Sustainable production of graphene quantum dots from rice husk for photo‐degradation of organochlorine pesticides

AbstractThe controlled synthesis of two‐dimensional nanocrystals of graphene particles instead of amorphous carbon quantum dots is highly challenging and requires tremendous efforts to optimize the reaction conditions. It has been observed that as a significant bio‐compatible zero‐dimensional material, graphene quantum dots are considered as a novel material for opto‐electronics, energy, biological and environmental applications. However, very few are known about their utilization in photocatalytic degradation of pesticides, especially organochlorine pesticides which are resistant to removal by conventional wastewater treatment methods. In this work, graphene quantum dots were produced from rice husk at relatively low temperatures, resulting in an average particle size of 3.3 nm. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy clearly showed the formation of spherical quantum dots having lattice fringes and the selected area electron diffraction pattern showed the crystallinity of the graphene quantum dots. A study of photodegradation of three highly toxic organochlorine pesticides namely, dichlorodiphenyl trichloro ethane, cypermethrin and fenvalerate were carried out using as‐synthesized graphene quantum dots from rice husk. Interestingly, all these pesticides were found to be degraded around 60 % to 70 % under visible light conditions. It confirmed that synthesized graphene quantum dots from rice husk can act as prominent photocatalyst for the degradation of pesticides and other pollutants.

Association between prenatal exposure to indoor residual spraying insecticides and infection rates among South African children participating in the Venda Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and their Environment (VHEMBE)

In 2021, 53 countries conducted indoor residual spraying (IRS), the application of insecticides such as dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) or pyrethroids to the walls of homes to control malaria. Animal studies show that these insecticides can increase susceptibility to infections but only one human study was conducted in a population from an area where IRS is applied. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate whether maternal exposure to DDT, its breakdown product dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (DDE) or pyrethroid insecticides is associated with symptoms of infection among children living in a region of South Africa were IRS is conducted annually. As part of the Venda Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and their Environment (VHEMBE) we measured maternal serum concentrations of DDT and DDE, and urinary concentrations of four pyrethroid metabolites in peripartum samples. Poisson regression models with robust variance estimates were used to investigate associations with the rates of infection symptoms between ages 3.5–5 years among 629 children as assessed based on caregiver interviews. Multiple pyrethroid metabolites were associated with infection symptoms. For instance, cis-DBCA was associated with increased rates of ear infection (Incidence Rate Ratio for a 10-fold increase (IRR10) = 1.4; 95 % Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.0, 2.1) and persistent diarrhea (IRR10 = 2.1; 95 % CI = 1.2, 3.9), trans-DCCA was associated with increased rates of colds in children (IRR10 = 1.3; 95 % CI = 1.0, 1.6) and persistent fever (IRS10 = 1.4; 95 % CI = 1.0, 2.0), and 3-PBA was associated with increased rates of persistent fever (IRR10 = 1.8; 95 % CI = 1.0, 3.0). We found limited evidence of association between maternal DDE and DDT serum concentrations and infection symptoms. Results suggest that prenatal exposure to pyrethroid insecticides may be associated with infections among children from an area where IRS is conducted.

Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloroethane (DDT) Insecticide Polluted Soil Remediation by Bacteria Consortium with Co-Substrate Utilization

Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloroethane (DDT) is an organochlorine insecticide that are largely used on agriculture and health sectors. DDT is an organic pollutant that are difficult to be dissolved and tend to survive in the environment for a long time because it is highly stable and persistent. DDT insecticide residue is still discovered in the soil even though its utilization has been stopped years ago and still negatively impacting human life and the environment through bio accumulation and bio magnification. Bioremediation is a potential method to remove recalcitrance compound such as DDT. The objective of this study is to gather and analyze information on DDT degradation by bacteria consortium with co-substrate addition. Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas stutzeri bacteria consortium were utilized to remediate DDT with glucose, sucrose, and yeast extract as cosubstrates. During 72 hours of observation, the three co-substrates namely yeast extract, glucose, and sucrose are able to degrade 75%, 56% and 39.55% of 10 ppm DDT. Yeast is the most ideal co-substrate to assist bacteria consortium growth and to degrade DDT. The implementation of pilot scale land treatment bioremediation is planned to be at 50m3, with dimension of 20m length, 5m wide, and 0.5m high. The efficiency of the removal reached 90% with 67 hours of detention time.

Adsorption Efficiency of Carbon Materials for the Removal of Organic Pollutants: DDT from Aqueous Solution.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used to adsorb organic pollutants from wastewater due to their porous structure, large specific surface area, and unique physical and chemical properties. Examining the interactions between pollutant molecules and carbon nanotubes is an important topic in the applications of nanotubes for the removal of pollutants. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) and metadynamics simulations were used to investigate the adsorption mechanism of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) pollutants on carbon nanotubes. Obtained results revealed that functionalized CNTs (f-CNTs) with active groups exhibited significantly enhanced performance compared to pristine CNTs. The adsorption isotherms were analyzed at different DDT concentrations, and it was found that increasing the concentration of DDT molecules led to a decrease in system energy and increased stability. The presence of biosurfactants as functional groups on the CNTs enhanced the interaction between DDT molecules and the nanotubes. In CNT, the addition of DDT increases the van der Waals energy from -176.83 kJ/mol for 3 DDT molecules to -2237.88 kJ/mol for 50 DDT molecules. In the case of f-CNT, the van der Waals energy in the system with 50 DDT molecules is about 2061.05 kJ/mol more negative than the system with 3 DDT molecules. The number of contacts between the adsorbent and DDT molecules increased over time, indicating increased adsorption interaction. The radial distribution functions (RDF) of DDT molecules around CNTs and f-CNTs showed the highest probability of finding DDT molecules at a distance of about 0.5 nm from the adsorbent surface. The study provided valuable insights into the adsorption process and can guide future experimental studies.

A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer based on an eco-friendly deep eutectic solvent for the selective recognition of dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane and its degradation products in fruits and vegetables

A new magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer was successfully synthesized using a ternary deep eutectic solvent derived from caffeic acid-choline chloride-formic acid as a functional monomer, thymol-menthol deep eutectic solvent as a template, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linker, potassium peroxodisulfate as an initiator, and aqueous ethanol solution (90% (v/v)) as a porogen. The synthesized material was characterized and applied for magnetic solid-phase extraction of dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane and its degradation products. Optimization of the extraction condition was carried out using the central composite design and response surface methodology. The good analytical performance of magnetic solid phase extraction/gas chromatography‒mass spectrometry using the proposed adsorbent shows a wide linear range of 0.07–500 ng g−1 with R2 greater than 0.992. Low detection limits and quantitation limits were observed in the ranges of 0.01–2.00 ng g−1 and 0.07–2.50 ng g−1, respectively. The precisions shown in terms of relative standard deviations were lower than 7.0% for intraday (n=5) and 8.6% for interday (n=5 × 3) experiments. The proposed method was applied for preconcentration and determination of dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane and its degradation products in fruit and vegetable samples. The satisfactory recoveries of the real samples at three spiked concentrations were obtained in the range of 79.1%–110.9% with RSDs lower than 7.5%. The findings highlight the importance of developing efficient sorbents for the enrichment of persistent organic pollutants in food matrices.

Identification of coastal pesticide pollutants as potent inhibitors of Bacillus pasteurii urease mediated calcium carbonate precipitation: a computational approach

Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) through urease enzyme has attained a lot of recognition in various fields of civil engineering and geotechnology for stabilizing the strength of soil and various concrete materials. The activity of urease has been found to be affected by various factors like temperature, substrate concentrations, pH of the medium, presence of inhibitors, etc. Through this study, the outcome of the interaction of pesticides (commonly found in Indian coastal regions) on Bacillus pasteurii urease, a major organism reported for MICP studies has been investigated in silico. The results from the study revealed that the enzyme has higher interactions of −4.1, −3.2, and −3.4 kJ/mol with common pesticides like dichloro diphenyl dichloro ethane(DDD), dichloro diphenyl trichloroe thane (DDT), and methyl parathion of organochlorides and organophosphates class. From the molecular dynamics simulation analysis, complex 1 (DDD -receptor) has been found to have the highest and more compact structure followed by methyl parathion -receptor. Prime MM-GBSA analysis also revealed the highest binding energy of −27.8 kcal/mol with the protein and DDD. Thus, it can be inferred from the current study that pesticides, particularly, DDD, DDT, and methyl parathion present in the coastal areas may have an impact on urease. This interaction can result in the inhibition of the urease activity of B. pasteurii, thus preventing the biomineralization process. This study would be the first report on the computational approach to understanding the interaction of prominent pesticides on the coastal region and B. pasteurii urease. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Interventions in scholarly communication: Design lessons from public health

Many argue that swift and fundamental interventions in the system of scholarly communication are needed. However, there are substantial disagreements over the short- and long-term benefits of most proposed approaches to changing the practice of science communication, and the lack of systematic, empirically based research in this area makes these controversies difficult to resolve. We argue that experience within public health can be usefully applied to scholarly communication. 
 Starting with the history of DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) application, we illustrate four ways complex human systems threaten reliable predictions and blunt ad-hoc interventions. We then show how these apply to interventions in scholarly publication – open access based on the article processing charge (APC), and preprints – to yield surprising results. Finally, we offer approaches to help guide the design of future interventions: identifying measures and outcomes, developing infrastructure, incorporating assessment, and contributing to theories of systemic change.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in adipose tissue of women from Grand Tunis and their association with demographic factors and dietary habits

Dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and polychloronated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in 25 woman adipose tissues collected in 2016 from Grand Tunis, Tunisia. p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDT, HCB and β-HCH were the dominant organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in decreasing order in all samples. The total OCP levels varied from 79 to 343 ng g−1 lipid with a median value of 189 ng g−1 lipid and DDTs contributed approximately 88% to sum OCP. The ratio of p,p’-DDT/p,p’-DDE across all samples is below one, which suggests mainly historic exposure but may indicate some recent exposure to the banned pesticide. The median concentration of PCBs was 109 ng g−1 lipid and ranged between 27 and 204 ng g−1 lipid. PCB-153, PCB-180, PCB-138 and PCB-170 were the most abundant congeners, which contributed about 78% of the total PCBs. Spearman analysis showed that dominant organochlorine compounds (OCs) are highly positive correlated except for PCB-28/31, indicating that women from Tunis are exposed via similar routes. Inhalation exposure could be a possible pathway for the uptake of the less chlorinated congeners. We found positive and statistically significant association with subjects age for HCB (r = 0.517; p = 0.009) and PCBs (r = 0.65; p = 0.001) levels and a weak age-dependent accumulation was found for HCHs (r = 0.375; p = 0.065) and DDTs (r = 0.388; p = 0.056). The concentrations of OC subgroups were not associated with BMI, parity and residence. No association was observed between fish, red/white meat, milk and dairy products consumption and levels of HCB, HCHs and PCBs. DDTs levels were significantly correlated only with milk (p = 0.048) and milk products (p = 0.047) intake.

Ligand-Ligand-Interaction-Dominated Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles at the Oil/Water Interface: An Atomic-Scale Simulation.

The self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) into ordered superlattices is a powerful strategy to fabricate functional nanomaterials. Subtle variations in the interactions between NPs will influence the self-assembled superlattices. Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, we explore the self-assembly of 16 gold NPs, 4 nm in diameter, capped with ligands at the oil-water interface, and quantify the interactions between NPs at the atomic scale. We demonstrate that the interaction between capping ligands rather than that between NPs is dominant during the assembly process. For dodecanethiol (DDT)-capped Au NPs, the assembled superlattice is highly ordered in a close-packed configuration at a slow evaporation rate, while it is disordered at a fast evaporation rate. When replacing the capping ligands with stronger polarization than DDT molecules, the NPs form a robust ordered configuration at different evaporation rates due to the stronger electrostatic attraction between capping ligands from different NPs. Moreover, Au-Ag binary clusters exhibit similar assembly behavior with Au NPs. Our work uncovers the nonequilibrium nature of NP assembly at the atomic scale and would be helpful in rationally controlling NPs superlattice by changing passivating ligands, solvent evaporation rate, or both.

Putative interactions between transthyretin and endosulfan II and its relevance in breast cancer

The unregulated use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) has been linked to spread of breast cancer (BC), but the underlying biomolecular interactions are unknown. Using a case-control study, we compared OCP blood levels and protein signatures among BC patients. Five pesticides were found in significantly higher concentrations in breast cancer patients than in healthy controls: p′,p′ dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (DDT), p′p′ dichloro diphenyl dichloroethane (DDD), endosulfan II, delta-hexachlorocyclohexane (dHCH), and heptachlor epoxide A (HTEA). According to the odds ratio analysis, these OCPs, which have been banned for decades, continue to raise the risk of cancer in Indian women. Proteomic analysis of plasma from estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients revealed 17 dysregulated proteins, but transthyretin (TTR) was three times higher than in healthy controls, which is further validated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies revealed a competitive affinity between endosulfan II and the thyroxine-binding site of TTR, pointing towards the significance of the competition between thyroxin and endosulfan, resulting in endocrine disruption leading to breast cancer. Our study sheds light on the putative role of TTR in OCP-mediated BC, but more research is needed to decipher the underlying mechanisms that can be used to prevent the carcinogenic effects of these pesticides on women's health.

Impact of pesticides on agro products, health and environment

Pesticides are substances used by human being to kill or deter organisms (pests) that threaten our health and wellbeing of pets and livestock or cause damage to crops. Antibiotics in the medical sense are excluded, but included are insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, molluscicides and rodenticides among others. Of these, insecticides (to control insects) and herbicides (for controlling unwanted vegetation) are used in the largest quantities. They are also concerned that birds, fish and other beneficial organisms may be adversely affected by pesticides. The insecticidal activity of some naturally occurring compounds such as nicotine and pyrethrum derived respectively from the tobacco plant and certain chrysanthemum species has been known for centuries. These have since been supplemented by inorganic compounds for insect control and sulphur and copper based compounds for fungus control. Discovery of the insecticidal activity of a number of synthetic organic compounds such as Organochlorines like Dichloro-diphenyl trichloroethane (D.D.T.). Benzene Hexachloride (BHC) already synthesised as chemicals in the previous century.

Chlorinated persistent organic pollutants in human breast milk in the Miyagi Prefecture disaster-affected area 1 year after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011

In the Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011, an earthquake and accompanying tsunami struck the Tohoku region of northeastern Japan. Buildings collapsed and the tsunami spread waste, including hazardous materials. This study aimed to determine the concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the breast milk of mothers living in the disaster-affected area of Sendai 1 year after the earthquake. Temporal trends in the POPs concentrations were evaluated by comparison with previous studies. One hundred breast milk samples were obtained from lactating mothers at a hospital in Sendai in 2012. The results were compared with those from other years to examine whether there were changes in the POPs concentrations after the earthquake. We measured polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides, such as chlordanes, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) with negative chemical ionization, and dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites using GC-MS with electron impact ionization. The mean total PCBs (11 congeners), total chlordane, and total DDT concentrations were 76.2 ng/g lipid, 39.8 ng/g lipid, and 73.5 ng/g lipid, respectively. For the samples collected in 2012, the concentrations of POPs in breast milk showed minimal changes compared with results from previous years for samples collected at the same hospital in Sendai. Our study demonstrates that 1 year after the earthquake and tsunami, the concentrations of chlorinated POPs in breast milk had not changed substantially.

Evaluation of the spatiotemporal variations of organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the forests of the Himalaya and Hengduan mountains using tree bark and tree core samples

There have been few reports of the large-scale spatial distribution and long-term historical variations of pollutants in high-altitude forests. Tree bark and tree core samples were collected from forests in the Himalaya and Hengduan mountains to determine the spatiotemporal variations of persistent organic pollutants. The average concentrations of dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tree bark samples were 9.09, 0.10, 0.13, 0.11and 26 ng/g dry weight, respectively, and 1.30, 0.02, 0.17, 0.07 and 186 ng/g dry weight, respectively, in tree core samples. Higher levels of these pollutants were observed in the forests on the southern slopes of the Himalaya (Nepal) and the southern part of the Hengduan mountains (Yunnan, China). Lower concentrations of these pollutants were found in the interior of the Tibetan Plateau on the northern slopes of the Himalaya as a result of the blocking effect of these mountain ranges. The concentrations of DDTs and HCHs in Himalayan tree cores showed increasing trends from 1956 to 1975 when they were used as pesticide extensively worldwide, especially in India. Peak concentrations of DDTs, HCHs and PAHs in tree cores of Qamdo located in Hengduan Mountains were observed in 2013, which were consistent with the history of industrial and agricultural development in Sichuan. This study provides new insights into the impact of atmospheric pollutants in South and Southeast Asia.

The Cichlidae fish Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) has suitability as a sentinel species for changes caused by xenobiotics?

Industrial wastewater and agricultural practices are among the main activities discharging organic pollutants, such as Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and organochlorine insecticides (e.g. DDT - dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane), to the environment. In this study, we used the native Cichlidae fish species Geophagus brasiliensis as a sentinel to evaluate the hepatic 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase EROD activity, a biomarker of exposure to CYP1A-inducing pollutants, to assess the bioavailability of xenobiotics in two reaches of a large lotic system in Southeast Brazil: a less disturbed area (site 1) in the upper stretch, and an area in the middle stretch, which receives various industrial and agricultural effluents from upstream cities (site 2). In addition, G. brasiliensis were exposed to a single dose of 50 mg kg-1 beta-naphthoflavone (BNF) or of 50 mg kg-1 dimethylbenzoanthracene (DMBA) to test the effects on, respectively, the hepatic EROD activity in S9 supernatant fraction, and the frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes three days after the i.p. treatments, and compared to an unexposed group, to test its potential as a sentinel for biomonitoring studies. The EROD activity was approximately two-fold higher in fish from the impacted stretches than in fish from the less disturbed stretches (p < 0.05). Micronuclei (MN) frequency was also significantly different (p < 0.01) in DMBA-treated fish. The induced EROD activity in the impacted site suggests that organochlorinated pollutants are reaching the biota of the Paraíba do Sul River, confirming the suitability of Geophagus brasiliensis as a useful sentinel species to detect changes caused by xenobiotics

Research progress on pesticide residues of Panax notoginseng

Panax notoginseng is a perennial Chinese medicinal plant, which has serious continuous cropping obstacles and is prone to a variety of diseases and insect pests during the growth process. At present, the prevention and control of pests and diseases is mainly carried out through chemical pesticides, and the consequent pesticide residues of P. notoginseng have attracted much attention. This study reviewed the types and detection methods of pesticide residues in P. notoginseng from 1981 to 2021, and compared the limits of pesticide residues in P. notoginseng in China and abroad to provide a reference for rational application of pesticides in P. notoginseng and quality control of medicinal materials, thereby promoting the sustainable development of the P. notoginseng industry in China. Currently, there are only 40 published papers on pesticide residues of P. notoginseng, which is indicative of a serious problem of insufficient research. At present, hundreds of pesticide residues in P. notoginseng can be detected simultaneously by using chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The pesticides detected have gradually changed from early prohibited ones, such as dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane(DDT), benzene hexachloride(BHC), and parathion, to low toxic ones(e.g., dimethomorph, procymidone, propicona-zole, and difenoconazole). The dietary risk from pesticide residues in P. notoginseng is low, which would not cause harm to consu-mers. This study concluded that in the future, the development of the quality standard for pesticide residues of P. notoginseng should be actively carried out. To increase the pesticides used in actual production in the quality standard based on the existing ones and to guide farmers to use pesticides scientifically will be the focus of future work.

A note on the insecticide susceptibility status of secondary malaria vector An. annularis in Jharkhand state of India.

An. annularis van der Wulp (1884) is the secondary malaria vector of importance in India. In Jharkhand state it is present in almost all the districts abundantly and transmits malaria. The development of resistance to Dichlorodipheny ltrichloroethane (DDT) in An. annularis was reported from various parts of India. The main objective of this study was to generate information on insecticide susceptibility status of An. annularis to DDT, malathion, deltamethrin and permethrin in different districts of Jharkhand state. Methods; Adult An. annularis female mosquitoes were collected form villages of six tribal districts Simdega (Kurdeg and Simdega CHC), Khunti (Murhu and Khunti CHCs), Gumla (Bharno and Gumla CHCs), West Singhbhum (Chaibasa and Bada Jamda CHCs), Godda (Poraiyahat and Sunderpahari (CHCs) and Sahibganj (Borio and Rajmahal CHCs). Insecticide susceptibility status was determined by using WHO tube test method against prescribed discriminatory dosages of insecticides, DDT - 4.0%, malathion - 5.0%, deltamethrin - 0.05% and permethrin - 0.75%. An. annularis was reported resistant to DDT in six districts, possible resistant to malathion in districts Gumla, Khuntiand Sahibganj and susceptible to deltamehrin (98% to100% mortality) and permethrin (100% mortality). An. annularis, the secondary vector species is associated with the transmission of malaria reported resistant to DDT and susceptible to pyrerthroids deltamethrin and permethrin. In view of large-scale distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in all the districts, the response to synthetic pyrethroid needs to be periodically monitored to assess the effectiveness.

Ensuring the purity of water resources in the Don River basin

Uncontrolled levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which are prohibited for use under the POPs Convention, are the environmental concerns and, when applied on a large scale, will disrupt entire ecosystems. The identification of their impact on the purity of water resources is relevant and affects the planning of water supply for the population and the economy, the justification of water management measures and the redistribution of water resources within the basin. The aim of the research was to identify the content of hazardous pesticides in the surface waters of water bodies of the river basin Don. The data on the concentrations of α-, γ-hexochlorocyclohexane (HCCH), dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT), dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethane (DDE), trifluralin, parathion methyl, karbofos, and fosalon were analyzed in surface waters and bottom sediments. It is noted that organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are found in most places (up to ’100%) and in the number of samples in the bottom sediments of the surface waters of the Don River. It is significant that in the water of water bodies of the Don basin, including in the Don River, the detection frequency of the most active γ-HCCH is detected more often than α-HCCH. In the context of the projected increase in fresh water consumption in the Don River Basin, measures are being discussed to protect water resources from pollution.

Organic Matter Causes Chemical Pollutant Dissipation Along With Adsorption and Microbial Degradation

Views on the entry of organic pollutants into the organic matter (OM) decaying process are divergent, and in part poorly understood. To clarify these interactions, pesticide dissipation was monitored in organic and mineral soils not adapted to contaminants for 241 days; in groundwater sediment slurries adapted to pesticides for 399 days; and in their sterilized counterparts with and without peat (5%) or compost-peat-sand (CPS, 15%) mixture addition. The results showed that simazine, atrazine and terbuthylazine (not sediment slurries) were chemically dissipated in the organic soil, and peat or CPS-amended soils and sediment slurries, but not in the mineral soil or sediment slurries. Hexazinone was chemically dissipated best in the peat amended mineral soil and sediment slurries. In contrast, dichlobenil chemically dissipated in the mineral soil and sediment slurries. The dissipation product 2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM) concentrations were lowest in the mineral soil, while dissipation was generally poor regardless of plant-derived OM, only algal agar enhanced its chemical dissipation. Based on sterilized counterparts, only terbutryn appeared to be microbially degraded in the organic soil, i.e., chemical dissipation of pesticides would appear to be utmost important, and could be the first response in the natural cleansing capacity of the environment, during which microbial degradation evolves. Consistent with compound-specific dissipation in the mineral or organic environments, long-term concentrations of pentachloroaniline and hexachlorobenzene were lowest in the mineral-rich soils, while concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DTT) and metabolites were lowest in the organic soils of old market gardens. OM amendments changed pesticide dissipation in the mineral soil towards that observed in the organic soil; that is OM accelerated, slowed down or stopped dissipation.

Historic Atmospheric Organochlorine Pesticide and Halogenated Industrial Compound Inputs to Glacier Ice Cores in Antarctica and the Arctic

Ice cores collected from polar ice sheets at Site M, Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica (Lat 75.00 S, Long 15.00 E), and Holtedahlfonna, Svalbard (Lat 79.13 N, Long 13.27 E), were analyzed for a net deposition of 25 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 16 organohalogen (chlorine/bromine) industrial compounds (OHICs). Long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) delivers contaminants to both sites, but the processes are different: Site M is affected by subsidence of air from the stratosphere to the Antarctic Plateau, while Holtedahlfonna is affected by air moving through the free troposphere. The sample from Site M is a composite core covering 1958–2000, while the Holtedahlfonna sample includes a historic record from 1953 to 2005 in six discrete samples. The five highest OCPs at Site M were chlorpyrifos, trans-chlordane, 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT), ß-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), and dieldrin, while at Holtedahlfonna, they were chlorpyrifos, γ-HCH, α-HCH, ß-HCH, and dieldrin. The five most abundant OHICs at Site M were three dichlorobenzenes (diCBs), 1,3-diCB, 1,4-diCB, 1,2-diCB, and 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene and 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene (tetraCB) and at Holtedahlfonna, they were the same three diCB, pentachloroanisole (PCA), and 1,2,4,5-tetraCB. Of the OHICs, only hexachlorobutadiene, PCA, and hexachlorobenzene were found in all six Holtedahlfonna ice-core segments. Principal component analysis of the OCP percent of total flux values shows no similar variance among the Holtedahlfonna core segments, the whole-core value, or Site M. The principal component analysis of OHIC shows no consistent variance among any of the samples except for two Holtedahlfonna segments with the lowest OHIC values in the core.

Spatial Anopheles arabiensis (Diptera: Culicidae) insecticide resistance patterns across malaria-endemic regions of Botswana

BackgroundSince the advent of the Green Revolution, pesticides have played an important role in the global management of invertebrate pests including vector mosquitoes. Despite optimal efficacy, insects often display insensitivity to synthetic insecticides owing to prolonged exposure that may select for resistance development. Such insecticide insensitivity may regress national and regional coordination in mosquito vector management and indeed malaria control. In Botswana, prolonged use of synthetic insecticides against malaria vectors have been practiced without monitoring of targeted mosquito species susceptibility status.MethodsHere, susceptibility status of a malaria vector (Anopheles arabiensis), was assessed against World Health Organization-recommended insecticides, across three malaria endemic districts. Adult virgin female mosquitoes (2–5 days old) emerging from wild-collected larvae were exposed to standardized insecticide-impregnated papers with discriminating doses.ResultsThe results showed resistance dynamics were variable in space, presumably as a result of spatial differences in insecticide use across malaria endemic districts and the types of insecticides used in the country. Overall, there was a reduced susceptibility of An. arabiensis for the pyrethroid lambda-cyhalothrin and for dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane [DDT], which have similar modes of action and have been used in the country for many years. The Okavango district exhibited the greatest reduction in susceptibility, followed by Ngamiland and then Bobirwa, reflective of national intervention strategy spraying intensities. Vector mosquitoes were, however, highly susceptible to carbamates and organophosphates irrespective of region.ConclusionsThese results provide important findings of vector susceptibility to insecticides recommended for vector control. The results highlight the need to implement insecticide application regimes that more effectively including regionally integrated resistance management strategies for effective malaria control and elimination.
