Bidentate group VB chelates Part V. Silver(I) complexes of some diphosphine and diarsine ligands

Silver(I) nitrate reacts with bisdiphenylphosphinomethane, 1,2-bisdiphenylphosphinoethane, 1,3-bisdiphenylphosphinopropane, cis-1,2-bisdiphenylphosphinoethylene, and o-phenylenebisdimethylarsine to form non-conducting complexes [(AgNO 3) 2.L]. The infrared spectra indicate monodentate nitrato groups, and the complexes are assigned a dimeric structure with single ligand bridges, a type of complex hitherto unknown to Ag 1 with bidentate phosphines and arsines. Attempts to prepare silver(II) complexes were unsuccessful.

Transition-metal dithiolene complexes. Part XXI. Iron, cobalt, and nickel complexes containing chelating diarsine, diphosphine, and related ligands

The complexes [M(L)(S–S)2]–[M = Fe or Co; (S–S)= S2C2(CN)2, S2C2(CF3)2, or S2C6Cl4; L =o-C6H4(AsMe2)2, Ph2AsCH2CH2AsMe2, cis-Ph2PCH:CHPPh2, Me2PhP, or Me2PhAs], [M(L)(S–S)2]0[M = Fe or Co; (S–S)= S2C2Ph2; L = Ph2AsCH2CH2AsPh2 or Me2PhAs], [Fe(Ph2As·CH2·CH2·AsPh2){S2C2(p-MeC6H4)2}2]0, [Ni{o-C6H4(AsMe2)2}{S2C2)CN)2}2]0, and [M{o-C6H4(AsMe2)2}2{S2C2(CN)2}]0(M = Fe or Co), have been prepared. It has been shown spectrally and by voltammetry that the species [M(L))S–S)2]–, where L =o-C6H4(AsMe2)2, Ph2AsCH2·CH2·AsPh2 and cis-Ph2P·CH:CH·PPh2, are six-co-ordinate, whereas the species [M(L))S–S)2]0, where L = Ph2As·CH2·CH2·AsPh2, are five-co-ordinate. The effect, on E½-values of the various couples studied, of conjugation within the chelating Lewis base ligand framework is discussed, and a Lewis base donor atom influence on half-wave potentials has been observed. The voltammetric behaviour of [M{o-C6H4(AsMe2)2}2{S2C2(CN)2}]0 was unexceptional.

Crystal structure of decacarbonyl-µ-[1,2-bis(dimethylarsino)tetrafluorocyclobutene-As,As]-triangulo-triruthenium [(Me2AsCC(AsMe2)CF2·CF2)Ru3(CO)10

Decacarbonyl-µ-[1,2-bis(dimethylarsino)tetrafluorocyclobutene-As, As]-triangulo-triuthenium, [(Me2As[graphic omitted]F2)Ru3(CO)10] crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121, a= 8·594, b= 18·795, c= 16·69 A, Z= 4. The structure was solved by Patterson and Fourier methods applied to Mo-Kα diffractometer data, and was refined by least-squares procedures to a final R of 0·076 for 1828 observed (of a total of 2028) reflexions. The compound is a derivative of Ru3(CO)12 in which one equatorial carbonyl group on each of two ruthenium atoms is replaced by an arsenic atom of the diarsine ligand so that the plane of the diarsine ligand is twisted 18° with respect to the plane of the ruthenium triangle. Ru–Ru bond distances are 2·831, 2·831, and 2·858 A the difference between the short and long bond lengths being significant in terms of the bonding characteristics of the ligand.

Crystal structure of octacarbonylbis-µ-[bis(dimethylarsino)tetrafluorocyclobutene-AsAs]-triangulo-triruthenium

Crystals of octacarbonylbis-µ-[bis(dimethylarsino)tetrafluorocyclobutene-AsAs]-triangulo-triruthenium, [graphic omitted] (CO)8, are orthorhombic, space group Pbcn, a= 9·07, b= 18·53, c= 21·81 A, Z= 4 (one-half molecule per asymmetric unit). The structure was determined with Mo-Kα diffractometer data by direct and Fourier methods, and was refined by least-squares procedures to a final R of 0·078 for 1507 observed (of a total of 1712) reflexions. The molecule lies on a crystallographic two-fold rotation axis, and is best described as a derivative of Ru3(CO)12 in which two carbonyls on one ruthenium atom and one carbonyl on each of the other ruthenium atoms are replaced by the arsenic atoms of the bidentate diarsine ligands, in such a way that each ligand bridges two ruthenium atoms, and one Ru–Ru bond remains unbridged. This unbridged Ru–Ru bond (2·785 A) is significantly shorter than the bridged bonds (2·853 A) and than those of the parent Ru3(CO)12(average 2·848 A). The skeletons of the diarsine ligands do not deviate significantly from planarity, the plane of each ligand being twisted 18° with respect to the plane of the ruthenium triangle. The mean Ru–As bond length is 2·407 A.

Ligand-field transitions in tertiary phosphine and arsinecomplexes of ruthenium(II) and osmium(II)

Absorption and emission studies of complexes of ruthenium(II) and osmium(II)with diphosphine and diarsine ligands are reported. Low-intensity bands were observed in the visible and near ultraviolet for the Ru(II) complexes and assigned to 1 A 1 g → 1 E g , 1 A 2 g ( d-d) transitions based upon a tetragonal model. Trans-dichlorodi-[1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]ruthenium-(II) displayed a green emission of short life which is assigned to a 1 E g → 1 A 1 g ( d-d) fluorescence. The weak bands observed in absorption for trans-dichlorodi-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]osmium(II) are assigned to 1 A 1 g → 3 E g , 3 A 2 g ( d-d) transitions on a tetragonal model. Luminescence from this compound was observed and is assigned to a 1 E g → 1 A 1 g ( d-d) fluorescence analogous to the ruthenium fluorescence. Jørgensen's rules for the relative splitting of (5 d) 6 Os(II) states versus (4 d) 6 Ru(II) states in similar chemical environments were employed as an aid in interpreting the spectra. It is proposed that diarsine ligands lie under diphosphine ligands in the spectrochemical series.
