Solid state decomposition studies on metal salicylates: Kinetics of iso-thermal dehydration of some transition metal salicylato complexes

The dehydration of cadmium(II ) , copper(II), manganese(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) salicylato complexes were investigated by means of isothermal TG measurements. The Cd, Mn and Zn complexes were dihydrates. Ni complex was a tetrahydrate while Cu formed both dihydrate and tetrahydrate complexes. Thermal decomposition of the studied complexes synthesized using a pure salicylic acid as a ligand occurs in three stages, the oxides finally being formed. The first step being associated to the dehydration of the complexes obeys a phase boundary reaction mechanism. The ΔH values for hydration of Cd, Cu, Mn and Zn dihydrate complexes are 116.5, 76.0, 86.8, 113.3 kJ mol −1 and for Cu and Ni tetrahydrates 117.1 and 108.9 kJ mol −1, respectively.

ESR Studies of a New 3dz2-Type Copper(II)–Crown Ether Complex with Pentagonal Bipyramidal Geometry

Abstract In the presence of the optimum amount of water, the copper(II) ion and 15-crown-5 (15C5) derivatives gave the dihydrated complex in boron trifluoride–diethyl ether (BF3–ether). Based on optical and ESR spectrometric titrations, we found that the crown ether captures the copper(II) ion in the equivalent metal/ligand molar ratio. The d–d band absorptions of the complexes were detected in the near-infrared region. The complexes revealed the characteristic ESR g-anisotropies (gz<gx, gy) which are typical of the copper(II) complexes with a 3dz2 ground-state doublet. The superhyperfine splittings due to the 17O isotope was successfully detected, and the fact of the axial ligation of the water molecule was demonstrated. The ESR parameters were determined by means of the computer simulation of the line shape, while the copper-ligand bonding parameters were estimated from the ESR parameters by means of Bleaney’s calculation.

The Structure of the Cyclodextrin Complex. VII. The Crystal Structure of the α-Cyclodextrin–DMSO–Methanol(1 : 1 : 2) Dihydrate Complex A Simultaneous Inclusion of DMSO and Methanol

Abstract The crystal structure of the α-cyclodextrin(α-CDx)–DMSO–methanol (1 : 1 : 2) dihydrate complex was determined by the X-ray method. The crystal is monoclinic, and the space group is P21 with Z=2. The cell dimensions are a=9.505(1), b=14.150(1), c=19.738(2) Å, and β=102.88(1)°. The structure was solved by an inspection of a Patterson map and by a trial-and-error method, and was refined by the block-diagonal least-squares method to the final R-value of 0.083 for 3732 reflections. The α-CDx ring is nearly hexagonal, with diagonal distances of 8.40–8.53 Å between the glycosidic oxygen atoms. The α-CDx molecules are arranged to form molecular layers perpendicular to the ac plane. The DMSO molecule is located on the secondary hydroxyl side in the α-CDx cavity, forming two hydrogen bonds with the adjacent α-CDx molecules. One methanol molecule is found on the primary hydroxyl side in the cavity, while the other is located outside the cavity. Two water molecules are distributed in the space between α-CDx molecules.

Physico-chemical studies of Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions- p-bromobenzoylacetonate systems

The thermodynamic dissociation constant ( pk D ) of p-bromobenzoylacetone and overall stability constants (log β 2) of its complexes with Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) have been determined potentiometrically in dioxane-water mixture (75%, v/v) at 30±0·1°C in 0·1 M sodium perchlorate. On incorporating pH corrections, the pk D of the ligand became 11·76±0·02. The thermodynamic values of log β 2 have been evaluated using correction-term method, linear plot and method of least squares. The values of log β 2 obtained from the latter method turned out to be 18·64±0·03, 17·94±0·04, 17·53±0·03 and 14·75±0·03 for Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes, respectively. This order is consistent with the Irving-William's series. The solid bis( p-bromobenzoylacetonate) dihydrate complexes of these metals have been synthesised and characterised.

Formulation of Griseofulvin Tablets

AbstractDifficulties in the formulation of griseofulvin tablets are reviewed. A number of griseofulvin direct compression, pre-compression and polyvinylpyrrolidone granulated tablet formulation have been successfully produced and evaluated, in all cases a mixture of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate and calcium phosphato-carbonate complex was used as tablet matrix. Attempts to use other direct compression tablet matrices proved unsuccessful. The tablets produced have been compared with two commercially available products and the data obtained indicated that the formulations developed in this study have potential for further exploitation.

Infra-red spectra of inorganic solids—III: Octacyano complexes of tungsten(IV), (V), and molybdenum(IV), (V), dihydrate and anhydrous

Eight octacyano complexes of tungsten and molybdenum were scanned in the infra-red from 2 to 32 μ (5000 cm −1 to 300 cm −1). For the scan, the KBr disk technique was employed. A special modification of the technique was devised in preparing the anhydrous samples for the infrared examination. The spectra for the dihydrate complexes showed two sharply resolved OH stretching vibration bands. A splitting of the CN stretching vibration band was observed for the dihydrate samples. Upon sample dehydration, the splitting was less prominent and a strong intensity band observed in the spectra of the dihydrate samples around 25 μ (400 cm −1) was shifted to longer wavelengths.
