El delincuente digital: Conocimiento del medio e inconsecuencia de fines

Digital media researchers celebrate the Internet as a promise of democratic renewal arranged by collective intelligences within an arena of mutual andmulticultural collaboration. Nonetheless, the digital self also delivers a set of features not nearly as attractive. Focusing on the analysis of the individual,rather than the collective, this paper aims to discuss the fundamentals of the digital self. As a guide for this not quite so appealing side of cyberspace,we present a character referred to here as digital delinquent. Being around everywhere in cyberspace, the delinquent processes information (s)he cannotunderstand and gives life to a particular type of Internet user. As a byproduct of information overload, there is in every one of us a little bit of adigital madman.

Branded Selves

Theories of branding and self presentation inform an ethnographic study of how a group of classmates aged 11–12 construct identities by use of the brands and branded resources made available to them on the social network site and elsewhere on the Internet. In the analysis these resources are categorized as space, texts and tools. In using them the young people adopt commercial strategies for presentation of the self. Generally speaking, these users relate their self presentation to brands and branded resources in two different ways: either as collectors or as elaborators. Simple collection of branded resources appears to need less work and be more convincing and more unassailable than elaborating them into their digital self presentations. This gives rise to a disparity between the rich range of attractive and stimulating resources provided by marketers and the level of creativity shown when young users draw on them. Social competition plays a role in reinforcing a uniform use of brands and branded resources. This raises the threshold for free development of individual creativity in the production of digital self presentations on the commercial website.

The Digital Self: Through the Looking Glass of Telecopresent Others

The impact of others in telecopresence on the formation of self has not been well studied, and existing research on the self in cyberspace has focused mostly on issues related to the presentation of self. A major question researchers have been trying to answer is how people present their self to others when they become disembodied and anonymous in the online world. The question the present study attempts to answer, however, is almost the opposite: how do people come to conceive their self when others become disembodied and anonymous? This question is particularly important for understanding the effect of the Internet on self-formation, especially in teenagers who are yet to form a stable view of themselves. Based on the analysis of teenagers' online experience, the present study shows that others on the Internet constitute a distinctive “looking glass” that produces a “digital self” that differs from the self formed offline. Teenagers' playful online self-presentation is thus an integral part of the process of self-formation. As such, “intimate strangers” or “anonymous friends” on the Internet play an important role in affecting the self-development of online teenagers.

Making art in a digital/cyber culture: exploring the dialectic between the manual creator and the digital self

Traditional forms of art making practice have become more complex in this culture that increasingly relies on, and is fascinated by, computer technology and the Internet. The web has facilitated an incredible, often overwhelming amount of information that is multidimensional and multi-contextual, offering artists global connections. A new dialectic however, is emerging as artists approach their work from positions of both manual creators and digital selves. The dialectic raises issues and questions such as: How does the hands-on engagement with artists’ materials interchange with digital manipulation capabilities facilitated by a computer mouse? What do the artists have to say about an art practice that straddles real and virtual contexts? Using conversations with six visual artists of varying age and career levels, this paper begins to explore how digital technologies and cyberspace are affecting hand-made art processes, while highlighting the artists’ perceptions of how these new contexts are enveloping their practices. Issues of researching ideas on the web, integrating digital processes with hand drawn images and the seduction of digital manipulation programs and computer capabilities frame the artists’ conversations.

We Are What We Post? Self-Presentation in Personal Web Space

Abstract This article examines personal Web sites as a conspicuous form of consumer self-presentation. Using theories of self-presentation, possessions, and computer-mediated environments (CMEs), we investigate the ways in which consumers construct identities by digitally associating themselves with signs, symbols, material objects, and places. Specifically, the issues of interest include why consumers create personal Web sites, what consumers want to communicate, what strategies they devise to achieve their goal of self-presentation, and how those Web space strategies compare to the self-presentation strategies of real life (RL). The data reveal insights into the strategies behind constructing a digital self, projecting a digital likeness, digitally associating as a new form of possession, and reorganizing linear narrative structures.

A major improvement to the digital oscillation built-in self test (DOBIST) method is proposed. The DOBIST technique deals with simultaneously testing path delay, gate delay and stuck-at faults in digital integrated circuits. The equations reported allow concurrent multiple oscillations and greatly improve the DOBIST test quality.
