Dos experimentos de campo se establecieron en las Subestaciones de Isabela y Fortuna, Puerto Rico para evaluar yerbicidas en el control químico de yerbajos en batatales. Los yerbicidas preemergentes se aplicaron mezclados con agua cubriendo toda el área 2 días después de sembrarse la variedad Miguela. A las 8 semanas de aplicados los tratamientos aún se notaba un control efectivo de los yerbajos con el uso de difenamida (N,N-dimetilo-2,2-difenilacetamida) solo, en combinación con Chloramben (3-amino-2,5- acido diclorobenzoico) o con DCPA (dimetilo-2,3,5 ,6-tetraclorotereftalato). No hubo síntomas visuales de daño al follaje como consecuencia de los yerbicidas. No hubo diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos de yerbicidas en cuanto a rendimiento de batatas por acre, entre las parcelas tratadas con yerbicidas y los obtenidos en las desyerbadas a mano.

Chlorobenzoic acids and derivatives: analysis of mixtures by thin-layer chromatography

Thin-layer chromatographic (silica gel G)RF values were obtained for the three isomeric monochlorobenzoic and two dichlorobenzoic acids. The p-bromophenacyl esters of benzoic, o-, m- and p-chlorobenzoic, and 3,4-dichlorobenzoic acids were prepared and RF values obtained. The esters of benzoic, m-chlorobenzoic and 3,4-dichlorobenzoic acids were separated from the ternary mixture by thin-layer chromatography. When 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazine in hydrochloric acid solution reacted with the esters spotted at the origin, subsequent thin-layer chromatography gave characteristic two-spot patterns for each, and this facilitated recognition of the type of mixture of monochlorobenzoic acids. An explanation is given of the formation of two hydrazones from each ester.

THE EFFECT OF TWO HERBICIDES, BROMOXYNIL AND DICAMBA, ON THE TRANSPIRATION OF TARTARY BUCKWHEAT AND BARLEY

Tartary buckwheat, Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn., sprayed with a quick- and a slow-acting herbicide continued to transpire water until the plants were dead. The quick-acting contact herbicide bromoxynil, 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxy benzonitrile, reduced transpiration by 50% within one day and by over 80% within two days afer spraying. The systemic herbicide dicamba, 2-methoxy-3,6 dichlorobenzoic acid, did not reduce transpiration to near this level until 10 days after spraying. These transpiration differences due to the differential herbicide activity were highly significant. When buckwheat and barley were grown together and harvested 11 days after spraying, removal of the weed with these herbicides resulted in significantly heavier barley seedlings with more tillers per plant than in the untreated check. The differences in barley dry weight and culms per plant between the bromoxynil and dicamba treatments were not significant at this early growth stage. However, when harvested at the fully headed stage, the earlier removal of the buckwheat competition with the bromoxynil treatment resulted in the production of more dry weight of barley and heads per plant than with the slower acting dicamba.

The Uptake of Growth Substances: VII. THE ACCUMULATION OF CHLORINATED BENZOIC ACIDS BY STEM TISSUES2

The courses of uptake of benzoic acid (BA) and its 2-chloro- (2-CBA), 2,4-dichloro- (2,4-DCBA), 2,5-dichloro- (2,5-DCBA), and 2,3,6-trichloro- (2,3,6-TCBA) derivatives, all containing 14C in the carboxyl group, have been investigated, employing stem segments of Pisum sativum, Gossypium hirsutum, and Avena sativa. From comparisons of the rates of accumulation by segmetns of different length it is conclueded that for each compound uptake proceeds largely or wholly via the cut surfaces. The initial uptake of BA and 2-CBA by segments of Pisum is depressed as the pH of the solution is raised from 4 to 6.5, but the fall is less rapid than the decrease in the proportion of undissociated molecules. For all three species, BA and 2-CBA, which induced no extension growth, were accumulated at a more or less constant rate. By contrast, the course of uptake of 2,3,6-TCBA, a powerful auxin, exhibited marked deviations from a linear pattern, especially in Avena where uptake became negative between four and six hours. This loss of radioactivity from the tissues was due to the net egress of 2,3,6-TCBA itself into the external solution. In Avena the two dichloro-benzoic acids (2,4-DCBA and 2,5-DCBA) have intermediate trens: net accumulation declined almost to zero but subsequently recovered and proceeded at a rapid rate. These findings are discussed in relation to prior studies of the uptake of substituted phenoxyacetic acids and the concepts of Type 1 and Type 2 accumulation. It is proposed that accumulation of BA and 2-CBA is largely governed by a stable Type 2 process while the initial uptake of the powerful auxins, 2,3,6-TCBA and 2,5-DCBA proceeds via an unstable system, similar or identical to Type 1 accumulation.
