Elastic cross section data for precursor molecules used in low-temperature plasmas: Sn(CH3)4 and Ga(CH3)3

Tetramethyltin [Sn(CH3)4] and trimethylgallium [Ga(CH3)3] are important source molecules of Sn and Ga atoms which are used in manufacturing techniques involving low-temperature plasmas. Accurate numerical modeling of plasma environments requires a comprehensive set of electron scattering cross sections by these precursor molecules. Here, we report the elastic integral, differential, and momentum transfer cross sections for electron collisions with Sn(CH3)4 and Ga(CH3)3 for energies ranging from 0 to 30 eV. Our calculations were carried out with the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with pseudopotentials and considered two levels of approximation in our calculations, namely static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization. We identified three shape resonances for Sn(CH3)4 and one clear low-lying resonance for Ga(CH3)3. The low-energy behavior of the s-wave cross section and eigenphase was investigated and, for both molecules, we found evidence of a Ramsauer–Townsend (RT) minimum and a virtual state. Our results indicate that negative differential conductivity would occur in a gas composed of Sn(CH3)4. On the other hand, this effect would be suppressed in a gas of Ga(CH3)3 due to an overlap between the position of the RT minimum and the shape resonance in the momentum-transfer cross section.

Elastic and electronically inelastic scattering of electrons by 2H-pyran and 4H-pyran molecules

We report on elastic and electronically inelastic integral and differential cross sections for electron collisions with the 2H-pyran and 4H-pyran molecules. The scattering calculations were performed with the Schwinger multichannel method and aimed to (i) investigate the formation of resonant states, (ii) assign and compare the resonance spectrum of these isomers, and (iii) evaluate the influence of multichannel coupling effects upon elastic and electronically inelastic scattering processes. In the elastic channel, calculations carried out at the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization levels of approximation revealed the presence of three shape resonances for each one of the pyran isomers. For the 2H-pyran molecule, we found two resonances related to the formation of long-lived π∗ anion states that are centered at 1.38 or 1.32 eV (π1∗) and 4.54 or 4.46 eV (π2∗), depending on the polarization model used in the calculations, and a broad resonance of σ∗ character located around 9.50–10.00 eV. The resonances observed in the case of the 4H-pyran molecule have the same character with centers located at 2.08 or 2.20 eV (π1∗), 3.92 or 3.94 eV (π2∗), and 9.24–10.00 or 9.50–10.00 eV (σ∗), depending on the polarization model used in the calculations. The difference in the position of the resonances when comparing the results for the 2HPY and 4HPY molecules is explained in terms of the inductive effect. The electronically inelastic calculations employed the minimal orbital basis for single configuration interactions strategy and considered up to 129 open channels for 2H-pyran and up to 249 open channels for 4H-pyran. According to these levels of channel coupling, we computed integral and differential cross sections for the excitation from the ground state to the 13A′, 23A′, 11A′′, and 21A′ electronic excited states of 2H-pyran and to the 13B2, 13A1, 11B1, and 11B2 electronic excited states of 4H-pyran. As a general trend, for both isomers, we observed that the magnitude of the cross sections is reduced as more channels are considered open in the scattering calculations. We also obtained the total ionization cross sections for 2H- and 4H-pyran using the binary-encounter-Bethe model, which next was summed to the elastic and electronically inelastic cross sections to estimate the total cross sections. As a whole, these results correspond to the first set of cross sections for these targets published to date. Such an effort is aimed at addressing the demand of different communities regarding the expansion of the cross section data set for electron collisions with molecules of technological, environmental, and biological relevance, a need that has been raised by several reviews on the subject.

Electromagnetic interaction models for Monte Carlo simulation of protons and alpha particles

Electromagnetic interactions of protons and alpha particles are modeled in a form that is suitable for Monte Carlo simulation of the transport of charged particles. The differential cross section (DCS) for elastic collisions with neutral atoms is expressed as the product of the DCS for collisions with the bare nucleus and a correction factor that accounts for the screening of the nuclear charge by the atomic electrons. The screening factor is obtained as the ratio of the DCS for scattering of the projectile by an atom with a point nucleus and the parameterized Dirac–Hartree–Fock–Slater (DHFS) electron density, calculated from the eikonal approximation, and the Rutherford DCS for collisions with the bare point nucleus. Inelastic collisions, which cause electronic excitations of the material, are described by means of the plane-wave Born approximation, with an empirical simple model of the generalized oscillator strength (GOS) that combines several extended oscillators with resonance energies and strengths determined from the atomic configurations and from the empirical mean excitation energy of the material. The contributions from inner subshells are renormalized to agree with realistic ionization cross sections calculated numerically from the DHFS self-consistent model of atoms by means of the plane-wave Born approximation. The resulting DCS allows analytical random sampling of individual hard inelastic interactions.

Low-Energy Electron and Positron Scattering by para-Difluorobenzene.

The Schwinger multichannel method is employed in calculations of the elastic integral and differential cross sections for collisions of low-energy electrons and positrons with para-difluorobenzene (1,4-C6H4F2). The present calculations involving electron scattering have been performed using both static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization levels of approximation. Our results indicate the presence of three resonances of π*-character in the low-energy region and a fourth resonance, of σ*-character, at higher energy levels. With respect to the positron scattering, the calculations were conducted using the static plus polarization approximation at three different polarization levels. The present calculated electron and positron cross sections show a reasonable agreement with the total cross sections measured by Makochekanwa et al. (J. Phys. B, 2004, 37, 1841). It is also important to highlight that our computed integral cross section for electron scattering indicates the presence of a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum, while the integral cross section for positron scattering indicates the presence of a virtual state.

Elastic Neutrino–Atom Scattering as a Probe of Neutrino Millicharge and Magnetic Moment

Neutrino scattering on a target at low-energy transfer is one of the basic tools for searching for neutrino electromagnetic properties. We consider the effects of the neutrino millicharge and magnetic moment on the atomic recoil spectrum in elastic neutrino–atom scattering. The results of our calculations of differential cross sections for elastic collisions of tritium neutrinos with the H, 2H, 3He, and 4He atomic targets show that the corresponding experiments can achieve sensitivity to the indicated neutrino electromagnetic characteristics by orders of magnitude better than the available measurements of elastic neutrino–electron and neutrino–nucleus collisions.

Elastic Electron Scattering by Diborane(6) and Diborane(4) Molecules

We present integral, differential, and momentum transfer cross sections for elastic electron collisions with the two most stable isomers of the B2H4 molecule, hereafter referred to as isomer I (C2v symmetry) and isomer II (D2d symmetry), and with the B2H6 molecule (D2h symmetry). The isomer I of B2H4 and the B2H6 molecule are known for their electrodeficiency in the "three-center two-electron" (3c-2e) bond, a region in which a hydrogen atom occupies a bridged position between two non-hydrogen atoms. The cross sections were computed by using the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with norm-conserving pseudopotentials, and the scattering calculations were carried out in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization levels of approximation for energies from 0.1 to 50 eV. We discuss the presence of shape resonances in the scattering cross sections. We also made a direct comparison among the cross sections of these three targets.

Slowdown and Heating of Interstellar Neutral Helium by Elastic Collisions Beyond the Heliopause.

Direct sampling of interstellar neutral (ISN) atoms close to the Sun enables studies of the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) around the heliosphere. The primary population of ISN helium atoms has, until now, been assumed to reflect the pristine VLISM conditions at the heliopause. Consequently, the atoms observed at 1 au by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) were used to determine the VLISM temperature and velocity relative to the Sun, without accounting for elastic collisions with other species outside the heliopause. Here, we evaluate the effect of these collisions on the primary ISN helium population. We follow trajectories of helium atoms and track their collisions with slowed plasma and interstellar hydrogen atoms ahead of the heliopause. Atoms typically collide a few times in the outer heliosheath, and only ~1.5% of the atoms are not scattered at all. We use calculated differential cross sections to randomly choose scattering angles in these collisions. We estimate that the resulting primary ISN helium atoms at the heliopause are slowed down by ~0.45 km s-1 and heated by ~1100 K compared to the pristine VLISM. The resulting velocity distribution is asymmetric and shows an extended tail in the antisunward direction. Accounting for this change in the parameters derived from IBEX observations gives the Sun's relative speed of 25.85 km s-1 and temperature of 6400 K in the pristine VLISM. Finally, this paper serves as a source of the differential cross sections for elastic collisions with helium atoms.

Elastic positron-uracil scattering cross sections

We report elastic integral and differential cross sections for positron collisions with uracil (${\mathrm{C}}_{4}{\mathrm{H}}_{4}{\mathrm{N}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$) for impact energies up to 10 eV. The cross sections were calculated employing the Schwinger multichannel (SMC) method in the static plus polarization approximation. The Born-closure procedure was applied to account for the long-range potential due to the permanent dipole moment of uracil. The present results are compared with experimental and theoretical data available in the literature, showing an overall good agreement with previously reported results. We also applied our differential cross sections to provide a correction to the total cross-section measurements by Anderson et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 141, 034306 (2014)] in order to account for the lack of angular resolution in the apparatus used by these authors. Besides, we applied a simple model employed by Franz and Gianturco [Phys. Rev. A 88, 042711 (2013)] to estimate the temperature effects on the uracil cross section. In particular, the level of agreement of the SMC differential cross sections as compared with the experimental findings is encouraging.

Single pencil beam benchmark of a module for Monte Carlo simulation of proton transport in the PENELOPE code.

PENH is a recently coded module for simulation of proton transport in conjunction with the Monte Carlo code PENELOPE. PENELOPE applies class II simulation to all type of interactions, in particular, to elastic collisions. PENH uses calculated differential cross sections for proton elastic collisions that include electron screening effects as well as nuclear structure effects. Proton-induced nuclear reactions are simulated from information in the ENDF-6 database or from alternative nuclear databases in ENDF format. The purpose of this work is to benchmark this module by simulating absorbed dose distributions from a single finite spot size proton pencil beam in water. Monte Carlo simulations with PENH are compared with simulation results from TOPAS Monte Carlo (v3.1p2) and RayStation Monte Carlo (v6). Different beam models are examined in terms of mean energy and energy spread to match the measured profiles. The phase-space file is derived from experimental measurements. Simulated absorbed dose distributions are compared to experimental data obtained with the ionization chamber array MatriXX 2D detector (IBA Dosimetry) in a water tank. The experiments were conducted with a clinical IBA pencil beam scanning dedicated nozzle. In all simulations a Fermi-Eyges phase-space representation of a single finite spot size proton pencil beam is used. In general, there is a good agreement between simulated results and experimental data up to a distance of 3cm from the central axis. In the core region (region where the dose is more than 10% of the maximum dose) PENH shows, overall, the smallest deviations from experimental data, with the largest radial rms (root mean square) smaller than 0.2. The results achieved by TOPAS and RayStation in that region are very close to those of PENH. For the halo region, that is the area of the dose distribution outside the core region reaching down to 0.01% of the maximum intensity, the largest rms achieved by TOPAS is always smaller than 0.5, yielding better results than the rest of the codes. The physics modeling of the PENELOPE/PENH code yields results consistent with measurements in the dose range relevant for proton therapy. The discrepancies between PENH appearing at distances larger than 3cm from the central-beam axis are accountable to the lack of neutron simulation in this code. In contradistinction, TOPAS has a better agreement with experimental data at large distances from the central-beam axis because of the simulation of neutrons.

Axion radiation in the zero frequency limit

I derive a universal factor accounting for the soft axion radiation in the zero frequency limit, dressing any differential cross sections for arbitrary multifermion collisions. The universal soft expression can be factorized from the bare differential cross sections of hard emissions. The soft factorization accounts for all leading-order $O({\ensuremath{\omega}}^{2})$ contributions of the soft axion bremsstrahlung. Intriguingly, despite completely different physical origins, we find many similarities with the $O({\ensuremath{\omega}}^{2})$ radiation in gravity, from the subsubleading soft graviton theorem.

Electron and Positron Scattering by the Formamide Molecule.

We report calculated elastic integral, differential, and momentum transfer cross sections for electron and positron collisions with the formamide (HCONH2) molecule, for impact energies up to 10 eV. We have used the Schwinger multichannel method in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization approximation for collisions of electrons and the static plus polarization approximation for collisions of positrons. The Born-closure procedure was applied to account for the long-range potential due to the permanent dipole moment of formamide. We obtained the well-characterized π* shape resonance located at around 2.38 eV, which belongs to the A″ symmetry of the Cs point group. Our integral and differential cross sections for collisions of electrons were compared with the data available in the literature and showed a good qualitative agreement. To the best of our knowledge, no experimental and theoretical data are currently available for positron-formamide collision, so our present cross sections were compared with the cross sections of formic acid, which is also polar and is isoeletronic to formamide.

Nuclear effects in proton transport and dose calculations

Interactions of protons with nuclei are modeled in a form that is suitable for Monte Carlo simulation of proton transport. The differential cross section (DCS) for elastic collisions of protons with neutral atoms is expressed as the product of the Rutherford DCS, which describes scattering by a bare point nucleus, and two correction factors that account for the screening of the nuclear charge by the atomic electrons and for the effect of the structure of the nucleus. The screening correction is obtained by considering the scattering of the projectile by an atom with a point nucleus and the atomic electron cloud described by a parameterization of the Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Slater self-consistent electron density. The DCS for scattering by this point nucleus atom is calculated by means of the eikonal approximation. The nuclear correction to the DCS for elastic collisions is calculated by conventional partial-wave analysis with a global optical-model potential that describes the interaction with the bare nucleus. Inelastic interactions of the projectile with target nuclei are described by using information from data files in ENDF-6 format, which provide cross sections, multiplicities, and angle-energy distributions of all reaction products: light ejectiles (neutrons, protons, …), gammas, as well as recoiling heavy residuals. These interaction models and data have been used in the Monte Carlo transport code penh, an extension of the electron-gamma code penelope, which originally accounted for electromagnetic interactions only. The combined code system penh/penelope performs simulations of coupled electron-photon-proton transport. A few examples of simulation results are presented to reveal the influence of nuclear interactions on proton transport processes and on the calculation of dose distributions from proton beams.

Elastic Scattering of Slow Positrons by Pyrazine.

We report elastic integral and differential cross sections for positron collisions with pyrazine (C4H4N2), for energies up to 10 eV. The cross sections were calculated with the Schwinger multichannel method in the static plus polarization approximation. Our computed elastic integral cross section indicates the presence of a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum and a bound state in the Ag scattering symmetry. In the absence of results in the literature on collisions of positrons with pyrazine, we compare the present results with results for pyrimidine and benzene molecules available in the literature.

Radial: A Fortran subroutine package for the solution of the radial Schrödinger and Dirac wave equations

The Fortran subroutine package radial for the numerical solution of the Schrödinger and Dirac wave equations of electrons in central potentials V(r) is described. The considered potentials are such that the function V(r)≡rV(r) is finite for all r and tends to constant values when r→0 and r→∞. This includes finite-range potentials as well as combinations of Coulomb and finite-range potentials. The function V(r) used in the numerical calculation is the natural cubic spline that interpolates a table of values provided by the user. The radial wave equations are solved by using piecewise exact power series expansions of the radial functions, which are summed up to the prescribed accuracy so that truncation errors can be completely avoided. The radial subroutines compute radial wave functions, eigenvalues for bound states and phase shifts for free states. Specific subroutines are also provided for computing the radial functions and phase shifts for free states of complex optical potentials having a finite-range absorptive imaginary part. The solution subroutines are accompanied by example main programs, as well as with specific programs that perform calculations relevant in atomic, nuclear, and radiation physics (the self-consistent solution of the Dirac–Hartee–Fock–Slater equations for neutral atoms and positive ions, and the calculation of cross sections for elastic scattering of high-energy electrons and positrons by atoms and of nucleons by nuclei). The distribution package includes a detailed manual with a description of the basic physics and the mathematical formulas implemented in the subroutines. Energy dependent parity-pair behavior in NO + He collisions.

Colliding molecules behave fundamentally differently at high and low collision energies. At high energies, a collision can be described to a large extent using classical mechanics, and the scattering process can be compared to a billiard-ball-like collision. At low collision energies, the wave character of the collision partners dominates, and only quantum mechanics can predict the outcome of an encounter. It is, however, not so clear how these limits evolve into each other as a function of the collision energy. Here, we investigate and visualize this evolution using a special feature of the differential cross sections for inelastic collisions between NO radicals and He atoms. The so-called "parity-pair" transitions have similar differential cross sections at high collision energies, whereas their cross sections are significantly different in the quantum regime at low energies. These transitions can be used as a probe for the quantum nature of the collision process. The similarity of the parity-pair differential cross sections at high energies could be theoretically explained if the first-order Born approximation were applicable. We found, however, that the anisotropy of the NO-He interaction potential is too strong for the first-order Born approximation to be valid, so higher-order perturbations must be taken into account.

Absolute cross section measurements for the scattering of low- and intermediate-energy electrons from PF3. I. Elastic scattering.

We report absolute elastic differential cross sections (DCSs) for electron collisions with phosphorus trifluoride, PF3, molecules (e- + PF3) in the impact energy range of 2.0-200 eV and over a scattering angle range of 10°-150°. Measured angular distributions of scattered electron intensities were normalized by reference to the elastic DCSs of He. Corresponding integral and momentum-transfer cross sections were derived by extrapolating the angular range from 0° to 180° with the help of a modified phase-shift analysis. In addition, due to the large dipole moment of the considered molecule, the dipole-Born correction for the forward scattering angles has also been applied. As a part of this study, independent atom model calculations in combination with screening corrected additivity rule were also performed for elastic and inelastic (electronic excitation plus ionization) scattering using a complex optical potential method. Rotational excitation cross sections have been estimated with a dipole-Born approximation procedure. Vibrational excitations are not considered in this calculation. Theoretical data, at the differential and integral levels, were found to reasonably agree with the present experimental results. Furthermore, we explore the systematics of the elastic DCSs for the four-atomic trifluoride molecules of XF3 (X = B, N, and P) and central P-atom in PF3, showing that, owing to the comparatively small effect of the F-atoms, the present angular distributions of elastic DCSs are essentially dominated by the characteristic of the central P-atom at lower impact energies. Finally, these quantitative results for e- - PF3 collisions were compiled together with the previous data available in the literature in order to obtain a cross section dataset for modeling purposes. To comprehensively describe such a considerable amount of data, we proceed by first discussing, in this paper, the vibrationally elastic scattering processes whereas vibrational and electronic excitation shall be the subject of our following paper devoted to inelastic collisions.

Electron scattering by the hydrocarbons C4H6,C5H8 , and C6H10

We report calculated elastic integral and differential cross sections for electron collisions with the hydrocarbons 1,3-butadiene (${\mathrm{C}}_{4}{\mathrm{H}}_{6}$), 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene (${\mathrm{C}}_{5}{\mathrm{H}}_{8}$), and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene (${\mathrm{C}}_{6}{\mathrm{H}}_{10}$) for impact energies up to 15 eV. Our calculations were performed with the Schwinger Multichannel Method with pseudopotentials, in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization approximations. These molecules differ for the presence of one methyl group, in the case of ${\mathrm{C}}_{5}{\mathrm{H}}_{8}$, and two methyl groups, in the case of ${\mathrm{C}}_{6}{\mathrm{H}}_{10}$ in substitution of one and two hydrogen atoms in ${\mathrm{C}}_{4}{\mathrm{H}}_{6}$, respectively (methylation effect). For the polar molecule 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, we included the Born closure procedure in order to account for the long-range potential. We found two ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{*}$ shape resonances in the integral cross section of each one of the molecules studied. The present results are also compared with the experimental values for the resonances positions and with total cross sections available in the literature. In particular, we show that the minimum in the total cross section of ${\mathrm{C}}_{5}{\mathrm{H}}_{8}$ located at around 1.6 eV and assigned by the authors as a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum is, actually, a valley between the two ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{*}$ shape resonances. Also for the ${\mathrm{C}}_{5}{\mathrm{H}}_{8}$ molecule, the enhancement in the total cross section below 1.6 eV is the tail of the low-lying shape resonance and not an effect due to its permanent dipole moment, as suggested by the authors. We discuss the influence of the methylation effect in the shape and magnitude of the elastic cross sections and also in the location of the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{*}$ shape resonances of these hydrocarbons.

State-to-State Differential Cross Sections for Inelastic Collisions of NO Radicals with para-H2 and ortho-D2.

We present state-to-state differential cross sections for collisions of NO molecules (X2Π1/2, j = 1/2f) with para-H2 and ortho-D2 molecules, at a collision energy of 510 and 450 cm–1, respectively. The angular scattering distributions for various final states of the NO radical are measured with high resolution using a crossed molecular beam apparatus that employs the combination of Stark deceleration and velocity map imaging. Rotational rainbows as well as diffraction oscillations are fully resolved in the scattering images. The observed angular scattering distributions are in excellent agreement with the cross sections obtained from quantum close-coupling scattering calculations based on recently computed NO–H2 potential energy surfaces, except for excitation of NO into the j = 7/2f channel. For this particular inelastic channel, a significant discrepancy with theory is observed, despite various additional measurements and calculations, at present, not understood.

Electron collisions with F2CO molecules

In this paper we present elastic differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections for electron collisions with carbonyl fluoride $({\mathrm{F}}_{2}\mathrm{CO})$ molecules for the incident electron's energy from 0.5 eV to 20 eV. The Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials was employed to obtain the cross sections in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization approximations. The present results were compared with the available data in the literature, in particular, with the results of Kaur, Mason, and Antony [Phys. Rev. A 92, 052702 (2015)] for the differential, total, and momentum-transfer cross sections. We have found a ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{*}$ shape resonance centered at 2.6 eV in the ${B}_{1}$ symmetry and other resonance, in the ${B}_{2}$ symmetry, located at around 9.7 eV. A systematic study of the inclusion of polarization effects was performed in order to have a well balanced description of this negative-ion transient state. The effects of the long-range electric dipole potential were included by the Born closure scheme. Electronic structure calculations were also performed to help in the interpretation of the scattering results, and associate the transient states to the unoccupied orbitals.
