History of organic pollution in montane lake Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia, inferred from a sediment core

In arid regions, montane lakes are valuable water sources and play important ecological roles. However, recent human-induced inputs of organic pollutants are threatening lake ecology in such regions and becoming a matter of great concern. To investigate pollutant histories and sources, we measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes in a dated sediment core that spans the last ∼350 years, from montane Lake Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia). Results showed that organic pollutants were delivered to Lake Issyk-Kul in four stages and that their concentrations increased from Stage I (∼1670–1800 CE) to Stage IV (∼2000–2010 CE). Furthermore, we tracked the sources of sedimented PAHs using their ratios combined with n-alkanes data. Ratios of PAHs Ant/(Ant + Phe), Flt/(Flt + Pyr) and Bap/BghiP indicated that inputs during Stage II (∼1800–1970 CE) and Stage III (∼1970–2000 CE) came mainly from high-temperature combustion of coal and vehicle emissions. PAHs in Stage I and Stage IV, however, were mainly derived from low-temperature combustion and petrogenic sources. Diagnostic PAH ratios, combined with the natural n-alkane ratio (NAR＜0) and unresolved complex mixtures (UCM), showed that the sources of PAHs in Stage I were mainly from erosion of bedrock and partly influenced by forest wildfires, different from the source during Stage IV, which was mainly from refined petroleum caused by accidental spills. Our assessment of the contamination history of the lake indicates that toxicity risk to the waterbody from sediment PAHs is low, but recent discharges arising from traffic deserve attention.

Seasonal and Emission Characteristics of PAHs in the Ambient Air of Industrial Complexes

Particulate and gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) samples (n = 108) were measured every six days from January to December 2022 at a representative point in the Korean Banwol National Industrial Complex. The measurement results revealed that the concentration of particulate Σ18 PAHs was 7.92 ± 4.04 ng/Sm3 in winter, 1.83 ± 1.99 ng/Sm3 in spring, 1.43 ± 0.95 ng/Sm3 in summer, and 2.58 ± 2.14 ng/Sm3 in autumn. The concentration of gaseous Σ18 PAHs was 3.32 ± 3.72 ng/Sm3 in winter, 6.34 ± 5.95 ng/Sm3 in spring, 8.33 ± 8.13 ng/Sm3 in summer, and 3.88 ± 1.71 ng/Sm3 in autumn. The results of the correlation analysis showed that particulate PAHs have positive relationships with PM10 and PM2.5 and negative relationships with temperature and O3. The diagnostic ratio and PAHs component slope showed that the emission source characteristics of the Banwol National Industrial Complex were dominated by biomass coal combustion over four seasons; however, the influence of petroleum combustion (automobile emissions) was not negligible. As for coal combustion, bituminous coal was the most influential, and lignite was relevant in summer and autumn.

Past fire dynamics inferred from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and monosaccharide anhydrides in a stalagmite from the archaeological site of Mayapan, Mexico

Abstract. Speleothems (cave stalagmites) contain inorganic and organic substances that can be used to infer past changes in local and regional paleoenvironmental conditions. Specific biomarkers can be employed to elucidate the history of past fires, caused by interactions among climate, regional hydrology, vegetation, humans, and fire activity. We conducted a simple solid–liquid extraction on pulverised carbonate samples to prepare them for analysis of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and three monosaccharide anhydrides (MAs). The preparation method requires only small samples (0.5–1.0 g); PAHs and MAs were measured by GC–MS and LC–HILIC–MS, respectively. Detection limits range from 0.05–2.1 ng for PAHs and 0.01–0.1 ng for MAs. We applied the method to 10 samples from a ∼ 400-year-old stalagmite from Cenote Ch'en Mul, at Mayapan (Mexico), the largest Postclassic Maya capital of the Yucatán Peninsula. We found a strong correlation (r = 0.75, p < 0.05) between the major MA (levoglucosan) and non-alkylated PAHs (Σ15). We investigated multiple diagnostic PAH and MA ratios and found that although not all were applicable as paleo-fire proxies, ratios that combine PAHs with MAs are promising tools for identifying different fire regimes and inferring the type of fuel burned. In the 1950s and 1960s, levoglucosan and Σ15 concentrations roughly doubled compared to other times in the last 400 years, suggesting greater fire activity at Mayapan during these two decades. The higher concentrations of fire markers may have been a consequence of land clearance at the site and exploration of the cave by Carnegie Institution archaeologists.

Spatio-temporal distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Tunis Lagoon: Concentrations in sediments and Marphysa sanguinea body and excrement

Despite international recognition as an important coastal wetland, Tunis Lagoon is still subjected to anthropogenic pressures. This article provides valuable data on the spatio-temporal distribution, toxicity, and origins of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Tunis Lagoon complex. PAHs' concentrations were measured in Marphysa sanguinea body and excrements, as well as in surface sediments. Total mean PAHs' concentrations reached a maximum of 2398 ng/g dry weight (DW) in sediments, 1007.19 ng/g DW in M. sanguinea, and 2602.05 ng/g DW in excrements. Diagnostic PAHs' ratios were used to determine whether PAHs' origins were pyrogenic or petrogenic. Our data showed a predominance of PAHs with a pyrogenic source. Principal component analysis showed PAHs isolated from polychaetes clearly separated from those measured in sediment and excrement. We believe that sediments are not the main source of bioaccumulation by M. sanguinea. Moreover, the toxicity of PAHs in sediments is moderate to high for benthic organisms.

Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in commercial olive oils by HPLC/GC/MS – Occurrence, composition and sources

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large class of organic compounds produced from incomplete combustion. Many PAHs are mutagenic and some are carcinogenic and pose a health risk to humans. Dietary intake of PAHs is a major route of exposure, where fats and edible oils are important contributors to overall dietary PAH exposure. Composed of hundreds of individual compounds as a complex mixture, only 16 PAHs are typically monitored in food and the environment. In this present study we analyzed 16 commercial olive oil samples from different countries of origin and type (virgin or refined oil) for their content of 45 PAHs using a high-performance liquid chromatograph coupled to a gas chromatograph with a mass spectrometric detector. The content of the 45 PAHs varied between 9.17 and 94.7 μg/kg (median: 30.1 μg/kg) in the different olive oil samples. Only one sample didn't meet the regulatory threshold levels for PAHs. The compositional profile of PAHs across the olive oil samples showed a high abundance of PAHs of lower molecular weights, and a large contribution of alkylated PAHs regardless of olive oil type. Direct contact with diesel exhaust emissions from mechanical harvesters has previously shown to affect PAH levels in olive oils. Using diagnostic PAH ratios, biomass/coal combustion and/or petroleum/fossil fuel combustion were indicated as important sources. Source apportionment by Positive Matrix Factorization revealed diesel exhaust emission and biomass combustion as the two major sources of PAHs followed by traffic emissions. This suggests that air quality may have a considerable impact on pollution levels in olive oils and thus indirectly affect dietary exposure.

Direct, Isomer-Specific Quantitation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soils Using Membrane Introduction Mass Spectrometry and Chemical Ionization.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are routinely screened for in soils, where quantitation of structural isomers is critical due to varying toxicity within PAH isomer classes. While chromatographic methods provide isomer resolution, such strategies are cost and time intensive. To address these challenges, we present condensed phase membrane introduction mass spectrometry using liquid electron ionization/chemical ionization (CP-MIMS-LEI/CI) as a direct mass spectrometry technique that provides rapid, quantitative results for PAH isomer measurements in soil samples. A methanol acceptor phase is flowed through a probe-mounted polydimethylsiloxane hollow fiber membrane directly immersed into a dichloromethane/soil slurry. PAHs and dichloromethane co-permeate the membrane into the acceptor solvent, whereas particulates and charged matrix components remain in the sample. A nanoflow of the membrane permeate is then directly infused into a LEI/CI interfaced triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Diagnostic PAH adduct ions were formed at either M + 45 ([M + CH2Cl + CH3OH-HCl]+) or M + 47 ([M + CHCl2-HCl]+). This allowed the development of specific MS/MS transitions for individual PAH isomers. These transitions were subsequently used for the direct analyses of PAHs in real soils where CP-MIMS-LEI/CI was shown to be rapid (15 soil samples/h) and sensitive (ng/g level detection limits). CP-MIMS-LEI/CI results compared well to those obtained using GC-MS (average percent difference of -9% across 9 PAHs in 8 soil samples), presenting a compelling argument for direct, quantitative screening of PAHs in soils by CP-MIMS-LEI/CI, particularly given the simple workflow and short analytical duty cycle.

Distribution, seasonal trends, and lung cancer risk of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in North China: A three-year case study in Dalian city.

Atmospheric monitoring data of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) over a three-year period were collected from an urban site in Dalian, northeast China. The status of PAHs in the atmosphere in Dalian were evaluated by assessing concentration levels, congener profiles, seasonal trends, primary source, inhalation exposure and the risk of developing lung cancer risk. Average concentrations were recorded for 53 PAHs (95±40ng/m3), 16 EPA priority PAHs (68±33ng/m3), 26 alkylated PAHs (17±7.6ng/m3) and 4 high-molecular-weight (302Da) PAHs (1.3±1.3ng/m3). Atmospheric PAH concentrations in winter were almost twice as high as those recorded in the summer, possibly due to enhanced local emissions and long-range transport of atmospheric PAHs during the winter. PAH congeners were dominated by phenatherene, fluoranthene, pyrene and fluorene, accounting for 46.0% of total ∑53PAH concentrations. Ship/vehicle emission and mixed combustion were identified as the main sources of PAHs using diagnostic PAH concentration ratios and principal component analysis-multiple linear regression. Benzo(a)pyrene toxicity equivalent concentration had an average content of 32±37 ng/m-3 over the sampling period, with dibenzo(a,h)anthracene (50.7%) and dibenzo(a,l)pyrene (26.4%) being the largest contributors. The risk of developing lung cancer due to inhalation exposure to outdoor PAHs was calculated at 12.0‰ using the overall population attributable fraction (PAF). Our results estimate that, due to PAH exposure in Dalian, the average excess lung cancer risk during a person's lifetime is 35.7 cancer cases per one million inhabitants.

Characteristics and Health Risks of Particulate Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitro-polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at Urban and Suburban Elementary Schools in Shanghai, China

PM2.1 was collected at urban and suburban elementary schools in Shanghai during two sampling periods in cold and warm seasons in 2007. Nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and ten nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in PM2.1 were determined. During both seasons, the concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs at urban and suburban schools were not significantly different(p >0.05) and were higher in the cold period than in the warm period. According to the diagnostic ratios, PAHs and NPAHs at both schools were subject to the mixed effects of vehicle emission and coal combustion during both periods. Moreover, the results of the backward trajectory showed that PAHs and NPAHs were more susceptible to external polluted air masses in the cold period. At both urban and suburban schools, the inhalation cancer risk of PAHs and NPAHs in PM2.1 for children during elementary period was dozens of times of the acceptable risk level regulated by the U.S.EPA, highlighting the adverse impact of exposure to PAHs and NPAHs on the healthy development of children.

Levels, Sources and Health Risk of PM2.5 and PM1-Bound PAHs across the Greater Athens Area: The Role of the Type of Environment and the Meteorology

Fine particulate matter (PM) has significant impacts on public health. Among its various chemical components, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of particular importance since they contribute to a large extent or even enhance its toxic potency. Despite the verified importance of the fine PM pollution for the Greater Athens Area (GAA), information on its composition with respect to the hydrocarbons is extremely scarce. This study aims to uncover the occurrence of the PM2.5 and PM1-bound PAHs across the GAA investigating the impact of the sources and meteorology on the configuration of their profile and potential health risk. The fieldwork took place at three different locations during two different mesoscale wind regimes. Using the Diagnostic PAHs’ Ratio method, the sources were identified while for the quantification of the emissions from the traffic and central heating sectors, the FEI-GREGAA emission inventory was taken into consideration. The potential health risk was estimated calculating the toxic/mutagenic equivalency factors. The peaks for both the PM mass and the PAHs were attributed to the intensity of the emissions. On the other hand, the carcinogenic/mutagenic risk was mainly influenced by the varying characteristics of traffic and especially for the background atmosphere, from the arriving air masses from longer scale distances.

Around three million premature deaths annually are ascribed to household air pollution (HAP) arising from inefficient burning of biomass and emissions of products of incomplete combustion. The developing-world response has been widespread adoption of improved cookstove (ICS) technologies. This exploratory study evaluates variation in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) attached to inhalable particulate matter (PM) in rural Malawi households adopting ICS use. PM literature supports HAP exposure to inhalable PM is lowered, albeit variably, compared to traditional fires, but remains significant. Similar is expected for PAH; however, datasets lack discerning PAH chemical-specific contributions to risks. The study introduces the Malawian context, invokes a PAH reconnaissance approach sampling kitchen soot ‘spots’ and residential dusts, and relates PAH occurrence to the two sample types collected and ICS types surveyed. The total PAH for dusts was low (c. 2 μg/g mean), with volatile 2-ring naphthalene dominant. Soot total PAH was much higher (c. 200 μg/g mean to a maximum of 815 μg/g). Soot from PM emissions poses a major primary health concern. Despite PAH trends not being obvious with ICS type (limited sample size) and the wide range in soot total PAH, soot PAH-fingerprints were well constrained with low variation of diagnostic PAH ratios, exhibiting n-ring fingerprints close to the soot median (0.1% 2-ring, 20% 3-ring, 61% 4-ring, 14% 5-ring, 5% 6-ring PAH). These corroborate the expected wood-related combustions sources, but also point to the needs to understand factors that control wide variations in PM and (total) PAH emitted as these control variations in HAP and differing risks posed to individual households. Further household-based research is thus recommended discerning relationships between PM emissions and PAH contents, driving the chemical-composition health risks. These should establish influences on PAH exposure arising from ICS type/model selected, operational modes, building/ventilation conditions, variable fuel sources and non-optimal ICS use. Determination of real-world emission factors of trace metals, EC, OC, BTEX, and semivolatile organic compounds (PAHs, PCBs and PCNs) in a rural tunnel in Bilecik, Turkey

A field study was performed in a rural tunnel to determine pollutant concentrations, sources and on road vehicle emission factors (EFs) of particulate matter, trace metals, elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes (BTEX), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Emission factors (EFs) for polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were also determined. A 12-day extensive sampling campaign during morning and afternoon periods at inlet and exit stations of the tunnel was conducted. Morphology of the particles was also investigated by Scanning Electron Microcopy (SEM). Correlation analysis, factor analysis and diagnostic PAH ratios were utilized to identify emission sources of trace metals. Identified sources include brake wear (33%), resuspension of road dust (15%), tyre wear (12%), exhaust emissions (10%), and lubricants (9%). Based on the PAH diagnostic ratios, major sources of PAHs were estimated as diesel emissions.EFs were comparable with the literature and varied from 31.5 to 295.4 mg vehicle−1 km−1 with an average of 129.2 ± 80 mg vehicle−1 km−1 for PM2.5. PM2.5–10 EFs varied between 15.9 and 236.1 mg vehicle−1 km−1 with an average of 96 ± 30 mg vehicle−1 km−1. Average EC EFs were 40.3 ± 9.8 mg vehicle−1 km−1 for PM2.5 samples and 19.5 ± 0.5 mg vehicle−1 km−1 for PM2.5–10 samples while OC EFs were 33.7 ± 18 and 15.5 ± 8.4 mg vehicle−1 km−1 for fine and coarse particles, respectively. EFs of elements were generally 2 (Al) to 59 (Mg) times higher than those previously reported in the literature. Compared to literature, relatively higher EFs for Σ13PAHs (range: 48.1–168 μg vehicle−1 km−1, average: 84.3 ± 46.4 μg vehicle−1 km−1) were obtained. BTEX emission factors were in the range of 4.2 ± 4.7 mg vehicle−1 km−1 (m + p-xylene) and 16.7 ± 10.5 mg vehicle−1 km−1 (toluene). Average EFs for ΣPCBs and ΣPCNs were 12.06 ± 5.3 μg vehicle−1 km−1 and 88.9 ± 70.4 ng vehicle−1 km−1, respectively.

Profiles of environmental contaminants in hawksbill turtle egg yolks reflect local to distant pollution sources among nesting beaches in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Knowledge of spatial variation in pollutant profiles among sea turtle nesting locations is limited. This poses challenges in identifying processes shaping this variability and sets constraints to the conservation management of sea turtles and their use as biomonitoring tools for environmental pollutants. We aimed to increase understanding of the spatial variation in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), organochlorine pesticide (OCP) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds among nesting beaches. We link the spatial variation to turtle migration patterns and the persistence of these pollutants. Specifically, using gas chromatography, we confirmed maternal transfer of a large number of compounds (n = 68 out of 69) among 104 eggs collected from 21 nests across three nesting beaches within the Yucatán Peninsula, one of the world's most important rookeries for hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). High variation in PAH profiles was observed among beaches, using multivariate correspondence analysis and univariate Peto-Prentice tests, reflecting local acquisition during recent migration movements. Diagnostic PAH ratios reflected petrogenic origins in Celestún, the beach closest to petroleum industries in the Gulf of Mexico. By contrast, pollution profiles of OCPs and PCBs showed high similarity among beaches, reflecting the long-term accumulation of these pollutants at regional scales. Therefore, spatial planning of protected areas and the use of turtle eggs in biomonitoring needs to account for the spatial variation in pollution profiles among nesting beaches.

Impacts of a large boreal wildfire on ground level atmospheric concentrations of PAHs, VOCs and ozone

During May 2016 a very large boreal wildfire burned throughout the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in central Canada, and in close proximity to an extensive air quality monitoring network. This study examines speciated 24-h integrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements collected every sixth day at four and seven sites, respectively, from May to August 2016. The sum of PAHs (ΣPAH) was on average 17 times higher in fire-influenced samples (852 ng m−3, n = 8), relative to non-fire influenced samples (50 ng m−3, n = 64). Diagnostic PAH ratios in fire-influenced samples were indicative of a biomass burning source, whereas ratios in June to August samples showed additional influence from petrogenic and fossil fuel combustion. The average increase in the sum of VOCs (ΣVOC) was minor by comparison: 63 ppbv for fire-influenced samples (n = 16) versus 46 ppbv for non-fire samples (n = 90). The samples collected on August 16th and 22nd had large ΣVOC concentrations at all sites (average of 123 ppbv) that were unrelated to wildfire emissions, and composed primarily of acetaldehyde and methanol suggesting a photochemically aged air mass. Normalized excess enhancement ratios (ERs) were calculated for 20 VOCs and 23 PAHs for three fire influenced samples, and the former were generally consistent with previous observations. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report ER measurements for a number of VOCs and PAHs in fresh North American boreal wildfire plumes. During May the aged wildfire plume intercepted the cities of Edmonton (∼380 km south) or Lethbridge (∼790 km south) on four separate occasions. No enhancement in ground-level ozone (O3) was observed in these aged plumes despite an assumed increase in O3 precursors. In the AOSR, the only daily-averaged VOCs which approached or exceeded the hourly Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives (AAAQOs) were benzene (during the fire) and acetaldehyde (on August 16th and 22nd). Implications for local and regional air quality as well as suggestions for supplemental air monitoring during future boreal fires, are also discussed.

Combustion-Related Organic Species in Temporally Resolved Urban Airborne Particulate Matter.

Accurate characterization of the chemical composition of particulate matter (PM) is essential for improved understanding of source attribution and resultant health impacts. To explore this we conducted ambient monitoring of a suite of 15 combustion-related organic species in temporally resolved PM 2.5 samples during an ongoing animal exposure study in a near source environment in Detroit, MI. All of the 15 species detected were above the method detection limit in 8 hour samples. This study focused on two molecular classes: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Hopanes measured in samples. Of the 12 PAHs studied, benzo[b]fluoranthene (169 pg m-3), benzo[g,h,i]perylene (124 pg m-3), and benzo[e]pyrene (118, pg m-3) exhibited the three highest mean concentrations while 17α(H),21β(H)-Hopane (189 pg m-3) and 17α(H),21β(H)-30-Norhopane (145 pg m-3) had the highest mean concentrations of the 3 Hopanes analyzed in samples. Ratios of individual compound concentrations to total compound concentrations (∑ 15 compounds) showed the greatest daily variation for 17α(H),21β(H)-Hopane (11-28%) and 17α(H),21β(H)-30-Norhopane (8-20%). Diagnostic PAH concentration ratios ([IP]/[IP + BP] (range 0.30 - 0.45), [BaP]/[BaP+BeP] (range 0.26 - 0.44), [BaP]/[BP] (range 0.41 - 0.82), [Bb]/[Bk] (range 2.07 - 2.66), in samples reflected impacts froma mixture of combustion sources consistent with greater prevalence of petroleum combustion source emissions (gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and crude oil) compared to coal or wood combustion emissions impacts at this urban site. Results from this study demonstrate that short duration sampling for organic speciation provides temporally relevant exposure information.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in soils of Mayabeque, Cuba.

Cuba is a country in transition with a considerable potential for economic growth. Soils are recipients and integrators of chemical pollution, a frequent negative side effect of increasing industrial activities. Therefore, we established a soil monitoring network to monitor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soils of Mayabeque, a Cuban province southeast of Havana. Concentrations of the sum of the 16 US EPA PAHs and of the seven IRMM PCBs in soils from 39 locations ranged from 20 to 106μgkg-1 and from 1.1 to 7.6μgkg-1, respectively. While such concentrations can be considered as low overall, they were in several cases correlated with the distance of sampling sites to presumed major emission sources, with some of the concomitantly investigated source diagnostic PAH ratios, and with black carbon content. The presented data adds to the limited information on soil pollution in the Caribbean region and serves as a reference time point before the onset of a possible further industrial development in Cuba. It also forms the basis to set up and adapt national environmental standards.

Levels and Sources of PAHs in Air-borne PM2.5 of Hefei City, China.

This work studied the concentrations and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air-borne particulate matter of Hefei, China. Samples of PM2.5 were collected daily at two sites during May, 2014, and January, 2015. The average daily concentration of PM2.5 was 96.88µg m-3, which is higher than the 2012 China Ambient Air Quality Standard (GB3095-2012 24-h grade II) of 75µg m-3. The concentrations of 16 EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The PM2.5-bound PAH concentrations ranged from 4.92 to 71.00ng m-3 (mean = 21.34ng m-3), and exhibited obvious seasonal (31.38ng m-3 in winter and 14.05ng m-3 in summer) and spatial variability (27.23ng m-3at site ME and 18.20ng m-3 at site MS). Meteorological conditions such as ambient temperature, wind speed and humidity had influences on the concentrations of PAHs. As an index for PAH carcinogenicity, the annual average concentration of benzo(a)pyrene ranged from 0.46 to 2.31ng m-3, with a mean of 1.15ng m-3. This mean was lower than the China Ambient Air Quality Standard (GB3095-2012) of 2.5ng m-3. The diagnostic PAH ratios and principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that combustion of coal and vehicle emissions were the main sources of PAHs in PM2.5.

Background concentrations of PAHs and metals in surface and subsurface soils collected throughout Manhattan, New York

ABSTRACTThis article summarizes the results from a survey of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and metal concentrations measured in surface and subsurface soil samples that were collected from background locations throughout Manhattan, New York, between August 2005 and May 2006. The 95th percentile total 16 US EPA Priority Pollutant PAH concentrations in surface and subsurface soils were 24.8 and 53.1 mg/kg, respectively. Diagnostic PAH source ratios for surface and subsurface soils are presented, which provide plausible bounds for where these ratios would and would not be able to confidently differentiate background soils from soil samples that are impacted by PAH contamination. The 95th percentile concentrations for lead in surface and subsurface soils were 891 and 2,540 mg/kg, respectively, and the 95th percentile concentrations for mercury in surface and subsurface soils were 1.9 and 2.7 mg/kg, respectively. A not-unexpected finding of the study was that most surface soils and all subsurface soils contained a relatively high fraction of anthropogenic carbon, in addition to the presence of historic fill materials such as glass, brick, coal, and slag from more than 400 years of human activity on Manhattan Island. The concentration ranges for PAHs and metals measured in these background soil samples, coupled with the visual observations of historic fill materials in nearly all soil samples, emphasize that soils in Manhattan are altogether different from rural soils and thus warrant a different framework for site management decisions than rural soils.

Carbon species in PM10 particle fraction at different monitoring sites

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the levels of elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) mass concentrations in PM10 particles (particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm) between seasons (winter and summer) and at different monitoring sites (urban background and rural industrial).Daily samples of airborne particles were collected on pre-fired quartz fibre filters. PM10 mass concentrations were determined gravimetrically. Samples were analysed for OC and EC with the thermal/optical transmittance method (TOT) and for PAHs by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a fluorescence detector.Measurements showed seasonal and spatial variations of mass concentrations for carbon species and for all of the measured PAHs (Flu, Pyr, Chry, BaA, BbF, BaP, BkF, BghiP and IP) in PM10 at the urban site and rural monitoring site described here. Diagnostic PAH ratios (Flu/(Flu + Pyr), BaA/(BaA + Cry), IP/(IP + BghiP), BaP/BghiP, IP/BghiP and BaP/(BaP + Chry)) make it possible to assess the sources of pollution, and these showed that diesel vehicles accounted for most pollution at the rural-industrial (RI) site in the summer, whereas coal and wood combustion were the causes of winter pollution. This difference between winter and summer PAH ratios were more expressed at the RI site than at the UB site because at the UB site the predominant heating fuel was gas. The OC/EC ratio yielded the same conclusion. Factor analysis showed that EC and OC originated from traffic at both sites, PAHs with 5 or more benzene rings originated from wood pellets industry or biomass burning, while Pyr and Flu originated from diesel combustion or as a consequence of different atmospheric behaviour – evaporation and participation in oxidation and photo oxidation processes.

Concentrations of PAHs and other gaseous pollutants in the atmosphere of a rural area

ABSTRACTIn this study, concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) bound to PM10 particles were measured in a Croatian rural area. Considering that by now only a limited number of studies have provided data on pollutant concentrations for rural areas, our aim was to do so by determining the PAH levels, their mutagenic effect and relationship with meteorological conditions and other gaseous pollutants (NO, NO2, NH3). In this investigation, samples of PM10 particles were collected on quartz filters for 1 month in the cold period and 1 month in the warm period of the year, 24 h a day. Diagnostic PAH concentration ratios and factor analysis were used as tools to identify and characterize the PAH sources. The PAHs found in the warm period of the year were characteristic for car exhaust emissions while the predominant source of these pollutants in the cold period was wood burning.The measurements showed much higher average concentrations of all PAHs in the cold period, most pronounced for fluoranthene 0.347 ng m−3 and pyrene 0.223 ng m−3. Mass concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene in the cold period ranged from 0.057 to 1.526 ng m−3, while in the warm period they varied from 0.009 to 0.111 ng m−3. Mutagenicity related to BaP (BaPMeq) was significantly higher during the cold period (1.095 ng m−3) than in the warm period (0.101 ng m−3).

Investigating unmetabolized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in adolescents' urine as biomarkers of environmental exposure

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of interest to human biomonitoring studies due to their carcinogenic potential. Traditionally metabolites of these compounds, like 1-hydroxypyrene, are monitored in urine, but recent methods allow the determination of the parent compounds in urine, which give additional information regarding sources and toxicity of PAHs. In order to assess the feasibility of incorporating these methods in a human biomonitoring study, the 16 USEPA parent PAHs were determined in 20 urine samples. These samples were obtained from 10 boys and 10 girls aged 14–16 years, participating in the third Flemish Environment and Health Study (Flanders, Belgium).Of these 16 parent PAHs, nine could be determined in more than 95% of the samples and three (including benzo(a)pyrene) in more than 50%. Several correlations were found between different PAHs, but not between pyrene and its metabolite 1-hydroxypyrene. Diagnostic PAH ratios in urine and air samples pointed towards combustion sources and are in line with the ratios in environmental samples. Benzo(a)pyrene, naphthalene and fluorene have the highest carcinogenic potential in our cohort, when using toxic equivalency factors. Some associations between PAH congeners and determinants of exposure were found, while fluorene and acenaphthylene were positively associated with thyroid hormone levels and benzo(a)pyrene showed a positive correlation with DNA damage by comet assay. These results confirm that parent PAHs in urine are useful as biomarkers of exposure in biomonitoring studies.
