Between Piety and Lifestyle : Hijab Syar’i on the Commodification Practices of Islamic Culture Industry

The syar'i hijab has become a global fashion product targeting Muslim women, nowadays it is part of the cultural industry that is captured by capitalism in pursuit of profit. The syar'i hijab that displays visualization of the discourse of piety and beauty makes consumption practices an effort to articulate the identity of Muslim women for religious observance. Massive distribution through the media or fashion show events is part of the visualization of the lifestyle of fashion fans which is echoed for the perpetuation of capitalism in the circulation of production, distribution and consumption of hijab products which is echoed through the discourse of covering the genitals according to syar'i. . Consumption of hijab product brands shows social class to differentiate themselves. This often leads to aesthetic violence in an effort to match the tastes of the lower class to force them to buy hijab products with the same brand as the figure they idolize. Consumption practices that show the articulation of Muslim women's identities in religious discourse are increasingly being captured by capitalism in an effort to create changes in hijab modes. The concept of obsolescence planning is part of production management for hijab product offerings that continue to grow, and capitalism is increasingly hidden behind the discourse of piety.

(Un)representing Belarus(ianness): Ihar Babkoŭ’s Adam Klakotski and His Shadows (2001)

ABSTRACT National identity discourses and narratives of history and memory are highly politicized in post-Soviet Belarus. While official narratives stress the idea of brotherhood with Russia and the importance of the Soviet cultural legacy, counter-narratives focus on the idea of a national revival and on mourning for the pre-Soviet past. In the late 1990s and early years of the new millennium, authors of counter-narratives began to work with philosophical models in their rethinking of “Belarusianness.” The peak of this philosophical turn was marked by Ihar Babkoŭ’s Adam Klakotski and His Shadows (2001). Under the influence of post-colonial theory and post-structuralist/deconstructive philosophy, and with the help of narrative fragmentation devices, the novel proposed a unique reconceptualization of Belarusianness. Based on the assumption that every identity has a negative fundament, Adam Klakotski deconstructs the linearity of national(ist) narratives on different levels. In this article, the author analyzes the philosophical aspects of Adam Klakotski and the role the novel has played politically, and he compares it to the works of two other key figures of Belarusian counter-culture: Little Guidebook to the Sun City by Artur Klinaŭ, and Valiantsin Akudovich’s There Is No Me and The Code of Absence.

Identity, Immigration, and Islam: Neo-reactionary and New-Right Perceptions and Prescriptions.

This article is an effort to examine the discourses of French identity in crisis by four disparate New Right and "neo-reactionary" intellectuals (Alain de Benoist, Guillaume Faye, Renaud Camus, and Alain Finkielkraut) whose work contributes to the anti-immigration, anti-Islam and identity-based thought of twenty-first-century France. It argues that shared discourse of French identity in crisis as a result of Muslim immigration provides a common ground for these intellectuals despite their diverse origins, their disagreement over how to define French identity, and their prescriptions for its salvation.

The Art of Masked Advocacy: The Care of the Self of Gay College Men Living with HIV

This arts-based narrative in/queer/y explores the subjectivity of gay college men living with HIV through the stories and art of two participants. Despite their significantly different lives, the two men shared a subjectivity that was also reflected in the lives of other participants. Care of the self reflects Foucault's search for a way of life that resisted normalizing discourses of identity and served as our conceptual framework. Homophobic AIDS discourse, which manifested as institutional silence about the presence of students living with HIV on college campuses, and homonormative discourses of gay respectability created an environment of contempt. This environment resulted in a care of the self style we call the art of masked advocacy. This art involved advocating for themselves and other students living with HIV while attempting to mitigate contempt. Combating institutional silence and other forms of contempt for gay men living with HIV creates individual and institutional tensions, which we explore.

THE PARADOX OF KUBROSISWO'S ART IDENTITY: BETWEEN ISLAM AND JAVANESENESS

This study was motivated by intellectual anxiety about the study of the art of Kubrosiswo. So far, most of the existing studies have focused on the discourse of Islamic identity attached to this art. This study intends to look at the arts in terms of two sides of identity, namely Islamic and Javanese. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method with steps that include: data collection, data validation, analysis, and synthesis. The results of this study show that the art of Kubrosiswo since its birth has brought religious sentiments, in the form of anti-communism. This articulation is manifested in his extra-aesthetic identity which contains elements of Islamic culture, especially from the songs used. Even so, there is another side to this art, especially those that show Javanese characteristics, such as the use of offerings and the presence of a trance session from each performance. This to some extent becomes a kind of paradox of identity for this art.

The Third International Scientific and Practical Conference Dialogue of Cultures and Civilization

From April 14 to 16, 2022, the Moscow State Linguistic University hosted the 3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference Dialogue of Cultures and Civilizations. The event was organized by the Moscow State Linguistic University in cooperation with the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Association of Educational Organizations Scientific and Educational Theological Organization. Researchers from Astrakhan, Voronezh, Kazan, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Syktyvkar, Ufa, Yaroslavl, as well as from China and France took part in the sessions. Those were: Philosophical Search for the Foundations of Language, Culture and Society; Historical and Cultural Heritage and Modern Documentary Sources of Information in Russia and Foreign Countries; Cultural Identity in the Modern World: Analytical Models, Ways of Construction and Forms of Representation; Religious Identity and Theological Discourse in the Context of Modernity; Intellectual Potential Management in Organizational Structures of Digital Economy; Psychology and Pedagogy: Methodology, History, Theory, Practice; Foreign Language in the Sphere of Professional Communication; Physical Safety and National Health. The 3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference Dialogue of Cultures and Civilizations became a significant event in the scientific life of the capital, the high content level of which has been repeatedly noted in speeches by leading Russian and foreign researchers, as well as representatives of public authorities.

Public Theology in the Context of the Religious Dualization Phenomenon in Multiple Modernities

Abstract This article aims to analyze the tasks of public theology concerning the religious phenomenon in a context of multiple modernities. The interaction of religion and public space may take the form of a disjunction between public and private that strengthens the rigid discourse of religious identity against a common project of society. In this context, the place of religion in the public life becomes a significant challenge for public theology. Therefore, in dialogue with the theoretical perspectives of Jürgen Habermas, David Tracy, Michel de Certeau, and Pope Francis, this text proposes a movement towards a complex and interdisciplinary approach that values a shared humanity and responsibility with the common home.

“Human Derelicts” and the Deterioration of the Nation: Discourses of Identity and Otherness in Victorian and Edwardian Britain (1860s-1910s)

In the second half of the Victorian period, and even more so at the turn of the century, fears for what was considered the health of the nation started to grip Britain. The second Boer War (1899-1902) shook the already eroding self-confidence of an Empire that was preoccupied with what was described as the fitness of the race. Scientists joined the heated debate, some arguing that the British stock was deteriorating. The other, the alien element, in this discourse, was not necessarily a foreign man or woman; the outsider was coming from within the nation. This paper explores this altering discourse as well as the development of a counter-discourse that was carried by sociologists keen to reintegrate those who were stigmatised into the nation, eager to highlight environmental factors and social injustices and reluctant to oust some citizens from the community. It seeks to question and shed historical light on the construct that is Britishness in the context of raging debates on identity and nation in post-Brexit Britain.

Debating the legal recognition of gender identity in parliamentary discourse: Human rights and queer politics

This study documented the rhetorical constructions of ‘human rights’ in political discourse and the potential implications of their invocation as a frame for LGBTQI+ claims. The minutes of the VI Greek Parliamentary session on a bill related to the legal recognition of gender identity, conducted in 2017, were analyzed. Analysis utilized the concepts of Rhetorical and Critical Discursive Social Psychology, indicating that human rights are flexibly used in arguments oriented to the expansion, the limitation, or the opposition to self-defined gender identity. Varied representations of human rights’ content and boundaries and different constructions of agency concerning their enactment are identified. Although representations of human rights as universal are oriented to the inclusion of LGBTQI+ community, other liberal arguments obscure anti-LGBTQI+ social actors’ accountability. Human rights are also depicted as threatening Westernizing tools. The rhetorical functions of these constructions and their potential implications for queer claims and politics are discussed.

Deployments of Multiracial Masculinity and Anti-Black Violence: The Racial Framings of Barack Obama, George Zimmerman, and Daunte Wright

In this article, I examine how political and media discourses of multiraciality are deployed to justify guilt and innocence. I trace the deployment of multiraciality to determine who is deserving of life or death in media coverage, political rhetoric, and court records during Obama’s presidency, in George Zimmerman’s 2013 acquittal, and in the 2021 killing of Daunte Wright. I examine the weaponization of discourses of multiracial identities as tools of white supremacy and anti-Blackness. Through such weaponization, the construction of the multiracial man as an index of racial progress and post-racism evident in the Barack Obama era enabled the violence and miscarriages of justice in the killings of Trayvon Martin and Daunte Wright. I consider how transnational and U.S. narratives of multiraciality, joined with anti-Blackness and white supremacy, enabled the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Furthermore, I examine how white womanhood and fears of Black masculinity facilitated the sympathy garnered towards Kim Potter. In considering the killing of Daunte Wright, this paper shows how multiraciality and racial malleability are valuable only when utilized for preserving racial hierarchies.

Individual and organizational identity economics: the case of sustainability

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to introduce identity economics in the individual and organizational level, and highlight its impact on organizational performance, especially when dealing with foundational issues such as sustainability.Design/methodology/approachIdentity, sustainability, and the role of personal values in organizational performance are well researched topics that have been typically addressed on different literature streams. The article draws from this diverse literature to introduce identity effects in individual and organizational levels, and further explore how such elements link to the rising popularity of the sustainability discourse and how they can affect operations in an organization.FindingsThe article highlights the importance of identity effects on organizational operations and performance, especially when dealing with foundational issues such as sustainability perceptions.Originality/valueThe article builds upon the recent developments in the field of identity economics to introduce identity in the sustainability discourse and explore how (mis)alignment between identity values on sustainability and organizational culture can affect organizational operations and individual performance.

Lexical Interference in Oral Speech of Shor-Russian Bilinguals

The article introduces the Shor-Russian lexical interference as a speech phenomenon. It is determined by the peculiarities of the linguistic situation in the region and the nature of discourses where borrowings are recorded. Borrowings are opposed by the presence / absence of a Russian equivalent, the degree of development, etc. They are characterized by the types of discursive conditions that actualize the borrowings in the Russian speech. The study featured recordings of spontaneous oral speech of Shor-Russian bilinguals in the towns of Sheregesh and Tashtagol and in the village of Bolshaya Sueta (Kemerovo Region, 2017–2018). The recording time is 23 hours and encompasses more than 138,380 word tokens. The data were collected by field methods and analyzed with corpus methods, sociolinguistic questionnaires, and linguistic analysis. Interference as a speech phenomenon appeared to be stimulated by special communicative conditions, the imbalance of the language situation being one of them. The Russian language dominates functionally, while the functions of the modern Shor language are limited to intra-family communication, close groups of friends, and a marker of ethnocultural identity. Most borrowings remain a speech phenomenon. Entering the language-system, they are generally assessed as functionally limited, being actualized in the discourses of Shor identity. The ease of systemic-linguistic phonetic and morphological adaptation to the Russian language is determined by the high level of its acquisition in the studied type of bilingualism.

Positioning of female marriage immigrants in South Korea: a multimodal textbook analysis

Abstract This study examines a series of government textbooks used to teach Korean language and culture to spouses of South Korean nationals living in Korea. A multimodal analysis of textbook images and narratives explores how strictly defined gender identity discourses are constructed and circulated through these government textbooks in ways that not only seek to reinforce gender conventions, but also advance a conservative, assimilationist curriculum for these immigrants. The analysis reveals ways in which female marriage immigrants are positioned primarily as housekeepers; how they are subordinately positioned vis-à-vis in-laws and their husbands; and finally, how intercultural miscommunications are presented as the fault only of the immigrants. In this, the burden for intercultural communication and learning is placed solely on the immigrants in the multimodal narratives presented in the textbooks, without reciprocal burden ever placed on the spouse or spouse’s family, or effective ways of negotiating intercultural miscommunications being shared. Images and text work together in multimodal ensembles to craft narratives that position immigrant women in ways that textual or visual analysis alone would not fully capture. Thus, the study argues the use of multimodal analytical approach in examining language textbooks as a way of deconstructing broader discourses and disrupting problematic discourses.

Hierarchies of knowledge about intersectionality in marketing theory and practice

There is scant research regarding intersectionality and epistemic hierarchies in marketing, including connections and disconnections between knowledge about intersectionality produced in marketing scholarship and practice. Thus, we examine how market logics propelled by gendered racial capitalism and the commercialization of identity politics impact the production of knowledge about intersectionality in the marketing discipline and industry. We consider how the notion of “intersectionality” has been conceptualized and obfuscated in marketing scholarship and entwined industry discourse. Consequently, we provide a genealogy of how “intersectionality” has been framed in marketing studies and industry approaches which reflect the entanglements of knowledge production, the politics of representation, and the marketization of social justice. Overall, we contribute to scholarly interventions regarding how intersecting oppressions influence marketing and critical analyses of it, as well as the complex interrelationship between marketing, commercial representation, and discourses of identity, inequality, and structural change.

National Identity in Mid-Nineteenth Century Birmingham

ABSTRACT Most current academic investigations of national identity by Linda Colley and Peter Mandler et al, are substantially based on the experience of London. This article focuses on how national identity was perceived and represented by four individuals in mid-nineteenth-century Birmingham. Birmingham’s significance as an international manufacturing centre; a centre for campaigns for franchise reform and the abolition of slavery; and a location for migration meant that national identity was a matter of great interest. These four individuals were Joseph Sturge, a middle-class radical abolitionist; John Bright, the Liberal MP; George Edmonds, a campaigner from an artisanal background; and George Dawson, an influential preacher. The article draws out similarities and differences in their views by investigating how they saw the nation and who they thought belonged to it. The article moves beyond the London-centric historiography of national identity by assessing national identity discourses in an important provincial town.

Formation of Ideological (Official and Religious) Discourses as Basis for Ryacudu’s Securitization of LGBT Acts in Indonesia 2016 – 2017

Despite its existence in various local traditions, LGBT acts in Indonesia has recently faced notorious condemnation and abuse. This paper explores minister Ryacudu’s discourse formation in removing LGBT issue from normal politics into security sector, and whether such action has been successful in convincing audience that LGBT is indeed a security issue. In doing so, this study utilizes securitization framework to unravel the rationalization of removing LGBT into security sector and how it relates to Indonesian identity discourse. This paper argues that securitization of LGBT acts in Indonesia is an enactment of national and religious identity. LGBT has been re-constructed as a threat to national identity, thus, a societal security threat. This securitization is conducted by Indonesian government, initially started by Minister Ryacudu’s call to reject LGBT, which is then widely echoed among citizens. Statement from Ryacudu is the main speech act, supported by, utilization of religious values and national heteronormative identity as reference values to legitimize extraordinary measures to the so-called ‘LGBT problem’. The ‘extraordinary measures’ taken to ‘protect’ Indonesia’s identity include various sectors from education, communication and media, and commerce. Wide acceptance among citizen suggests that Indonesian government, especially Minister Ryacudu have successfully securitized LGBT issue in Indonesia.

Representational Politics in the Film Series “Asian Americans”: The Contestation of Identity Essentialism

This paper highlights counternarratives of identity essentialism (re)producing representational conflations to normalize the existing system of social hierarchies. Analyzing anti-hegemonic discourses of identity in the film series “Asian Americans”, I propound how anti-essentialist critiques work as a rhetorical vehicle for constructing coalitional possibilities. This essay reinstates the importance of deconstructing binary logics in understanding social and cultural relations regulating Asian/American derogatory representations. Unpacking the invisibility of ideological power in administering representational strategies, this essay employs intersectional lenses to visualize the contradiction of Asian/American politics reclaimed by the dynamic integration of capitalism, transnationalism, imperialist militarism, and racially sexual fetishism. Representational complexity thus becomes a modality of analytic unveiling the presence of power relations in racially gendering Asian/Americans.

Solidifying identity discourse through the politicized monumentation of struggle

AbstractThis article investigates contemporary examples of monumentation and the extent to which they solidify and reproduce a politicized discourse on identities. Focusing predominantly on the representation of refugees and migrants, the article is broken down into four sections, the first of which looks into the challenges of monumentation and the discourse it represents. The second part includes three case studies, each representing a different vestige of the struggle with the discourse propagated by certain monuments. The core of the argument concerns the parameters of social representation of the suffering subject, be it the refugee, the asylum seeker, their mother, or the colonial subject. I propose an adaptation of Fairclough's model of language and power to include monuments as replicas of texts which can be analyzed at word, discursive and social levels.
