Measurement of AGN dust extinction based on the near-infrared flux variability of WISE data

ABSTRACT We present the measurement of the line-of-sight extinction of the dusty torus for a large number of obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on the reddening of the colour of the variable flux component in near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. We collected long-term monitoring data by Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) for 513 local AGNs catalogued by the Swift/BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) and found that the multi-epoch NIR flux data in two different bands (WISE W1 and W2) are tightly correlated for more than 90 per cent of the targets. The flux variation gradient (FVG) in the W1 and W2 bands was derived by applying linear regression analysis, and we reported that those for unobscured AGNs fall in a relatively narrow range, whereas those for obscured AGNs are distributed in a redder and broader range. The AGN’s line-of-sight dust extinction (AV) is calculated using the amount of the reddening in the FVG and is compared with the neutral hydrogen column density (NH) of the BASS catalogue. We found that the NH/AV ratios of obscured AGNs are greater than those of the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) and are distributed with a large scatter by at most two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, we found that the lower envelope of the NH/AV of obscured AGNs is comparable to the Galactic diffuse ISM. These properties of the NH/AV can be explained by increase in the NH attributed to the dust-free gas clouds covering the line of sight in the broad-line region.

Extinction in the Large Magellanic Cloud Bar around NGC 1854, NGC 1856, and NGC 1858

Abstract We report on the extinction properties in the fields around the clusters NGC 1854, NGC 1856, and NGC 1858 in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The color–magnitude diagrams of the stars in all these regions show an elongated red giant clump that reveals a variable amount of extinction across these fields, ranging from A V ≃ 0.2 to A V ≃ 1.9, including Galactic foreground extinction. The extinction properties nonetheless are remarkably uniform. The slope of the reddening vectors measured in the (V − I, V) and (B − I, B) color–magnitude planes is fully in line with the A V /E(B − V) ≃ 5.5 value found in the outskirts of 30 Dor. This indicates the presence of an additional gray extinction component in the optical requiring big grains to be about twice as abundant as in the diffuse Galactic interstellar medium (ISM). Areas of higher extinction appear to be systematically associated with regions of more intense star formation, as measured by the larger number of stars more massive than 8 M ⊙, thus making injection of big grains into the ISM by a SNII explosion the likely mechanism at the origin of the observed gray extinction component.

The Carina Nebula and Gum 31 Molecular Complex. III. The Distribution of the 1–3 GHz Radio Continuum across the Whole Nebula

Abstract We report the most detailed 1–3 GHz radio continuum emission map of the nearest region of massive-star formation, the Carina Nebula. As part of a large program with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have covered ∼12 deg2, achieving an angular resolution of ∼16″, representing the largest and most complete map of the radio continuum to date. Our continuum map shows a spectacular and complex distribution of emission across the nebula, with multiple structures such as filaments, shells, and fronts across a wide range of size scales. The ionization fronts have advanced far into the southern and northern region of the Galactic plane, as fronts are clearly detected at distances of ∼80 pc from the stellar clusters in the center. We estimated an ionization photon luminosity Q H = (7. 8 ± 0.8) × 1050 s−1, which corresponds to ∼85% of the total value obtained from stellar population studies. Thus, approximately 15% of the ionizing flux has escaped from the nebula into the diffuse Galactic interstellar medium. Comparison between radio continuum and the hydrogen atomic and molecular gas maps offers a clear view of the bipolar outflow driven by the energy released by the massive stellar clusters that also affects the fraction of molecular gas across the nebula. Comparison between 8 μm and 70 μm emission maps and the radio continuum reveals how the hot gas permeates through the molecular cloud; shapes the material into features such as pillars, small shells, and arc-like structures; and ultimately escapes.

Ultraviolet Extinction Properties of the 30 Dor Nebula and Interpreting Observations of Starburst Clusters

Abstract Recent investigations of the extinction law in 30 Dor and the Tarantula Nebula, at optical and near-infrared wavelengths, have revealed a ratio of total to selective extinction R V = A V /E(B − V) of about 4.5. This indicates a larger fraction of big grains than in the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). Possible origins include coalescence of small grains, small grain growth, selective destruction of small grains, and fresh injection of big grains. From a study of the ultraviolet extinction properties of three massive stars in the 30 Dor nebula (R139, R140, R145), observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer, we show that the excess of big grains does not come at the expense of small grains, which are still present and possibly even more abundant. Fresh injection of large grains appears to be the dominant mechanism. A process able to naturally account for this in environments such as the Tarantula nebula, where formation of massive stars has been ongoing for over ∼20 Myr, is the explosion of massive stars as SNe II. The ensuing change in the conditions of the ISM is only temporary, lasting less than ∼100 Myr, because shattering and shocks will eventually break and destroy the bigger grains. However, this is the only time when star-forming regions are detectable as such in starburst and high-redshift galaxies, and we highlight the complexity inherent in interpreting observations of star-forming regions in these environments. If the extinction characteristics are not known properly, any attempts to derive quantitative physical parameters are bound to fail.

The 15 273 Å diffuse interstellar band in the dark cloud Barnard 68

High obscuration of background stars behind dark clouds precludes the detection of optical diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) and hence our knowledge of DIB carriers in these environments. Taking advantage of the reduced obscuration of starlight in the near-infrared (NIR) we used one of the strongest NIR DIBs at 15 273 Å to probe the presence and properties of its carrier throughout the nearby interstellar dark cloud Barnard 68. We measured equivalent widths (EW) for different ranges of visual extinction AV, using VLT/KMOS H-band (1.46–1.85 μm) moderate-resolution (R ~ 4000) spectra of 43 stars situated behind the cloud. To do so, we fitted the data with synthetic stellar spectra from the APOGEE project and TAPAS synthetic telluric transmissions appropriate for the observing site and time period. The results show an increase of DIB EW with increasing AV. However, the rate of increase is much flatter than expected from the EW-AV quasi-proportionality established for this DIB in the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium. Based on a simplified inversion assuming sphericity, it is found that the volume density of the DIB carrier is 2.7 and 7.9 times lower than this expected average value in the external and central regions of the cloud, which have nH≃ 0.4 and 3.5 × 105 cm-3, respectively. Further measurements with multiplex NIR spectrographs should allow detailed modeling of such an edge effect of this DIB and other bands and help clarify its actual origin.

On the Optical-to-silicate Extinction Ratio as a Probe of the Dust Size in Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract Dust plays a central role in the unification theory of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Whether the dust that forms the torus around an AGN is micron-sized, like interstellar grains, or much larger, has a profound impact on correcting for the obscuration of the dust torus to recover the intrinsic spectrum and luminosity of the AGN. Here we show that the ratio of the optical extinction in the visual band ( ) to the optical depth of the 9.7 μm silicate absorption feature ( ) could potentially be an effective probe of the dust size. The anomalously lower ratio of / ≈ 5.5 of AGNs compared to that of the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium of / ≈ 18 reveals that the dust in AGN tori could be substantially larger than the interstellar grains of the Milky Way and those of the Small Magellanic Cloud, and therefore, one could expect a flat extinction curve for AGNs.

Hubble Tarantula Treasury Project – IV. The extinction law

We report on the study of interstellar extinction across the Tarantula nebula (30 Doradus), in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using observations from the Hubble Tarantula Treasury Project in the 0.3 - 1.6 micron range. The considerable and patchy extinction inside the nebula causes about 3500 red clump stars to be scattered along the reddening vector in the colour-magnitude diagrams, thereby allowing an accurate determination of the reddening slope in all bands. The measured slope of the reddening vector is remarkably steeper in all bands than in the the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium. At optical wavelengths, the larger ratio of total-to-selective extinction, namely Rv = 4.5 +/- 0.2, implies the presence of a grey component in the extinction law, due to a larger fraction of large grains. The extra large grains are most likely ices from supernova ejecta and will significantly alter the extinction properties of the region until they sublimate in 50 - 100 Myr. We discuss the implications of this extinction law for the Tarantula nebula and in general for regions of massive star formation in galaxies. Our results suggest that fluxes of strongly star forming regions are likely to be underestimated by a factor of about 2 in the optical.

The interstellar oxygen crisis, or where have all the oxygen atoms gone?

The interstellar medium (ISM) seems to have a significant surplus of oxygen which was dubbed as the "O crisis": independent of the adopted interstellar reference abundance, the total number of O atoms depleted from the gas phase far exceeds that tied up in solids by as much as ~160ppm of O/H. Recently, it has been hypothesized that the missing O could be hidden in micrometer-sized H2O ice grains. We examine this hypothesis by comparing the infrared (IR) extinction and far-IR emission arising from these grains with that observed in the Galactic diffuse ISM. We find that it is possible for the diffuse ISM to accommodate ~160ppm of O/H in micron-sized H2O ice grains without violating the observational constraints including the absence of the 3.1micron O-H absorption feature. More specifically, H2O ice grains of radii ~4micron and O/H = 160 ppm are capable of accounting for the observed flat extinction at ~ 3-8 micron and produce no excessive emission in the far-IR. These grains could be present in the diffuse ISM through rapid exchange of material between dense molecular clouds where they form and diffuse clouds where they are destroyed by photosputtering.

VERY LARGE INTERSTELLAR GRAINS AS EVIDENCED BY THE MID-INFRARED EXTINCTION

The sizes of interstellar grains are widely distributed, ranging from a few angstroms to a few micrometers. The ultraviolet (UV) and optical extinction constrains the dust in the size range of a couple hundredth micrometers to several submicrometers. The near and mid infrared (IR) emission constrains the nanometer-sized grains and angstrom-sized very large molecules. However, the quantity and size distribution of micrometer-sized grains remain unknown as they are gray in the UV/optical extinction and they are too cold and emit too little in the IR to be detected by IRAS, Spitzer, or Herschel. In this work, we employ the ~3-8 micron mid-IR extinction which is flat in both diffuse and dense regions to constrain the quantity, size, and composition of the micron-sized grain component. We find that, together with nano- and submicron-sized silicate and graphite (as well as PAHs), micron-sized graphite grains with C/H=137 ppm and a mean size of ~1.2 micron closely fit the observed interstellar extinction of the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium from the far-UV to the mid-IR as well as the near-IR to millimeter thermal emission obtained by COBE/DIRBE, COBE/FIRAS, and Planck up to lambda < 1000 micron. The micron-sized graphite component accounts for ~14.6% of the total dust mass and ~2.5% of the total IR emission.

Chemical probes of turbulence in the diffuse medium: the TDR model

Context. Tens of light hydrides and small molecules have now been detected over several hundreds sight lines sampling the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) in both the Solar neighbourhood and the inner Galactic disk. They provide unprecedented statistics on the first steps of chemistry in the diffuse gas. Aims. These new data confirm the limitations of the traditional chemical pathways driven by the UV photons and the cosmic rays (CR) and the need for additional energy sources, such as turbulent dissipation, to open highly endoenergetic formation routes. The goal of the present paper is to further investigate the link between specific species and the properties of the turbulent cascade in particular its space-time intermittency. Methods. We have analysed ten different atomic and molecular species in the framework of the updated model of turbulent dissipation regions (TDR). We study the influence on the abundances of these species of parameters specific to chemistry (density, UV field, and CR ionisation rate) and those linked to turbulence (the average turbulent dissipation rate, the dissipation timescale, and the ion neutral velocity drift in the regions of dissipation). Results. The most sensitive tracers of turbulent dissipation are the abundances of CH+ and SH+, and the column densities of the J = 3, 4, 5 rotational levels of H2 . The abundances of CO, HCO+, and the intensity of the 158 $\mu$m [CII] emission line are significantly enhanced by turbulent dissipation. The vast diversity of chemical pathways allows the independent determinations of free parameters never estimated before: an upper limit to the average turbulent dissipation rate, $\overline{\varepsilon}$ < 10$^{-23}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$ for $n_H$=20 cm$^{-3}$, from the CH+ abundance; an upper limit to the ion-neutral velocity drift, $u_{in}$ < 3.5 km s$^{-1}$, from the SH+ to CH+ abundance ratio; and a range of dissipation timescales, 100 < $\tau_V$ < 1000 yr, from the CO to HCO+ abundance ratio. For the first time, we reproduce the large abundances of CO observed on diffuse lines of sight, and we show that CO may be abundant even in regions with UV-shieldings as low as $5 \times 10^{-3}$ mag. The best range of parameters also reproduces the abundance ratios of OH, C2H, and H2O to HCO+ and are consistent with the known properties of the turbulent cascade in the Galactic diffuse ISM. Conclusions. Our results disclose an unexpected link between the dissipation of turbulence and the emergence of molecular richness in the diffuse ISM. Some species, such as CH+ or SH+, turn out to be unique tracers of the energy trail in the ISM. In spite of some degeneracy, the properties of the turbulent cascade, down to dissipation, can be captured through specific molecular abundances.

The extinction law inside the 30 Doradus nebula★

We have studied the interstellar extinction in a field of ~3' x 3' at the core of the 30 Doradus nebula, including the central R136 cluster, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Observations at optical and near-infrared wavelengths, obtained with the WFC3 camera on board the Hubble Space Telescope, show that the stars belonging to the red giant clump are spread across the colour-magnitude diagrams because of the considerable and uneven levels of extinction in this region. Since these stars share very similar physical properties and are all at the same distance, they allow us to derive the absolute extinction in a straightforward and reliable way. Thus we have measured the extinction towards about 180 objects and the extinction law in the range 0.3 - 1.6 micron. At optical wavelengths, the extinction curve is almost parallel to that of the diffuse Galactic interstellar medium. Taking the latter as a template, the value of Rv = 4.5 +/- 0.2 that we measure indicates that in the optical there is an extra grey component due to a larger fraction of large grains. At wavelengths longer than ~1 micron, the contribution of this additional component tapers off as lambda^-1.5, like in the Milky Way, suggesting that the nature of the grains is otherwise similar to those in our Galaxy, but with a ~2.2 times higher fraction of large grains. These results are consistent with the addition of "fresh" large grains by supernova explosions, as recently revealed by Herschel and ALMA observations of SN 1987A.

DUST IN ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI: ANOMALOUS SILICATE TO OPTICAL EXTINCTION RATIOS?

Dust plays a central role in the unification theory of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, little is known about the nature (e.g., size, composition) of the dust which forms a torus around the AGN. In this Letter we report a systematic exploration of the optical extinction (A_V) and the silicate absorption optical depth (\Delta\tau9.7) of 110 type 2 AGNs. We derive A_V from the Balmer decrement based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, and \Delta\tau9.7 from the Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph data. We find that with a mean ratio of A_V/\Delta\tau9.7 ~ 5.5, the optical-to-silicate extinction ratios of these AGNs are substantially lower than that of the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) for which A_V/\Delta\tau9.7 ~ 18.5. We argue that the anomalously low A_V/\Delta\tau9.7 ratio could be due to the predominance of larger grains in the AGN torus compared to that in the Galactic diffuse ISM.

WIDESPREAD ROTATIONALLY HOT HYDRONIUM ION IN THE GALACTIC INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM

We present new observations of the (6,6) and (9,9) inversion transitions of the hydronium ion toward Sagittarius B2(N) and W31C. Sensitive observations toward Sagittarius B2(N) show that the high, ~ 500 K, rotational temperatures characterizing the population of the highly-excited metastable H3O+ rotational levels are present over a wide range of velocities corresponding to the Sagittarius B2 envelope, as well as the foreground gas clouds between the Sun and the source. Observations of the same lines toward W31C, a line of sight that does not intersect the Central Molecular Zone, but instead traces quiescent gas in the Galactic disk, also imply a high rotational temperature of ~ 380 K, well in excess of the kinetic temperature of the diffuse Galactic interstellar medium. While it is plausible that some fraction of the molecular gas may be heated to such high temperatures in the active environment of the Galactic center, characterized by high X-ray and cosmic ray fluxes, shocks and high degree of turbulence, this is unlikely in the largely quiescent environment of the Galactic disk clouds. We suggest instead that the highly-excited states of the hydronium ion are populated mainly by exoergic chemical formation processes and temperature describing the rotational level population does not represent the physical temperature of the medium. The same arguments may be applicable to other symmetric top rotors, such as ammonia. This offers a simple explanation to the long-standing puzzle of the presence of a pervasive, hot molecular gas component in the central region of the Milky Way. Moreover, our observations suggest that this is a universal process, not limited to the active environments associated with galactic nuclei.

THE STRUCTURE, ORIGIN, AND EVOLUTION OF INTERSTELLAR HYDROCARBON GRAINS

Many materials have been considered for the carrier of the hydrocarbon absorption bands observed in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). In order to refine the model for ISM hydrocarbon grains, we analyze the observed aromatic (3.28, 6.2 {$μ$}m) and aliphatic (3.4 {$μ$}m) hydrocarbon absorption features in the diffuse ISM along the line of sight toward the Galactic center Quintuplet Cluster. Observationally, sp $^{2}$ bonds can be measured in astronomical spectra using the 6.2 {$μ$}m CC aromatic stretch feature, whereas the 3.4 {$μ$}m aliphatic feature can be used to quantify the fraction of sp $^{3}$ bonds. The fractional abundance of these components allows us to place the Galactic diffuse ISM hydrocarbons on a ternary phase diagram. We conclude that the Galactic hydrocarbon dust has, on average, a low H/C ratio and sp $^{3}$ content and is highly aromatic. We have placed the results of our analysis within the context of the evolution of carbon dust in the ISM. We argue that interstellar carbon dust consists of a large core of aromatic carbon surrounded by a thin mantle of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H), a structure that is a natural consequence of the processing of stardust grains in the ISM.

EVIDENCE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES IN THE SUBMILLIMETER DUST OPACITY

The submillimeter opacity of dust in the diffuse Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) has been quantified using a pixel-by-pixel correlation of images of continuum emission with a proxy for column density. We used three BLAST bands at 250, 350, and 500 \mu m and one IRAS at 100 \mu m. The proxy is the near-infrared color excess, E(J-Ks), obtained from 2MASS. Based on observations of stars, we show how well this color excess is correlated with the total hydrogen column density for regions of moderate extinction. The ratio of emission to column density, the emissivity, is then known from the correlations, as a function of frequency. The spectral distribution of this emissivity can be fit by a modified blackbody, whence the characteristic dust temperature T and the desired opacity \sigma_e(1200) at 1200 GHz can be obtained. We have analyzed 14 regions near the Galactic plane toward the Vela molecular cloud, mostly selected to avoid regions of high column density (N_H > 10^{22} cm^-2) and small enough to ensure a uniform T. We find \sigma_e(1200) is typically 2 to 4 x 10^{-25} cm^2/H and thus about 2 to 4 times larger than the average value in the local high Galactic latitude diffuse atomic ISM. This is strong evidence for grain evolution. There is a range in total power per H nucleon absorbed (re-radiated) by the dust, reflecting changes in the interstellar radiation field and/or the dust absorption opacity. These changes affect the equilibrium T, which is typically 15 K, colder than at high latitudes. Our analysis extends, to higher opacity and lower T, the trend of increasing opacity with decreasing T that was found at high latitudes. The recognition of changes in the emission opacity raises a cautionary flag because all column densities deduced from dust emission maps, and the masses of compact structures within them, depend inversely on the value adopted.

INVESTIGATING THE COSMIC-RAY IONIZATION RATE IN THE GALACTIC DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM THROUGH OBSERVATIONS OF H+3

Observations of H3+ in the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) have led to various surprising results, including the conclusion that the cosmic-ray ionization rate (zeta_2) is about 1 order of magnitude larger than previously thought. The present survey expands the sample of diffuse cloud sight lines with H3+ observations to 50, with detections in 21 of those. Ionization rates inferred from these observations are in the range (1.7+-1.3)x10^-16 s^-1<zeta_2<(10.6+-8.2)x10^-16 s^-1 with a mean value of zeta_2=(3.5^+5.3_-3.0)x10^-16 s^-1. Upper limits (3 sigma) derived from non-detections of H3+ are as low as zeta_2<0.4x10^-16 s^-1. These low upper-limits, in combination with the wide range of inferred cosmic-ray ionization rates, indicate variations in zeta_2 between different diffuse cloud sight lines. A study of zeta_2 versus N_H (total hydrogen column density) shows that the two parameters are not correlated for diffuse molecular cloud sight lines, but that the ionization rate decreases when N_H increases to values typical of dense molecular clouds. Both the difference in ionization rates between diffuse and dense clouds and the variation of zeta_2 among diffuse cloud sight lines are likely the result of particle propagation effects. The lower ionization rate in dense clouds is due to the inability of low-energy (few MeV) protons to penetrate such regions, while the ionization rate in diffuse clouds is controlled by the proximity of the observed cloud to a site of particle acceleration.

The deep 3.4 μm interstellar absorption feature toward the IRAS 18511+0146 cluster

Context. An absorption feature at 3.4 μm, widely observed in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM), is produced by aliphatic hydrocarbon dust. In the local ISM there is in general a linear correlation between the 3.4 μm optical depth and the visual extinction AV . However, the 3.4 μm optical depth toward the young stellar object IRAS 18511+0146, the highest found in the local diffuse ISM apart from the Galactic centre lines of sight, is three times higher than predicted from the most likely value for the distance of the object, the extinction-distance relation for the Galactic diffuse ISM, and the value of AV /τ3.4 in the Galactic disk. Aims. IRAS 18511+0146 is associated with a small cluster of stars. We have obtained spectra of it as well as two other cluster members in order to verify the unusually high 3.4 μm optical depth toward IRAS 18511+0146 and test for patchiness in the foreground diffuse cloud material. Methods. Spectra covering 2.9–4.1 μm were recorded using the near-infrared imager/spectrograph (NIRI) at the Gemini North telescope. Results. After subtraction of the superimposed 3.47 μm band, produced in dense interstellar gas associated with the cluster, we have determined optical depths of 0.06–0.08 for the 3.4 μm absorption on the three lines of sight. We discuss the distance and extinction to the IRAS 18511+0146 cluster and possible interpretations of the high optical depth of the 3.4 μm absorption. Conclusions. The most probable distance to the IRAS 18511+0146 cluster is 3.9 kpc. Two different interpretations of the high observed τ3.4 are then possible. (i) The AV to distance ratio toward the cluster is approximately the one observed on average in the Galactic diffuse ISM, in which case AV ∼ 7a ndτ3.4 in this direction is three times higher than predicted by the usual AV /τ3.4 observed in local diffuse ISM. (ii) The visual extinction in the direction of the IRAS 18511+0146 cluster is higher (i.e. 15–20 mag), probably due to a diffuse cloud associated with the cluster, resulting in a high value of τ3.4. In either case, the high τ3.4 makes this cluster a unique and valuable line of sight for studying the Galactic hydrocarbon dust.

Observations and modeling of the dust emission from the H2-bright galaxy-wide shock in Stephan's Quintet

Spitzer Space Telescope observations revealed powerful mid-infrared (mid-IR) H2 rotational line emission from the Stephan's Quintet (SQ) X-ray emitting large scale shock associated with a collision between two galaxies. Because H2 forms on dust grains, the presence of H2 is physically linked to the survival of dust, and we expect some dust emission to come from the molecular gas. To test this interpretation, IR observations and dust modeling are used to identify and characterize the thermal dust emission from the shocked molecular gas. The spatial distribution of the IR emission allows us to isolate the faint PAH and dust continuum emission associated with the molecular gas in the SQ shock. We model the spectral energy distribution (SED) of this emission, and fit it to Spitzer observations. Faint PAH and dust continuum emission are detected in the SQ shock, outside star-forming regions. The 12/24um flux ratio in the shock is remarkably close to that of the diffuse Galactic interstellar medium, leading to a Galactic PAH/VSG abundance ratio. However, the properties of the PAH emission spectrum in the shock differ from that of the Galaxy, which may suggest an enhanced fraction of large and neutrals PAHs. The IR SED is consistent with the expected emission from dust associated with the warm (>150K) H2 gas, heated by a UV radiation field of intensity comparable to that of the solar neighborhood, in agreement with GALEX UV observations. The presence of PAHs and dust grains in the high-speed (1000km/s) galaxy collision suggests that dust survives. We propose that the dust that survived destruction was in pre-shock gas at densites larger than a few 0.1cm-3, which was not shocked at velocities larger than 200km/s. [abridged]

COMMISSION 21: LIGHT OF THE NIGHT SKY

Commission 21 consists of IAU members and consultants with expertise and interest in the study of the light of the night sky and its various diffuse components, at all accessible electromagnetic frequencies. In cosmic distance scales, the subjects of Commission 21 range from airglow and tropospheric scattering in Earth's atmosphere, through zodiacal light in the solar system, including thermal emission from interplanetary dust, integrated starlight in the Milky Way galaxy, diffuse galactic light due to dust scattering in the galactic diffuse interstellar medium, thermal emissions from interstellar dust and free free emission from ionized interstellar gas, to various diffuse extragalactic background sources, including the cosmologically important cosmic microwave background (CMB). Observations of the diffuse night sky brightness at any frequency typically include signals from several of these sources, and it has been the historic mandate of Commission 21 to foster the necessary collaboration of experts from the different astronomical sub-disciplines involved.

Spectropolarimetry of the 3.4 μm Absorption Feature in NGC 1068

In order to test the silicate-core/organic-mantle model of galactic interstellar dust, we have performed spectropolarimetry of the 3.4 μm C–H bond stretch that is characteristic of aliphatic hydrocarbons, using the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, as a bright, dusty background source. Polarization calculations show that if the grains in NGC 1068 had the properties assigned by the core-mantle model to dust in the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium (ISM), they would cause a detectable rise in polarization over the 3.4 μm feature. No such increase is observed. We discuss modifications to the basic core-mantle model, such as changes in grain size or the existence of additional nonhydrocarbon aligned grain populations, that could better fit the observational evidence. However, we emphasize that the absence of polarization over the 3.4 μm band in NGC 1068—and, indeed, in every line of sight examined to date—can be readily explained by a population of small, unaligned carbonaceous grains with no physical connection to the silicates.
