Disney in Black and White: An Analysis of Race Representation Within Disney Animated Films From 1937 to 2021

This study examined Disney studios’ portrayals of race as it relates to the physical, mental, and social characteristics of major characters ( N = 319) within Disney animated films released from 1937 to 2021 ( N = 59). Findings revealed most of the characters featured were portrayed as White (68.3%) whereas BIPOC characters made up 31.7% of the total. Results suggest that BIPOC characters were significantly more likely to be featured in supporting character roles, with White characters featured in both the protagonist and antagonist roles. We further observed a limited integration of characters of varying races in a singular film.

A STUDY ON FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE USED IN THE SELECTED SONGS OF THE “ENCANTO” MOVIE’S SOUNDTRACK

Practically, this research engages literary works to critically examine the figurative language represented in recent Disney animated films’ soundtrack, “Encanto”, which was released in 2021. Meanwhile, the urgency of this research is the need of thorough understanding of figurative language in the song’s lyrics. In relation to which, the objectives of this research is to find the kinds, the most dominant usage and general meaning of figurative language used in the selected songs of the original soundtrack of Disney’s animated film “Encanto”. As for the works of this research, it is to unpack the constructions of the figurative language through an analysis of the figuration of the Disney movie’s soundtrack. In this matter, this research analyze the lyrics which are discursively embodied in these Disney movies in complex and contradictory ways, for such and therefore Disney works on and through these bodies are then accordingly undertaken to fix and contain the ideological constructions of language, literature, and culture. Since language gives people the spirit and symbolic of expressions, in order to gather the aforesaid objectives, the researchers use qualitative method with descriptive approach, by gathering information mainly from books and international journals. The researcher discovered nine different kinds of figurative languages namely metaphor, simile, metonymy, irony, personification, paradox, hyperbole, synecdoche, and idiom. Apparently the researcher identified that the most figurative language used in such Disney’s animated film “Encanto” is metaphor.

The gendered behaviors displayed by Disney protagonists.

Previous research suggests that the portrayal of male and female protagonists in Disney animations may be changing over time. The current study examined the portrayal of gendered behaviors displayed within some of Disney's most successful animated feature length films, including those beyond the Disney princess franchise. Extending the scope of the Disney animated films analyzed was important because both young girls and young boys report little personal interest in male characters within the Disney princess animations. This suggests that it is important to look beyond the Disney princess franchise to understand the gendered behaviors displayed by potentially influential male Disney protagonists. The current study also considered a greater number of masculine and feminine behaviors as well as some gender-neutral traits which had yet to be incorporated. A quantitative content analysis of 39 Disney protagonists from films released between 1937 and 2021 was conducted. The results revealed that male and female protagonists were statistically higher in feminine than masculine traits. Female protagonists from the earliest animations were the most feminine. However, there was no statistical difference in the gendered portrayals of females in the animations released in the 1990s and those released from 2009 to 2021 suggesting some continued stereotyping in females' profiles. Alternatively, male characters were more feminine relatively consistently across time-points. This study concludes that Disney is persistently portraying stereotyped female protagonists, and this could have implications on young females' behavioral profiles. However, the extent to which feminine traits are being celebrated when displayed by male protagonists needs to be examined, as well as the potential relationship between such messages and boys' behaviors and children's conceptualizations of gender more broadly.

Representasi Ideologi Feminisme dalam Film Animasi Encanto: Sebuah Kajian Semiotika

The animated film Encanto, which told the narrative of a magical Colombian family, introduced a new paradigm in the representation of women in the film industry. The unconventional female characters in this Disney-produced picture drew public notice and helped it win Academy Awards. The multiple feminisms represented by these female figures are investigated descriptively and qualitatively. Data were gathered by watching the sequences of Encanto's film and paying attention to how feminism is depicted; taking pictures of each scene that depicts feminism; and then inventorying the acquired data. The data was evaluated and classified according to the feminism depicted in the scenes and discussions using John Fiske's semiotic theory. Existentialist Feminism, Postmodern Feminism, Psychoanalytic Feminism, and Ecofeminism Feminism were discovered to be the feminism streams portrayed in Encanto's animated films. These diverse streams of feminism are a breath of fresh air, breaking the preconceptions of female protagonists in prior Disney animated films.

Throughout the long development of Disney's animated films for more than half a century, after experiencing the brilliance of the "hand-drawn animation era" and the downturn and hesitation of the "3D animation era", Disney opened up a new era of animated films with the new "3D+ hand-drawn" technology. Its breakthrough in production technology and the inheritance of animation art make it represent the highest level of today's animated films. This paper will try to explore the technical breakthrough and artistic inheritance of Disney's animated films through the brief tracing of Disney's animation production tradition, taking Frozen and Zootopia as examples.

The Ashes of Tragedy: Parental Death and Child Character Development in Bambi and The Lion King.

The Walt Disney company has been the topic of extensive research for decades; among the explored subjects and identified themes is Disney's fixation on death. Disney has capitalized on the incredibly traumatic childhood experience of the death of a parent by featuring parental death as a major narrative component. Speculation remains regarding the accuracy of not only death presentations in media, but death influence on characters. Using textual analysis, this paper explores the role of parental death on child character development within two Disney animated films. Analysis demonstrates an inaccurate depiction of parental death influence on children in a positive light - essentially overlooking the trauma associated with loss during childhood and the mediating factors of long-term bereavement outcomes. Conversations remain to be had regarding how these inaccurate depictions of death and dying in popular culture influence the children consuming them.

The Psychological Impact of the Changing Images of Female Characters in Disney Animated Films on Teenagers

The animation film is an art form that reflects human social life and meets the needs of spiritual life. As a forerunner of popular culture, Disney animated films record many social changes. This article discusses the presentation and impacts of female characters in Disney animated film on young people. The evolution of its classic animation themes and female princess images reflects the change in women's status and the development of the feminist movement. The continuous enrichment of the female image in the identity, appearance and personality of Disney animated films reflects its diversified development and the establishment and promotion of female status in personal growth, marriage and love. Social learning theory considers how both environmental and cognitive factors interact to influence human learning and behavior. Through the social learning process, young people accept the values expressed in Disney animated films.

The Embodiment and Effects of Feminism in Disney Films in the 20th and 21st

With the rise of feminism, the female characters in Disney's animated films break away from the original female stereotypes. The feminist content in Disney has evolved with the wave of the feminist movement. More and more brave, astute and independent female characters appear in movies. Compared with the simple princess movies, which tell the story of the elegant but weak princess who is rescued by the prince, these new female characters reflect the change of people's thoughts. These feminist contents promote the concept of gender equality, show the diversity of women's beauty, and deepen people's self-affirmation. However, some evidence shows that Disney characters have deformed aesthetics and tend to cause unhealthy body control. But people can improve this problem by being tolerant of beauty’s distance and paying attention to the beauty within. Parents can also guide their children to learn about women's rights in movies so that the improved Disney movies can play a more positive role.

DELINEATION OF WOMEN IDENTITY IN THE DISNEY ANIMATED FILM ECANTO (2019)

Disney's animated films is produced not only to provide entertainment but also to deliver messages in it. Most Disney animated films have a target audience of children. The element of persuasion that includes every message will be one of children's character-building in real life, including how the film constitutes gender identity in children, which will affect the development of their lives. One of Disney's animated films is Encanto film which was released in 2021. The purpose of this research is to describe the moral values of the characters in Encanto film, especially observing the identity of the women depicted in this film. The research method uses a qualitative narrative approach to analyze Encanto film. This study uses Stuart Hall's representation theory and Christian Metz's Semiotic Analysis Method (MAS), or cinematographic semiotics. By the critical paradigm, this MAS is qualitatively interpretive. A method that focuses on signs and texts as objects of study and how researchers interpret and understand the code (decoding) behind the signs and texts. The study revealed the women's identity on the main character, Mirabel in the film Encanto. This identity is mainly found from the stereotypical Mirabel identity as a woman. The other marginalization, subordination, power, and workload differentiate Mirabel’s identity as a woman from men in Encanto film

MULTICULTURAL VALUES IN DISNEY ANIMATED FILMS

This qualitative research focuses on the discussion of multiculturalism which is essential to do because in the current digital era, people are increasingly active moving from one place to another. Consequently, more and more countries are inhabited by people from different kinds of ethnic groups, cultures, races, etc. and multicultural values are indeed necessary to be applied. As the issue of cultural diversity has been broadly discussed, it is also found in Disney animated films. This study applied the semiotic approach to analyze data in the forms of dialogs as well as scene images obtained from the observation of Disney animated films. The results of study suggested that multicultural values can refer to respect and peace which play an essential role in multicultural society. The study also revealed that the observed animated films could represent multiculturalism through the portraits of animated film characters, traditions and customs as well as philosophy from different cultures. A Comparison Between Disney Earlier and Recent Princess of The Third Generation of Disney Animated Films as Seen in Rapunzel in Tangled and Moana in Moana

This study compares the girl power characteristics such as bravery, independence, and intelligence in identifying Rapunzel as the earlier princess character and Moana as the recent princess character of the third generation of Disney Princesses in the two Disney Princess Animated Films titled Tangled and Moana. As a result of this study, I found that in terms of bravery, Moana as the recent princess, is more daring to make decisions and take risks when compared to Rapunzel as the earlier princess of the third generation. In terms of independence, it can also be seen that Rapunzel still seems to rely more on other people to help her find a way and protect herself, in contrast to Moana, who can find the destination by herself and work together with other people and make them become her partners. In terms of intelligence, both Rapunzel and Moana are good at managing their daily activities, but in terms of solving problems, Rapunzel still uses the power of magical stuff, unlike Moana, who uses all her mind and strength to solve the problems she faces.Keywords: girl power, bravery, independence, intelligence, characteristics

Study on Self-growth of Female Characters in Disney Animation from the Perspective of Feminism

Disney animated films can be divided into classics, live action with animation, 3D computer animation, claymation animation, movietoons animation and video premiere. No matter what type of animation, Disney animation is famous the all over the world for its imagination, exquisite painting and delicate stories. Disney animated films constantly reflect the changes and development of the times and the development of feminism. This study analyzes the self-growth of female characters in Disney animation from three aspects: patriarchal society, the influence of feminism and modern society, and discusses the changes in the outlook on marriage and life. In a patriarchal society, feminist consciousness was suppressed, and female growth was greatly constrained. After the awakening and development of feminism, women gradually awaken their consciousness, and feminist characters show a new path to growth through their own efforts. In modern society, feminism has further developed, and female characters in Disney animation have lived a more colorful life on the road to self-growth under the influence of feminism. At the same time, this study analyzes the changes for in female characters in Disney animation from the reason of feminism, political economy and consumerism.

Princesses and paupers: a content analysis of socioeconomic status in animated Disney films

ABSTRACT This paper examines depictions of SES in Disney animated films to learn about the stereotypes of different socioeconomic status (SES) groups that these films reinforce or dispel. As Disney films are frequently watched by children, and may have important developmental implications for the internalization of stereotypes. Sixty-one animated Disney films were coded f (323 characters). Characters were coded for their SES and various roles and behaviors. Results suggest low SES characters are underrepresented compared to the US population, and that Disney’s portrayal of SES both reinforces and contradicts stereotypes.

A Descriptive Analysis of Non-obligatory Shifts in Three Disney Animated Films Dubbed into Modern Standard Arabic

This qualitative quantitative descriptive-analytical study aimed to describe the non-obligatory shifts employed in three English Disney animated films dubbed into MSA by applying Toury’s (1995/2012) normative model and shifts introduced in the course of his applied case studies. The researcher described and analyzed preliminary, initial and operational norms (non-obligatory shifts) employed on the level of three textual segments: the lexical-semantic, the stylistic, and the prosodic. The researcher compared those shifts with the original choices in the English versions of three selected Disney animated films. In the light of Toury’s theory (1995/2012), the current study investigated the hypothesis that the accepted socio-cultural, ideological, and linguistic norms of the Arabic culture directed the choices of the non-obligatory shifts chosen by the Arabic dubbers of English Disney animations dubbed into MSA. This investigation was conducted in application to three case studies, namely, Tangled (2010), Frozen (2013) and Big Hero 6 (2014). In order to decide the most frequently used shifts in the process of dubbing, the frequency rate of each non-obligatory shift was calculated to determine the highest frequently used shift. The study came to the conclusion that there is a direct relationship between the non-obligatory shifts (operational norms) applied during dubbing on the one hand and the socio-cultural, ideological, and linguistic norms imposed by the target culture on the other hand. Those target culture norms governed not only the operational choices but also the preliminary choices of the three selected Disney animated films dubbed into MSA. Affected by the preliminary and operational norms, Arab dubbers’ tendency towards producing acceptable rather than adequate translations decided the initial norms.
