 Zhai Zhenming’s argument that invasive brain–computer interfaces are dangerous is timely and well grounded. However, the danger of (non-invasive) artificial intelligence (AI) technology in unduly overlooked. First, non-invasive AI can cause as much harm to human agency and freedom as brain–computer interface technology. Second, AI may push many people away from jobs that give meaning to their lives. At the same time, the attribution of responsibilities becomes difficult, if not impossible, with the involvement of AI in decision-making. Finally, optimism about treating generative AI as equivalent to human overlooks a fundamental difficulty of collective life, namely the problem of mutual assurance.

Citizen blame attributions for government fiscal crises: Experimental evidence from China

AbstractThis study conducts a randomized survey experiment to examine the impact of budgeting professionalism, environmental shocks, and fiscal transparency on citizen blame attributions during government fiscal crises. Theoretically, we distinguish between two logics of responsibility attribution: causal responsibility stresses the causal link between an actor's actions and specific phenomena; functional responsibility underlines an actor's legal, moral, or social obligations in relation to such phenomena. Our experiment focuses on empirically testing causal responsibility. Moreover, fiscal transparency may shape citizens' perceptions regarding government fiscal performance and subsequently influence blame attributions. The experimental results show that citizens attribute less blame to government leaders when professional experts play a more important role in the budgeting process, when localities experience severe environmental shocks, or when governments exhibit greater fiscal transparency. These findings support inferences based on the logic of causal responsibility and establish a clear relationship between fiscal transparency and citizen perceptions of government performance.

Taking responsibility responsibly: looking forward to remedying injustice

ABSTRACT What does it mean to be responsible for structural injustice? According to Iris Marion Young, the ongoing and socially embedded character of structural injustice imposes a future-oriented obligation to work with others toward creating remedial, institutional change. Young explains, ‘Political responsibility seeks less to reckon debts than to bring about results’ (Young, 2003, p. 13). This paper conceptually develops how the goal of remediation bears on responsibility in relation to structural injustice. Does the attribution of responsibility in this context call upon individuals to simply do anything in efforts to affect progressive change? If not, then to what extent are these attributions of responsibility action guiding? On what basis do they direct agents to effectively intervene on relevant conditions and processes rather than act in ways that exacerbate the injustice? I explore the role of etiological explanation in the attribution and acceptance of corrective responsibility, which refers to diagnosis of the operative causation of unjust outcomes. After probing tensions within prominent models of corrective responsibility, I offer my own model attempting to resolve those issues. I argue the forward-looking nature of the call to participate in remedying social problems includes a demand for agents to do so in a way that is itself responsible. I theorize a framework of taking responsibility responsibly. This framework accounts for the moral difference between a conscientiously formulated program of remedial action and a quixotic exercise in reckless delusion.

Rural cooperatives social responsibility in promoting Sustainability-oriented Activities in the agricultural sector: Nexus of community, enterprise, and government

The agricultural sector and Sustainability-oriented Activities (S-OAs) of farmers are recognized as critical factors to realize a more sustainable future. Hence, this study aimed to present a model for enhancing S-OAs among farmers by integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into the structure of rural cooperatives. This research employed the stakeholder theory and a structural equation model to bridge the existing gap in understanding the nexus of farmers, cooperatives, and the government. This aimed to reinforce CSR and, consequently, S-OAs among farmers. The results revealed that the engagement of rural cooperatives in community-oriented ethical activities (C-OEAs) exhibited the first significant step toward enhancing CSR, which significantly promotes trust among farmers and their participation in cooperative programs. On the other hand, findings have demonstrated that a company's engagement in C-OEAs deeply results from its dependency level on the government. It was revealed that increasing external farmer participation, due to cooperative tool utilization, does not significantly impact CSR implementation within cooperatives. Overall, our results exhibited different approaches to strengthen S-OAs among farmers based on the interlinked dimensions of social responsibility. This assists in reinforcing S-OAs among farmers.

Corporate social responsibility dimensions and stock price crash risk: Evidence from the management's self-interest perspective

This paper adopts the lens of management's self-interest motives to explore the potential influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its distinct dimensions on the risk of stock price crashes. Our findings reveal that CSR performance can effectively reduce the likelihood of future stock price crashes. Notably, the principal source of this risk mitigation stems from the dimensions of environmental responsibility and stakeholder responsibility, while the dimension of social responsibility does not exhibit a statistically significant effect on this phenomenon. We further find undervalued companies are able to benefit more from CSR and its various dimensions in terms of crash risk mitigation. Finally, we adopt the difference-in-difference test to discern the underlying mechanisms. Our research highlights that CSR, particularly environmental responsibility and stakeholder responsibility, contributes to the reduction of inefficient investments, deters management from selling shares, and curbs online platform manipulation, ultimately leading to a decreased risk of stock price crashes.

Identifying the dimensions of philanthropic CSR in the FMCG sector: agenda for the sustainability of business

Purpose This study aims to use a multi-stage scale development process to identify the dimensions of philanthropic corporate social responsibility (PCSR) in India’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a study to develop a comprehensive, reliable and valid scale for measuring PCSR based on the customer perception of FMCG product manufacturers. This research adopted a comprehensive and detailed scale development process using multi-stage sampling for scale development. This final study was conducted on a sample of 402 respondents from the city of Jaipur, India. Findings The results have underlined the multi-dimensional aspect of PCSR; these dimensions are: altruism towards society, volunteering for local community development, generosity towards ecology, benevolent spirit and problem-solving charity. Practical implications This study gives valuable insights into philanthropic scale development in the FMCG sector that can immensely help domestic and international marketers to formulate CSR as a strategy. This research provides insights into a wide range of scales which can be base for future research studies that aim to explore different organizational settings. Originality/value PCSR and CSR are important for developing strategies for sustainable businesses across the globe. Dimensions of PCSR will be useful for practitioners and researchers in developing second-order constructs for future studies.

The journalistic preference for extreme exemplars: educational socialization, psychological biases, or editorial policy?

Abstract Exemplars are central in news reporting. However, extreme negative exemplars can bias citizens’ factual perceptions and attributions of political responsibility. Nonetheless, our knowledge of the factors shaping journalistic preferences for including exemplars in news stories is limited. We investigate the extent to which educational socialization, psychological biases, and editorial policy shape journalistic preferences for extreme negative exemplars. We field large-scale survey experiments to a population sample of journalism students, a nationally representative sample of citizens, and a representative sample of “young people” and obtain evaluations of news value, newsworthiness, and behavioral measures of the actual write-up of news articles. We find significant support for the role of editorial policy and limited support for the role of educational socialization and psychological biases. In a time where economic pressures and the proliferation of digital media potentially lead editors to prioritize clickbait, these findings suggest that structural biases in news coverage may be aggravated.

Influence of self-esteem on regret for criticized normal versus abnormal consumer decisions

PurposeThis study aims to examine differences in regret between individuals with high vs low self-esteem that follows from negative appraisals for unsuccessful consumer decisions that are either congruent or not with perceived norms. This study also tested the mediating role of decision responsibility and the ability of psychological repair work in regulating regret.Design/methodology/approachHypotheses were tested through four experimental studies using student and international panel samples across different consumer decision scenarios to generalize the findings of the study.FindingsThis study shows that high self-esteem individuals regret less a bad decision when it is congruent (normal) than when it is incongruent (abnormal) with the prevalent norms, while lower self-esteem individuals tend to regret equally both normal and abnormal decisions. This study further shows that this effect is driven by internal responsibility attributions. Finally, the results also suggest that high self-esteem people are more efficient than low self-esteem people in regulating regret, but only when the decision is abnormal.Originality/valueThe present research has important contributions to both regret and self-esteem literature. First, this study explored the role of self-esteem on regret, an individual variable that has been studied relatively little in regret literature. Second, this study has shown, consistent with recent findings, that decision congruence with the norms is a more suitable predictor of regret than whether the decision involves action or inaction. Finally, this study showed that stimulating individuals to self-enhance by engaging in psychological repair work led individuals to regulate regret, consistent with regret regulation theory.

Satisfacción percibida respecto del cuidado enfermero con relación a usuarios/sujetos de atención y sus acompañantes en el Servicio de Clínica Médica del Hospital Zonal de Comodoro Rivadavia

The present study focuses on the evaluation of the satisfaction of users and subjects of care in a hospital service. A simple cross-sectional descriptive research design was used and data were collected through a questionnaire with 15 questions addressing dimensions such as empathy, responsibility, technical capacity, communication and tangible goods. The results show that the majority of respondents are satisfied with the service, with no significant differences according to sociodemographic variables. However, lower satisfaction is observed among accompanying persons in the dimensions of responsibility and tangible goods. It is concluded that satisfaction is high in several dimensions of nursing care, but a lack of tangible resources is noted due to the shortage of personnel during data collection. It is recommended that similar studies be conducted in other hospitals to obtain a more complete representation of the perception of nursing care in different hospital settings.

What determines citizens' recycling behavior of express delivery packaging? Empirical evidence from a comprehensive model

The dramatic increase in express delivery packaging poses severe environmental threats, making recycling a top priority. A comprehensive conceptual framework was developed for exploring citizens’ recycling behavior by integrating structuration and social network theories, and the nonlinear effects of determinants were identified. Further, the 1538 micro-data obtained from five eastern Chinese cities are used for descriptive, correlation, and ordinary least squares regression analysis. It is clarified that there are three distinct recycling behavior patterns, the most prevalent of which is collection station recycling behavior (CSRB), followed by mart equipment recycling behavior (SERB), and door-to-door recycling behavior (DTDRB). The empirical results indicate that social sanctions, responsibility attribution, and centrality positively predict recycling behaviors. Place attachment strengthens SERB and DTDRB. Notably, the authority effect exerts inverted U-shaped effects on recycling behaviors, and trust has an inverted U-shaped effect on CSRB. This study reveals the nonlinear effects of variables, and the findings provide implications for recycling practice.

The Moralizing Effect: self-directed emotions and their impact on culpability attributions

IntroductionA general trend in the psychological literature suggests that guilt contributes to morality more than shame does. Unlike shame-prone individuals, guilt-prone individuals internalize the causality of negative events, attribute responsibility in the first person, and engage in responsible behavior. However, it is not known how guilt- and shame-proneness interact with the attribution of responsibility to others.MethodsIn two Web-based experiments, participants reported their attributions of moral culpability (i.e., responsibility, causality, punishment and decision-making) about morally ambiguous acts of killing in different conditions. In Study 1 the vignettes were presented in the 1st person, while in Study 2 in the 3rd person. To test proneness to guilt and shame, we utilized the GASP scale, which differentiates between the affective and behavioral components of each emotion. Statistical analyses were performed in Matlab and R.ResultsWe found that guilt- and shame-proneness were associated with the severity of attributions in both the first and the third person, but the effect was strong only in the guilt case (both subtypes) and shame-affect case, and not in the shame-behavior case. We call this the Moralizing Effect.DiscussionWe wonder whether our finding that guilt-prone people tend to attribute a higher degree of culpability to others is really consistent with the view that guilt motivates people to choose the “moral paths in life”. This echoes views about the harmful aspects of guilt, which have been expressed historically in philosophy, for example, by Friedrich Nietzsche.

Experimental Effects of Substance Use Legality (Sober, Alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine) and Sexual Crime (Indecent Exposure, Rape) on Attributions of Perpetrator Responsibility, Blame, and Punishment

Background: The perceived culpability of a sexual crime perpetrator may be attributed as a function of both the legality of the substance used when committing the crime and the severity of the sex crime. Objectives: The experiment applied attribution theory to examine the simultaneous impact of substance use legality and sexual crime severity on participants’ perceptions of responsibility, blame, and punishment toward sexual crime perpetrators. Methods: Participants (N = 461) in this 4 (substance legality) × 2 (sexual crime severity) experimental design were randomly assigned to one of eight conditions to read a police report depicting a sexual offense. The independent variable of substance legality was manipulated as the perpetrator’s usage of no substance (sober), alcohol (legal), marijuana (partially legal), or cocaine (illegal) at the time of the crime. The second independent variable of sexual crime severity was manipulated as the offense of indecent exposure (mild offense) or rape (severe offense) committed by the perpetrator. After reading the manipulated vignette, participants rated outcome measures involving the perpetrator’s responsibility, blame (guilt attributions, external attributions, and mental element attributions), and punishment (punishment attitudes and punishment severity). Results: Factorial MANCOVA and ANCOVAs were performed. Participants tended to attribute greater responsibility and blame, but not punishment, toward the sober perpetrator compared to the perpetrator intoxicated with alcohol, marijuana, or cocaine. Additionally, participants attributed significantly greater responsibility, blame, and punishment toward the perpetrator of rape compared to indecent exposure. Conclusions: The experiment supported that both substance legality and sexual crime severity uniquely served as contextual factors that played roles in people’s judgments about crimes. Findings offer drug policy information regarding how substance intoxication is perceived as a mitigating excuse in criminal justice systems for committing sexual offenses.

Ukraine and Russia, Ireland and Britain: Quasi-colonial subjugation, anti-imperial nationalism and conflict, end of empire, and ‘the lost peace’: A review essay

This essay reviews new books on the fraught relationships between Ukraine, Russia and North Atlatic Treaty Organization countries since 1990, and on comparative studies of quasi-colonial subjugation, the development of anti-imperial nationalism and conflict, and protracted and violent transitions to full national independence in Ireland and Ukraine. There are comparisons of the ways in which four centuries of recurrent tension, conflict and divergence between Ukraine and Russia either resembled or differed from the five centuries of fraught relationships between Ireland and Britain. Ireland’s Great Famine (1846–1849) is compared with Ukraine’s Holodomor (1932–1933). The essay also assesses conflicting attributions of responsibility for ‘squandering’ the opportunity to enhance European security and global peace during the 1990s, and for bringing about dramatic escalations of Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 – initiating a ‘Second Cold War’ from 2014 onward.

The Effect of Express Delivery Robot Autonomy on Customer Responsibility Attribution in a Service Failure Scenario

In order to improve the efficiency of e-commerce logistics services and reduce labor costs, many cities have introduced express delivery robots to provide express delivery services. Robotic service failures occur from time to time due to the complexity of the service environment, immature technology, and other constraints. This study investigates the effect of service robot autonomy on customer responsibility attribution using a 2 (robot autonomy: high vs. low) x 2 (customer participation level: high vs. low) between-groups experimental approach to investigate the mediating role of controllability and the moderating role of customer participation using the scenario of service failure of a express delivery robot. The experimental results show that robot autonomy increases customers' attribution of responsibility to the robot in service failure scenarios, and controllability partially mediates this effect, but the moderating effect of customer participation is not demonstrated. The experimental results provide implications for the design and use of service robots.

Mutual entailment between causation and responsibility

The standard view in philosophy is that responsibility entails causation. Most philosophers treat this entailment claim as an evident insight into the ordinary concepts of responsibility and causation. Further, it is taken to be equally obvious that the reversal of this claim does not hold: causation does not entail responsibility. In contrast, Sytsma and Livengood have put forward an account of the use of ordinary causal attributions (statements like “X caused Y”) that contends that they are typically used interchangeably with responsibility attributions (statements like “X is responsible for Y”). Put in terms of the concepts at play in these attributions, this account suggests that the reversal of the entailment claim may also hold, and, a fortiori, there would be mutual entailment between the ordinary concepts of responsibility and causation. Using the cancellability test, we report the results of three pre-registered studies providing empirical evidence that causation and responsibility are mutually entailed by each other.

Predictors of Vaccination Intentions and Behaviour during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy.

The present research aimed at understanding individuals' vaccination intentions and protective behaviours against COVID-19 through two different studies. In Study 1 (N = 213, 73% women; mean age = 24.03) the Protection Motivation Theory model was tested considering the fear of COVID-19 as a possible mediator between threat appraisal (in terms of both health and social life) and intentions to get vaccinated when the vaccination was not yet available. Study 2 (N = 1111, 68.9% women; mean age = 38.33) was conducted when the vaccine became available for the entire population. Through this study, by adopting the 5C model of vaccine hesitancy as a theoretical framework, we aimed to understand how people who got vaccinated and the ones who did not differed, considering fear of vaccination, personality and vaccination hesitancy. In Study 1, social limitations, perceived severity and COVID-19 perceived vulnerability were significantly and positively related to fear of COVID-19. Contrary to what we expected, fear of COVID-19 was not a significant predictor of vaccination intention, which was predicted by both response efficacy and self-efficacy. In Study 2, in line with previous studies, vaccine hesitancy was negatively related to vaccination. More specifically, the social-oriented dimension of collective responsibility was the strongest predictor of effective behaviour. Our findings provide insights into the complexity of vaccine acceptance and emphasise the need for targeted interventions to promote vaccination and mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.

Responsibility Gaps and Black Box Healthcare AI: Shared Responsibilization as a Solution

As sophisticated artificial intelligence software becomes more ubiquitously and more intimately integrated within domains of traditionally human endeavor, many are raising questions over how responsibility (be it moral, legal, or causal) can be understood for an AI’s actions or influence on an outcome. So called “responsibility gaps” occur whenever there exists an apparent chasm in the ordinary attribution of moral blame or responsibility when an AI automates physical or cognitive labor otherwise performed by human beings and commits an error. Healthcare administration is an industry ripe for responsibility gaps produced by these kinds of AI. The moral stakes of healthcare are often life and death, and the demand for reducing clinical uncertainty while standardizing care incentivizes the development and integration of AI diagnosticians and prognosticators. In this paper, we argue that (1) responsibility gaps are generated by “black box” healthcare AI, (2) the presence of responsibility gaps (if unaddressed) creates serious moral problems, (3) a suitable solution is for relevant stakeholders to voluntarily responsibilize the gaps, taking on some moral responsibility for things they are not, strictly speaking, blameworthy for, and (4) should this solution be taken, black box healthcare AI will be permissible in the provision of healthcare.

The Influence of Corporate Social Responsibility Aspects on Business Model Innovation, Competitive Advantage, and Company Performance: A Study on Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Iran

This study explores how the dimensions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as defined by Carroll, along with environmental responsibility, impact business model innovation (BMI), competitive advantage, and firm performance in small- and medium-sized enterprises in Iran. This paper proposes a theoretical framework, based on past studies. Afterward, structural equation modeling was used to test the conceptual model. The data of this research were collected face-to-face, and 483 valid questionnaires were collected from small- and medium-sized businesses in Iran. The results show that all dimensions of CSR (except philanthropic) directly and significantly affect Business Model Innovation. Furthermore, the competitive advantage is significantly impacted by the economic, legal, and ethical aspects of CSR. Additionally, the findings demonstrate that both BMI and competitive advantage play a direct and substantial role in influencing a company’s performance. This study represents one of the initial investigations to specifically analyze how each facet of corporate social responsibility influences Business Model Innovation and competitive advantage. It is worth noting that a new dimension, environmental responsibility, was incorporated into Carroll’s original model due to the growing significance of environmental concerns. This paper gives managers a better insight into CSR and its effects on company performance. In addition, it shows managers which aspects of CSR can have an impact on BMI and competitive advantage.

Pelaksanaan Pendidikan Karakter Religius Siswa di MAS Al-Madani Kecamatan Luhak Nan Duo Kabupaten Pasaman Barat

This research was motivated by problems found in the religious character education of students at MAS Al-Madani, Luhak Nan Duo District, West Pasaman Regency. This research aims to explore information about the Implementation of Student Religious Character Education at MAS Al-Madani, Luhak Nan Duo District, West Pasaman Regency in terms of Tolerance, Sincerity, Honesty, Responsibility and Cooperation. This type of research is quantitative descriptive. Total 66 students (population) and 66 people (sample). Sampling used a total sampling technique considering the number of samples was less than one hundred. The instrument used was a questionnaire with a Likert scale model with 48 items. The data collection instrument was carried out with five answer choices, namely Always (SL), Often (SR), Sometimes (KD), Rarely (JR), Never (TP). The implementation of students' religious character education seen from the Tolerance dimension obtained an average score of 4.05. The implementation of students' religious character education seen from the Honesty dimension obtained an average score of 3.86 in the good category. The implementation of students' religious character education seen from the Ikhlas dimension obtained an average score of 3.7 in the good category. Student services seen from the Collaborative Responsibility dimension obtained an average score of 3.78 in the good category. The implementation of students' religious character education seen from the Ikhlas dimension obtained an average score of 3.95 in the good category. Thus, it can be concluded that 5 indicators out of 11 sub-indicators achieved good criteria with an average score of 3.87.

A new planetary affective science framework for eco-emotions: Findings on eco-anger, eco-grief, and eco-anxiety

Emotions play a critical role in human health and behavior yet have largely been overlooked in the context of the global environmental crisis (GEC). Despite recent emphasis on climate anxiety and eco-anxiety, there is a lack of psychometric or dimensional measures assessing the fuller range of GEC-associated emotions, especially beyond Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) contexts. Further conceptual gaps hinder structured inquiry and generalizability. This exploratory study applies a new planetary affective science framework to holistically and systematically address these issues. We used a circumplex model to map core affect and structured interviews with 15 Turkish environmentalists to explore the range of eco-emotions. Our findings suggest the prevalence of eco-anger and eco-grief over the eco-anxiety most often assessed in WEIRD contexts. Similar findings in post-disaster situations underscore participants’ heightened vulnerability to cumulative stressors and the dangers of emotion-specific omissions (e.g., anger) in assessment tools. We identified environmental justice, developing country tension, self-efficacy dimensions, and responsibility attributions to the Turkish government and Global North as key contextual factors in these differentiated eco-emotional patterns. Findings constitute the first step toward more holistic, diverse, and conceptually rigorous eco-emotions research, urgently needed for more effective pro-environmental health and behavioral interventions amidst the intensifying GEC.
