A comparison study of spatial and temporal schemes for flow and transport problems in fractured media with large parameter contrasts on small length scales

AbstractIn this work, various high-accuracy numerical schemes for transport problems in fractured media are further developed and compared. Specifically, to capture sharp gradients and abrupt changes in time, schemes with low order of accuracy are not always sufficient. To this end, discontinuous Galerkin up to order two, Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin, and finite differences, are formulated. The resulting schemes are solved with sparse direct numerical solvers. Moreover, time discontinuous Galerkin methods of order one and two are solved monolithically and in a decoupled fashion, respectively, employing finite elements in space on locally refined meshes. Our algorithmic developments are substantiated with one regular fracture network and several further configurations in fractured media with large parameter contrasts on small length scales. Therein, the evaluation of the numerical schemes and implementations focuses on three key aspects, namely accuracy, monotonicity, and computational costs.

A one-dimensional computational model for blood flow in an elastic blood vessel with a rigid catheter.

Strokes are one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Stroke treatment involves removal or dissolution of the obstruction (usually a clot) in the blocked artery by catheter insertion. A computer simulation to systematically plan such patient-specific treatments needs a network of about 105 blood vessels including collaterals. The existing computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solvers are not employed for stroke treatment planning as they are incapable of providing solutions for such big arterial trees in a reasonable amount of time. This work presents a novel one-dimensional mathematical formulation for blood flow modeling in an elastic blood vessel with a centrally placed rigid catheter. The governing equations are first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations, and the hypergeometric function needs to be computed to obtain the characteristic system of these hyperbolic equations. We employed the Discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the hyperbolic system and validated the implementation by comparing it against a well-established 3D CFD solver using idealized vessels and a realistic truncated arterial network. The results showed clinically insignificant differences in steady flow cases, with overall variations between 1D and 3D models remaining below 10%. Additionally, the solver accurately captured wave reflection phenomena at domain discontinuities in unsteady cases. A primary advantage of this model over 3D solvers is its ease in obtaining a discretized geometry of complex vasculatures with multiple arterial branches. Thus, the 1D computational model offers good accuracy and applicability in simulating complex vasculatures, demonstrating promising potential for investigating patient-specific endovascular interventions in strokes.

Error analysis for local discontinuous Galerkin semidiscretization of Richards’ equation

Abstract This paper concerns an error analysis of the space semidiscrete scheme for the Richards’ equation modeling flows in variably saturated porous media. This nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation can degenerate; namely, we consider the case where the time derivative term can vanish, i.e., the fast-diffusion type of degeneracy. We discretize the Richards’ equation by the local discontinuous Galerkin method, which provides high order accuracy and preserves stability. Due to the nonlinearity of the problem, special techniques for numerical analysis of the scheme are required. In particular, we combine two partial error bounds using continuous mathematical induction and derive a priori error estimates with respect to the spatial discretization parameter and the Hölder coefficient of the nonlinear temporal derivative. Finally, the theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments, including cases beyond the assumptions of the theoretical results.

Error analysis for discontinuous Galerkin method for time‐fractional Burgers' equation

The primary goal of this paper is to suggest a fully discrete numerical solution approach for the time‐fractional Burgers' equation. This paper will consider the fractional derivative in the Caputo sense. The time derivative of this equation will be discretized using the L2‐type discretization formula. The spatial variable is approximated by using the nonsymmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method. The proposed method is globally and unconditionally stable. The accuracy of the solution is evaluated using a convergence analysis. Computational experiments further confirm the accuracy and stability of the suggested strategy.

Sparse-grid discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Vlasov–Poisson–Lenard–Bernstein model

Sparse-grid methods have recently gained interest in reducing the computational cost of solving high-dimensional kinetic equations. In this paper, we construct adaptive and hybrid sparse-grid methods for the Vlasov–Poisson–Lenard–Bernstein (VPLB) model. This model has applications to plasma physics and is simulated in two reduced geometries: a 0x3v space homogeneous geometry and a 1x3v slab geometry. We use the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method as a base discretization due to its high-order accuracy and ability to preserve important structural properties of partial differential equations. We utilize a multiwavelet basis expansion to determine the sparse-grid basis and the adaptive mesh criteria. We analyze the proposed sparse-grid methods on a suite of three test problems by computing the savings afforded by sparse-grids in comparison to standard solutions of the DG method. The results are obtained using the adaptive sparse-grid discretization library ASGarD.

A global space–time Trefftz DG scheme for the time-dependent isotropic elastic wave equations

In this paper we are concerned with Trefftz discretizations of the time-dependent linear elastic wave equation in arbitrary space dimensional domains Ω⊂Rd(d∈N). We propose a Trefftz discontinuos Galerkin method, construct Trefftz basis functions and prove that the corresponding approximate solutions possess optimal-order error estimates with respect to the meshwidth. A space–time domain decomposition preconditioner is introduced for the system generated by the proposed variational formula. Besides, we propose the global Trefftz DG method combined with local DG methods to solve the nonhomogeneous model. The numerical results verify the validity of the theoretical results, and show that the resulting approximate solutions possess high accuracy, and the proposed preconditioner is effective.

Fourth-Order Conservative Non-splitting Semi-Lagrangian Hermite WENO Schemes for Kinetic and Fluid Simulations

AbstractWe present fourth-order conservative non-splitting semi-Lagrangian (SL) Hermite essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) schemes for linear transport equations with applications for nonlinear problems including the Vlasov–Poisson system, the guiding center Vlasov model, and the incompressible Euler equations in the vorticity-stream function formulation. The proposed SL HWENO schemes combine a weak formulation of the characteristic Galerkin method with two newly constructed HWENO reconstruction methods. The new HWENO reconstructions are meticulously designed to strike a delicate balance between curbing numerical oscillation and introducing excessive dissipation. Mass conservation naturally holds due to the weak formulation of the semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin method and the design of the HWENO reconstructions. We apply a positivity-preserving limiter to maintain the positivity of numerical solutions when needed. Abundant benchmark tests are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SL HWENO schemes.

A nodal discontinuous Galerkin method for wave propagation in coupled acoustic–elastic media

AbstractThe accurate numerical solution at an acoustic–elastic interface is important for offshore exploration. The solution requires careful implementation for the acoustic–elastic boundary conditions. In this work, we leverage a nodal discontinuous Galerkin method, in which the unstructured uniform triangular meshes are used for the model meshing and an explicit upwind numerical flux derived from the Riemann problem is adopted to handle the boundary conditions at the acoustic–elastic interface. Several numerical results are provided to assess the accuracy and convergence properties of this method. The convergence analysis is carried out in the coupled model with a flat interface, and the accuracy of the proposed method is verified in the curved interface coupled model. Finally, a more complex model with a salt dome, inspired by real geophysical applications, is carried out in this study. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed nodal discontinuous Galerkin method is effective and accurate for dealing with the coupled acoustic–elastic media with complex geometries.

Port-Hamiltonian discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods

Abstract A port-Hamiltonian (pH) system formulation is a geometrical notion used to formulate conservation laws for various physical systems. The distributed parameter port-Hamiltonian formulation models infinite dimensional Hamiltonian dynamical systems that have a nonzero energy flow through the boundaries. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of pH-systems. Linking DG methods with pH-systems gives rise to compatible structure preserving semidiscrete finite element discretizations along with flexibility in terms of geometry and function spaces of the variables involved. Moreover, the port-Hamiltonian formulation makes boundary ports explicit, which makes the choice of structure and power preserving numerical fluxes easier. We state the Discontinuous Finite Element Stokes–Dirac structure with a power preserving coupling between elements, which provides the mathematical framework for a large class of pH discontinuous Galerkin discretizations. We also provide an a priori error analysis for the port-Hamiltonian discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method (pH-DGFEM). The port-Hamiltonian discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is demonstrated for the scalar wave equation showing optimal rates of convergence.

Quadratic Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods for the Unilateral Contact Problem

Abstract In this article, we employ discontinuous Galerkin methods for the finite element approximation of the frictionless unilateral contact problem using quadratic finite elements over simplicial triangulation. We first develop a posteriori error estimates in the energy norm wherein, the reliability and efficiency of the proposed a posteriori error estimator is addressed. The suitable construction of the discrete Lagrange multiplier 𝝀 𝒉 {\boldsymbol{\lambda_{h}}} and some intermediate operators play a key role in developing a posteriori error analysis. Further, we establish an optimal a priori error estimates under the appropriate regularity assumption on the exact solution 𝒖 {\boldsymbol{u}} . Numerical results presented on uniform and adaptive meshes illustrate and confirm the theoretical findings.

Numerical methods for reinterpreted discrete fracture models with random inputs

This paper investigates the impact of uncertainty on the reinterpreted discrete fracture model (RDFM) for flow in porous media featuring fractures and barriers. The stochastic RDMF is formulated by parameterizing the uncertainty in the permeability, as well as the width of the fracture and barrier networks as random variables. To discretize these random variable, we adopt a stochastic collocation method based on a special choice of nodes. This collocation scheme offers optimal accuracy and easy implementation. The resulting collocation scheme is then combined with the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method to accommodate the hybrid-dimensional Darcy’s law and the nature of the pressure/flux discontinuity. Additionally, a slope limiter is utilized to enhance stability. Numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate the accuracy and stability of the proposed scheme.

Adaptive space-time model order reduction with dual-weighted residual (MORe DWR) error control for poroelasticity

In this work, the space-time MORe DWR (Model Order Reduction with Dual-Weighted Residual error estimates) framework is extended and further developed for single-phase flow problems in porous media. Specifically, our problem statement is the Biot system which consists of vector-valued displacements (geomechanics) coupled to a Darcy flow pressure equation. The MORe DWR method introduces a goal-oriented adaptive incremental proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) based-reduced-order model (ROM). The error in the reduced goal functional is estimated during the simulation, and the POD basis is enriched on-the-fly if the estimate exceeds a given threshold. This results in a reduction of the total number of full-order-model solves for the simulation of the porous medium, a robust estimation of the quantity of interest and well-suited reduced bases for the problem at hand. We apply a space-time Galerkin discretization with Taylor-Hood elements in space and a discontinuous Galerkin method with piecewise constant functions in time. The latter is well-known to be similar to the backward Euler scheme. We demonstrate the efficiency of our method on the well-known two-dimensional Mandel benchmark and a three-dimensional footing problem.

Shock-capturing PID controller for high-order methods with data-driven gain optimization

We present a novel shock-capturing strategy for high-order methods including discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with data-driven gain optimization. Inspired by the classical control theory, we utilize a proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller for capturing shock waves with monotonic subcell distributions. The proposed closed-loop control system for shock-capturing, named shock-capturing PID controller (SPID), consists of two key elements: error estimation based on the multi-dimensional limiting strategies (hMLP and hMLP_BD) and shock stabilization using the Laplacian artificial viscosity (LAV). The two elements are combined in a complementary manner to maximize the advantages of limiting strategy and artificial viscosity while overcoming each weakness. First, based on the multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP) condition and the troubled-boundary detector, the estimated error gives a signal to the SPID how much flow variables stray out of monotonic shock profiles. Second, the SPID estimates the amount of artificial viscosity to stabilize the target shock wave and superimposes numerical diffusion to the governing equations in the form of LAV. Each control action of the SPID (i.e., proportional, integral, and derivative) has a distinct role in capturing and stabilizing shock waves. The proportional action determines a minimal amount of background artificial viscosity. The integral action reinforces a shock-stabilizing numerical diffusion where the artificial viscosity by the proportional action alone is insufficient. The derivative action damps out sudden rises of error and spurious oscillations. The SPID incorporates the gain parameters that regulate the impact of each control action, and each gain parameter is determined via a surrogate-based optimization approach utilizing artificial neural networks (ANN). The SPID with the data-driven gain parameters is verified and validated by conducting extensive numerical tests and by comparing the results to other shock-capturing methods (hMLP, hMLP_BD, and Laplacian artificial viscosity). The numerical results demonstrate the excellent performance of SPID in terms of capturing shock waves and stabilizing shock-induced oscillations. Moreover, the SPID successfully preserves unsteady turbulent eddies for large-eddy simulations (LES) of subsonic and supersonic flows and improves convergence characteristics of steady transonic/supersonic flows.
