We continue to invest enormous sums in the production, purchase and use of vehicles, but we are as yet not prepared to face the bill to accommodate these vehicles in a civilized manner. This paper examines the relationship of the vehicle to its environment in terms of planning. Examples of environmental planning studies are discussed, together with the relationship of different types of road with different environments. The opportunities provided by the new cities for the accommodation of vehicles and transport systems are outlined. The conclusion is drawn that in existing cities there will be a continual conflict between traffic and environmental requirements which can be eliminated in the new cities by careful planning.
