The dietetic internship program has been re-engineered to prepare dietetic interns to be well-positioned for their advancement in a continually changing environment. This has been accomplished through the three curriculum development teams (Nutrition Therapy, Community/Wellness and Food Services Management). Administration of the program is guided by the 1997 ADA Standards of Education and the institution's eight strategic initiatives (Mission, Physician Alignment, Development and Management of the Clinical Continuum, Performance Improvement, Management Care and Marketing Strategies, and Regional Management Strategies). The culture of the institution and a partnership contract agreement system are the key to managing the program process and outcome. As a result of these changes, the program is able to meet the 1997 ADA Standards of Education, maintain quality, and reduce 35 percent of supervised staffing time. Furthermore, each intern has more opportunity for in-depth practice of technical, managerial and entrepreneurial skills in real-life settings. They experience being a member of a successful team and learning valuable leadership skills through participation in various projects that include multidisciplinary teams. The program also has greater flexibility in responding to the changes in the health care environment and supporting the intern's individual professional growth.
