A new etchant for developing etch pits at screw dislocation sites in Ni 3Al single crystals was tested. Using this etchant, both fresh and aged dislocations can be revealed on {001} surfaces. The usefulness of the etching technique was demonstrated further on crystals which had been plastically deformed either under an impact load or under a hardness indentation. It was shown that there is a direct correspondence between the etch-pit pattern and slip lines around the indentation. Observations were also made on the dislocation etch pits in Ni 3Al single crystals alloyed with boron and hafnium.
