Automatic selection of molecular images from electron micrographs

Images of single molecules may be selected automatically from a digitized electron micrograph. The algorithm proposed facilitates single-particle averaging and related image procedures aimed at analyzing projections of single molecules. The automatic selection procedure has been applied to images of molecules of lipoyl transsuccinylase.

Preprocessing of electron micrographs of nucleic acid molecules for automatic analysis by computer. II. Noise removal and gap filling

A technique is proposed for computer preprocessing of digitized electron micrographs of nucleic acid strands to facilitate their automatic segmentation and subsequent analysis. This technique, applied after high pass notch filtering the image, removes almost all spurious artifactual objects in the background. This enables the effective use of segmentation and gap filling operations that otherwise could not previously have been applied due to the combinatorics of the computations.

Preprocessing of electron micrographs of nucleic acid molecules for automatic analysis by computer

A technique is proposed for computer preprocessing of digitized electron micrographs of adenovirus type 2 RNA strands to facilitate their automatic segmentation and subsequent analysis. This technique, the notch filter, is able to remove image shading errors due partly to sample preparation, electron microscope optics, photographic processing, and electronic acquisition of the digital image.

A Study on Heavy/Light Atom Discrimination in Bright-Field Electron Microscopy Using the Computer

The Z dependence of the phase angle of the complex atomic scattering amplitude can be used to separate the image due to the heavy atoms from that due to the light atoms of the object structure. The linear theory of image formation applied to a focus series of bright-field images leads to Schiske's formula for the calculation of the structure factor. A program system is described which uses this algorithm for computing both images from a set of digitized electron micrographs of a focus series of uranyl-stained DNA on a thin carbon film.
