Viability of sustainable logistics practices enabling circular economy: A system dynamics approach

AbstractTransitioning toward a circular economy (CE) offers a promising avenue for achieving sustainable logistics systems. Nevertheless, the assessment of sustainable logistics practices (SLPs) in the CE context presents challenges due to the inherent dynamism and complexity of logistics systems. This study aims to assess SLPs toward a CE by employing a system dynamics analysis. Specifically, we focus on four sustainability practices: green purchasing (GP), eco‐design (ED), reverse logistics (RL), and green transportation (GT). These practices are assessed in terms of economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability performance using a hypothetical case study centered on pallet manufacturing and distribution system. The results revealed that the RL practice yields improved economic and social performance, while GT enhances environmental performance more significantly when compared to the other three practices. Our analysis shows RL as a promising practice that enhances overall sustainability performance. This model serves as a valuable tool for decision‐makers aiding them in the prioritization of sustainability practices based on their performance within various CE strategies.

Mapping the link between CSR and sustainability performance through GHRM practices in hotel industry

This study investigated the mediating role between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability performance. This is the first study which has focused specifically on mediating role of green human resource management (HRM) between CSR and sustainability performance dimensions which is remained unanswered in the literature. Survey data from the 139 hotels in Pakistan was collected and SmartPLS was applied for structural equation modeling. Findings reveal that CSR is positively and significantly related with green HRM practices. In addition, green HRM practices mediate the relationship between CSR and environmental and social dimensions of sustainability performance. Contradictory to the expectation, green HRM was found insignificant mediator between CSR and economic sustainability performance. The findings demonstrate various theoretical and managerial implications. The study offers novelty by unfolding the unobserved mediating relationship of green HRM between CSR and dimensions of sustainability performance. The study also contributes to the literature of resource-based view (RBV) theory which depicts that CSR and green HRM are the intangible resources for the hotels in achieving sustainable performance and competitive advantage. The study will help the policy makers and managers by adopting theoretical framework for their cleaner production capabilities.

The Role of Community Engagement and Entrepreneurship in the Sustainability Performance of Social Ventures in South Korea

Social ventures, hybrid enterprises pursuing for-profit business and mission-driven nonprofit goals, have rapidly grown in South Korea owing to local governments’ proactive policies and support. Despite extensive government support, community-based social ventures often fail to sustain themselves due to lacking experience, strategies, and social networks. Informed by stakeholder theory, this study investigates the relationships between social venture strategies and the core dimensions of government-funded, community-based social enterprises’ sustainability performance (economic, human resources management, and social performance). We circulated our online survey among the employees of community-based social start-ups funded by local governments in South Korea. In total, 210 participants completed the survey. The results of structural equation modelling demonstrated that venture entrepreneurship and community engagement are positively associated with all dimensions of sustainability performance, subsequently improving work satisfaction. As community-based social ventures involve diverse stakeholders, organizational members should negotiate complementary or competing values in a holistic picture of all involved parties (e.g., funders, employees, and residents) to pursue sustainability efforts.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of corporate governance on the performance of triple bottom line sustainability. Corporate governance is embodied in the number of Directors, the percentage of female Directors, expertise and frequency of meetings. The sustainability performance is proxied by the dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental and social. The sample of this research are companies listed on the IDX 2020-2021 indexed LQ 45. Sampling was based on purposive random sampling which resulted in 52 data. Hypothesis testing was done by multivariate regression. Agency theory and Stakeholder theory are used as the theoretical basis for discussion. The test results that the greater the number of Directors has a negative effect on the economic, environmental and social performance. The large percentage of the number of female Directors has a positive effect on social performance, while the effect of the frequency of Directors' meetings has a positive effect on economic and environmental performance. The expertise of the Board of Directors has absolutely no effect on all dimensions of sustainability performance.

Contribution of carbon footprint research towards the triple bottom line of sustainability.

Carbon footprint (CF) research has received increasing attention in recent years, as evidenced by a rise in publications and citations, reflecting a growing concern for the environmental impact of human activities. However, the alignment of this scientific literature with the three dimensions of sustainability performance provided by the TBL paradigm (people, planet, and profit) has received limited attention. This study addresses this research gap by undertaking a large-scale bibliometric analysis of 9032 Web of Science (WoS) publications from 1992 to 2020. At the macro (journals) and micro (papers) levels, a methodology approach to classify research publications according to TBL dimensions was designed. The results indicate that the output and impact of CF research are balanced with respect to the environmental (planet) and economic (prosperity/profit) dimensions, while the social impact is balanced with respect to the people+profit dimensions. Other than that, "Affordable and Clean Energy" (3761 publications) and "Climate Action" (3091 publications) are the most frequently represented (and interconnected) objectives. The results obtained contribute to a greater understanding of the contribution of CF research to the attainment of the SDGs.

Achieving business excellence through sustainable supply chain management

This paper presents a comprehensive research framework for achieving business excellence through sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), based on an extensive review of the literature examining the impact of SSCM practices on sustainability performance and their associated metrics. The study investigates the influence of individual SSCM practices that address economic, environmental, or social aspects on various dimensions of sustainability performance. A two-stage meta-analysis was performed, encompassing 97 empirical studies on SSCM published between 2010 and 2020. In the first stage, the relationship between SSCM practices and sustainability performance at an aggregate level was tested, alongside an examination of potential moderating factors. The second stage assessed the relationships between SSCM practices and sustainability performance at the dimensional level, paying particular attention to the presence of moderating factors in these relationships. The findings reveal a positive impact of SSCM practices on overall sustainability performance and on each dimensional level, with one exception being the link between economic SSCM practices and environmental sustainability performance. Moreover, the results confirm the presence of moderating factors in all relationships between SSCM practices and sustainability performance. The paper concludes by discussing the theoretical and practical implications of these findings for the SSCM domain.

The Efficiency of Sustainability Engagement Reported by Banks in Poland, Croatia and Romania

Abstract Purpose This study aims to verify the efficiency of economic, organisational, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability performance. Methodology Disclosure analysis and 2-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) examining the efficiency of sustainability engagement of listed banks in Poland, Croatia, and Romania disclosed in the annual and CSR/sustainability reports for 2015–2018. Findings There are apparent differences between the efficiency of sustainability engagement in the banking sectors of the three countries examined in the study. Banking sectors in all these countries are on different stages of their paths to value creation via the efficiency of sustainability engagement. Practical implications The results of this study may help compare sustainability engagement and understanding of the further directions of sustainable development in the banking sector in both the analysed and other countries, as well as in other institutions from other sectors. These results may be important for the decision-makers in determining the actions focused on improving efficiency on the way to value creation. Originality/value Since only a limited number of studies examine the efficiency of sustainability engagement, especially in CEE countries, little is known about value creation, understood as the efficient use of the resources and activities concerning sustainability. This paper contributes to filling in this gap. It also proposes an alternative approach, analysing the relationship between sustainability engagement and value creation based on efficiency rather than on the direct impact on financial results giving ambiguous results. This approach may be extended to different sectors and other countries.

Does service-oriented manufacturing affect the sustainability performance of Chinese green manufacturing firms: an integrated study including empirical analysis and agent-based simulation

PurposeThere are two purposes in this paper. The first one is to explore the impact mechanisms and paths of service-oriented manufacturing (SOM) on the sustainability performance of green manufacturing firms and to pay particular attention to the mediating role of enterprise costs in the relationship between the two. The second one is to reveal the dynamic process and laws of SOM influencing on the sustainability performance of green manufacturing enterprises.Design/methodology/approachThis paper employs a combination of dynamic and static research from two aspects. On the one hand, based on 495 green manufacturing firms in China, the authors verify the SEM of SOM, enterprise cost and sustainability performance of green manufacturing firms through empirical research, analyze the path relationship and mediation effect, and demonstrate its complex impact mechanism. On the other hand, the authors use agent-based modeling and simulation to reveal the dynamic influence of SOM on the sustainability performance of green manufacturing enterprises and explore its dynamic laws and future development trends.FindingsThe study results indicate that (1) SOM has a direct positive effect on firm sustainability performance. (2) Reducing firm costs has a positive effect on firm sustainability performance, and firm costs play a partial mediating role in the mechanism by which SOM influences firm sustainability performance. (3) The dynamic impact of SOM on sustainability performance increases significantly over time. (4) Significant firm heterogeneity exists in the process by which SOM improves sustainability performance. (5) There are differences in the promotion of SOM for economic performance, environmental performance and social performance.Originality/valueThis paper makes two main contributions. First, compared with previous research on sustainability performance focusing on a certain dimension, this paper organically integrates the three dimensions of sustainability performance, regards them as a whole and considers the paths to improve sustainability performance. Second, this paper focuses on the complex relationship among SOM, enterprise costs and sustainability performance and reveals different sustainability performance improvement paths and dynamic impact processes, thereby expanding and deepening previous research on sustainability on the subject. These contributions lead to a better understanding of the driving forces and realization path for green manufacturing firms' sustainability performance from an integrated static and dynamic perspective.

Evaluating Industry 4.0 technology and sustainable development goals – a social perspective

Organisations are having difficulty in determining and integrating Industry 4.0 technologies (I4.0T) to improve social dimensions of sustainable performance. We address this issue by showing how to identify the impact degree and path of I4.0T using the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs). First, we identify the SDGs associated with I4.0 and establish an evaluation framework. Second, we introduce an evaluation method that integrates hesitant fuzzy sets, rough sets, decision-making, trial evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and interpretative structural modelling methods to identify the impact degree and path of I4.0T on SDGs. Third, we confirm the effectiveness of our framework and method using secondary case data from World Economic Forum reports. The case results show that I4.0T have varying direct and indirect influences on SDGs. Policy makers should consider that ‘Big Data and Analytics’ and ‘Cloud Computing’ are central I4.0T that link other technologies and SDGs. The prioritisation of I4.0T can lead to contributions to addressing ‘Responsible consumption and production’ and indirectly improve SDGs. The findings set an initial stage to help sequence investment in various technologies depending on SDGs. We identify sequential paths that can aid in planning for and investing in adopting I4.0T to better achieve SDGs.

Protected Areas and Tourism Resources: Toward Sustainable Management

The protection of natural spaces is a practice that is widely used by governments or nongovernmental organizations seeking to preserve the scenic beauty of landscapes and their natural resources in spaces that stand out for their natural and cultural value and have not been heavily impacted by human activity. Proper tourism management of these spaces can promote the economic, social, and environmental development of a territory and its local communities. The objective of this paper is to examine the role of resources in the performance of protected area tourism destinations from a sustainability perspective. The information provided by the managers of 102 protected spaces in Spain (national parks, nature parks, and biosphere reserves) is analyzed. The results provide relevant information about managing resources to strengthen the sustainable performance of these spaces. The findings indicate that different types of resources affect different dimensions of sustainable performance; for instance, natural resources affect the local quality of life and the area’s sustainability, certain created resources can unite and foster local communities and support environmental sustainability, and some supporting resources can attract tourists.

Sustainability and Quality Management in Healthcare During COVID-19

This study aims to examine the relationships between healthcare organizations’ sustainability performance and 1) green sustainability practices, 2) organizational culture, and 3) quality management practices. We proposed a conceptual model of the relationships and formulated three hypotheses. The findings showed that green initiatives and quality management practices affect healthcare organizations’ sustainability performance, specifically social and environmental performance. The findings did not support the contribution role of organizational culture on sustainability performance. This study provides important strategic guidance for healthcare professionals who work to balance the implementation of corporate green practices and the triple bottom line dimensions of sustainability performance. The results showed that positive sustainability outcomes can be achieved when healthcare organizations commit to environmental issues and strategically invest in cost-efficient and eco-friendly initiatives.

Sustain or perish: can environmental supply chain strategies predict sustainable performance of manufacturing firms? A third world nation's perspective

PurposeDrawing on the natural resource-based view (NRBV) and dynamic capability perspectives, the current study investigates the extent to which environmental supply chain strategies (ESCSs) predict the dimensions of sustainable performance of manufacturing firms.Design/methodology/approachIn a cross-sectional survey, data were drawn from eight (8) listed manufacturing firms in Ghana: Aluworks Ltd, Unilever Ghana Plc, Fan Milk Limited, Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited, Cocoa Processing Company, Dannex Ayrton Starwin Plc, Benso Oil Palm Plantation Ltd and Samba Foods Ltd. The data from 396 respondents were analysed with partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) approach to test the research hypotheses.FindingsThe study revealed that environmental, social and economic sustainability performance reporting indicators were positively and significantly predicted by ESCSs of manufacturing firms in an emerging economy.Practical implicationsIn essence, the results provide broad support to the assertion that sustaining companies over several generations largely depends on understanding and implementing proactive green strategies or otherwise perish.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the few studies that investigate ESCSs and sustainability performance issues in emerging economies, like Ghana, where sustainability is on the verge of gaining momentum.

Digital transformation and sustainable performance: The moderating role of market turbulence

As digital technologies disrupt one sector after another, many companies are actively embracing digital transformation. However, the relationship between digital transformation and sustainable performance remains unclear. To fill this gap, based on an integrated perspective of dynamic capability and organizational inertia, this study examines the curvilinear relationships between digital transformation and economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable performance. Survey data from 223 Chinese companies articulate that although digital transformation fosters economic performance at an accelerating rate, it depicts an inverse U-shaped relationship with environmental performance. More interestingly, the accelerating rate of digital transformation on economic performance is quicker under low market turbulence. In contrast, when market turbulence is high, higher digital transformation is associated with worse environmental performance. This study contributes to the literature by providing new theoretical explanations for the inconsistent relationship between digital transformation and sustainable performance. This study also assists companies in re-evaluating their digital strategies.

Effects of control mechanisms on supply chain resilience and sustainability performance

Supply chain resilience (SCRES) plays an important role in dealing with disruptions in a highly turbulent business environment and has received a fair amount of attention from industry and academia. This study explores the relationships among control mechanisms (process, social, and outcome control), SCRES (proactive and reactive resilience), and sustainability performance (economic, environmental, and social performance). Structural equation modeling is used to analyze data collected from 322 Chinese manufacturing firms. This study finds that process control and social control have a positive impact on the two dimensions of SCRES, while outcome control has no significant impact on SCRES. Proactive and reactive resilience both have a significant positive impact on the three dimensions of sustainability performance. The results deepen the understanding of the enablers and performance of SCRES. They also provide managerial insights into how to use control mechanisms to build SCRES capability for sustainable development. JEL Classification: M1

Exploring relationship between sustainability and firm performance in travel and tourism industry: a global evidence

PurposeThe study aims to investigate the relationship between aggregate and individual dimensions of sustainability and financial and stock market performances of the firms in the travel and tourism industry (TTI) across different geographies.Design/methodology/approachThe sample under study consists of 146 firms belonging to TTI that have consistently obtained environmental, social and governance (ESG) rating over the period 2011–2017 as a part of Thomson Reuters Asset 4 ESG database. An empirical multivariate panel data model is developed to analyse the impact of sustainability (ESG) on firm profitability and market value within three tourism-related industries (transportation, hotel and leisure).FindingsThe study extends the existing literature by investigating the impact of each of the vital dimensions of sustainability performance – ESG – and examines how each dimension would affect financial performance and market value among firms within three tourism-related industries (transportation, hotel and leisure). Among the three tourism industries, hotel industry is observed to have the highest ESG compliance, followed by the transportation industry. Based on the agency and stakeholder theory, the authors hypothesized all ESG components to have significant positive effect on the financial and stock market performance; however, the results reveal that each dimension has different impact on financial performance and market value of firms in the tourism industry.Research limitations/implicationsThe study could help firms in the travel and tourism industries to understand which of the dimension of ESG activities is significantly important for their financial and stock market performance.Originality/valueThe unique contribution of this study is that it considers wider definition of the term “Sustainability” and examines the relationship between financial and stock market performances of the firms and each component of ESG. This is one of the few studies at the global level that provides much needed evidence in the area of sustainability performance by the travel and tourism firms.

The impact of country of origin and operation on sustainability practices and performance

This study aims to explore and test two hypotheses on the effects of country of origin and operation on the relationships between 1) stakeholder pressures and the adoption of internal and external sustainability practices, and 2) sustainability practices and environmental as well as social dimensions of sustainability performance. These hypotheses are tested through the Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM) using data from the 6th International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS-VI) conducted in manufacturing assembly plants in 22 countries around the globe. The results show that country of origin and operation do not moderate the relationship between stakeholder pressures and the adoption of sustainability practices, while they have a moderating effect on the relationship between sustainability practices and performance. Studies that investigate the associations between stakeholder pressures, the adoption of sustainability practices and performance are relatively scarce and not quite conclusive. Several scholars have called for studies on the role of contextual variables. The country context in which a firm is embedded is important for understanding firms’ behavior, yet very often neglected. This paper aims to reduce this void. This research also provides managerial insight into the effects of sustainability practices on sustainability performance.

Sustainable manufacturing practices and performance of the Nigerian table water industry: a structural equation modeling approach

PurposeThis study empirically examined and investigated the relationship between sustainable manufacturing practices (SMPs) and performance of table water industry (TWI) in Nigeria.Design/methodology/approachCross-sectional survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of this study covers all the registered table water firms in Delta and Edo states by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Convenience sampling, a nonprobability sampling method, was used in administering the questionnaire to selected table water firms in the two states used for the study. The sample can be considered as experimental group used for the research and analysis. Data collected through questionnaire administration were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used in estimating the research models, through the use of Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS version 24) software.FindingsThe study found that SMPs are adopted by table water firms registered by NAFDAC. It was also found that sustainable packaging and waste management significantly influence the different dimensions of sustainable performance of table water firms.Practical implicationsThe study recommends that table water producers should ensure they consistently adhere to NAFDAC standards after product registration and certification to make the products safe for consumption. Also, NAFDAC should promote a regulatory environment with appropriate incentives to table water firms that consistently comply with stipulated regulations that can promote the sustainability of the environment while any table water firms found engaging in unwholesome activities that can undermine the health status of consumers should be severely sanctioned.Originality/valueThe study provides a comprehensive analysis of sustainability practices in the Nigerian TWI by examining four manufacturing practices and how they impact on sustainability performance of the industry. The study will help to reinforce the need for stakeholders in the TWI to be more environmentally conscious.

ASSESSING SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING PRACTICES AND SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE AMONG OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY IN IRAQ

The companies' interest in the level of their sustainable manufacturing practices (SMPs) has become necessary. This is because of its role in improving and balancing dimensions of sustainability performance (SP) which includes environmental sustainability (EnS), social sustainability (SoS) and economic sustainability (EcS). Therefore, the objective of the present study is the investigate about the extent of SMPs and SP to encourage the oil and gas industry (O&GI) in the context of Iraq to obtain a balance in the dimensions of SP, i.e. EcS, EnS and SoS. The data collected from 80 companies were analysed using descriptive statistics method by using SPSS version 25. The results revealed that the extent of the four SMPs and the three dimensions of SP in companies were implemented at a slight level. Illegal Mining and Sustainability Performance: Evidence from Ashanti Region, Ghana

As illegal mining in Ghana has become increasingly rampant ever, this study aimed at examining the effect of illegal mining on the dimensions of sustainability performance among crop farmers and the challenges they face because of illegal mining in the Ashanti Region, Ghana.
 To investigate the intriguing connections among illegal mining and sustainability performance among crop farmers, this paper draws on multidisciplinary literature and collects empirical data from 250 respondents in the Atwima Nwabiagya and Atwima Mponua Districts, Ghana to test the proposed model and hypotheses using structural equation modeling.
 All the three (3) elements or paradigms of sustainability performance were negatively affected by illegal mining activities. It was also observed that a significant positive relationship exists among all the elements of sustainability performance hence a consequence on one element may affect the other.
 Unlike most research on illegal mining that has been theoretical, this study represents one of the few empirical analyses of how illegal mining may affect sustainability performance

The impact of sharing economy practices on sustainability performance in the Chinese construction industry

The sharing economy is gradually reshaping the construction industry. This study identifies the use of digital platforms, internal sharing practices with project stakeholders, and external sharing practices with unfamiliar companies as three critical elements of sharing economy practices from a socio-technical perspective. The impacts of these three elements on sustainability performance, including economic performance, environmental performance and social performance, are investigated. Based on a survey of the Chinese construction industry, proposed hypotheses are tested using structural equation modelling. The results indicate that the use of digital platforms can promote both internal and external sharing practices in the construction industry. While internal sharing practices have positive impacts on the three dimensions of sustainability performance, external sharing practices can positively influence only environmental performance. The findings enhance the understanding of sharing economy practices and provide empirical evidence of the relationships between sharing economy practices and sustainability performance in the construction sector.
