Epibiotic association of encrusting cheilostome bryozoans on shells of an invasive mussel from rocky shores of South Africa, with the description of a new aviculiferous species of Chaperia

Rocky shores typically exhibit a variety of sedentary and free-moving forms of epibionts associated with the shells of mussel basibionts. This paper provides a first report on epibiotic bryozoans found on shells of the invasive Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck. More than 2500 mussels were collected between December 2019 and October 2020 from rocky shores during low spring tides across the south-southeast coast of South Africa. Ten percent of these mussels hosted epibiotic bryozoans. We examined a subset of these epibiotised mussels to assess the diversity of bryozoans. Three encrusting cheilostome species were identified: Chaperia atypica n. sp., Celleporella hyalina (Linnaeus), and Hippomonavella sp. This new species is the first Chaperia with avicularia and the first South African species with ooecia. This study highlights the biological diversity of epibiotic bryozoans on mussel shells and, given their differences in microtopography, the possibility that invasive species can provide a new substratum for rare, overlooked or undescribed species of epibionts.

Plant Tissue Parenchyma and Vascular Bundles Selectively Regulate Stem Cell Mechanosensing and Differentiation.

Plant tissues are plentiful, diverse, and due to convergent evolution are structurally similar to many animal tissues. Decellularized plant tissues feature microtopographies that resemble cancellous bone (porous parenchyma) and skeletal muscle (fibrous vascular bundles). However, the use of plant tissues as an inexpensive and abundant biomaterial for controlling stem cell behavior has not been widely explored. Celery plant tissues were cut cross-sectionally (porous parenchyma) or longitudinally (fibrous vascular bundles) and decellularized. Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were then cultured atop plant tissues and confocal imaging of single cells was used to evaluate the early effects of microtopography on MSC adhesion, morphology, cytoskeletal alignment, Yes-associated protein (YAP) signaling, and downstream lineage commitment to osteogenic or myogenic phenotypes. Microtopography was conserved post plant tissue decellularization and MSCs attached and proliferated on plant tissues. MSCs cultured on porous parenchyma spread isotropically along the periphery of plant tissue pores. In contrast, MSCs cultured on vascular bundles spread anisotropically and aligned in the direction of fibrous vascular bundles. Differences in microtopography also influenced MSC nuclear YAP localization and actin anisotropy, with higher values observed on fibrous tissues. When exposed to osteogenic or myogenic culture medium, MSCs on porous parenchyma had a higher percentage of cells stain positive for bone biomarker alkaline phosphatase, whereas myoblast determination protein 1 (MyoD) was significantly upregulated for MSCs on fibrous vascular bundles. Together, these results show that plant tissues are an abundant biomaterial with defined microarchitecture that can reproducibly regulate MSC morphology, mechanosensing, and differentiation. Agricultural drainage increases the photosynthetic capacity of boreal peatlands

A drained boreal bog with active drainage ditches and the introduction of forage grass was compared with a natural bog site to assess the effect of agricultural drainage on the photosynthetic capacity of boreal peatlands. In this study, the net carbon dioxide uptake and the ecosystem respiration were measured using a pair of clear and dark chambers, connected to a greenhouse gas analyzer in order to estimate the gross primary production (GPP). Environmental factors, including photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), peat soil temperature, soil moisture, electrical conductivity and water table depth (WTD), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the soil pore water were also investigated at each site. Our results confirmed a correlation between water table depth, peat soil temperature, electrical conductivity and peatland productivity. Changes in electrical conductivity, water table depth, and peat soil temperature together explained 61% of gross primary productivity variance at our drained peatland pasture site. In general, plant functional types/growth forms did not have any significant difference in their GPP at the drained site except shrubs which had a significantly higher GPP at PAR level greater than 1000 μmol/m2/s (F(3,30.84) = 11.64, p < 0.001). At the natural site, GPP was significantly higher at the hollow (0.168 ± 0.02 mg/m2/s) compared to the hummock (0.098 ± 0.01 mg/m2/s) where relatively the higher WTD was recorded. We therefore concluded that water shortage to the shallow rooting depth of shrubs on our hummock subplots may be the cause of the low productivity. At PAR greater than 1000 μmol/m2/s, productivity at the hollow was still significantly higher (0.17 ± 0.002 mg/m2/s) compared to the hummock (0.10 ± 0.00 mg/m2/s). This suggests that, for ecosystem carbon modelling, the minimum PAR level at which the GPP is estimated is very crucial. All the growth forms at the drained site recorded a significantly higher GPP than the microforms at the natural site. We speculate that not only hydrological changes via agricultural drainage can affect the carbon balance of boreal peatland ecosystem through photosynthesis, but also the hydrological changes in the peat due to the differences in peat soil makeup, structure and density. We, therefore, conclude that differences in microtopography and the corresponding changes in vegetation, land-use practice and its effects on peat soil properties and hydrology should be taken into account when modelling the gross primary production in a peatland ecosystem.

Extreme drought affects the productivity, but not the composition, of a desert plant community in Central Asia differentially across microtopographies

Extreme climatic conditions are major drivers of ecosystem function and dynamics and their frequency is increasing under climate change. Climatic conditions interact with local microtopography, which might either buffer or exacerbate the degree of climatic stress. Here we sought to understand how extremely dry growing seasons affected the composition and productivity of desert ephemeral communities growing in sand dunes from the Gurbantunggut desert in Central Asia, and to which extent did microtopography modulate the response. We set up a rainfall manipulation study on four sand dune microtopographies and, during two consecutive years, we measured soil moisture, nutrients and texture, ephemeral layer composition, plant phenology, biomass accumulation and biomass allocation patterns for the dominant species. We observed significant biomass reductions during the extreme drought but plant community richness and composition were not affected, indicating that the composition of the ephemeral layer in this desert ecosystem may resist under extreme conditions. Additionally, extreme drought increased biomass allocation to reproductive organs of the dominant species. There were also significant microtopographic effects as the sensitivity of biomass to drought in western aspects was larger than in eastern aspects. Our results indicate that previously overlooked microtopographical differences may mediate the impact of climate change on plant communities.

Microtopography-induced ecohydrological effects alter plant community structure

Microtopography affects radiation, reflection, and hydrological processes, thereby forming different microhabitats. This study aimed to determine how these processes influence the plot-scale ecosystem (~0.1–1000 m2). Soil was sampled at 0–10 cm and 10–25 cm on depressions, gentle and steep slopes, and gullies on an artificial hillslope. Moisture, temperature, ammonium, nitrate, and plant-available phosphorus (P) were measured. Plant species distributions were evaluated using quadrats and plant nitrogen (N) and P were quantified. Resource richness, evenness, and diversity were compared for all microtopographies. Seasonal dynamics of moisture, nitrate, and available phosphorus indicate that leaching processes shape resource heterogeneity at the plot-scale. Soil nutrient levels widely differed among microtopographies during the non-growing season, but these differences decreased during the growing season. Elevated soil nitrate (but not available P) increased plant nitrate and N:P ratios on steep slopes. Higher soil available P on steep slopes was associated with an increase in the relative abundance of legumes, and subsequently stimulated the accumulation of soil N. The hydrological pathway contributed towards shaping plant community structure by regulating soil resource distribution across microtopographies. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that slight differences in microtopography (e.g., gentle versus steep slopes) alter the soil environment and plant community; therefore, sampling and treatments should be implemented under similar microtopographic conditions to avoid heterogeneity, even at such small scales.

Decoupling of nutrient cycles in a Eucalyptus woodland under elevated CO2

Abstract Elevated atmospheric [CO2] (eCO2) is currently altering nutrient cycling and availability in ecosystems worldwide. If the availabilities and turnover rates of macro‐ and micronutrients are differentially affected, then nutrient cycles may become out of sync (i.e., decoupled). We evaluated the impacts of 3 years of eCO2 (550 µmol CO2/mol) on the availability, stability and coupling of eleven essential macro and micronutrients in a mature, P‐limited Eucalyptus woodland from Eastern Australia (EucFACE). Despite increases in N and P availability in the first 18 months of study, nutrient availabilities and their stoichiometric ratios were unaffected by eCO2 across the study period (26–57 months of experimental duration). In contrast, the stability of nutrient availability increased under eCO2, which was concomitant with a reduction in the degree of biogeochemical coupling. Synthesis. We demonstrate that macro‐ and micro‐nutrient cycles can quickly become out of sync (i.e., decoupled) under eCO2 in a low‐nutrient Australian eucalypt woodland, despite the lack of consistent effects on nutrient availability; such decoupling of nutrient cycles may have unpredicted consequences in terms of ecosystem functioning under the widely assumed positive relationship between biogeochemical coupling and ecosystem functioning.

A unique meadow of the marine angiosperm Zostera japonica, covering a large area in the turbid intertidal Yellow River Delta, China

Marine submerged aquatic angiosperms (seagrasses) are declining globally. The species Zostera japonica Asch. & Graebn. is endangered in its native range in Asia, but has been successfully introduced to North America. A large area (1031.8 ha) of Z. japonica meadow has recently been discovered in the intertidal zone of Yellow River Delta, China. This seagrass occurs along both sides of the river mouth, forming dense meadows in turbid water conditions. Seasonal investigations over two years were conducted to examine the distribution, biomass, seed reproduction, seed bank, and population recruitment of the seagrass meadows at three sites in the intertidal zone. The meadows generally showed relatively high coverage, biomass, reproductive effort, and seed production in August. The seed bank was found to be large and contributed to population recruitment. There were significant inter-annual variations overall, and at individual sites. These variations are likely due to winter temperatures, which determine the abundance of overwintering shoots and seedling success. Differences in micro-topography may also play a role in producing variations in seedling success between sites. Microsatellite analysis revealed a high genetic exchange between the two sides of the river mouth. The results indicate that the seagrass bed in the Yellow River Delta shallow waters is in good condition, which can be attributed to its location within a national nature reserve. Establishment of protected areas might act as an effective way to mitigate the anthropogenic disturbance, conserve the seagrass meadows, and then enhance critical ecosystem functions.

Effect of micro-environment in ridge and southern slope on soil respiration in Quercus mongolica forest

BackgroundSoil respiration (Rs) is a major factor of the absorption and accumulation of carbon through photosynthesis in the ecosystem carbon cycle. This directly affects the amount of net ecosystem productivity, which affects the stability and sustainability of the ecosystem. Understanding the characteristics of Rs is indispensable to scientifically understand the carbon cycle of ecosystems. It is very important to study Rs characteristics through analysis of environmental factors closely related to Rs. Rs is affected by various environmental factors, such as temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, litter supply, organic matter content, dominant plant species, and soil disturbance. This study was conducted to analyze the effects of micro-topographical differences on Rs in forest vegetation by measuring the Rs on the ridge and southern slope sites of the broadly established Quercus mongolica forest in the central Korean area.MethodRs, Ts, and soil moisture data were collected at the southern slope and ridge of the Q. mongolica forest in the Mt. Jeombong area in order to investigate the effects of topographical differences on Rs. Rs was collected by the closed chamber method, and data collection was performed from May 2011 to October 2013, except Winter seasons from November to April or May. For collecting the raw data of Rs in the field, acrylic collars were placed at the ridge and southern slope of the forest. The accumulated surface litter and the soil organic matter content (SOMC) were measured to a 5 cm depth. Based on these data, the Rs characteristics of the slope and ridge were analyzed.ResultsRs showed a distinct seasonal variation pattern in both the ridge and southern slope sites. In addition, Rs showed a distinct seasonal variation with high and low Ts changes. The average Rs measurements for the two sites, except for the Winter periods that were not measured, were 550.1 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 at the ridge site and 289.4 mg CO2 m−2 h− 1 at the southern slope, a difference of 52.6%. There was no significant difference in the Rs difference between slopes except for the first half of 2013, and both sites showed a tendency to increase exponentially as Ts increased. In addition, although the correlation is low, the difference in Rs between sites tended to increase as Ts increased. SMC showed a large fluctuation at the southern slope site relative to the ridge site, as while it was very low in 2013, it was high in 2011 and 2012. The accumulated litter of the soil surface and the SOMC at the depth range of 0~5 cm were 874 g m− 2 and 23.3% at the ridge site, and 396 g m−2 and 19.9% at the southern slope site.ConclusionsIn this study, Rs was measured for the ridge and southern slope sites, which have two different results where the surface litter layer is disturbed by strong winds. The southern slope site shows that the litter layer formed in autumn due to strong winds almost disappeared, and while in the ridge site, it became thick due to the transfer of litter from the southern slope site. The mean Rs was about two times higher in the ridge site compared to that in the southern slope site. The Rs difference seems to be due to the difference in the amount of litter accumulated on the soil surface. As a result, the litter layer supplied to the soil surface is disturbed due to the micro-topographical difference, as the slope and the change of the community structure due to the plant season cause heterogeneity of the litter layer development, which in turn affects SMC and Rs. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce and understand these micro-topographical features and mechanisms when quantifying and analyzing the Rs of an ecosystem.

In vitro biocompatibility of orthodontic miniscrews with human gingival fibroblast and SAOS-2 osteoblast cultures

Miniscrews are an important choice for orthodontic anchorage. Yet reports on failures do exist, and attempts have been made to elucidate the causes. Clinical outcomes may be compromised not only by the mechanical implications of miniscrew design and the location of anchorage but also by poor biocompatibility. Hence, this study deals with the surface roughness and elemental composition of miniscrews and how these properties may affect the in vitro biocompatibility of four commercially available miniscrews. Most of the currently available miniscrews are made of TiAl6V4, an alloy widely considered to be biocompatible. The samples tested in this study included four similarly dimensioned TiAl6V4 products from different manufacturers: tomas® by Dentaurum, OrthoEasy® by Forestadent®, Dual Top™ by Jeil Medical/Promedia, and LOMAS by Mondeal®. The surface properties of these products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X‑ray spectroscopy (EDX). Cytotoxicity was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and agar overlay assays according to ISO10993-5. The miniscrew products were found to show variations in surface-finish quality pertaining to topography and chemical composition, with the latter departing slightly from the manufacturers' specifications. MTT assays yielded rates of cell culture viability in excess of 90%, and agar overlay assays did not reveal decoloration beyond the specimen outlines in any of the experimental groups tested. The four miniscrew products exhibited some minor, but statistically significant, differences in microtopography, alloy composition, and biological inertness. Cytotoxicity testing revealed that all four products should be considered non-cytotoxic, thus, ruling out poor biocompatibility as acause of miniscrew failure.

Deviations on a theme: Peat patterning in sub-tropical landscapes

Patterned landscapes have long been a popular setting to test hypotheses about the effects of processes on ecosystem structure. The combination of scale-dependent and positive feedback theory is one of the most well-supported in current literature, each explaining separate aspects of patterned peatlands. These theories have been developed from dynamics in boreal peatlands and tested in boreal systems, but the mechanisms that control peat patterning in a sub-tropical system have yet to be acknowledged in theory. Statistical evidence for different mechanisms are present in the biophysical features of sub-tropical patterned peatlands, such as the ridge and slough landscape (RSL) within the greater Everglades wetland system. We use data from the RSL to test whether features of a sub-tropical, patterned peatland conform to positive and scale-dependent feedback patterning theories developed in boreal peatlands and use dynamic simulation to explain our results. The analysis of surface elements and nutrient differences within the RSL and our dynamic simulations indicate that positive and scale-dependent feedback may not be appropriate theories for sub-tropical peat patterning. Decomposition, rather than production, appears to be more important for abrupt microtopographical elevation differences, and differential nutrient concentrations are due to vegetation types, rather than increased evapotranspiration from greater vascular plant growth. Our model expands on the current theories for RSL maintenance, incorporating vegetation types and life history traits into differential peat deposition, which create the signature microtopographical differences found in the Everglades, and demonstrates that the underlying ecological patterning processes in sub-tropical peatlands are likely very different from boreal peatlands and require further discussion and study.

Evapotranspiration across plant types and geomorphological units in polygonal Arctic tundra

Coastal tundra ecosystems are relatively flat, and yet display large spatial variability in ecosystem traits. The microtopographical differences in polygonal geomorphology produce heterogeneity in permafrost depth, soil temperature, soil moisture, soil geochemistry, and plant distribution. Few measurements have been made, however, of how water fluxes vary across polygonal tundra plant types, limiting our ability to understand and model these ecosystems. Our objective was to investigate how plant distribution and geomorphological location affect actual evapotranspiration (ET). These effects are especially critical in light of the rapid change polygonal tundra systems are experiencing with Arctic warming. At a field site near Barrow, Alaska, USA, we investigated the relationships between ET and plant cover in 2014 and 2015. ET was measured at a range of spatial and temporal scales using: (1) An eddy covariance flux tower for continuous landscape-scale monitoring; (2) An automated clear surface chamber over dry vegetation in a fixed location for continuous plot-scale monitoring; and (3) Manual measurements with a clear portable chamber in approximately 60 locations across the landscape. We found that variation in environmental conditions and plant community composition, driven by microtopographical features, has significant influence on ET. Among plant types, ET from moss-covered and inundated areas was more than twice that from other plant types. ET from troughs and low polygonal centers was significantly higher than from high polygonal centers. ET varied seasonally, with peak fluxes of 0.14mmh−1 in July. Despite 24 hours of daylight in summer, diurnal fluctuations in incoming solar radiation and plant processes produced a diurnal cycle in ET. Combining the patterns we observed with projections for the impact of permafrost degradation on polygonal structure suggests that microtopographic changes associated with permafrost thaw have the potential to alter tundra ecosystem ET.

Nocturnal Near-Surface Temperature, but not Flow Dynamics, can be Predicted by Microtopography in a Mid-Range Mountain Valley

We investigate nocturnal flow dynamics and temperature behaviour near the surface of a 170-m long gentle slope in a mid-range mountain valley. In contrast to many existing studies focusing on locations with significant topographic variations, gentle slopes cover a greater spatial extent of the Earth’s surface. Air temperatures were measured using the high-resolution distributed-temperature-sensing method within a two-dimensional fibre-optic array in the lowest metre above the surface. The main objectives are to characterize the spatio-temporal patterns in the near-surface temperature and flow dynamics, and quantify their responses to the microtopography and land cover. For the duration of the experiment, including even clear-sky nights with weak winds and strong radiative forcing, the classical cold-air drainage predicted by theory could not be detected. In contrast, we show that the airflow for the two dominant flow modes originates non-locally. The most abundant flow mode is characterized by vertically-decoupled layers featuring a near-surface flow perpendicular to the slope and strong stable stratification, which contradicts the expectation of a gravity-driven downslope flow of locally produced cold air. Differences in microtopography and land cover clearly affect spatio-temporal temperature perturbations. The second most abundant flow mode is characterized by strong mixing, leading to vertical coupling with airflow directed down the local slope. Here variations of microtopography and land cover lead to negligible near-surface temperature perturbations. We conclude that spatio-temporal temperature perturbations, but not flow dynamics, can be predicted by microtopography, which complicates the prediction of advective-heat components and the existence and dynamics of cold-air pools in gently sloped terrain in the absence of observations.

Saturated hydraulic conductivity in Sphagnum‐dominated peatlands: do microforms matter?

AbstractWithin peatland ecosystems, small deviations in surface elevation result in microforms that differ in depth to water table, plant type and rate of biogeochemical cycling, possibly leading to differences in peat physical and hydrological properties that could feed back to the whole ecosystem hydrological and biogeochemical function. However, hydrological parameters for peatland microforms have not been quantified. This study determined bulk density, pore size distribution and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) at hummocks and hollows of four, Sphagnum‐dominated Canadian peatlands. Study sites included both a bog and poor fen in each of Alberta and Quebec allowing for investigation of differences in peat hydrophysical properties between microforms across a range of Sphagnum‐dominated peatlands. Hydraulic conductivity was determined in the laboratory on peat from the surface (0.03–0.08 m) and the saturated zone (0.20 m below the local water table position). Peatland type, climate region, microform and depth of peat were all significant descriptors of variation in Ksat. Deeper peat was less conductive than surface peat. Hummocks generally had higher Ksat than hollows at both surface and saturated zones, although differences between microforms varied between sites. Differences in Ksat between samples were correlated with bulk density, von Post humification and macroporosity. These results indicate that there are microtopographical differences in peat hydrophysical properties; however, the strong decline in Ksat with depth indicates that differences in the local water table, resulting in a change in depth of water flow, is likely a stronger control on local Ksat than microform type. The effect of windthrow disturbances on biochemical and chemical soil properties in the northern mountainous forests of Iran

Land degradation as a result of wind (aeolian processes) is one of the most significant causes of soil loss in northern Iran. In order to gain a broader understanding of the specific effects of aeolian disturbance on soils in this region, research was conducted to evaluate soil microbial respiration and nitrogen mineralization in places where differences in microtopography occur due to the uprooting of trees by windthrow events, thereby causing variations in microtopography hereby referred to as “pit–mound positions”.A twenty-hectare study site situated within the Tarbiat Modares University Experimental Forest Station located in the Mazandaran province of northern Iran was chosen for this research, with thirty-four uprooted trees selected for detailed study. A classification of five microsites was developed to distinguish differences in microtopography in the immediate vicinity of these uprooted trees: mound top, mound wall, pit bottom, pit wall and closed canopy. Soil was sampled in the 0–15, 15–30 and 30–45cm depths at all microsites using a core soil sampler with an 81cm2 cross section. Soil reaction, organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, moisture, abundance and biomass of earthworms, soil microbial respiration and net N mineralization for all samples were measured in the laboratory.Statistical comparisons revealed that the highest soil microbial respiration and net N-mineralization occurred in pit bottoms. Mound tops showed the lowest levels of soil microbial respiration and net N mineralization. Measurements of soil microbial respiration and net N mineralization were shown to decrease in relation to increased soil depth, with significant differences depending on soil depth. Indications of aeolian processes indicate that windthrow events create different microsites, thereby influencing the specific micro-scale soil characteristics. These micro-scale characteristics should be taken into account when performing forest soils surveys and to inform forest management practices.

Sensitivity of interfacial hydraulics to the microtopographic roughness of water‐lain gravels

ABSTRACTFlow within the interfacial layer of gravel‐bed rivers is poorly understood, but this zone is important because the hydraulics here transport sediment, generate flow structures and interact with benthic organisms. We hypothesized that different gravel‐bed microtopographies generate measurable differences in hydraulic characteristics within the interfacial layer. This was tested using a high density of spatially and vertically distributed, velocity time series measured in the interfacial layers above three surfaces of contrasting microtopography. These surfaces had natural water‐worked textures, captured in the field using a casting procedure. Analysis was repeated for three discharges, with Reynolds numbers between 165000 and 287000, to evaluate whether discharge affected the impact of microtopography on interfacial flows. Relative submergence varied over a small range (3.5 to 8.1) characteristic of upland gravel‐bed rivers. Between‐surface differences in the median and variance of several time‐averaged and turbulent flow parameters were tested using non‐parametric statistics. Across all discharges, microtopographic differences did not affect spatially averaged (median) values of streamwise velocity, but were associated with significant differences in its spatial variance, and did affect spatially averaged (median) turbulent kinetic energy. Sweep and ejection events dominated the interfacial region above all surfaces at all flows, but there was a microtopographic effect, with Q2 and Q4 events less dominant and structures less persistent above the surface with the widest relief distribution, especially at the highest Reynolds number flow. Results are broadly consistent with earlier work, although this analysis is unique because of the focus on interfacial hydraulics, spatially averaged ‘patch scale’ metrics and a statistical approach to data analysis. An important implication is that observable differences in microtopography do not necessarily produce differences in interfacial hydraulics. An important observation is that appropriate roughness parameterizations for gravel‐bed rivers remain elusive, partly because the relative contributions to flow resistance of different aspects of bed microtopography are poorly constrained. © 2014 The Authors. Can rapidly accumulating Holocene peat profiles provide sub‐decadal resolution proxy climate data?

AbstractTo test the potential for developing sub‐decadal resolution records of ombrotrophic bog surface wetness (BSW), selected abrupt climate events were identified in cores from four sites in north‐west Europe and time‐slices over each event were investigated at 2–5‐mm resolution using peat humification, testate amoeba and plant macrofossil analyses. Age–depth models based on radiocarbon, spheroidal carbonaceous particle and tephra dates were applied and the error in these models was used to determine the effective temporal sampling resolution, which in most cases was sub‐decadal. Fine‐resolution results revealed some inconsistencies in the co‐variability of individual proxies and there was a lack of correspondence between some results from adjacent cores. However, we found evidence of abrupt shifts in BSW occurring over ca. 5–20 years, indicating a more rapid proxy response than identified in previous research. To maximize potential temporal resolution and produce reliable sub‐decadal BSW data in future research, we recommended that peat‐based studies should obtain the best possible chronological control, focus on sites with high species diversity and rapid accumulation rates and perform replicate coring, or use open peat sections where the stratigraphy can be clearly seen, to assess intra‐site differences in microtopography. Water source utilization and foliar nutrient status differs between upland and flooded plant communities in wetland tree islands

Tree islands in the Everglades wetlands are centers of biodiversity and targets of restoration, yet little is known about the pattern of water source utilization by the constituent woody plant communities: upland hammocks and flooded swamp forests. Two potential water sources exist: (1) entrapped rainwater in the vadose zone of the organic soil (referred to as upland soil water), that becomes enriched in phosphorus, and (2) phosphorus-poor groundwater/surface water (referred to as regional water). Using natural stable isotope abundance as a tracer, we observed that hammock plants used upland soil water in the wet season and shifted to regional water uptake in the dry season, while swamp forest plants used regional water throughout the year. Consistent with the previously observed phosphorus concentrations of the two water sources, hammock plants had a greater annual mean foliar phosphorus concentration over swamp forest plants, thereby supporting the idea that tree island hammocks are islands of high phosphorus concentrations in the oligotrophic Everglades. Foliar nitrogen levels in swamp forest plants were higher than those of hammock plants. Linking water sources with foliar nutrient concentrations can indicate nutrient sources and periods of nutrient uptake, thereby linking hydrology with the nutrient regimes of different plant communities in wetland ecosystems. Our results are consistent with the hypotheses that (1) over long periods, upland tree island communities incrementally increase their nutrient concentration by incorporating marsh nutrients through transpiration seasonally, and (2) small differences in micro-topography in a wetland ecosystem can lead to large differences in water and nutrient cycles.

Response of fringing vegetation to flooding and discharge of hypersaline water at Lake Austin, Western Australia

Patterns and dynamics of the salt marsh vegetation that surrounds many of the salt lake systems of arid/semi-arid Australia are poorly known. Lake Austin is a very large salt lake with extensive areas of fringing salt marsh; it is located in the arid Yilgarn Region of Western Australia. In this study, the changes in this vegetation over a 4-year period (1998–2002), during which both a major flooding event and addition of hypersaline groundwater from a nearby mining operation occurred, are reported. The monitoring program, based on Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) principles, was designed to detect impacts of discharging hypersaline water into the lake; however, the flooding event, the result of above average rainfall in early 2000, complicated the results. The rains of 2000 and subsequent inundation of the vegetation immediately fringing the lake bed and major inlet channels resulted in dramatic changes to the species composition of annual and short-lived species and growth of perennial species. Flooding resulted in substantial death and damage to perennial shrubs (particularly Halosarcia fimbriata) due most likely to a combination of several weeks/months of inundation and smothering by macroalgae and Ruppia, with smaller plants and those closer to the lake bed impacted upon to a greater degree. Seed germination and recruitment of new Halosarcia plants was substantial as floodwaters receded with the majority of these seedlings surviving some 2 years after flooding despite the severe drought that followed the flood. Growth rates of seedlings differed substantially and were linked to subtle differences in micro-topography. Recruitment following flooding was also demonstrated in in vitro experiments involving inundated soil cores, provided water was relatively non-saline (conductivity <30 mS cm−1). A conceptual model is proposed to explain changes in fringing vegetation in response to frequency, depth, period and salinity of flooding in relation to micro-topography. Despite the profound effect of flooding, impacts of discharge were identified, with changes in topsoil pH and salinity greater in areas closer to the discharge than those further away. Impacts on vegetation characteristics were not detected.

Influences of Microhabitat Constraints and Rock‐Climbing Disturbance on Cliff‐Face Vegetation Communities

Many researchers report that rock climbing has significant negative effects on cliff biota. Most work on climbing disturbance, however has not controlled for variation in microsite characteristics when comparing areas with and without climbing presence. Additionally, some researchers do not identify the style or difficulty level of climbing routes sampled or select climbing routes that do not represent current trends in the sport. We solved these problems by sampling climbing areas used by advanced "sport" climbers and quantifying differences in microtopography between climbed and control cliffs. We determined whether differences in vegetation existed between pristine and sport-climbed cliff faces when microsite factors were not controlled. We then determined the relative influence of the presence of climbing, cliff-face microtopography, local physical factors, and regional geography on the richness, abundance, and community composition of cliff-face vascular plants, bryophytes, and lichens. When we did not control for microsite differences among cliffs, our results were consistent with the majority of prior work on impacts of climbing (i.e., sport-climbed cliff faces supported a lower mean richness of vascular plants and bryophytes and significantly different frequencies of individual species when compared with pristine cliff faces). When we investigated the relative influences of microtopography and climbing disturbance, however the differences in vegetation were not related to climbing disturbance but rather to the selection by sport climbers of cliff faces with microsite characteristics that support less vegetation. Climbed sites had not diverged toward a separate vegetation community; instead, they supported a subset of the species found on pristine cliff faces. Prior management recommendations to restrict development of new climbing routes should be reevaluated based on our results.

Microtopographic control of vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen communities on cliff faces

Cliff faces worldwide have recently been recognized as sites that harbour ancient forests, endangered biota and high levels of biodiversity, but knowledge is limited of the physical factors organizing cliff-face vegetation communities. Two large scale (geographic), five local, and eight fine scale (microtopographic) physical factors were examined using regression and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) to determine what scale of physical factors best explains variation in cliff-face vegetation on the 785 km long Niagara Escarpment in southern Ontario, Canada. The richness, frequency and community composition of vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens were determined for 72 cliff-face quadrats to discern whether these vegetation groups followed different patterns in their responses to the measured physical factors. A total of 124 different taxa (consisting of 50 vascular plant species, 21 bryophyte species, and 53 lichen taxa) were found on the cliff faces sampled in this study, though only 28 of these taxa were present in more than 10% of the sampled quadrats. Vascular plant and bryophyte species richness and frequency, and lichen frequency were only significantly correlated with microtopographic factors, while lichen species richness was correlated with a variety of fine and local scale physical factors. The fine scale factor ‘volume of soil’, in particular, was highly correlated with variation in richness or frequency for all vegetation groups, with increasing volume of soil correlated with increasing vascular plant richness and frequency and decreasing bryophyte richness and lichen frequency. A suite of local and fine scale physical factors also explained large proportions of variation in cliff-face vegetation community composition. A large scale gradient in the vegetation community was detected, though it resulted from fine scale physical differences between sites rather than from a latitudinal gradient. These results suggest that distinct subcommunities of vegetation exist on cliff faces and correlate with fine scale differences in microtopography.
