Mediator Effects of Cognitive Load on Association between Self-Efficacy and Task Load in Intensive Care Unit Nurses

Aims. To explore the mediating effect of cognitive load on the relationship between self-efficacy and task load among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Background. Studies related to ICU nurses’ self-efficacy, cognitive load, and task load are noteworthy but limited. Methods. A total of 253 ICU nurses from three tertiary hospitals in Beijing were recruited and investigated by the Chinese version of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and an instrument for Measuring Different Types of Cognitive Load (MDT-CL) scales. SPSS 25.0 was used for Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis and mediation effect analysis using Model 4 in PROCESS (5,000 resamples). Results. Mediation analysis indicated that a partial mediating effect of extraneous cognitive load between self-efficacy and task load among ICU nurses was −0.707 (95% CI: −0.940, −0.504), accounting for 51.64% of the total effect. Conclusion. This study suggests that enhancing ICU nurses’ self-efficacy can be a potential strategy to decrease extraneous cognitive load and task load. Implications for Nursing Management. Nursing administrators should actively implement intervention strategies based on influencing the task load pathway of ICU nurses to ensure they can provide safe and high-quality nursing services.

Evaluation of tracheostomy suctioning procedure among nursing and respiratory therapy students: wearable manikin vs. standard manikin.

This study aims to evaluate cognitive load (CL), emotional levels (EL), and stress levels (SL) of students when using a wearable manikin vs. a standard manikin for tracheostomy suctioning (TS). This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Subjects were recruited by email. Subjects completed a baseline demographics questionnaire, then they were randomized into two groups: wearable manikin group (WMG) or standard manikin group (SMG). For the WMG, an actor simulated a patient by wearing the device. In phase I, both groups were educated on how to perform TS by video and offered hands-on practice. Then I put through a tracheostomy suctioning clinical simulation and completed a post sim-survey. In phase II, the same survey was repeated after encountering a real patient as part of their clinical rotation. A total of 30 subjects with a mean age 26.0 ± 5.5 years participated. 20 (66.7%) were respiratory care students and 10 (33.3%) were nursing students. In the WMG, the median stress level dropped significantly post phase II compared to post phase I [2(1,4) vs.3(1,5), p = 0.04]. There were no significant changes in median CL, confidence, and satisfaction levels between post phase II and post phase I (p > 0.05). In the SMG, the satisfaction level increased significantly post phase II compared to post phase I [5(4,5) vs.4(2,5), p = 0.004], but there were no significant changes in CL, SL, and confidence levels between post phase I and phase II. There was no significant difference in mean EL scores over time and these changes did not differ by group. Subjects in the WMG showed a higher mean competency score than those in the SMG (85.5 ± 13.6 vs. 78.5 ± 20.8, p = 0.14, Cohen's d = 0.4), yet not significant. Our results showed that the WMG is beneficial in helping bridge the gap of learning TS from the sim setting to the real-world clinical setting. More studies with higher sample size and use of other CL scales that assesses the different types of CL are needed to validate our findings.

Impact of delirium intervention on cognitive load among nurses in the intensive care unit: A multi-centre cluster randomized controlled trial.

High cognitive load in nurses is a common problem in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, it remains unclear what different types of cognitive load the ICU nurses have experienced during the implementation of delirium interventions. To describe the characteristics and explore the effect of implementing a delirium intervention on the cognitive load of nurses working in the ICU. A cluster-randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted. Six ICUs were randomized in a 1:1 ratio, and eligible nurses from these units provided either a delirium bundle intervention in addition to usual care (27 nurses) or usual care alone. An instrument was used to measure different types of cognitive load (MDT-CL), assessing intrinsic, extraneous and germane cognitive load. The repeated measures analysis of variance was used to detect between-group differences. Among these nurses, significant between-group differences were identified in terms of their overall (P < 0.001), intrinsic (P < 0.001) and extraneous (P < 0.001) cognitive load. There was no significant change observed in the germane cognitive load (P = 0.489) in the delirium intervention group. It is important to understand how the implementation of a delirium intervention affects different types of cognitive load in nurses, in order that tailored strategies can be applied to reduce cognitive load in ICU nurses.

Development and Validation of a Theory-Based Questionnaire to Measure Different Types of Cognitive Load

According to cognitive load theory, learning can only be successful when instructional materials and procedures are designed in accordance with human cognitive architecture. In this context, one of the biggest challenges is the accurate measurement of the different cognitive load types as these are associated with various activities during learning. Building on psychometric limitations of currently available questionnaires, a new instrument for measuring the three types of cognitive load—intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load—is developed and validated relying on a set of five empirical studies. In Study 1, a principal component analysis revealed a three-component model which was subsequently confirmed using a confirmatory factor analysis (Study 2). Finally, across three experiments (Studies 3–5), the questionnaire was shown to be sensitive to changes in cognitive load supporting its predictive validity. The quality of the cognitive load questionnaire was underlined by satisfactory internal consistencies across all studies. In sum, the proposed questionnaire can be used in experimental settings to measure the different types of cognitive load in a valid and reliable manner. The construction and validation process of the questionnaire has also shown that the construct germane cognitive load remains controversial concerning its measurement and theoretical embedding in cognitive load theory.

How is mobile task performance different? The case of information processing without information search

ABSTRACT Studies have repeatedly highlighted the inferior performance of mobile users relative to that of personal computer (PC) users, largely due to lower usability and higher search costs arising from the use of smaller screens. Research, however, has yet to substantively address the situation in which mobile users perform tasks that require information processing without information search, implying an absence of device-related performance differences in such situations. Against this background, we propose that mobile task performance may be inferior in cognitive tasks, even when usability and search costs cannot be used as explanatory mechanisms, due to the predisposition of users to process information differently on different devices. We provide evidence in support of this proposition in two experiments. We find that mobile users perform worse (less accurately) than PC users do when the tasks demand high cognitive load. By contrast, when the tasks demand low cognitive load, performance is comparable across devices. We observe this interaction effect for different types of cognitive load – intrinsic and extraneous – despite their opposite effects on task performance. In so doing, we extend existing explanations of mobile task performance and shed light on the boundary conditions under which mobile use negatively affects task performance.

Emotional and cognitive effects of learning with computer simulations and computer videogames

AbstractBackgroundPrevious work has identified that the benefits of learning with videogames and learning from simulations. However, recent meta‐analytic work has also identified that little research directly compares learning with videogames and learning with simulations.ObjectivesThis study examines two learning technologies and their corresponding pedagogical approaches and compares them for learning the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics topic of electric charges.MethodsParticipants were randomly assigned to either an intervention using a computer simulation for inquiry‐based learning or a computer videogame for game‐based learning. Their learning gains, self‐reported emotional state and experienced cognitive load were recorded.ResultsWe found that both learning environments improved conceptual learning, and there were no statistically significant differences between the two conditions. Participants did perceive the game‐based environment to be more engaging as well as more frustrating. We also found that cognitive load did not predict learning—however, different types of cognitive load correlated with different emotions. Overall, participants in both conditions were engaged and perceived understanding of the topic, yet they also experienced both confusion and task‐unrelated thoughts.TakeawaysWhen learning with simulations and videogames, educators need to align intended learning outcomes with pedagogical approaches enabled by technology. In addition, a balance between principles of multimedia learning to reduce or prevent extraneous processing, and scaffolding to reduce negative effects of learning with technology, need to be considered.

Validation of Cognitive Load During Inquiry-Based Learning With Multimedia Scaffolds Using Subjective Measurement and Eye Movements.

Subject-method barriers and cognitive load (CL) of students have a particular importance in the complex learning process of scientific inquiry. In this work, we investigate the valid measurement of CL as well as different scaffolds to reduce it during experimentation. Specifically, we examine the validity of a subjective measurement instrument to assess CL [in extraneous cognitive load (ECL), intrinsic cognitive load, and germane cognitive load (GCL)] during the use of multimedia scaffolds in the planning phase of the scientific inquiry process based on a theoretical framework of the CL theory. The validity is analyzed by investigating possible relationships between causal (e.g., cognitive abilities) and assessment (e.g., eye-tracking metrics) factors in relation to the obtained test scores of the adapted subjective measurement instrument. The study aims to elucidate possible relationships of causal factors that have not yet been adequately investigated in relation to CL. Furthermore, a possible, still inconclusive convergence between subjective test scores on CL and objectively measured indicators will be tested using different eye-tracking metrics. In two studies (n=250), 9th and 11th grade students experimentally investigated a biological phenomenon. At the beginning of the planning phase, students selected one of four multimedia scaffolds using a tablet (Study I: n=181) or a computer with a stationary eye-tracking device (Study II: n=69). The subjective cognitive load was measured via self-reports using a standardized questionnaire. Additionally, we recorded students’ gaze data during learning with the scaffolds as objective measurements. Besides the causal factors of cognitive-visual and verbal abilities, reading skills and spatial abilities were quantified using established test instruments and the learners indicated their representation preference by selecting the scaffolds. The results show that CL decreases substantially with higher grade level. Regarding the causal factors, we observed that cognitive-visual and verbal abilities have a significant influence on the ECL and GCL in contrast to reading skills. Additionally, there is a correlation between the representation preference and different types of CL. Concerning the objective measurement data, we found that the absolute fixation number is predictive for the ECL. The results are discussed in the context of the overall methodological research goal and the theoretical framework of CL.

Learning From Instructional Videos: Learner Gender Does Matter; Speaker Gender Does Not.

One crucial design characteristic of auditory texts embedded in instructional videos is the speaker gender, which has received some attention from empirical researcher in the recent years. Contrary to the theoretical assumption that similarity between the speaker’s and the learner’s gender might positively affect learning outcomes, the findings have often been mixed, showing null to contrary effects. Notwithstanding the effect on the outcomes, a closer look at how the speaker’s gender and speaker–learner similarities further determine cognitive variables, such as different cognitive load types, is overdue. Moreover, on the part of the learner, the role of situational interest in the learning topic that might be gender related has been neglected so far. Therefore, this study explored the role of speaker and learner gender and their interaction regarding learning outcomes. We broaden our perspective by investigating the effects of gender-related differences concerning situational interest in the topic being taught and by determining different types of cognitive load. In a 2 (female/male speaker) × 2 (female/male learner) within- and between-subject design, 95 students learned about female and male human sexual maturity with an instructional video containing auditory explanations. Analysis results indicate that speaker gender and speaker–learner gender similarity had no impact on learning gains, situational interest, and cognitive load types. However, the results demonstrate that learner’s gender, especially for the topic of female sexual maturity, matters the most in line with the assessed variables. Compared with males, females had higher learning gains, reported higher interest in the topic, and invested more germane cognitive resources. Thus, instructional designers may want to consider learner gender-dependent interest and how it can be triggered when creating videos with auditory explanations.

Subjective Measure of Cognitive Load Depends on Participants’ Content Knowledge Level

Cognitive load theory (CLT) posits the classic view that cognitive load (CL) has three-components: intrinsic, extraneous and germane. Prior research has shown that subjective ratings are valid measures of different CL subtypes. To a lesser degree, how the validity of these subjective ratings depends on learner characteristics has not been studied. In this research, we explored the extent to which the validity of a specific set of subjective measures depends upon learners’ prior knowledge. Specifically, we developed an eight-item survey to measure the three aforementioned subtypes of CL perceived by participants in a testing environment. In the first experiment (N = 45) participants categorized the eight items into different groups based on similarity of themes. Most of the participants sorted the items consistent with a threefold construct of the CLT. Interviews with a subgroup (N = 13) of participants provided verbal evidence corroborating their understanding of the items that was consistent with the classic view of the CLT. In the second experiment (N = 139) participants completed the survey twice after taking a conceptual test in a pre/post setting. A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed a two-component structure for the survey when the content knowledge level of the participants was initially lower, but a three-component structure when the content knowledge of the participants was improved to a higher level. The results seem to suggest that low prior knowledge participants failed to differentiate the items targeting the intrinsic load from those measuring the extraneous load. In the third experiment (N = 40) participants completed the CL survey after taking a test consisting of problems imposing different levels of intrinsic and extraneous load. The results reveals that how participants rated on the CL survey was consistent with how each CL subtype was manipulated. Thus, the CL survey developed is decently effective measuring different types of CL. We suggest instructors to use this instrument after participants have established certain level of relevant knowledge.

Making an Effort Versus Experiencing Load

In cognitive load theory (CLT), the role of different types of cognitive load is still under debate. Intrinsic cognitive load (ICL) and germane cognitive load (GCL) are assumed to be highly interlinked but provide different perspectives. While ICL mirrors the externally given task affordances which learners experience passively, germane resources are invested by the learner actively. Extraneous affordances (ECL) are also experienced passively. The distinction of passively experienced load and actively invested resources was inspired by an investigation where we found differential effects of a learning strategy training, which in fact resulted in reduced passive load and increased actively invested effort. This distinction is also mirrored in the active and passive forms for effort in German language: “es war anstrengend” (it has been strenuous) vs. “ich habe mich angestrengt” (I exerted myself). In two studies, we analyzed whether we could distinguish between these active and passive aspects of load by using these phrases and how this distinction relates to the three-partite concept of CLT. In two instructional design studies, we included the active and passive items into a differentiated cognitive load questionnaire. We found the factor structure to be stable, with the passive item loading on the ICL factor and the active item loading on the GCL factor. We conclude that it is possible to distinguish between active and passive aspects of load and that further research on this topic could be constructive, especially for learning tasks where learners act in a more self-regulated way and learner characteristics are taken into account.

Signaling in virtual reality influences learning outcome and cognitive load

Virtual reality (VR) learning environments are highly visual and need instructional aid to help the learner. Presenting too much visual information can impair selection and organization processes by overloading the learner's cognitive capacity. Signaling could support these processes by highlighting relevant information. In this study we used signals in form of textual annotations. Research on multimedia design principles provides evidence that such signals can foster learning, but we address the question whether the signaling principle is also applicable in a virtual reality learning environment. Particularly, we investigate the effects on learning by measuring different learning outcomes as well as different types of cognitive load, i.e., extraneous, and germane load in a between-subjects design. Participants (n = 107) were randomly assigned to a group with or without annotations in a VR learning environment. We assumed that learning material with integrated annotations lead to higher learning outcome, lower extraneous cognitive load (ECL), and higher germane cognitive load (GCL) than the control group. Results show that annotations improved learners' recall performance and GCL compared to a control group but had no effects on deeper levels of processing and on ECL. This indicates that annotations in VR can help learners to process the information on a recall level, but not due to a relief in ECL. When VR learning environments should support learners in recall and at the same time foster GCL, then adding annotations can be an appropriate approach.

An augmented reality learning system for Japanese compound verbs: study of learning performance and cognitive load

To address the difficulties related to acquiring Japanese compound verbs, which lack the clarity of verb combinations and the opacity of compound verb meanings, we designed and developed an augmented reality (AR) learning system based on image schema and AR animations. We investigated the effects of the AR-based language learning system developed in this study on the learning performance and cognitive load of an AR learning system and paper-based image schema materials. This study also examined the correlation between learning performance and cognitive load. Learners of these two learning methods had significantly improved performance on post-tests. Especially, regarding the retention of knowledge, the AR learning system was more effective. However, there was no significant difference in the perceived cognitive loads between the two learning methods. It is also found that the learning performance of the two learning methods was related to the perceived different types of cognitive load.

Collaborative group work and the different types of cognitive load

ABSTRACT From a cognitive load perspective, successful collaborative learning occurs if groups achieve their goals, and if each member processes information in a way that contributes to individual learning. This research looked at group work among postgraduate STEM students in South Korea (N = 55) to see if successful collaborative learning and individual contribution were associated with greater individual course success. Results showed that students who participated in successful group work showed higher levels of germane cognitive load, which contributes to learning, and also earned higher scores on the final research paper for the course. Implications of this study highlight the need for synchronous collaborative writing to be used as a way of sharing ideas and knowledge to produce higher levels of individual understanding and quality writing.

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the instrument for measuring different types of cognitive load (MDT‐CL)

AimTo translate the instrument for measuring different types of cognitive load (MDT‐CL) into Chinese and assess the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the MDT‐CL.BackgroundThe MDT‐CL is needed for hospital administrators to identify which nursing staff are prone to high cognitive load and to provide tailored interventions for specific types of cognitive load.MethodsThe MDT‐CL was translated into Chinese using forward and back translation, cultural adaptation and pilot tested. The reliability and validity of the instrument were assessed with intensive care unit (ICU) nurses in three tertiary hospitals in China.ResultsA total of 222 ICU nurses were recruited. The scale‐content validity index of the Chinese version of the MDT‐CL was 0.966. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that all the goodness‐of‐fit indicators were acceptable. Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.818. Test–retest reliability was 0.785.ConclusionsThe Chinese version of the MDT‐CL is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating the cognitive load of ICU nurses in China.Implications for nursing managementThe validated Chinese version of the MDT‐CL is a feasible, quantitative tool for evaluating different types of cognitive load in busy clinical practice, suggesting significant clinical application value.

Pacing in Serious Games: Exploring the Effects of Presentation Speed on Cognitive Load, Engagement and Learning Gains

Background. To determine the optimal speed of computer-paced serious games, the interplay of cognitive load variables and game engagement variables can serve as combined criteria. Intervention. In order to test the effects of higher or lower game speeds on different types of cognitive load and engagement, the FRESH FOOD RUNNER game was developed, which teaches the harvest seasons of different fruits and vegetables. Method. In this study, N=58 6th grade primary school students are randomly assigned to play the serious game FRESH FOOD RUNNER at different speeds. Pre-and post-tests are used to assess learning gains, in combination with rating scales for different types of cognitive load and game engagement. Results. Results show that highest learning gains and lowest levels of extraneous cognitive load are prevalent at medium speed settings, which are neither too fast nor too slow. A similar pattern is apparent for student ratings of game engagement. Discussion and Conclusion. In consequence, learning gains, cognitive load and engagement variables can be regarded as suitable criteria to determine the optimal speed of serious games.

Cognitive Load During Online Complex Problem-Solving in a Teacher Training Context

Online courses are becoming ubiquitous and increasingly tend to use authentic learning tasks as the driving force for teaching and learning. Nevertheless, designing online courses that incorporate real– world tasks is more challenging as these problems require more cognitive processes (van Merriënboer Sluijsmans, 2009). This phenomenon can be explained by Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) introduced by Sweller (1994). CLT distinguishes three types of cognitive load: intrinsic, extraneous and germane load. The level of intrinsic load is assumed to be determined by the level of element interactivity. An element can be a definition, concept, formula and procedure that needs to be or has been learned. Extraneous load is mainly imposed by instructional procedures that are suboptimal, whereas germane load refers to the learners’ working memory resources available to deal with the complexity of the task or learning material (Sweller, 2010). Accordingly, the experienced cognitive load is mainly dependent of students’ prior knowledge. Nevertheless, cognitive load can also be determined by students’ motivation (Feldon, Franco, Chao, Peugh, Maahs-Fladung, 2018; Verhoeven, Schnotz, Paas, 2009). As a consequence, when designing an online course for complex tasks, it is important to understand how the different types of cognitive load are affected by students’ cognitive and motivational characteristics. Therefore, in the current study, a high and low complex task was developed relating to the learning and teaching of geometry. The complexity of the task was manipulated by increasing the element interactivity for the high complex task (Sweller, 2010). In the low complex task one element was questioned each time, and consequently students had to apply a single rule, formula or procedure. By contrast, the high complex task was based on a real-life context (e.g., teaching geometry), and had higher element interactivity. Subsequently, the high complex task required learners to engage in a series of cognitive activities such as analysing, decision making, implementing and evaluating, while holding several procedures and rules in mind. Accordingly, we expected the high complex task to induce more cognitive load. The same amount of support containing the same content, was provided during both tasks. Consequently, in this context, students could take initiative in diagnosing their learning needs by identifying appropriate support. Since students could consult different amounts of support, this self-directed learning strategy could also influence the perceived cognitive load (van Merriënboer Sluijsmans, 2009). Accordingly, the amount of consulted support was also taken into account during the analyses. The aim of the study was twofold. First, as a manipulation check of task complexity, we investigated differences in the experienced cognitive load while solving a high and low complex task. Secondly, we examined whether students’ cognitive and motivational characteristics influence the different types of perceived cognitive load, when taking into account the amount of consulted support for both the high and low complex task. A multivariate approach was chosen to assess the degree of interplay that may exist among students’ cognitive, motivational characteristics, consultation of support and the different types of perceived cognitive load. By conducting this study, we wanted to gain insight into whether the cognitive, motivational characteristics and consultation of support influence the perceived cognitive load differently for a high and low complex task.

Application of Cognitive Load Theory in Accounting Education

The field of accounting education has recently adopted cognitive load theory (CLT), which originated in educational psychology. There are several empirical studies inspired by CLT which have demonstrated the practical implications of this theory. Although some articles have addressed the relationship of CLT and accounting education, none have considered the integration of the design principles and provide practical guidelines accounting educators may follow. Three techniques are described, by which educators may do so: (a) minimising instructional procedures that splits the attention of students, (b) tailoring instruction to levels of accounting students' expertise, and (c) minimising problem-solving exercises and utilising more worked examples. A detailed examination of these 3 techniques indicates that they assist students’ understanding of accounting. These techniques are not applicable to all accounting learners but are more appropriate to accounting students learning a specific topic for the first time than to expert learners (e.g., final year students who have been introduced to the accounting topic). All 3 guidelines are based on the importance CLT places on the human cognitive architecture, particularly our knowledge of working and long-term memory, schema construction and automation, and the different types of cognitive load affecting the students to absorb and retain information.

Learner, Patient, and Supervisor Features Are Associated With Different Types of Cognitive Load During Procedural Skills Training: Implications for Teaching and Instructional Design.

Cognitive load theory, focusing on limits of the working memory, is relevant to medical education; however, factors associated with cognitive load during procedural skills training are not well characterized. The authors sought to determine how features of learners, patients/tasks, settings, and supervisors were associated with three types of cognitive load among learners performing a specific procedure, colonoscopy, to identify implications for procedural teaching. Data were collected through an electronically administered survey sent to 1,061 U.S. gastroenterology fellows during the 2014-2015 academic year; 477 (45.0%) participated. Participants completed the survey immediately following a colonoscopy. Using multivariable linear regression analyses, the authors identified sets of features associated with intrinsic, extraneous, and germane loads. Features associated with intrinsic load included learners (prior experience and year in training negatively associated, fatigue positively associated) and patient/tasks (procedural complexity positively associated, better patient tolerance negatively associated). Features associated with extraneous load included learners (fatigue positively associated), setting (queue order positively associated), and supervisors (supervisor engagement and confidence negatively associated). Only one feature, supervisor engagement, was (positively) associated with germane load. These data support practical recommendations for teaching procedural skills through the lens of cognitive load theory. To optimize intrinsic load, level of experience and competence of learners should be balanced with procedural complexity; part-task approaches and scaffolding may be beneficial. To reduce extraneous load, teachers should remain engaged, and factors within the procedural setting that may interfere with learning should be minimized. To optimize germane load, teachers should remain engaged.

Cognitive load theory: Practical implications and an important challenge.

The field of medical education has adopted a wide variety of theories from other fields. A fairly recent example is cognitive load theory, which originated in educational psychology. Several empirical studies inspired by cognitive load theory and reviews of practical implications of cognitive load theory have contributed to guidelines for the design of medical education. Simultaneously, several research groups have developed instruments for the measurement of cognitive load in a medical education context. These developments notwithstanding, obtaining evidence for different types of cognitive load remains an important challenge. Therefore, the aim of this article is twofold: to provide medical educators with three key guidelines for the design of instruction and assessment and to discuss several fundamental issues in the remaining challenges presented by different types of cognitive load. The guidelines revolve around minimizing cognitive activity that does not contribute to learning, working with specific learning goals in mind, and appreciating the multifaceted relation between learning and assessment. Key issues around the types of cognitive load include the context in which learning occurs, the continued use of single-item mental effort ratings, and the timing of cognitive load and learning outcome measurements.

Differentiating Different Types of Cognitive Load: a Comparison of Different Measures

Recent studies about learning and instruction use cognitive load measurement to pay attention to the human cognitive resources and to the consumption of these resources during the learning process. In order to validate different measures of cognitive load for different cognitive load factors, the present study compares three different methods of objective cognitive load measurement and one subjective method. An experimental three-group design (N = 78) was used, with exposure to seductive details (extraneous cognitive load factor), mental animation tasks (germane cognitive load factor), or the basic learning instruction (control group). Cognitive load was measured by the rhythm method (Park and Brunken 2015), the index of cognitive activity (ICA) (Marshall 2007), and the subjective ratings of mental effort and task difficulty (Paas 1992). Eye-tracking data were used to analyze the attention allocation and as an indicator for cognitive activity. The results show a significantly higher cognitive load for the mental animation group in contrast to the control and the seductive detail group, indicated by rhythm method and subjective ratings, as well as a higher cognitive activity, indicated by eye tracking. Furthermore, the mental animation group shows significantly higher comprehension performance in contrast to the seductive detail group and significantly higher transfer performance in contrast to the control group. The ICA values showed no significant differences in cognitive load. The results provide evidence for the benefits of combining eye-tracking analysis and the results of cognitive load ratings or secondary task performance for a direct and continuous cognitive load assessment and for a differentiating access to the single cognitive load factors.
