Integral and Integrated Principles: Alternative Solutions to Overcome the Dichotomy of Islamic Education in Indonesia

Education is currently experiencing a decline due to the frequent imbalance between general education and religious education, especially Islamic religion, resulting in the emergence of educational dichotomy. This research was made with the aim of examining and understanding the dichotomy problems that occur in Indonesia. The type of research used is qualitative using literature review, while the method used is the documentation method. So it can be explained that the dichotomy of education is a problem that is considered quite complicated because the dichotomy of education that is now happening in Indonesia has spread to various educational sectors. The historical roots of this dichotomy began with the entry of Dutch colonizers into Indonesia and changed the existing education system. On the basis of these problems, a solution is needed to overcome the dichotomy of education. The integral and integrated principle is the right solution in overcoming this problem, which with this principle can provide harmony between religious and general sciences.

The Essence of Education: Views of Classical and Contemporary Scholars

This research aims to describe the nature of education according to the thoughts of educational experts in the classical and contemporary eras. Ibnu Miskawaih, Al-Qabisi, and Imam Al Ghozali represent the classical era. At the same time, contemporary-era thinkers will explore the views of Mohammed Arkoun, M. Amin Abdullah, and Fazlur Rahman. This research uses a qualitative approach to the type of library research. The data collection technique uses documentation from written sources/references from books, research results and relevant research journals. The data analysis technique is carried out in data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The research results state that classical era experts' views regarding the nature of education are how education can form people who are faithful and devout; education should pay attention to the formation of Islamic morals and character. Meanwhile, in the contemporary era, experts see a dichotomy in education. The results of this research provide several solutions to ensure that education does not have dichotomies between religion and science in the world of education, which is differentiated from general education and religious education.

Islamic Boarding School And The Implementation Of Diversity Value

This article aims to explain the diversity in the concept of Islam in Bangka Island which consists of tolerance values, equality values, democracy values, and justice values. As for internalizing the value of diversity on Bangka Island, it includes four cultures, namely, religious culture, scientific culture, social culture, and political culture. Meanwhile, the pesantren's strategy in maintaining diversity is the absence of dichotomy in education, no ethnic and cultural exclusivity, teaching moderate understanding, instilling a sense of love for the motherland, and opportunities for women to develop intellectual power on an equal footing with men.

Efforts to Erode Dichotomies Using Integrative Learning Models in Islamic Religious Education

Science and religion have always been regarded as two conflicting and even conflicting regions. Fethullah Gülen's Epistemology of Islamic Education and its Implementation towards Integrated Islamic Education

This research is motivated by education in most Muslim countries which are still lagging behind and there is still a dichotomy between Islamic education and secular education. As a result, the Muslim generation has obstacles in contributing to the development of world civilization, which should reflect the Islamic principles of rahmatan lil 'alamin. This is because Islamic education does not adjust to the progress and competition of the times. The epistemological thought of education by Fethullah Gülen tries to provide a solution to this problem by trying to abolish the dichotomy in education by creating an integrated Islamic education system.
 The purpose of this study is to find out in depth the epistemology of Islamic education from the perspective of Fethullah Gülen and its implementation of integrated Islamic education. The results of this study are: 1) The essence of the epistemology of Gülen's Islamic education is hikma, i.e. being able to combine useful knowledge accompanied by its practice in life; 2) The source of the epistemology of Islamic education comes from the senses, reason and true reports (news) that come from other people or Allah's messengers; 3) The purpose of Islamic education is to create insan kamil who are able to master religious, social and scientific knowledge and practice them in life in order to create a world full of peace and global progress; 4) The integrated Islamic education model according to Fethullah Gülen is similar to the neo-modernism integration model, that is integrating Islamic tradition with the modernity of civilization.

The dichotomy of education that has swept the Islamic world is recognized as having created split of Muslim personalities. The dichotomy of education had resulted in an output crisis that is materialistic, individualistic, and the lack of spirituality. Kecenderungan positif ini mematahkan sikap skeptis kalangan yang beranggapan bahwa pesantren sebagai lembaga pendidikan Islam yang anti perubahan.
 Isu-isu seperti sekularisme, dikotomi, dan globalisasi berpengaruh terhadap perubahan pendidikan pesantren. Artikel ini secara spesifik membahas isu-isu tersebut melalui analisis telaah pustaka. Pesantren sebagai institusi pendidikan Islam diharapkan mampu bergerak maju sebagaimana majunya zaman. Pesantren sebagai institusi pendidikan Islam tetap berprinsip mempertahankan tradisi dan ciri khas dan terbuka terbuka terhadap pembaharuan.

The Policies of Islamic Religious Education in Schools and Universities (Correlation between Problems and Solutions)

Educational issues are never ending issues to be discussed because these issues concern on the matter of humans in giving the meaning and the direction to their existence. Education is a guidance conciously conducted by the educators toward physical and spiritual developments of the students in order to shape their personality. The shaping of personality is closely related to the role of religious education. Therefore, religious education has pivotal role in national education system. However, nowadays Islamic Education still faces various problems in more complex aspects, namely education dichotomy, curriculum, purposes, resources, and Islamic education management. The improvement efforts have not yet been conducted fundamentally. The efforts to update and upgrade Islamic education are often partial and not comprehensive; moreover, most systems and Islamic education institutions have not yet been managed professionally. Regarding the above problems, two approaches to overcome the weaknesses of Islamic religious education policy in schools are needed, namely the approach of policy advocacy and the approach of Islamic Religious Education curriculum development. Accordingly, Islamic Religious Education can be the basis in shaping personality of the graduates of Indonesia educational institutions in accordance with their adhered religion.

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH DUALITY – THE DETERMINING CHARACTERISTIC OF HIGHER EDUCATION

The article, based on new empirical data, semantic analysis and systematic interpretation of the concepts of “education”, “science”, “research and development” (R&D), deepens and expands the understanding of higher education as a dichotomy of education and research. The subordinated character of such dichotomy is demonstrated, when the main (primary) role belongs to education and supplementary (secondary), although essential, to R&D. It is argued that the first two subordinately related keywords in the mission statements of higher education institutions – “education” and “research” – serve as canonical birthmark and a criterion for identifying these institutions. The immanent dichotomy of higher education can be implemented in two ways: 1) as the dual “teaching and research” function of the academic staff (the main mode) and 2) via organization of R&D as a separate HEI activity, additionally to the main mode. According to the ratio of educational and research activities, HEIs can be divided into two types: academic (research) and professional (applied). By calculating the magnitude of correlations, it is proved that organization of national higher education and research areas depends on the size of the country and its resources, which overrules the incorrect comparison of Ukraine with small countries. The juxtaposition of universities and research institutions (academies) in Ukraine in order to diminish the role of the latter, following the example of small countries, instigates the disorganisation of domestic higher education and research areas and contradicts the laws and trends of world development.

Vocational education and the binary higher education system in the Netherlands: higher education symbiosis or vocational education dichotomy?

The Netherlands has a binary higher education system in which academic education and higher professional education at EQF levels 5–8 co-exist. There is also secondary vocational education at EQF levels 1 up to 4. In this paper, I analyse policy documents resulting from the Bologna Process and argue that under neo-liberal conditions, higher professional education brings opportunities for both students and employers, but also creates a socio-economic tension in terms of employability. The gap between higher professional education and secondary vocational education adds to the formation of a labour market in which higher professional education graduates are prepared to an international labour market but employability pressure is being put on lower skilled employees, creating unequal employability opportunities for vocational education graduates.

This article tries to explore the above insight because the discourse of the dichotomy in education seems to give an image that there is a separation between general science and religious science, whereas the dichotomy in leadership and management also gives an image that there is a separation between the leader and manager.

Gender Equality in Preschool STEM Programs as a Factor Determining Russia’s Successful Technological Development

The article discusses the importance of introducing training programs for preschool children that allow them to master basic knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM subjects) as an academic basis for the technological transition that is currently taking place in the modern world. It is shown that when preschool students study STEM subjects, it gives them a great advantage later in elementary, middle, and high school. As a result of our investigation of STEM subjects for preschoolers and the gender considerations that should be incorporated into successful teaching strategies, we have concluded that together with the preparation and institutionalization of such training programs it is necessary to teach the designers of educational programs as well as educators about the specific features that characterize how boys and girls learn. A curriculum that takes gender differences into account is one that does not allow the development of a gender dichotomy in education. Rather, it should ensure that both boys and girls have equal motivation and a positive attitude about STEM subjects.

A renewed vision for higher education in public health.

We are transforming the educational strategy at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health guided by 5 principles: (1) development of T-shaped competencies (breadth across fields, depth in primary fields), (2) flexible and modular design accommodating different needs through the lifecycle, (3) greater experiential learning, (4) 3 levels of education (informative, formative, and transformative learning), and (5) integrated instructional design (online, in person, and in the field). We aim to create an arc of education resulting in continuous learning. We seek to bridge the research versus education dichotomy and create research-teaching congruence, adapting the values of peer review and quality assessment that we routinely accept for grant and article review to education.
