Influence of modes of communication on public participation in Laikipia County, Kenya

This study investigates the impact of communication modes on enhancing public participation in Laikipia County, Kenya. The objective of the study was to examine how different communication channels affect citizen involvement in government-led development processes. Public participation is crucial for fostering democratic governance and equitable development. However, in Kenya, achieving substantial public engagement has been challenging, partly due to the use of ineffective communication channels. This study hypothesizes that such channels hinder meaningful public participation. To explore this, a hybrid analytics method was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, to assess how various communication modes influence public engagement. The research utilized a dataset comprising 384 respondents collected between June and July 2024. Data analysis, completed in July 2024, revealed several that different modes of communication significantly affect the level of public participation, influencing how well citizens receive and comprehend information about development initiatives. Channels that facilitate clearer, more direct communication leads to higher levels of understanding and engagement among the public. Effective communication channels are essential for fostering meaningful public involvement, as they impact citizens' responses and behaviours towards development activities. These findings underscore the importance of utilizing effective communication strategies to enhance public participation in development processes. The study contributes to a better understanding of how communication methods can be optimized to support democratic engagement and improve development outcomes in Kenya.

Genetic Algorithm for Mode Selection in Device-to-Device (D2D) Communication for 5G Cellular Networks

The widespread use of smart devices and mobile applications is leading to a massive growth of wireless data traffic. With the rapidly growing of the customers’ data traffic demand, improving the system capacity and increasing the user throughput have become essential concerns for the future fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication network. In a conventional cellular system, devices are not allowed to directly communicate with each other in the licensed cellular spectrum and all communications take place through the base stations (BS) and core network. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication refers to a technology that enables devices to communicate directly with each other, without sending data to the base station and the core network. This technology has the potential to improve system performance, enhance the user experience, increase spectral efficiency, reduce the terminal transmitting power, reduce the burden of the cellular network, and reduce end to end latency. In D2D communication user equipment’s (UEs) are enabled to select among different modes of communication which are defined based on the frequency resource sharing. Dedicated mode where D2D devices directly transmit by using dedicated resources. Reuse mode where D2D devices reuse some resources of the cellular network. Outband mode where D2D communication uses unlicensed spectrum (e.g. the free 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band or the 38 GHz millimetre wave band) where cellular communication does not take place. Cellular mode where the D2D communication is relayed via gNode B (gNB) and it is treated as cellular users. In this work, the target was to reach the optimal mode selection policy and genetic algorithm method was used with the objective of maximizing the total fitness function. Optimal mode selection policy was presented and analysed amongst cellular, dedicated, reused and outband mode. In the present study of mode selection issues in D2D enabled networks, genetic algorithm was proposed for the case when the cellular user equipment (UE) moves in the network. Quality of service (QoS) parameters, mobility parameters and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method were used to define the mode selection algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed genetic algorithm, a study of the convergence of the algorithm and the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) was done.

In light of the rapid technological advancements and their undeniable role in professional and business communication, Peter Hartley, Helena Knapton, and Susie Marriott took a step towards developing the third edition of ‘Professional and Business Communication’, encompassing 16 chapters on the complexities of professional communication with a focus on adapting to external influences in the constantly-changing business world. Its main themes revolve around communication in organizational settings, the impact of technology, different modes of communication, dealing with workplace change, and planning for professional development in the future. While the book may have minor imperfections, an analysis of its content proves how perfectly it fulfills its intended aims with regard to learning applicability and practicality for its target audience. The overall multifaceted approach towards communication, considering its dynamic nature, is the next issue highlighted in the present review.

THE EVOLUTION OF NURSING HOME COMMUNICATION WITH RESIDENT FAMILIES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract Nursing homes experienced numerous challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Among these challenges was ensuring appropriate and effective communication with friends and family members of residents, particularly in light of visitation restrictions. Using qualitative data from 156 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with administrators of 40 nursing homes across the US from July 2020 through December 2021, challenges and solutions to communicating effectively with resident families are characterized. Findings include three themes: 1. Administrators identified best practices regarding the frequency of communicating with families. Particularly early in the pandemic and when visitation was restricted, families expressed a desire for very frequent updates regarding resident well-being and COVID-19. Administrators reported the challenges of balancing family expectations regarding information with their capacity to meet those expectations. 2. Administrators discussed different modes of communication used with families. Existing systems of mass-communication were expanded and new processes were developed. 3. Administrators described challenges in determining the appropriate content to communicate and navigating changing policies. While nursing home staff were required to share data on COVID-19 outbreaks, administrators shared lessons learned regarding specificity of information to be shared, and how they balanced required infection control information with pleasant updates regarding residents and their activities. Strategies identified by administrators may be informative for efforts to promote effective communication for both general day-to-day updates and for future emergency or pandemic crises.

The aticle presents several different ways of popularizing scientific knowledge. It is not scientific in the sense that it is not a report on a systematic study of the literature or empirical research. It is a tool room: a repository we can turn to in search of tools to help us solve a problem. The article offers three tools. The first is a typology of forms of participation in science. I treat the typology as a tool, too, because defining a problem can be seen as part of the problem-solving process. It's important to understand that there are different forms of science popularization and citizen science participation: each form requires different competencies and will work in a different situation. It's also important to understand that there is a difference between science communication (i.e., what scientists do as part of their work) and science communication (i.e., dissemination of scientific results outside of science). These are two different modes of communication and require separate skills. The second tool is a set of heuristics that may be of interest to those already parsing science communication, but having difficulty communicating science. The last tool is a proposal for a science popularizer's checklist. It is based on my own experience. Anyone interested in science communication can check this tool in action, modify it for themselves, or create their own list, which I encourage you to do.

Communicating scientific uncertainties

Abstract. Communicating a message of scientific uncertainty to a general audience is difficult because laypeople usually lack the conceptual tools to understand uncertainty (e.g., quantification methods). In addition, uncertainties can lead to mistrust and can be misused to prevent or delay radioactive waste management. On the proposed poster, we report the results of an experimental study (N=177) that investigated preferences for and trust in different visualizations of simulation results and tested different modes of communication (verbal, numerical, and visual/graphical). The participants processed three different parts, namely (1) the variation in the form of presentation of a scientific result, (2) the variation in the sender/source of a scientific result in numerical format, and (3) a direct comparison of two representations of simulation results (deterministic and probabilistic). Besides socio-demographics, we used items to check for the potential impact of numeracy and verbal skills, the need for a cognition concept, and questions on science in general, as well as the acceptance of a potential deep-ground repository. The dependent variable in each part was the degree of trust in the scientific validity of the information. For an example result, see Fig. 1. Clear influences of the non-dependent variables are only evident to a limited extent. Women rate their numerical abilities less highly than men do. There is no difference in verbal skills. The latter variable is also not explanatory, while numerical ability is relevant for the choice of the probabilistic variant and the corresponding trust rating in Experiment 3. The most striking result is that the attitude towards a deep geological repository for high-level nuclear waste (HLW; degree of acceptance) is the decisive parameter in all experimental conditions. The oral presentation will focus on another challenge of uncertainty communication, namely unquantifiable model uncertainties. In a repository, these may arise from the heterogeneity of the host rock. One of these potential uncertainties may be an undetected fault parallel in the drift axis in clayey host rocks. At the Konrad site, an anchor failure in an infrastructure drift resulted from such a fault. To deal with this kind of uncertainty, a certain kind of flexibility is needed to react to such events. The talk should initiate a discussion on the importance of communicating these potential uncertainties and on the impact of these uncertainties on the repository program.

The use of teleorthodontics during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond – perspectives of patients and providers

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted dental services, resulting in reduced staff availability, limited appointments, and some dental clinics even being forced to close their doors. Despite these challenges, the need for dental consultants remained present, particularly in emergency situations. One area of orthodontics that had seen a surge in demand during the pandemic is Teleorthodontics. With the help of Teleorthodontics, orthodontic consultations, assessments, and even treatment monitoring could be conducted remotely, making it a safe and convenient option for patients during those challenging times.AimThis survey aimed to evaluate the acceptance of patients and their orthodontists on the use of different modes of communication through Teleorthodontics during the COVID-19 pandemic and their willingness to continue using this in the future.MethodsAn online survey instrument in Qualtrics was distributed to orthodontic patients at the University of Illinois, Chicago. The survey was available on a rolling basis for up to 6 months. A total number of 364 partients voluntarily participated in the survey. The Faculty and Residents were also asked to participate in a survey through recruitment via their UIC email addresses.ResultsAccording to our survey, both patients and providers showed acceptance of Teleorthodontics and have used it in different forms during orthodontic treatment. The application is easy-to-use, convenient, and not at all time-consuming. Overall satisfaction with using this application was recorded at 92%, with 66% of patients stating that it saved them time by eliminating the need to travel to the orthodontic clinic. 30% of providers found that the interaction with patients using Teleorthodontics was a positive experience and would recommend it in future.ConclusionTeleorthodontics has shown great potential, particularly in follow-up cases, and holds promise as a valuable tool for online remote dental consultations in the future.

Male nuptial display colour and vocalisation appear to signal independent information in the whirring tree frog

When different modes of communication are used in combination and for example convey visual and acoustic information, they form a multimodal signal. Frogs are best known for using acoustic communication, but many species also use visual or colour signals, some of which are dynamic, and may be combined with acoustic signals. In this context, the question of whether these two modes of communication reinforce the same message or offer different information is poorly understood. Male whirring tree frogs, Litoria revelata, use a multimodal signal during courtship, which combines a vocalisation and dynamic sexual dichromatism, with nuptial display colours shifting from brown or grey to bright yellow. Here, we examined the properties of the advertisement call and nuptial colour of vocalising male whirring tree frogs and tested whether the two signals were likely to reinforce each other or convey independent information. We found only weak associations between elements of male colouration and vocalisations, suggesting that advertisement calls and nuptial colour do not reinforce each other and that the signals may instead convey different information.Significance statementDynamic nuptial colour and vocalisation in combination is a relatively common multimodal signal in frogs but is unstudied. We looked for relationships between properties of colour and vocalisation in an Australian tree frog to explore whether the two sensory modes formed backup signals or multiple messages. We did not find predictive relationships between nuptial colour and vocalisation, supporting the multiple messages hypothesis and suggesting that nuptial colour is not necessarily directed at females for the purposes of mate attraction, potentially differing from the assumed function of the vocalisation. Our study is also the first to formally characterise aspects of dynamic sexual dichromatism in the whirring tree frog (Litoria revelata) and the first to describe the advertisement call of this species in its southern distribution. Whilst we do not specifically address the function of dynamic sexual dichromatism in this species, our findings do not contradict the existing literature in respect to it being a male-male directed signal.

Preferences for Electronic Modes of Communication Among Older Primary Care Patients: Cross-sectional Survey.

Health information delivered via daily modes of communication such as email, text, or telephone reportedly supports improved health behavior and outcomes. While different modes of communication beyond clinical visits have proven successful for patient outcomes, preferences for communication modes have not been comprehensively studied among older primary care patients. We addressed this gap by assessing patient preferences for receiving cancer screening and other information from their doctors' offices. We explored stated preferences by communication modes through the lens of social determinants of health (SDOH) to gauge acceptability and equity implications for future interventions. A cross-sectional survey was mailed to primary care patients aged 45-75 years, in 2020-2021, which assessed respondents' use of telephones, computers, or tablets in daily life and their preferred modes of communication for different types of health information, including educational materials about cancer screening, tips for taking prescription medication, and protection from respiratory diseases from their doctors' offices. Respondents indicated their willingness to receive messages from their doctors' offices via each of the provided modes of communication, including telephone, text, email, patient portals, websites, and social media, on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from "unwilling" to "willing." We present the percentage of respondents who indicated that they were "willing" to receive information via specific electronic mode. Chi-square tests were used to compare participants' willingness by social characteristics. In total, 133 people completed the survey (response rate 27%). The average respondent age was 64 years, 82 (63%) respondents were female, 106 (83%) were White, 20 (16%) were Black, and 1 (1%) was Asian. In total, 75 (58%) respondents had a bachelor's degree or higher; 26 (20%) resided in rural areas, 37 (29%) in suburban areas, 50 (39%) in a town, and 15 (12%) in a city. The majority, 73 (57%), reported being comfortable with their income. Preferences of respondents for electronic communication about cancer screening were distributed as follows: 100 (75%) respondents were willing to receive information from their doctor's office via their patient portal, 98 (74%) via email, 75 (56%) via text, 60 (45%) via the hospital website, 50 (38%) via telephone, and 14 (11%) via social media. About 6 (5%) respondents were unwilling to receive any communication via electronic modes. Preferences were distributed similarly for other types of information. Respondents reporting lesser income and education consistently preferred receiving telephone calls relative to other communication modes. To optimize health communication and reach a socioeconomically diverse population, telephone calls should be added to electronic communication, especially for people with less income and education. Further research needs to identify the underlying reasons for the observed differences and how best to ensure that socioeconomically diverse groups of older adults can access reliable health information and health care services.

The Mode of Communication as a Driver of Sustainable and Equitable Asymmetric Common Pool Resource Use

Most experimental studies on common pool resource usage focus on situations in which actors are in symmetric positions when they use the resource. Many real-world cases do not fit this scenario because users are in asymmetric positions regarding their ability to benefit from the resource. Examples range from irrigation systems to climate change mitigation. Moreover, while there is large evidence on the effects of communication on social dilemmas, few studies focus on different modes of communication. We compare the effects of unstructured and structured communication on the provision of an infrastructure for a common pool resource and appropriation of the provided resource. Structured communication applied rules that are based on the ideals of democratic deliberation. Participants made contribution and appropriation decisions in an incentivized experiment. In the experiment, both communication and deliberation increased contributions in comparison to a baseline. Interestingly, deliberation attenuated the effect of the player position more than communication. Our results suggest that deliberation may be useful for overcoming asymmetric commons dilemmas in the field.

Time-optimal construction of overlay networks

This article shows how to construct an overlay network of constant degree and diameter O(log n) in O(log n) time starting from an arbitrary weakly connected graph. We assume a synchronous communication network in which nodes can send messages to nodes they know the identifier of, and new connections can be established by sending node identifiers. Suppose the initial network’s graph is weakly connected and has constant degree. In that case, our algorithm constructs the desired topology with each node sending and receiving only O(log n) messages in each round in O(log n) time w.h.p., which beats the currently best O(log ^{3/2} n) time algorithm of Götte et al. (International colloquium on structural information and communication complexity (SIROCCO), Springer, 2019). Since the problem cannot be solved faster than by using pointer jumping for O(log n) rounds (which would even require each node to communicate Omega (n) bits), our algorithm is asymptotically optimal. We achieve this speedup by using short random walks to repeatedly establish random connections between the nodes that quickly reduce the conductance of the graph using an observation of Kwok and Lau (Approximation, randomization, and combinatorial optimization. Algorithms and techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2014), Schloss Dagstuhl-Leibniz-Zentrum fuer Informatik, 2014). Additionally, we show how our algorithm can be used to efficiently solve graph problems in hybrid networks (Augustine et al. in Proceedings of the fourteenth annual ACM-SIAM symposium on discrete algorithms, SIAM, 2020). Motivated by the idea that nodes possess two different modes of communication, we assume that communication of the initial edges is unrestricted, whereas only polylogarithmically many messages can be sent over edges that have been established throughout an algorithm’s execution. For an (undirected) graph G with arbitrary degree, we show how to compute connected components, a spanning tree, and biconnected components in O(log n) time w.h.p. Furthermore, we show how to compute an MIS in O(log d + log log n) time w.h.p., where d is the initial degree of G.

From London to Bali: Raymond Williams and communication as transport and social networks

This article unearths Raymond Williams’ approach to communication as transport and social networks. Existing literature argues that the field of communication’s withdrawal from the study of transport leads to at least two setbacks: media presentism and a narrowed meaning of communication and culture. This article excavates Williams’ concept of ‘communication as transport and social networks’ by first revisiting his larger method of cultural materialism that sees communication as a whole complex assemblage of different modes of communication to facilitate connection. This is then followed by a discussion on the use of this concept in his various works and, more intensively, in The Country and the City. To emphasize Williams’ relevance to contemporary contexts, the next part of the article deals with an analysis of how digital media and contemporary transport networks facilitate the reproduction of Bali as a paradise. This article calls for a more dialectical understanding of communication that includes the inextricable relations between mobility and sociality, the material and the symbolic, and the transmission and the ritual in shaping human lives.

Well-being in social interactions: Examining personality-situation dynamics in face-to-face and computer-mediated communication.

Decades of research show that people's social lives are linked to their well-being. Yet, research on the relationship between social interactions and well-being has been largely inconclusive with regard to the effects of person-situation interactions, such as the interplay between contextual factors (e.g., interactions occurring in physical vs. digital contexts, different interaction partners) and dispositional tendencies (e.g., Big Five personality traits). Here, we report on exploratory and confirmatory findings from three large studies of college students (Study 1: N = 1,360; Study 2: N = 851; Study 3: N = 864) who completed a total of 139,363 experience sampling surveys (reporting on 87,976 social interactions). We focus on the effects of different modes of communication (face-to-face [FtF] interactions, computer-mediated communication [CMC], and mixed episodes [FtF + CMC]), and types of interaction partners (close peers, family members, and weak ties). Using multilevel structural equation modeling, we found that FtF interactions and mixed episodes were associated with highest well-being on the within-person level, and that these effects were particularly pronounced for individuals with high levels of neuroticism. CMC was related to lower well-being than FtF interactions, but higher well-being than not socializing at all. Regarding the type of interaction partner, individuals reported higher well-being after interactions with close peers than after interactions with family members and weak ties, and the difference between close peers and weak ties was larger for FtF interactions than for CMC. Energy Balance of Wireless Sensor Nodes Based on Bluetooth Low Energy and Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting.

The internet of things (IoT) makes it possible to measure physical variables and acquire data in places that were impossible a few years ago, such as transmission lines and electrical substations. Monitoring and fault diagnosis strategies can then be applied. A battery or an energy harvesting system charging a rechargeable battery typically powers IoT devices. The energy harvesting unit and rechargeable battery supply the sensors and wireless communications modules. Therefore, the energy harvesting unit must be correctly sized to optimize the availability and reliability of IoT devices. This paper applies a power balance of the entire IoT device, including the energy harvesting module that includes two thermoelectric generators and a DC-DC converter, the battery, and the sensors and communication modules. Due to the small currents typical of the different communication phases and their fast-switching nature, it is not trivial to measure the energy in each phase, requiring very specific instrumentation. This work shows that using conventional instrumentation it is possible to measure the energy involved in the different modes of communication. A detailed energy balance of the battery is also carried out during charge and discharge cycles, as well as communication modes, from which the maximum allowable data transfer rate is determined. The approach presented here can be generalized to many other smart grid IoT devices.

A Chaos‐Based Image Encryption Scheme Is Proposed Using Multiple Chaotic Maps

Everybody wants to maintain solitariness to some extent or entirely in his dealings with other people during different modes of communication. To retain privacy, researchers materialized distinct image encryption algorithms using chaotic maps. Due to their extraordinary features, most researchers employed multidimensional chaotic maps to barricade clandestine information or digital images from potential invaders. Still, multidimensional chaotic maps have many impediments conferred in the literature review. In this paper, we developed a cryptosystem utilizing multiple chaotic maps to mitigate the shortcoming of multidimensional chaotic maps. A distinctive approach is adopted to sire a key stream using a combination of chaotic maps and create a sequence of random integers linked with the pixels of the plain image to shatter the association between neighboring pixels of a plain image. Finally, diffusion is accomplished using the previously diffused pixels at a decimal level. Security and statistical analysis demonstrate that the presented encryption algorithm is robust against well‐known attacks. An ample key space indicates that it is best suited for secure communication.

‘We Poles are pill poppers’: Proximity in Polish medical popularisation videos on YouTube

The paper focuses on strategies of creating proximity in multimodal online communication. Based on the case study of a popular Polish YouTube medical channel (i.e. Najprościej mówiąc), the analysis examined how, relying on different modes of communication, the authors establish a relationship with the audience and how they create and display their identity and their position on the issues discussed. It was also the aim to determine whether the socio-cultural context of communication and the national identity of the YouTubers influences the construction of proximity. To uncover these aspects the study drew on the concept of proximity as introduced and defined by Hyland (2010). The results show a diversity of multimodal strategies of establishing proximity along five facets of organisation, argument, credibility, stance, and engagement. The original classification into the proximities of commitment and membership was extended to include a third type, i.e. the proximity of experience, which involves the demonstration of communality with and knowledge of the immediate socio-cultural context of communication.

Designing Teaching for Transfer in English for Academic Purposes

Transfer of learning is an important goal of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) education where multilingual students learn knowledge and skills of academic literacy to use in other contexts of writing. Despite the importance of learning transfer in EAP, it does not often take place without mindful teaching for transfer. EAP teachers should make active efforts to help students shape the habit of transfer thinking and experience successful transfer while taking EAP courses. This action research aims at promoting learning transfer by designing and implementing pedagogical tools guided by the notion of high road transfer: (a) transfer guideline, (b) transfer feedback, (c) transfer journals, and (d) transfer imagination activity. The teaching for transfer innovation lasted over the 16-week semester in the target course where multilingual students, who use English as a second/foreign language, learned skills (e.g., how to design PowerPoint slides using different modes of communication, critical reading, source-use skills, synthesizing, finding sources, revising, editing, and reference style) and knowledge of writing (e.g., multimodality and rhetorical situation). Each pedagogical tool was implemented in the classroom so that students maintain their awareness of the importance of learning transfer while taking the target course. Overall, the teaching for the transfer project had positive impacts on articulating what students learn from the target course, leading to actual transfer of learning to other contexts of writing. Future pedagogical directions for promoting learning transfer in EAP are discussed.

Facilitation Strategies in Online Group Work from the Perspective of Community of Inquiry

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in disruptions in a number of aspects of our lives, including in language education. Teaching and learning are now done remotely using various online learning platforms and educational technologies. While one of the foci in 21st-century skills is collaboration, how to design and manage group work in online courses remains a challenge for language educators. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, which consists of teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence, has been widely employed in designing an effective online course. Thus, through online questionnaires and interviews, this descriptive qualitative research explored the experiences of seven university lecturers from two private universities in Jogjakarta to know how teaching presence was realized in coping with online group work. The results show how the participants have implemented a variety of facilitation strategies to maintain student engagement through different modes of communication, learning models, progress monitoring, and peer feedback. This research is also expected to shed a light on the challenges and strategies taken by lecturers to ensure that collaboration occurs in their classes.
