Nourishing Connections: Fostering Collaboration on Food Ethics Through Art

This paper explores collaborative workshops conducted at the International Socially Engaged Art Symposium (ISEAS), concentrating on the convergence of art and science in the realm of food values and ethics. With 20 artists and scientists participating, ISEAS employed arts-based methods to investigate food-related themes within diverse communities. One team, comprising three artists and a food ethics researcher, collaborated with 17 secondary school students in Seinäjoki (Finland). Their three-day event utilised various arts-based methods to address food ethics issues, such as availability, equity, sustainability, norms, and food justice. Integrating scientific and artistic knowledge, the study showcases the effectiveness of conversational art-making, revealing the role of art and science in fostering awareness of ethical dimensions in food production and consumption. The study highlights the potential of conversational art as a potent tool in community projects, as it facilitates dialogue on challenging topics beyond verbal communication. The paper underscores how art and science can collectively engage communities by encouraging transformative thinking and action.

Analysis of Consumer Preferences on Mitsubishi Vehicles

The automotive industry is increasingly competitive, making consumer preferences the key to achieving market success. This research analyzes consumer preferences for Mitsubishi vehicles with a focus on product, price and location factors. The research method used was a survey with a questionnaire to 178 people as a sample. The data collected is analyzed using statistical techniques to identify the factors that most influence consumer preferences. The research results show that product dimensions are the main factor influencing consumer preferences, more dominant than price and dealer location. The implications of these findings direct Mitsubishi to continue improving product quality, innovating in technology, and strengthening digital services in order to maintain consumer loyalty and optimize marketing strategies in the automotive market.

Effects of climate change on migration in Latin America and Caribbean: a scoping review

Climate change-induced natural disasters such as hurricanes, landslides, forest fires, and changes in precipitation directly affect rural sectors that depend on field production and other dimensions of everyday life. This generates the mobilization of people from their homes to safer places within the same country or across borders. There is a lack of information on the impacts of climate change on environmental migrants in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). This scoping review aims to describe the scientific evidence of the health effects of climate change on migrant in LAC. The review was conducted using databases from PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), and Google Scholar in English, Spanish and Portuguese. After screening the title, abstract, and full text of identified hits (n = 726), 31 records were finally included. Evidence indicates that climate change relates to health and healthcare, psychosocial and infrastructure dimensions among migrants in LAC. Health effects refer to limited access to healthcare, underdiagnosis, increased susceptibility to diseases and mental health conditions like stress and anxiety. Psychosocial dimensions refer to a heightened risk of sexual and gender-based violence, social marginalization, family separation, and loss of identity and culture. Infrastructure refers to environmental degradation and agricultural and urban infrastructure destruction. Multiple adaptations to these conditions are described among migrant populations in the region. Recommendations for improvements are presented. This scoping review suggests climate change’s significant health, psychosocial, and infrastructural associations with migrants in Latin America.

PID controller design for manipulating electrorheological valves with mesh electrodes using in 2D matrix display

Abstract The electrorheological (ER) valve with parallel electrodes structure has an inherent characteristic. The electrodes gap is the same as its flow channel gap, which causes a strong coupling relationship between the applied voltages and the flow rates of the ER valve. If flow rates of ER valves in the condition of turn on operational mode were increased, their applied voltages were increased necessarily for keeping their shutdown operational mode, which brings a bunch of problems of product costs and dimensions, especially when multiple ER valves with different operational modes work together, such as application of ER valves matrix used in 2D matrix displays. The mesh electrodes structure can decouple the relationship between the electrodes gap and the flow channel gap of parallel electrodes structure. However, due to the complexity of mesh electrodes structure, a mathematic model is difficult to be established theoretically. And, a mathematic model of ER valve with mesh electrodes plays a vital role in designing its controller. By analyzing the composition elements of an ER valve with mesh electrodes, a semi experimental model was established using the parametric identification toolbox of MATLAB. The consistency between the output of recognition model and the output of validation data reaches 93.46%. Subsequently the PID controller for ER valves with mesh electrodes was designed to meet the operational demands of a 2D matrix display using Simulink. The constrain of simulation was that the pressures of flow channel inlets of ER valves, the dynamic responses of ER valves with mesh electrodes kept stable and within its operational range. The results will be helpful for applications of ER valves with mesh electrodes.

The health and economic dimensions of honey production in Imo state, Nigeria

A study was conducted on honey production in Imo state of Nigeria, with a focus on the health and economic dimensions of the industry. The research was carried out using a multi-stage sampling procedure, and a sample size of 80 honey-producer respondents was selected. Data was collected through a well-structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that honey producers in the area had a mean age of 51 years, 11 years of education, 21 years of farming/bee-keeping experience, and a household size of 6 persons. The average annual household income was €709.10, with a farm size/number of hives kept of 72 hives per farmer and a quantity of honey produced per annum of 145 litres. The cost and returns analysis showed that the cost of production of honey per litre and profit per litre were €0.40 and €2.40, respectively. The study also determined the nutritional uses and health benefits of honey (e.g. healing wounds, treating ulcers, controlling sore throats and colds, boosting immunity, and as an antibacterial agent). Several factors, including uncontrolled bush burning, bee forage shortage, deforestation, theft of beehives, colony absconding, and poor agricultural practices which strongly constrain honey production has been observed. It is concluded that honey production is a very profitable venture with numerous uses and health benefits and venturing youths into honey production as a source of livelihood should be encouraged, and extension education should be tailored to technologies in beekeeping and the identification of genuine honey to minimize the success of adulteration, among others.

“The Shifting Light of History”: Addressing Philosophy of Memory in Julian Barnes’s <i>Elizabeth Finch</i>

This article discusses the narrative construction of various philosophical reflections on cultural memory in Julian Barnes’s novel <i>Elisabeth Finch</i>. It addresses the dichotomy between recollection and oblivion, presenting a memory process as a the “problem of forgotten evidence”, thoroughly discussed in today’s Cultural and Memory Studies. While contemporary scholars and philosophers aim at reflecting on the role of memory in metaphysics and epistemology, mainly relating the process of recollection either to personal identity, or the experience of time, space and epistemic rationale, the dimension of collective memory, and its foregrounding role in everyone’s self-perceptiveness, receives a considerably reduced critical attention. The literary analysis of <i>Elizabeth Finch</i> seeks to problematize this divisive understanding of functions of memory, proposing instead to consider the semantic complementarity of various processes of recollection/forgetting, connecting the narrative representation of events that one has personally experienced and the officially stated collective renderings of factual memory. It resists considering personal remembering and collective forgetting as ostensibly competing rationales, proposing to delve deeper into a tightly crafted relationship between the perception of one’s identity in time and epistemological framework of collective experience mostly focused on the officially stated dimension of memory. Revisiting discourses on religion associated with the narrative construction of borderlands in Julian Barnes’s <i>Elizabeth Finch</i>, this article contributes to reconsider collective memory and counter-memory not as mutually exclusive, but as synthetized and put into productive motion narrative dimensions. The intertextual articulation of discourses on religion fosters new theoretical perspectives for rethinking counter-memory not only as a mode of recovering silenced and contested versions of the European history, but also as a means of providing multidimensional and transcultural interpretation of the collective past. Perceived as a form of discursive resistance to any kind of political and social dominance, the narrative construction of “forgotten evidence” elucidates the complex post-dialectical relationship between official collective memory and marginalized counter-memory.

An exact and metaheuristic optimization framework for solving Vehicle Routing Problems with Shipment Consolidation using population-based and Swarm Intelligence

The Vehicle Routing Problem with Shipment Consolidation (VRPSC) is a novel variation of the vehicle routing problem that involves multiple commodities, multiple dimensions, a fleet with different types of vehicles, and the challenge of consolidating shipments during the route. Exact algorithms have been suggested to solve the VRPSC problems. Besides exact algorithms, specific metaheuristic algorithms are employed to deliver solutions of superior quality, albeit not necessarily optimal. The Artificial Immune System (AIS) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) are the metaheuristic optimization techniques applied in this research. Genetic programming is included in evolutionary computing, while AIS is included in swarm intelligence. This research presents a vehicle routing model with product consolidation and different product dimensions. These criteria were selected due to their significant impact on the complexity of mathematical problem-solving in VRPSC. The results from applying these metaheuristic algorithms will be compared with those of exact algorithms to compare and analyse different VRPSC solution approaches.

An integrated analysis of consumer purchase decision-making on second-hand trading platforms: evidence from china

ABSTRACT In the context of circular economy and sustainable development, second-hand trading platforms are in the preliminary stages of development, revealing the consumer behavior of second-hand trading platform consumers has become a challenging topic. Previous studies have often used technology acceptance models to analyze consumers’ acceptance of electronic commerce platform technologies. However, these studies have not analyzed consumer purchase decision-making well, lacked affective explanations of the logic of consumer decisions, and lacked discussions of multiple stakeholders. Therefore, this study proposes a comprehensive framework model for consumer decision making on second-hand trading platforms. We analyzed consumer purchase decision process, identified three key dimensions eight factors. Through a combination of the ABC attitude model and the technology acceptance model, we sorted out a hypothetical model consisting of cognitive, affective, and behavioral. Then, we validated and analyzed the empirical results in China using the partial least squares structural equation technique. The findings underscore the significant impact of product and platform dimensions on consumer sentiment and behavior. Theoretically, this study advances the understanding of consumer decision-making in the context of second-hand platforms, particularly within the framework of the circular economy. Practically, it offers actionable insights for merchants and platform operators to enhance user experience and service quality, thereby supporting the sustainable growth of e-commerce.

Achieving metal-like catalysis from semiconductors for on-surface synthesis

Free of posttransfer, on-surface synthesis (OSS) of single-atomic-layer nanostructures directly on semiconductors holds considerable potential for next-generation devices. However, due to the high diffusion barrier and abundant defects on semiconductor surfaces, extended and well-defined OSS on semiconductors has major difficulty. Furthermore, given semiconductors' limited thermal catalytic activity, initiating high-barrier reactions remains a significant challenge. Herein, using TiO2(011) as a prototype, we present an effective strategy for steering the molecule adsorption and reaction processes on semiconductors, delivering lengthy graphene nanoribbons with extendable widths. By introducing interstitial titanium (Tiint) and oxygen vacancies (Ov), we convert TiO2(011) from a passive supporting template into a metal-like catalytic platform. This regulation shifts electron density and surface dipoles, resulting in tunable catalytic activity together with varied molecule adsorption and diffusion. Cyclodehydrogenation, which is inefficient on pristine TiO2(011), is markedly improved on Tiint/Ov-doped TiO2. Even interribbon cyclodehydrogenation is achieved. The final product's dimensions, quality, and coverage are all controllable. Tiint doping outperforms Ov in producing regular and prolonged products, whereas excessive Tiint compromises molecule landing and coupling. This work demonstrates the crucial role of semiconductor substrates in OSS and advances OSS on semiconductors from an empirical trial-and-error methodology to a systematic and controllable paradigm.

Exploring the Association Between Knowledge Management and Innovation Capability in R&D Centers

Businesses striving to survive in today's highly competitive market conditions are continuously trying to utilize innovation related strategies to sustain their position and competitiveness. Knowledge management, on the other hand, has been shown to have a significant influence on the innovation capability of the organization. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between knowledge management practices and innovation capability in research and development (R&D) centers operating in Istanbul and Kocaeli / Turkiye through an empirical study. The data used in the study was collected from the managers of R&D centers using a web-based questionnaire, as well as face-to-face meetings. A complete census method was used as the sampling technique, and 220 R&D center managers in the region were contacted. Among the managers contacted, only 182 managers provided data and were included in the study. Multiple hierarchical regression analysis was used to analyze the data obtained. As a result of the analyses, it is found that the knowledge acquisition dimension has a significant positive relationship with the learning capability, production capability, marketing capability and strategic planning capability. In addition, the results revealed that storing and sharing knowledge have significant and positive relationship with production capability, and transforming knowledge has a significant and positive relationship with both marketing and organizational capability. In particular, it is concluded that knowledge acquisition and sharing are important in terms of learning, production, marketing and strategic planning dimensions of innovation capability specifically in R&D centers.

This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, which involves describing phenomena or events as they occur. The findings of this study are as follows: First, regarding the product dimension, it is essential to focus on product quality, including durability, taste (for food and beverages), and packaging. Second, in terms of pricing, it is crucial to analyze competitors' prices for similar products to offer prices that are affordable to Labstore's primary consumers, who are mostly students. Third, the location and facilities of Labstore are generally considered good, with most participants finding Labstore a comfortable place to shop. Lastly, in the promotion dimension, the study suggests enhancing promotional efforts by adding cost-effective yet impactful media.

Assessment of the Effect of Implementing an Obesity Center of Integrated Responsibility on Hospital Performance in Portugal

The continuous increase in the prevalence of obesity has generated growing concern, having become an important challenge at a global level in economic and public health terms. In Portugal, the treatment of obesity presents significant problems in access to health services. In this context, there is a need to implement new management models that offer more effective responses. Centers of integrated responsibility, already implemented in this area, are a cutting-edge approach, and it is important to evaluate their performance and identify recommendations for improving the model. The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of implementing an obesity center of integrated responsibility on hospital performance. This study was conducted using a comprehensive multiple-case study approach, which was predominantly descriptive but also included explanatory elements. The methodological approach is a well-balanced mix of quantitative and qualitative analyses. The study evaluates various hospital performance indicators, encompassing the dimensions of access, production, efficiency, quality, and economic-financial, both before and after the implementation of the new model. The overall results indicate that the implementation of an obesity center of integrated responsibility led to improvements in hospital performance, particularly in the dimensions of access, production, and efficiency. While these findings are promising, the study also identifies areas for potential improvement in the model, such as organizational, functional, and legal aspects, including the method of granting incentives and the funding process. In the analyzed cases, this new organizational model proved to be a solution for improving hospital performance, particularly around obesity. These units can play a fundamental strategic role in the National Health System, contributing to access to specialized treatments, retention of professionals and financial sustainability.

A comprehensive approach for assessing the causes of low productivity in the construction sector: a systematic categorization and ranking using Pareto and Fuzzy analysis

Implementing a comprehensive and globally adaptable assessment approach for causes of low construction productivity has proven to be a contemporary challenge. This prevails since the factors influencing the construction industry vary significantly by geographic region and operational characteristics. Hence, substantial research on this topic has restricted its scope to a particular location without a comprehensive global categorization. Furthermore, much of this research has neglected the influence of subjectivity in the stakeholder response evaluations. To address these shortcomings, this study provides a unique assessment of the construction context initiated by a systematic review of 130 studies published worldwide over the previous 32 years. The 915 unique factors from this systematic review were then categorized into regional and productivity dimensions through Pareto and Frequency analysis techniques. The regional categorization encompassed nine distinct regions spanning the world, while the productivity component encompassed a set of 14 distinctive benchmarks that characterize productivity in the construction industry. These sorted factors were then adapted in the Sri Lankan context as a pilot study through a cross-sectional survey including 117 stakeholders. The following Fuzzy analysis allowed the mitigation of the ambiguity of these survey responses while ranking the factors based on a calculated importance index while also considering the interdependence of the introduced benchmarks. Ultimately, the employed assessment approach for identifying and ranking factors contributing to low construction productivity in this study is proposed as globally adaptable with its successful incorporation of subjective evaluation.

Application of advances in the development and production of optical fiber in the development and design of fiber optic devices.

The dimensions of devices based on optical fiber are limited by the sensitivity of the optical fiber to macrobending, which leads to an increase in optical losses at small bending radii. New types of fibers with low macrobending losses make it possible to significantly tighten the dimensions. However, there may be a risk of fiber failure at bending points during the life of the product due to mechanical fatigue. In the article, based on the use of a static fatigue model of silica glass, a simple expression is obtained to estimate the probability of fiber failure under long-term bending stress depending on the length of the bent section, bend radius and humidity, taking into account the result of a proof-test carried out by the fiber manufacturer. The possibility of increasing the mechanical reliability of silica fiber by applying a hermetical carbon coating is discussed. The use of the obtained expressions in design makes it possible to reduce the dimensions of fiber optic products without the risk of reducing their reliability.

Sustainable repurpose of end-of-life fiber reinforced polymer composites: A new circular pedestrian bridge concept

In response to global challenges in resource supply, many industries are adopting the principles of the Circular Economy (CE) to improve their resource acquisition strategies. This paper introduces an innovative approach to address the environmental impact of waste Glass Fiber Reinforced-Polymer (GFRP) pipes and panels by repurposing them to manufacture structural components for new bicycle and pedestrian bridges. The study covers the entire process, including conceptualization, analysis, design, and testing of a deck system, with a focus on the manufacturing process for a 7-m-long prototype bridge. The study shows promising results in the concept of a sandwich structure utilizing discarded GFRP pipes and panels, which has the flexibility to account for variabilities in dimensions of incoming products while still meeting mechanical requirements. The LCA analysis shows that the transportation of materials is the governing contributing factor. It was concluded that further development of this concept should be accompanied by a business model that considers the importance of the contributions from the whole value chain.

THE INFLUENCE OF PRODUCT, PRICE, PLACE, PROMOTION, PEOPLE, PROCESS AND PHYSICAL EVIDENCE ON GENERAL PATIENT SATISFACTION IN THE INPATIENT UNIT OF THE ELIM HOSPITAL IN RANTEPAO, NORTH TORAJA REGENCY

This study aims to analyze the influence of product, price, place, promotion, people, process and physical evidence on general patient satisfaction in the inpatient unit of Elim Rantepao Hospital, North Toraja Regency. The population of this study is 15,798 general patients, of which 375 were taken as samples. The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant influence of the dimensions of Product, Price, Place, Promotion, People, Process, and Physical Evidence on General Patient Satisfaction in the Inpatient Unit of the hospital. The analysis also showed that the 7P Marketing Mix variable of the people dimension had the most influence on patient satisfaction at the hospital with an Exp value (3,395). The chi square p-value test of 0.747 0.05 was used to test the significance value of the dimension of Place on the overall satisfaction of general patients. This study is expected to provide benefits and can provide input from hospitals to improve the quality of hospital services and marketing.
