The paper proposes the use of dielectric spectroscopy to measure changes in dielectric permittivity for soil subjected to compression. Density-dependent dielectric permittivity characteristics of soils for the entire range of obtained density, and thus for a significant parameter of soil properties corresponding with ideal conditions for plant growth as well as those inhibiting their growth were presented. Measurements were carried out for three soil types with different moisture content using an open-ended antenna probe (OE-A), operating in the frequency range of 20 MHz–1.2 GHz and a coaxial cell system in frequency range of 20 MHz–3 GHz. Experimental results showed that an increase in bulk density and volumetric water content of soil affects the complex dielectric permittivity spectrum – a model for this relationship was proposed. Soil dielectric permittivity as a parameter reflecting soil moisture and density can be useful in assessing soil quality.
