A Comparison Between Chinese and American Education Models Based on Case Study of Education Assistance in China and Inclusive Education in the United States

Abstract: Educational inequity has always been an issue that needs to be addressed in every country. However, due to the differences in social backgrounds and educational systems, the approaches taken by China and the United States are not the same. This study compares the differences in education between China and the United States through the research methods of case study and literature review, based on the study of the policies and programs of China and the United States to address this issue. China's educational assistance has narrowed the urban-rural education gap in a short period of time, and there is instability in teaching resources. Teachers' teaching skills need to be improved and educational resources optimized to ensure that the benefits of educational assistance are maximized. In the United States, inclusive education aims to ensure that all children have equal access to education, but there are still problems in practice, and there is a need to strengthen the protection of minorities so as to ensure a balanced allocation of teaching resources.

Synthesising models of primary school mathematicians by putting influencing factors of mathematics performance to the test

The gender-sensitive analysis of influencing factors on mathematical performance of primary school pupils can yield valuable insights into facilitating this vital phase of pupils’ educational trajectory. We view gender-sensitive mathematical performance in primary school based on works of Niklas (Psychologie in Erziehung und Unterricht, 62, 106, 2015) and Luttenberger et al. (Psychology Research and Behavior Management, 11, 311–322, 2018). All elements of their models can be assigned to structural traits of origin, home learning environment, interacting variables, and mathematics performance. These are presented and described in terms of gender. In our four-year long longitudinal study (n = 239) with four measurement points in primary school, the interplay and predictive power of these elements were analysed with structural equation model. Among the structural traits of origin, socio-economic status and migration background are relevant concerning precursor skills. The home learning environment is not relevant for precursor skills or later mathematics performance. The precursor skills and self-concept appear to be significant for mathematics performance whereas enjoyment of the subject does not matter. Gender affected only two measuring points of mathematics performance, so that the results support the gender similarity hypothesis according to Hyde (The American psychologist, 60, 581–592, 2005.) According to our study, school entry is not shaped by gender differences in social background, affective characteristics, or precursor skills. The results emphasize gender equality at the start of school, so that it is of interest for future studies to determine when and on the basis of which criteria performance differences develop in mathematics.

Creating a Class Plan to Strengthen Marital Relationships During Pregnancy in Japan

BackgroundChild-rearing support programs in Japan have focused on supporting families (especially mothers) after their children are born. Maternal and child healthcare services during pregnancy mainly target mothers and their children. Although programs for fathers (such as parent–teacher classes) are gradually being implemented, support for fathers will become more important in the future.ObjectivesWe reviewed studies conducted in Japan on support for fathers during pregnancy (especially those focusing on the content of classes) and examined the content and methods of classroom approaches for fathers. Then, the content of the exercises related to the Becoming Parents Program was examined. The BPP, which was developed in Washington D.C., is an experiential program that focuses on strengthening the couple’s partnership, particularly in the transition to fatherhood. Focusing on the father–partner relationship itself, this study aimed to examine the kind of support methods and content would be best for planning a class during pregnancy in Japan and developing a class plan.MethodsWe searched the nursing literature for studies on classes or classes for expectant fathers that included educational content on fathers during pregnancy. Thirteen domestic studies were included in the literature review. Next, 16 exercises from the BPP book were analyzed for content.ResultsExpectant fathers sought specific information on support for their spouses. The 16 exercises in the BPP book entitled “The Speaker-Listener Technique and Problem Solving” were found to be fundamental skills. A proposed class for expectant parents incorporating the basics of BPP was designed.ConclusionsAlthough there are differences in social backgrounds, cultures, and family backgrounds between Japan and other countries, we believe that the basic skills can be commonly used. In Japan, it is necessary to consider holding classes for parents to strengthen their marital relationship during pregnancy.

Code switching and code mixing are various variations of language by a person or certain community groups, for example in schools, offices, housing and traditional markets. Traditional markets themselves can be said to be centers of interaction and transactions that allow speakers and speech partners to come from various regions with different backgrounds, statuses and mastery of languages. Differences in social backgrounds in speech communities in traditional market environments result in greater opportunities for the emergence of code-switching and code-mixing phenomena, and are interesting to study in more depth in terms of form, type and factors that influence the emergence of these phenomena.The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative to examine data by explaining or describing the data contained in the remarks. The phenomenon of code mixing is the use of two or more languages ​​in a speech. Code mixing can occur if a language speaker, when using Indonesian, then inserts regional language elements into Indonesian speech. In other words, someone who speaks using the main Indonesian language code has an autonomous function, while the regional language codes involved in the main code are just fragments without function or autonomy as a code. Meanwhile, the Code Switching Phenomenon is a speech event with a change in language use. or dialect.

Focus on the impact of social factors and lifestyle on the disease burden of low back pain: findings from the global burden of disease study 2019

BackgroundLow back pain (LBP) is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Differences in social backgrounds and lifestyles in various regions and countries may contribute to the discrepancies in the disease burden of LBP.MethodsBased on the GBD 2019, we collected and analyzed numbers and age-standardized rates (ASR) of LBP disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Temporal trends in ASR were also analyzed using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC). The Age-period-cohort (APC) model was used to estimate age, period and cohort trends in DALYs of LBP. An autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was used to forecast DALYs of LBP trends from 2020 to 2035.ResultsThe DALYs due to LBP increased from 1990 to 2019. The APC model showed that the risk of DALYs for global LBP increased with age and year and that the risk of DALYs was lower in the later-born cohort than in the earlier-born cohort. The main risk factors which GBD estimates were available for DALYs of LBP include smoking, occupational ergonomic factors and high BMI. It is expected that DALYs of LBP will continue to rise until 2035.ConclusionFrom 1990 to 2019, the global disease burden of LBP remained high. It is necessary to pay attention to the influence of social factors and lifestyle on LBP. Focusing on the impact of social factors as well as lifestyle on the prognosis of LBP and targeting interventions may further reduce the disease burden of LBP.

‘It’s kind of becoming a culture’: how habitus influences the migration trajectories of African students in China

ABSTRACT Global flows of international students have diversified in recent years. As a result, the common association of this form of mobility with affluent members of the global middle class increasingly does not hold. This study focuses on one emergent student migration pattern that has been the subject of relatively little empirical research: that of African international students in China. The main aim is to establish how international student migration is experienced differentially by students positioned in their home societies in unequal ways, thereby moving beyond the notion that international student migration is a middle-class activity. Drawing on data from semi-structured interviews with 40 students from 14 African countries, we apply Bourdieu’s theory of practice to examine the extent and nature of habitus transformation of students from a variety of social backgrounds. We show that differences in social background in this particular case led to distinct trajectories during the sojourn and in terms of post-study plans. Our study makes a theoretical contribution to the international student migration literature, arguing that the nature of transformation that took place among student migrants as a result of study was shaped by the nature of mobility, both spatial and social.

Teenage Conduct Problems: A Lifetime of Disadvantage in the Labour Market?

Using data from two British birth cohorts born in 1958 and 1970 we investigate the impact of teenage conduct problems on subsequent employment prospects through to age 42. We find teenagers with conduct problems went on to spend fewer months both in paid employment, and in employment, education and training (EET) between age 17 and 42 than comparable teenagers who did not experience conduct problems. Employment and EET disadvantages were greatest among those with severe behavioural problems. The ‘gap’ in time spent in employment or EET by conduct problem status was similar for men and women across cohorts, with only a small part of the gap being attenuated by differences in social background, individual characteristics and educational attainment in public examination at age 16. We discuss the implications of our findings.

Living Alone and Gender Differences in Rehospitalization for Heart Failure After Discharge Among Acute Heart Failure Patients.

Home treatment for heart failure (HF) is one of the most important problems in patients after discharge as a secondary preventive measure for rehospitalization for HF. However, there are no detailed studies on gender differences in sociopsychological factors such as living alone for HF rehospitalization among patients with acute HF (AHF).This prospective multicenter cohort study enrolled patients with AHF between April 2015 and August 2017. Patients of each gender with first AHF were divided into those living alone and those not living alone. The primary endpoint was defined as rehospitalization for HF after discharge. Cox proportional hazard analysis was performed to determine the association between living alone and the endpoint.Overall, 581 patients were included in this study during the 3-year follow-up. The proportion of rehospitalization for HF was significantly higher in patients living alone than in those not living alone among male patients. However, female patients showed no difference in endpoints between the two groups. The difference was independently maintained even after adjusting for differences in social backgrounds in male patients (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 2.02; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.07-3.70). In female patients, the HR for rehospitalization for HF showed no difference between the two groups (adjusted HR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.56-1.69).In this study population, male patients living alone after first AHF discharge had a higher risk of rehospitalization for HF than those not living alone, but these differences were not observed in female patients.

Improving Medical Tourism Services through Human Behaviour and Cultural Competence

Medical tourism is a type of service sector in which there is direct interaction between healthcare practitioners and patient-customers, leading to several challenges due to cultural and social background differences. We aimed to investigate the determinants of delivering a culturally-oriented service in medical tourism sector. Adopting an exploratory qualitative approach, interviews were conducted through a semi-structured procedure with authorities across various medical sectors in South Korea in winter 2017. Participants were all involved in and aware of the medical tourism sector, both academically and clinically. The interview transcripts were coded through a systematic thematic analysis. In order to focus on non-clinical service in medical tourism sector, and a system of cultural competence delivery, three main themes were identified: 1) The personal characteristics of doctors; 2) External supports to be provided by the associated organisations; and finally, 3) Skilfulness, which implies the culturally-oriented interaction with foreign patients. Several strategies are suggested to address the non-clinical challenges and conflicts in doctor-patient interaction in the sector of medical tourism. It is likely that providing a culturally-oriented service in this sector demands for a comprehensive planning, and several strategies for implementation in order to support and train a team of skilful doctors with non-clinical characteristics. These finding will likely have insights for those organisations searching to improve their performance in the medical tourism sector.

Bioinformatics calls the school: Use of smartphones to introduce Python for bioinformatics in high schools

The dynamic nature of technological developments invites us to rethink the learning spaces. In this context, science education can be enriched by the contribution of new computational resources, making the educational process more up-to-date, challenging, and attractive. Bioinformatics is a key interdisciplinary field, contributing to the understanding of biological processes that is often underrated in secondary schools. As a useful resource in learning activities, bioinformatics could help in engaging students to integrate multiple fields of knowledge (logical-mathematical, biological, computational, etc.) and generate an enriched and long-lasting learning environment. Here, we report our recent project in which high school students learned basic concepts of programming applied to solving biological problems. The students were taught the Python syntax, and they coded simple tools to answer biological questions using resources at hand. Notably, these were built mostly on the students’ own smartphones, which proved to be capable, readily available, and relevant complementary tools for teaching. This project resulted in an empowering and inclusive experience that challenged differences in social background and technological accessibility.

Die Vorahnung der Revolution in den Werken russischer Schriftsteller

This article discusses the intellectual and spiritual atmosphere in Russia on the eve of the 1917 revolution. In particular, through the examples of Leo Tolstoy and Maxim Gorky, the author shows how the changes in the Russian economic and sociopolitical situation effected the intellectuals of the era. Despite the differences in social backgrounds, lifestyles, worldviews and artistic styles, Tolstoy’s and Gorky’s assessments of Russia’s developmental prospects were in many ways consistent. As this article demonstrates, the values held by both writers were grounded in their unorthodox religious views. In conclusion, the author reexamines Lenin’s assessment of both writers.

DIFFERENCES IN SOCIAL BACKGROUND, STUDY CHOICE MOTIVATION AND HIGHER EDUCATION EXPERIENCE BETWEEN PRE-SERVICE CLASS TEACHERS AND PRE-SERVICE SUBJECT TEACHERS

Considering that the disregard in teacher profession seems to be an observed problem in contemporary western societies which can result in a deficit of teachers, it is important to research reasons for enrolment into faculties of teacher education, factors which create a resistance towards the teacher education and teaching profession and possible differences between pre-service subject and pre-service class teachers related to these issues. Thus, the purpose of this research was to examine the differences in social background (level of human, financial, and social capital), motivation for selection of program of study and the experience of studying in higher education between pre-service class teachers and pre-service subject teachers. Theoretical background of research was based on Coleman’s theory of social mobility (1988) and the theory of motivation (Watt & Richardson, 2007). A quantitative research design was employed, and the survey was conducted. Sample comprised 455 pre-service (subject and class) teachers studying at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. The results of Welch ANOVA test showed that pre-service subject teachers possess a higher level of financial and human capital, more often are extrinsically motivated in choosing the program of study and have more positive experiences of studying than pre-service class teachers. The results of logistic binary regression showed that participants are more likely to select the subject teaching profession (instead of class teaching profession) if they take into consideration status and financial benefit of their future occupation more frequently, if, on average, they spend more money and if they have more family members who held university degrees. Findings led to the conclusion that programs of study for the education of subject teachers are more prestigious which is not in line with the Coleman’s theory of social mobility (1988) but are closer to the theory of cultural reproduction (Bourdieu, 1986). Factors Associated with Death Anxiety in Elderly Batak Tribe who Live in Bandung

Death is something definite. Awareness about the certainty of the coming death raises different responses depending on each person, including the elderly. Differences in social background, beliefs, and life experiences have shaped their respective levels of spirituality elderly, but the elderly still be experiencing anxiety to face the death. Not infrequently the death anxiety felt excessively, causing symptoms that can be observed.This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with death anxiety in elderly Batak tribe who live in Bandung, which includes the quality of life, life satisfaction, and culture. The study employed a descriptive correlational design, particularly cross-sectional design. There were 98 elderly who served as participants. The samples were chosen by using accidental sampling methods and criteria for inclusion. The data were analyzed by using Chi-square and binary logistic regression.The results showed that there was correlation between life satisfaction, and culture with death anxiety in elderly Batak tribe who live in Bandung (the two of factors has p value < 0.001 each) and with the binary logistic regression analysis of the factors known that the satisfaction of life is the most dominant factor that associated with death anxiety with OR value of 0.122. Community nurses need to pay attention to the improvement of satisfaction of life of the elderly.The conclusion this research is High satisfaction of life of elderly people have an impact on reducing the risk of death anxiety in elderly people, without forgetting other factors.

Do Advanced Mathematics Skills Predict Success in Biology and Chemistry Degrees?

The mathematical preparedness of science undergraduates has been a subject of debate for some time. This paper investigates the relationship between school mathematics attainment and degree outcomes in biology and chemistry across England, a much larger scale of analysis than has hitherto been reported in the literature. A unique dataset which links the National Pupil Database for England (NPD) and Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) data is used to track the educational trajectories of a national cohort of 16-year olds through their school and degree programmes. Multilevel regression models indicate that students who completed advanced mathematics qualifications prior to their university study of biology and chemistry were no more likely to attain the best degree outcomes than those without advanced mathematics. The models do, however, suggest that success in advanced chemistry at school predicts outcomes in undergraduate biology and vice versa. There are important social background differences and the impact of the university attended is considerable. We discuss a range of possible explanations of these findings.

Institutional constraints and the translation of college aspirations into intentions—Evidence from a factorial survey

Abstract This article examines under which conditions high school students’ college aspirations (unconstrained wishes) translate into (constrained) college intentions. Drawing on the Wisconsin model of status attainment and sociological rational choice theory, it is argued that—while educational aspirations are mainly the result of socialization processes within families and schools—educational intentions are constrained by institutional opportunities and barriers emerging from the higher education system, which might influence students from different social backgrounds in different ways. The focus lies on four institutional characteristics of German higher education institutions—namely geographical distance, reputation, selection procedures and the information provided by colleges. Methodologically, I draw on a factorial survey on application intentions for college programs that is integrated in a survey of Berlin high school students who indicated an aspiration to attend college one year before graduating. The findings suggest that distance from home is an especially strong constraint on college application intentions. The effects of the institutional dimensions, however, rarely differ for students from different social backgrounds. Nevertheless, social background differences can be observed regarding the overall strength of application intentions indicating that socially advantaged students feel generally less constrained by the institutional characteristics presented to them. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Participation In Higher Education: Aspirations, Attainment And Social Background

ABSTRACT The recent report of the Milburn Review into Social Mobility highlights the under-representation of young people from lower socio-economic groups in higher education and encourages universities and others to act to remedy this situation as a contribution to greater social mobility. The paper uses data from the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England to examine the relationship between social background, attainment and university participation. The results show that differences in school-level attainment associated with social background are by far the most important explanation for social background differences in university attendance. However, there remains a small proportion of the participation gap that is not accounted for by attainment. It is also the case that early intentions for higher education participation are highly predictive of actual participation. The results suggest that although there may be some scope for universities to act to improve participation by people from less advantaged backgrounds, a much more important focus of action is on improving the school-level achievement of these students.

European Capitals of Culture: elitism or inclusion? The case of Stavanger2008

Who participates in the European Capital of Culture? This article analyses participation in Stavanger, European Capital of Culture (ECOC) in 2008, drawing on data from a survey conducted among a cross-section of the population of the city and its closest surrounds. It examines whether there is systematic variation in the number and type of events attended across key social background characteristics such as gender, age, education and income, as well as interest in culture. It finds systematic, but small differences between the genders, age groups and people of different educational attainment, and no differences between people with high and low income. Participation levels are high in all social strata. However, interest in culture is an important predictor of participation. Differences in social background and cultural interest matter more for participation in high-brow events. The authors conclude that the ECOC event was fairly inclusive of different population segments.

Social origin, schooling and individual change in intelligence during childhood influence long-term mortality: a 68-year follow-up study

Background Intelligence at a single time-point has been linked to health outcomes. An individual's IQ increases with longer schooling, but the validity of such increase is unclear. In this study, we assess the hypothesis that individual change in the performance on IQ tests between ages 10 and 20 years is associated with mortality later in life.Methods The analyses are based on a cohort of Swedish boys born in 1928 (n = 610) for whom social background data were collected in 1937, IQ tests were carried out in 1938 and 1948 and own education and mortality were recorded up to 2006. Structural equation models were used to estimate the extent to which two latent intelligence scores, at ages 10 and 20 years, manifested by results on the IQ tests, are related to paternal and own education, and how all these variables are linked to all-cause mortality.Results Intelligence at the age of 20 years was associated with lower mortality in adulthood, after controlling for intelligence at the age of 10 years. The increases in intelligence partly mediated the link between longer schooling and lower mortality. Social background differences in adult intelligence (and consequently in mortality) were partly explained by the tendency for sons of more educated fathers to receive longer schooling, even when initial intelligence levels had been accounted for.Conclusions The results are consistent with a causal link from change in intelligence to mortality, and further, that schooling-induced changes in IQ scores are true and bring about lasting changes in intelligence. In addition, if both these interpretations are correct, social differences in access to longer schooling have consequences for social differences in both adult intelligence and adult health.

STI-prevalence and differences in social background and sexual behavior among urban and rural young women in Uganda

Adolescents in Uganda carry a heavy burden of reproductive health problems. Different environment creates different problems. To study the prevalence of STI and to compare social and behavioral risk factors for Neisseria gonorrhoea (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) among sexually experienced young women in one urban and one rural area in Uganda. Consenting, sexually experienced women, below 20 years, visiting two different youth clinics were asked about social background, genital symptoms and sexual experiences. Vaginal samples were taken for NG and CT and analyzed by PCR. The prevalence of NG and/or CT was 20 (6.8%) in the urban and 23 (7.8%) in the rural study site, a non-significant difference. The rural women were often in marital union, 25.3% compared to 12.2% of the urban women (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.6-3.8) and had experienced more pregnancies and had more children. Their partners were often more than 10 years older. More urban women (42.2%) knew their HIV status compared to rural women (16.2%), OR 2.1 (1.6-2.7), reported more condom use and more sexual partners. Marital status and few sexual partners does not appear to protect young rural women from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), implying that male sexual behavior may have an important impact on women's risk to be infected.

Validity of Self Completed Health Questionnaire among Oral Surgery Patients in Capitol Dental

Objective of this study is to determine the degree of validity of self completed health questionnaire among oral surgery patient at the Capitol Dental when compared with a structured oral interview. A prospective random selection method was applied using a standardized questionnaire. The cohorts are patients attending Capital Dental Clinic ambulatory emergency care department of the Washington D.C. Public Health Institution. One hundred and forty (140) patients who presented for the first time at the Dental Clinic on emergency basis were involved. Patients between ages 50-60 are the most predominant at 31.4%, followed by ages 40-50 at 28.6%. Ethnically, the African-American population are by far the most represented at 84.3%. 24 no responses or 7.1% of the 140 patients under study missed at least one question each in the self completed health questionnaire. The medial history that reflect the highest disparity percentage when the two modalities of questionnaire were compared is substance abuse 7.8%, followed by HTN 5.7%, HIV 3.6%, and Cardiovascular diseases at 2.8%. It was concluded that self completed health questionnaire should be formally tested before use and be sensitive to differences in social background and culture. One method cannot be used exclusively.
