Objectives: This study investigated characteristic US findings of salivary gland tumors and correlated these findings with histological findings.Methods: Forty-seven benign tumors (21 pleomorphic adenomas, 26 Warthin’s tumors, one oncocytoma), twelve malignant tumors (four mucoepidermoid carcinomas, three adenoid cystic carcinomas, two malignant lymphomas and three other tumors) and three inflammatory diseases were included in this study. All tumors were surgically resected and histologically verified. We retrospectively evaluated the B mode findings (shape, margin, echogenicity, internal structure) and color Doppler findings (poor, peripheral, rich).Results: Forty-four of 47 benign tumors and two malignant lymphomas had a well-defined smooth margins and eight of 12 malignant tumors had an ill-defined irregular margin. The corresponding pathological findings showed that benign tumors and malignant lymphoma had fibrous capsules and malignant tumors invasively extended into the surrounding gland. Pleomorphic adenomas showed lobulated shapes (61.9%), heterogeneous echogenicity (66.7%) and calcification (19.0%). Color Doppler findings were poor or peripheral in 70%. However Warthin’s tumors contained multiple irregular, sponge-like anechoic areas (84.6%) and showed rich color signals at the periphery and solid component of the tumor (68.8%). These findings corresponded well with histological findings.Conclusions: US findings were useful for the differential diagnosis of salivary gland tumor.
