Research on Sustainable Development Path of Ecological Agriculture Industry in Beijing Suburbs—Taking Xibaidian Village, Daxingzhuang Town, Pinggu District as an Example

With the vigorous advancement of rural revitalization policies, industrial prosperity has put forward new requirements for the ecological agriculture industry. Not only requires the provision of higher quality agricultural products, but also promotes the adjustment of the agricultural industry structure. It is necessary to meet the continuous increase in farmers’ income and the people’s demand for a better life. In recent years, Beijing suburban agriculture has achieved good results in green production, rural energy and agricultural leisure construction. However, there are still problems such as being greatly affected by raw materials, low operating economic income, and insufficient technical equipment. In this paper, the three development models of eco agriculture in Xibaidian village are analyzed. Construct a sustainable development path for the ecological agriculture industry in the suburbs of Beijing from the development concept, development mechanism and new industrial formats. Promote diversification to build a rural complex in Beijing, and realize the harmonious unity of ecological protection and farmers’ income increase.

Rethinking asset modification in regional industrial path development: toward a conceptual framework

ABSTRACT Asset modification is a key concept in the regional industrial path development literature. Extant research mainly focuses on the process of redeploying pre-existing assets and creating new assets, while little attention has been paid to asset reconfiguration. This article establishes a holistic conceptual framework that describes regional industrial path development as one in which regional actors (1) draw on their pre-existing assets and/or create new assets to prepare assets needed for the new industry; and (2) reconfigure these assets into a configuration that gives birth to the new industry. Finally, a typology linking this understanding to differentiated path development is proposed.

The persistent conditions of plantation economy and the fraught spaces of encounter in St Bernard Parish, Louisiana

This article examines how social and economic structures of historic plantation development manage to persist over time and to rearticulate over space. In the early 1900s, the historic plantation sugar economy in St Bernard Parish, Louisiana, suddenly collapsed. Despite efforts by local elites to seize this moment to finally launch a diversified industrial development path, the parish nevertheless sank again into a new cycle of plantation domination and dependency. The dominating sugar sector was broken up only to be rapidly replaced by a vast new monopoly—in, of all things, systematized fur production—whose land tenure and labor regime nearly replicated that of the earlier plantation estates. I examine this folding-over-anew of the plantation, from sugar to fur, in two ways that contribute to recent growing literature on persistent plantation geographies. First, I draw upon theories of Caribbean underdevelopment to identify three persistent conditions of plantation economy. Upon the collapse of sugar in St Bernard, the conditions of estate-based land monopoly, racialized extra-economic labor coercion, and external market/primary commodity dependency constrained the possibility of structural transformation and rearticulated in a new commodity regime based in fur. Second, I turn to consider the experience of workers bound up in the new fur economy who were not, in the main, the debt-bound black workers from the old sugar plantations but a racially and spatially marginal group known as isleños. I draw on a unique set wry folk ballads that isleños maintained as part of local oral tradition to examine the voices of trappers themselves as they negotiated the rearticulating structures of the neo-plantation regime. Thinking with McKittrick's concept of plantation “spaces of encounter,” I find these neo-estate workers forged fraught spaces of discursive and material autonomy that at times resisted, and at times reproduced, the ongoing plantation regime.

Research on the Development Path of Sports Tourism Industry from the Perspective of Experience Economy

Sports tourism is an open system, a dynamic system of supply and demand, production and consumption. With consumption upgrades, strong markets, changes in demand, and policy dividends, tourism experience is becoming a core attraction, and the integration of experience economic elements into sports tourism products can help improve the economic, social and cultural benefits of sports tourism products. It is the right time to explore the high-quality development path of the sports tourism industry from the perspective of experience economy through the 30-year arduous journey of sports tourism in China. This article uses the literature method, observation method and other research methods to summarize the research fields and shortcomings of domestic sports tourism, and is loyal to the experience economy theory to propose the development path of sports tourism in my country.

Building an internationally competitive concentrating solar power industry in China: lessons from wind power and photovoltaics

ABSTRACT This article draws lessons from experiences of developing the photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind power sectors in China for the development of Chinese Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) into an internationally competitive industry. We analyze the sectoral development with a framework that expands on the concept of lead markets, identifying factors that determine whether domestic industrial development paths may or may not generate export success. We find that the Chinese CSP sector has good potential for becoming internationally competitive because of a strong Chinese knowledge base, a clear eye for product quality, standard-setting, and a focus on the high-efficiency and large-storage technological routes most likely to see growing demand in future international markets. Chinese solar towers are already cheaper than international competitors and so far, appear reliable. However, continued and stable deployment support for CSP, designed to reward dispatchable solar power generation, enabling continued domestic learning-by-doing and -interacting is likely required to realize this export potential. To date, Chinese CSP policy has done many things right and, if the domestic market is maintained through renewed support, has put the Chinese industry well on the path to international competitiveness.

Overcoming barriers to new regional industrial path development: The role of a centre for research‐based innovation

AbstractHow regional industries can develop in an economically sustainable way is high on the research agenda. While the literature on regional change has focused primarily on historical case studies, it has said less about the barriers that hinder the desired change. This article contributes to a better understanding of barriers in regional innovation systems that hamper new regional industrial path development. Furthermore, the article analyses how a new knowledge organisation, the Centre for Research‐based Innovation Offshore Mechatronics in the Agder region of Norway, can contribute to overcoming these barriers. The Centre, which is a policy instrument funded by the Research Council of Norway, aims to contribute to path extension and potentially path modernisation. However, since its foundation, oil prices have dropped severely, resulting in new conditions for the Centre and its partners. The article concludes by discussing whether and how the Centre has contributed to overcoming the barriers that hinder developments beyond path extension.

Research on Industry Development Path Planning of Resource-Rich Regions in China from the Perspective of “Resources, Assets, Capital”

The development of industries in China’s resource-rich regions is mainly affected by resource reserves, environmental protection, and industrial structural adjustment. The development of resource-oriented industries that can’t support a high-quality regional economy is large but not well developed. This article considers China’s resource product imports and exports, carbon emissions, and industrial structure ratio factors in recent years. It is believed that China’s resource-rich regions have macro-level development bottlenecks, and the general development of a resource-based industries path is proposed based on the perspective of “resources, assets, and capital”. Taking Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as an empirical case, this article analyzes the pattern of regional industrial development by using the input-output method, calculates the degree of inter-industrial correlation, and constructs a regional industrial development system. The results show the following: 1. China’s overall industrial development pattern has undergone major changes; 2. emerging industries and service-oriented industries have risen in development status, and although resource-based industries have a weaker development momentum, they still have an important position; 3. the hierarchical industry development management model is helpful for forming a regional circular economy innovation development pattern. The results also indicate that the integrated management of “resources, assets, and capital” has a positive effect on the development of resource-based industries in resource-rich regions, which affects the overall industrial development pattern of the region and promotes economic development.

Legitimation dynamics in industrial path development: new-to-the-world versus new-to-the-region industries

ABSTRACT While economic geography has contributed deep insights into the knowledge-related determinants of industry emergence, less is known about the legitimacy that people confer to the new industries. Based on a comparative case study in the potable water reuse industry (California, United States) and the video games industry (Hamburg, Germany), this article explores the legitimation dynamics in regional industrial path development. We elaborate on how system-building/reconfiguration and institutional work processes differ between industries that are new-to-the-world versus new-to-the-region. Our framework contributes to specifying the embedded agency that supports legitimation and thus path development in these two distinct industry formation trajectories.

Automotive regions in transition: Preparing for connected and automated vehicles

The advent of ‘connected and automated vehicles’ (C/AV) is posing substantial transformation challenges for traditional automotive regions across the world. This article seeks to examine both conceptually and empirically how automotive regions reconfigure their industrial and support structures to promote new path development in the C/AV field. Drawing on recent conceptual advances at the intersection of evolutionary economic geography and innovation system studies, we develop an analytical framework that casts light on how regional preconditions provide platforms for asset modification that underpin different routes of transformation. We distinguish between a reorientation route and an upgrading route. The framework is applied to a comparative analysis of industrial path development and system reconfiguration towards C/AV in two automotive regions, namely Ontario (Canada) and the Austrian automotive triangle.

Regional innovation strategy for resilience and transformative industrial path development: Evolutionary theoretical perspectives on innovation policy

Many countries in the developed world are currently experiencing low rates of economic growth, which is furthermore regionally and socially unequal. This increasing inequality seems to have deepened during the Corona crisis. When economic policies are discussed in these demanding times, the strategic question remains whether the best strategy is to seek to bounce back to the 'old normal', or to use this critical time as a conjuncture to departure on a development path to a 'new normal' that is more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive. In light of this, the main aim of this paper is to look for new perspectives on theory and policy with important implications for promoting the most radical forms of industrial path development, viz. path diversification based on unrelated knowledge combinations and new path creation, securing the adaptability of an economy to become more resilient.

The Geography of Technology Legitimation: How Multiscalar Institutional Dynamics Matter for Path Creation in Emerging Industries

abstract Research in economic geography has recently been challenged to adopt more institutional and multiscalar perspectives on industrial path development. This article contributes to this debate by integrating insights from (evolutionary) economic geography as well as transition and innovation studies into a conceptual framework of how path creation in emerging industries depends on the availability of both knowledge and legitimacy. Unlike the extant literature, we argue here that not only the former but also the latter may substantially depend on nonlocal sources. Conceptually, we distinguish between multiscalar export, attraction, and absorption of legitimacy. Coupled with conventional knowledge indicators, this approach enables us to reconstruct how not only external knowledge sourcing but also multiscalar institutional dynamics contribute to a region or country’s ability to leverage its potential for path creation in an emerging industry. Methodologically, we develop legitimation indicators from a global media database, which was built around the case of modular water technologies. Cross-comparing the evidence from six key countries (India, Israel, Singapore, South Africa, the UK, the US) with differing path creation constellations for this emerging industry, allows us to hypothesize how multiscalar legitimation influences a country’s prospects for creating a radically new industrial path.
