MEXICO CITY By: Miguel A. Valdovinos, MD The Mexico Training Center had an exciting and fruitful ending to 2011. Five gastroenterologists from Mexico and South America were trained in their center: Erik Toro Monjarraz, MD, from Mexico, Gastrointestinal Motility; Luis Enrique Salinas, MD, from Mexico, Gastrointestinal Motility; Belem Torres Guerrero, MD, from Venezuela, Gastrointestinal Motility; Carlos Salgar, MD, from Colombia, Gastrointestinal Motility; and Epigmenio García Correa, MD, from Mexico, Endoscopic Ultrasound. Several workshops and a postgraduate course were held at the training center. This included a hands-on course on Portal Hypertension, where attendees learned the indication and techniques of hepatic hemodynamics and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, a workshop on inflammatory bowel disease in which attendees learned pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and a postgraduate course on new technologies for diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. During the postgraduate course, 600 attendees learned new techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of common and rare GI disorders. International faculty from the United States, Spain, and Brazil collaborated in this course. On May 13, 2011, the training center celebrated World Digestive Health Day with a clinical symposium on Enteric Infections, Clean Water, Clean Food, Clean Environment. Prof. Henry Cohen, World Gastroenterology Organization President, Uruguay; Prof. Christine Surawicz, Washington University, Seattle; and Prof. Francisco Guarner, University Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Barcelona, along with several local investigators, participated in lectures on epidemiology, prevention and treatment of water-borne and food-borne infections, traveler diarrhea, and the role of human microbioma in health and disease. A total of 600 GIs, internists, and general practitioners attended this important symposium. SANTIAGO TRAINING CENTER By: Dr Roque Saenz, MD and Claudio Navarrete, MD The Santiago Training Center also had a busy and exciting second half to 2011, with approximately 10 trainees every 4 months in the different programs. The center has been busy planning the next International Course on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy which will take place next month. A workshop is also being planned in 2013, which corresponds with a workshop with live cases. Several staff members of the center acted as lecturers in various Gastroenterological meetings and events in the Latin American region, including Colombia, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru, and Chile; and Dr. Roque Saenz served as a faculty during the Train the Trainers in Porto Alegre, Brazil. A weekly online international meeting on endoscopic ultrasound takes place every Wednesday afternoon in Chile, Argentina, and Colombia. An “ALUMNI” association from the training center has been created, and it includes extrainee leaders such as Dr Jorge Isaguirre and Dr Asadur Tchekmedyian. Dr Franco Orellana, an alumni from their unit, recently participated in Dr Shimizu’s training in Fukuoka, Japan, and is lecturing on his experience. Next year Dr Jaquelina Gobelet, a staff member of the center, is traveling to Japan for training as well. The Santiago Training Center continues to be very active and will continue to share news throughout the year. ROME TRAINING CENTER By: Guido Costamagna, MD The World Gastroenterology Organization Training Center in Rome, the European Endoscopy Training Centre, led by its Director, Prof. Guido Costamagna, is a comprehensive center fully devoted to teaching and training in digestive endoscopy. Over 130 trainees have successfully completed the short or long training courses in their unit since early 1992 which has included participants from all over the world, especially Italy, India, United States, and Japan. The aim of the education program is to focus on practical training. The large number of procedures carried out by Prof. G. Costamagna’s staff provides the opportunity for personalizing the program, especially given the possibility of training on computerized Olympus simulators and practicing various endoscopic procedures on ex-vivo models. In addition, they provide the Advanced Endoscopy Intensive Course with a tutor, a week-long program during which the trainee follows all the procedures and has personalized theory lessons with his/her tutor. The center has many future hands-on courses, including an Advanced Course on Polypectomy and Mucosectomy; Advanced Course on Enteroscopy; Advanced Course on Biliopancreatic Endoscopy; Advanced Course on Videocapsule Endoscopy, Barrx Academia Training Program; Advanced Course on GI bleeding; Advanced Course on Endoscopic Ultrasound, along with hands-on courses for nurses such as Advanced Course on Polypectomy and Mucosectomy Endoscopy; Advanced Course on Biliopancreatic Endoscopy; and Advanced Course on GI bleeding. The Rome Center is pleased to announce that the annual “XIV European Workshop on Therapeutic Digestive Endoscopy and Radiology—Live Video Demonstrations” (Endo Live Roma 2012) will take place in their unit this April 12 to 13, 2012.
