Results are presented for the Zeeman effect obtained in a field of 27,000 gauss for 40 lines due to Lu 1. These lines were excited in an electrodeless discharge in lutetium iodide activated by 2450-Mc/s microwave radiation. The assignment of spectroscopic terms to energy levels in Lu 1 is discussed, the Zeeman effect data being used to identify six new terms and to confirm nine others, and a summary is presented of all similar pertinent data. The presence of a relatively large hyperfine structure in some of the Lu lines investigated has been found to cause marked deviations in the resultant Zeeman patterns from that to be expected on the basis of L–S coupling. These deviations are discussed and compared with what may be expected when appreciable A-and B-h.f.s. splitting factors are involved.
