“Dig Deep and Reach Wide”: The Changing Politics of the Chinese Communist Party's Consultative Information System

AbstractSince the early 2010s, a low-profile “dig deep and reach wide” campaign led by local Chinese Communist Party (CCP) committees has unprecedently institutionalized and embedded academic opinions into the regimes’ decision-making processes. This research aims to deepen the existing understanding of the intricate relationship between players in the CCP's decision-making process by analysing the Party's deliberation on scholarly opinions through an academic lens. It argues that the local Party committees’ incentives to incorporate academic opinions into their information channels are not only a reaction to the central CCP's increasing need to “reach wide” for high-quality and critical policy proposals but are also a move to seek political endorsement from the central authorities. This process has transformed government–academic relations in China from a patron-client model to one of increasing interdependence in which Chinese academia has become increasingly attuned to the thinking and needs of the CCP.

A Dig Deep to Scout the Pharmacological and Clinical Facet of Garlic (Allium sativum)

: Garlic, Allium sativum L., is a culinary herb that has been employed medicinally since ancient times. Garlic has been regarded as the oldest of all cultivated plants. Various experimental as well as human studies have demonstrated that garlic is used in preventing the initiation and evolution of several ailments such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, cancer, microbial infections, arthritis, thrombosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. It can also act as an anti-oxidant. The preclinical toxicity study gives an impression that garlic is safe, although allergic reactions may occur. Recently, there has been systematic research regarding garlic, and positive results have been attained in healing many diseases. For centuries many countries of different civilizations and continents protected their populations and healed themselves using garlic. Therefore, there is an augmented necessity of investigation on the history of garlic for the sake of strengthening the ability of physicians and pharmacists to deal with the challenges arising in the provision of specialized facilities to serve mankind. The present review provides morphological, pharmacological, and toxicological insight regarding garlic. Further studies are required to explicate the therapeutic mode of action of garlic along with its potency, effectiveness, and clinical wellbeing in the management of different ailments.

Teaching Health Education Through the Development of Student Centered Video Assignment.

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which a student centered video assignment enhanced student learning about developing and teaching a health education plan designed to address a complex public health problem. The objectives of the assignment included (1) to explore a complex public health problem, (2) practice developing a corresponding health education plan, and (3) develop and fully execute a multimedia video to deliver high impact health education and or promotion to a diverse audience. The assignment referred to as the student centered video assignment was developed and piloted at Grand Valley State University and included students participating in a 200 level undergraduate introductory public health course. Students working in groups of 3, worked through the project in multiple phases with corresponding elements: problem identification, problem solving, plan development and the creation of the video, which included four primary elements: Dig Deeper, Think, Discuss, and Watch. Upon completion of the video, students were asked to voluntarily complete a 10-question survey about the benefits of learning through a video creation assignment. A total of 15 students completed the survey with the majority either strongly agreeing or agreeing that the video assignment enhanced learning. Survey results suggest that the assignment is beneficial and favored over other assignment types. Additionally, students reported that the project was beneficial in learning the concepts and competencies associated with public health education. Finally, students indicated that the creation of videos as a means to explore and apply course concepts was favored as an assignment format in future coursework. Instructor assessment of learning outcomes occurred through ongoing grading of and feedback on the project elements. The findings reveal that students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in real world problem solving, gained insight, perspective and scope through group discussion and collaboration, and felt that they learned new skills in created the video.

Entering into a Community-University Collaboration: Reflections from Dig Deep Farms

First paragraphs: We found a way to grow carrots, to look people straight in the eye and say, “That’s good community policing.” It was an unusual process that ultimately led the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in San Lean­dro, California to become one of the five commu­nity sites across the country participating in the Food Dignity Research project. Signing on to that project opened a new door for us to execute the vision we had for our work in community food production as part of community policing. The most beneficial aspect of it was to be with people who were like-minded and didn’t think we were crazy.  In 2009, elements of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and the leadership of the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League, Inc., (a nonprofit corporation established to leverage crime prevention efforts of the sheriff’s office), came to a conclusion: poverty, in all its various aspects, is a root driver of crime. Accessed 12 Feb. 2017.In this Ted-Ed Lesson Tom Mullaney presents a six minute animated film of the causes behind the French Revolution (Watch), an 8 question quiz (Think), additional information in order to foster critical discussions (Dig Deeper), and a forum to discuss the topic (Discuss). All of these sections can be accessed easily by a pinned menu along the right hand side of the page which follows an intuitive sequence. The animated film covers the situation in France from the ideologies that contributed to the start of the revolution to the First French Republic. The film concerns itself in large part with the questions and ideals that the revolution raised over two hundred years ago. While the interactive quiz, which requires a free account, focuses five questions on factual recall and has three short answer questions. Depending on the answer given, the quiz allows the audience to move on to the next question or directs them to try again or to view the film again. The design of the lesson page is minimalistic allowing for easy navigation and makes use of bright colours and obvious hyperlinks to inform the audience of additional available information held offsite. The synopsis of the French Revolution in the film is simplified in order to fit into a six minute film and should therefore be used as a supporting educational tool for students studying the French Revolution between grades 6 and 11. The age range is based on an advisor to teachers as the ‘Dig Deeper’ section may be unsuitable for younger audiences due to the level of critical thinking skills it requires, which enables it to be better suited to audiences in grades 10 and up. Creating Mathematical Lessons Using TED-Ed

TED-Ed is a free web-based video service tied to the well-known TED Talks. TED-Ed allows instructors to use videos on the website for students to view as homework assignments. It also has options for educators to build lessons around videos and include their own questions, resources, notes, and discussion board posts. Because the lessons have four sections—Watch, Think, Dig Deeper, and Discuss—students are given multiple opportunities to interact with the content and to reflect on their understanding. In the Discuss section, for example, students are able to respond to a question posted on a discussion board. TED-Ed gives educators the freedom to create personal lessons that can be used for homework, extension assignments, make-up quiz assignments, or projectbased instruction.

Students Dig Deep in the Mystery Investigation Soil Lab

The Mystery Soil Lab, a playful, inquiry-based laboratory project, is designed to develop students’ skills of inquiry, soil analysis, and synthesis of foundational concepts in soil science and soil ecology. Student groups are given the charge to explore and identify a “Mystery Soil” collected from a unique landscape within a 10-mile radius of our university by determining its soil formation and development history, associated plant community, and official taxonomic designation. Student groups have 4 consecutive weeks to conduct the lab assignment using observation and laboratory techniques. After 4 weeks, students present their findings by describing their process of inquiry, soil analysis results, and the conceptual reasoning behind their hypotheses using key course concepts. This project enhances students’ abilities to conduct iterative science using the scientific method, improves foundational knowledge of soil properties and processes, and builds students’ skills and confidence for a subsequent, independent soil ecology research project later in the semester.

Practicing food justice at Dig Deep Farms & Produce, East Bay Area, California: self-determination as a guiding value and intersections with foodie logics

This article describes Dig Deep Farms & Produce, a food justice organisation and urban farm working to stimulate local economic development, create jobs, and improve the quality and accessibility of food in Ashland and Cherryland in California's Bay Area. Their practices are based on self-determined values although they take a flexible, anti-essentialist approach to foodie logics, which are prominent and problematic in the Bay Area. The case study then examines specific practices and strategies, as well as intersections with foodie logics, in three arenas – values determination, strategic partnerships, and foodways – that help to cultivate food justice and highlights key characteristics of food justice work: emphasising self-determination and working to fundamentally change the economic and social conditions of food apartheid.

SEC XBRL Filing Requirements: An Instructional Case on Tagging Financial Statement Disclosures

ABSTRACT: On January 20, 2009, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released Rule 33-9002 for the phase-in of interactive data (SEC 2009a). An important component of this rule is the phase-in of detailed tagging of financial statement note disclosures. Tagging is the process of associating a taxonomy element with a financial statement concept for a particular context. While some of the filers have participated in the SEC Voluntary Filing Project and prepared instance documents tagged at the line item level most have not prepared detail-tagged notes to accompany the financial statements (SEC 2005; Choi et al. 2008). This case discusses the structure of disclosures, as they exist in the 2009 U.S. GAAP Taxonomy, followed by a discussion of dimensional extensions and concludes with an example of block and detailed disclosure tagging using Rivet Software’s Dragon Tag (Rivet 2009). The example uses the capitalized costs disclosure for Anadarko Petroleum, a publicly traded company. Following the example, the case requires students to block and detail tag the capitalized costs disclosure for Dig Deep, a hypothetical oil and gas company. By completing the case, students develop an understanding of the current U.S. GAAP taxonomy, skills relating to mapping and tagging processes, and make use of a commonly used XBRL taxonomy and instance document creation program.
