restrains less 0.2g/Nm3 when the effluent gas volume is than 40, 000 Nm3/ hr., and 0.7g/Nm3 when less 40, 000 Nm3/hr.Generally, at the fixed grate incinerator the above concetration keeps less o. 7g/ Nm3 with the M. C., and at the most continuous incinerators, it keeps less 0.1.-0.2 g/Nm3 with E. P.The report added the description of toxious gasses and heavy metals.

Construction Solid Waste

This paper examines the classification and composition of construction solid waste and debris. The components of solid waste management systems are reviewed with emphasis on disposal procedures. Incineration, burial, and recycling options are evaluated for application to construction wastes. A strategy designed for the construction management engineer is presented.

Lagoon Disposal of Water Treatment Plant Wastes

The use of lagoons for concentration and storage of sludges is frequently a desirable method leading to satisfactory disposal of the water treatment plant wastes. The 6,000,000 gpd water treatment plant of the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-VPI Water Authority includes a 1,000,000-gal water lagoon built for sludge concentration and storage. In view of the limited data available on the operational efficiency of such lagoons, studies were conducted to analyze the performance of this unit and to subsequently develop design parameters and recommend operational procedures for lagoon disposal of these wastes.
