Synthesis and Characterization of UiO-66-NH2 Metal–Organic Framework Cotton Composite Textiles

This work details the development of a cotton fabric functionalized with UiO-66-NH2 metal–organic framework (MOF). The materials were made by seeding the growth of the MOF on the cotton by first bonding zirconium (Zr) to the surface of the fabric utilizing cyanuric chloride modified with a thiol. After seeding the fabrics with Zr, UiO-66-NH2 was grown on the fabric using a hydrothermal method. Several different routes of attaching Zr to cyanuric chloride were examined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data are consistent with UiO-66-NH2, and the fabrics have surface areas between 45 and 125 m2/g depending on the synthetic conditions used to produce the materials. The functionalized cotton reacts with dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP), a chemical nerve agent simulant, as monitored by UV–vis spectroscopy. Fast and Sustained Degradation of Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants Using Flexible Self-Supported Metal-Organic Framework Filters.

Self-detoxification filters against lethal chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are highly desirable for the protection of human beings and the environment. In this report, flexible self-supported filters of a series of Zr(IV)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) including UiO-66, UiO-67, and UiO-66-NH2 were successfully prepared and exhibited fast and sustained degradation of CWA simulants. A half-life as short as 2.4 min was obtained for the catalytic hydrolysis of dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate, and the percent conversion remained above 90% over a long-term exposure of 120 min, well exceeding those of the previously reported composite MOF filters and the corresponding MOF powders. The outstanding detoxification performance of the self-supported fibrous filter comes from the exceptionally high surface area, excellent pore accessibility, and hierarchical structure from the nano- to macroscale. This work demonstrates, for the first time, MOF-only filters as efficient self-detoxification media, which will offer new opportunities for the design and fabrication of functional materials for toxic chemical protection.

Synthesis of a Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework with Spirobifluorenetetrabenzoic Acid for the Effective Removal of Nerve Agent Simulants.

A new microporous Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) containing 4,4',4″,4‴-(9,9'-spirobi[fluorene]-2,2',7,7'-tetrayl)tetrabenzoic acid (Spirof-MOF) was synthesized, characterized, and size-controlled for the adsorption and decomposition of a nerve agent simulant, dimethyl 4-nitrophenylphosphate (DMNP). Spirof-MOF showed a hydrolysis half-life (t1/2) of 7.5 min to DMNP, which was confirmed by using in situ 31P NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, size-controlled Spirof-MOFb (∼1 μm) exhibited a half-life of 1.8 min and 99% removal within 18 min for DMNP. The results show that Spirof-MOF is a new active material in removing nerve agent simulants by adsorption and hydrolytic decomposition.

Microwave-assisted activation and modulator removal in zirconium MOFs for buffer-free CWA hydrolysis.

A novel, facile and efficient method was developed for the activation of acetic acid modulated zirconium MOFs. The protocol involves briefly heating the material in water using microwave irradiation. MOF-808, DUT-84 and UiO-66 were all activated in this manner to remove the modulator and organic solvent from the framework post synthesis, with retention of MOF integrity post activation. The degree of activation was characterised by the use of TGA and NMR. The catalytic activity of the activated MOFs and their non-activated counterparts was investigated for chemical warfare agent (CWA) hydrolysis. Upon activation, an increase in the rate of hydrolysis was observed in the degradation of CWA simulant dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP). MOF-808 and DUT-84 were also screened as catalysts for the hydrolysis of the V-series agent VM, with remarkable half-lives obtained for MOF-808 in the absence of any buffers. Currently employed MOF activation procedures involve the use of additional organic solvents post synthesis; we believe this method to be ideally efficacious for the organic desolvation of zirconium MOFs and removing modulator additives.

Propanolysis of Methyl Paraoxon in the Presence of Aluminum-Titanate-Supported Erbium Oxide

Er2O3/Al2TiO5 and Al2TiO5 were evaluated as catalysts for the propanolysis of the organophosphate pesticide dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (methyl paraoxon). The solid catalysts were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), N2 physisorption (BET and BJH methods), and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Physical–chemical characterizations revealed that the erbium content is 11.7% w/w in the novel solid and results in improved catalyst performance when compared with Al2TiO5, with textural properties favorable for methyl paraoxon diffusion in agglomerates composed of polydisperse spherical nanoparticles. Kinetic measurements at 80 °C show that the Er2O3/Al2TiO5 catalyst promotes a catalytic effect of at least 7 × 105-fold when compared with the first-order rate constant of the spontaneous propanolysis of methyl paraoxon.

Detoxification of Chemical Warfare Agents Using a Zr6 -Based Metal-Organic Framework/Polymer Mixture.

Owing to their high surface area, periodic distribution of metal sites, and water stability, zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr6 -MOFs) have shown promising activity for the hydrolysis of nerve agents GD and VX, as well as the simulant, dimethyl 4-nitrophenylphosphate (DMNP), in buffered solutions. A hurdle to using MOFs for this application is the current need for a buffer solution. Here the destruction of the simulant DMNP, as well as the chemical warfare agents (GD and VX) through hydrolysis using a MOF catalyst mixed with a non-volatile, water-insoluble, heterogeneous buffer is reported. The hydrolysis of the simulant and nerve agents in the presence of the heterogeneous buffer was fast and effective.

Dual-Function Metal-Organic Framework as a Versatile Catalyst for Detoxifying Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants.

The nanocrystals of a porphyrin-based zirconium(IV) metal-organic framework (MOF) are used as a dual-function catalyst for the simultaneous detoxification of two chemical warfare agent simulants at room temperature. Simulants of nerve agent (such as GD, VX) and mustard gas, dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate and 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, have been hydrolyzed and oxidized, respectively, to nontoxic products via a pair of pathways catalyzed by the same MOF. Phosphotriesterase-like activity of the Zr6-containing node combined with photoactivity of the porphyrin linker gives rise to a versatile MOF catalyst. In addition, bringing the MOF crystals down to the nanoregime leads to acceleration of the catalysis.

Leaving Group Assistance in the La3+-Catalyzed Cleavage of Dimethyl (o-Methoxycarbonyl)aryl Phosphate Triesters in Methanol

The catalytic methanolysis of a series of dimethyl aryl phosphate triesters where the aryl groups contain an o-methoxycarbonyl (o-CO2Me) substituent (4a-i) was studied at 25 degrees C in methanol containing La3+ at various concentrations and (s)(s)pH. Determination of the second-order rate constant for La3+(2)-catalyzed cleavage of substrate 4a (dimethyl (o-methoxycarbonyl)phenyl phosphate) as a function of (s)(s)pH was assessed in terms of a speciation diagram that showed that the process was catalyzed by La3+(2)(-OCH3)x dimers, where x = 1-5, that exhibit only a 5-fold difference in activity between all the species. The second-order catalytic rate constants (k2(La)) for the catalyzed methanolysis of 4a-i at (s)(s)pH 8.7 fit a Brønsted relationship of log k2(La) = (-0.82 +/- 0.11)(s)(s)pKa(lg) + (11.61 +/- 1.48), where the gradient is shallower than that determined for a series of dimethyl aryl phosphates that do not contain the o-CO2Me substituent, log k2(La) = (-1.25 +/- 0.06)(s)(s)pKa(lg) + (16.23 +/- 0.75). Two main observations are that (1) the o-CO2Me group preferentially accelerates the cleavage of the phosphate triesters with poor leaving groups relative to those with good leaving groups and (2) it provides an increase in cleavage rate relative to those of comparable substrates that do not have that functional group, e.g., k2(La)(dimethyl o-(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl phosphate)/k2(La)(dimethyl phenyl phosphate) = 60. Activation parameters for the La3+(2)-catalyzed methanolysis of 4a and dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate show respective DeltaH(double dagger) (DeltaS(double dagger)) values of 3.3 kcal/mol (-47 cal/mol x K) and 0.7 kcal/mol (-46.5 cal/mol x K). The data are analyzed in terms of a concerted reaction where the catalytic complex (La3+(2)(-OCH3)(x-1)) binds to the three components of a rather loose transition state composed of a nucleophile CH3O-, a nucleofuge -OAr, and a central (RO)2P(2+)-O(-) in a way that provides leaving group assistance to the departing aryloxy group.

Theoretical Studies of the Hydroxide-Catalyzed P−O Cleavage Reactions of Neutral Phosphate Triesters and Diesters in Aqueous Solution: Examination of the Changes Induced by H/Me Substitution

DFT calculations and dielectric continuum methods have been employed to map out the lowest activation free-energy profiles for the alkaline hydrolysis of representative phosphate triesters and diesters, including trimethyl phosphate (TMP), dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNPP), dimethyl hydrogen phosphate (DMHP), and the dimethyl phosphate anion (DMP-). The reliability of the calculations is supported by the excellent agreement observed between the calculated and the experimentally determined activation enthalpies for phosphate triesters with poor (TMP) and good (DMNPP) leaving groups. The results obtained for the OH- + DMHP and OH- + DMP- reactions are also consistent with all the available experimental information concerning the hydrolysis reaction of dimethyl phosphate anion at pH > 5. By performing geometry optimizations in the dielectric field (epsilon = 78.39), we found that OH- can attack the phosphorus atom of DMHP without capturing its proton only if the O-H bond of DMHP is oriented opposite the attacking OH- group. In these conditions, the rate for OH- attack on DMHP was found to be approximately 10(3)-fold faster than that for OH- attack on TMP. The calculated rate acceleration induced by the phosphoryl proton corresponds to the maximum rate effect expected from kinetic studies. Overall, our calculations performed on the dimethyl phosphate ester predict that, contrary to what is generally observed for RNA and aryl phosphodiesters, the water-promoted P-O cleavage reaction of DNA should dominate the base-catalyzed reaction at pH 7. These results are suggestive that nucleases may be less proficient as catalysts than has recently been suspected.

Value of ED50 testing in assessing hazards of acute poisoning by carbamates and organophosphates.

It is shown from the kinetics of inhibition of cholinesterase by <i>N</i>-methylcarbamates and organophosphates that the LD₅₀ dose is likely to be a much greater multiple of the dose causing signs of poisoning in 50% of the animals (the ED₅₀) for the carbamates than for the organophosphates. The expected difference was demonstrated by a comparison of the LD₅₀s and ED₅₀s, intravenous and intramuscular, of five carbamates (2-<i>iso</i>propoxyphenyl <i>N</i>-methylcarbamate, 3-<i>iso</i>propylphenyl <i>N</i>-methylcarbamate, 6-chloro-3,4-xylyl <i>N</i>-methylcarbamate, 3,4,5-trimethylphenyl <i>N</i>-methylcarbamate, and 3-methyl-5-<i>iso</i>propylphenyl <i>N</i>-methylcarbamate) and two organophosphorus compounds (diethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate and dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate). The slightest evoked tremor was chosen as the most reliable sign of poisoning from which to estimate the ED₅₀ values. Carbamates gave much greater LD₅₀/ED₅₀ ratios than organophosphorus compounds. It is likely that occupational exposure to carbamates will produce incapacitating symptoms at doses well below lethal levels.
