The study identifies the proposals regarding dental teaching in Brazil put forward in documents dating from the 1960s, to wit, the annals of the three Paho-sponsored seminars on dental teaching and a WHO Expert Committee report on dental hygiene. It can be noted that later recommendations about changes to the field in Brazil reveal tension between different actors and conceptions, not always understood by the area's professionals. It is concluded that recommendations aimed at innovations in dental teaching trace their development to this time and that most can be found in the Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais [National Syllabus Guidelines] for undergraduate courses in dentistry.
