The use of display devices has become an integral part of modern life. The vulnerability of glass displays to cracks and fractures due to accidental drops and impacts has increased demand for crack resistant glasses. Several efforts like compositional designing, post-treatment methods and introduction of dopants have been reported in the literature to improve the mechanical strength of various glass systems. In the present article, crack resistant properties of glasses as a function of composition and preparation techniques have been reviewed which may help in advancing our understanding of critical factors influencing mechanical properties, paving the way for future breakthroughs in display device technology.
