Tourism Investment Gaps in Poland

Against a rapid and frequently unsustainable development of tourism in Poland, this article aims to recognize the investment attractiveness for tourism in Poland and its spatial diversity in the context of relieving the effects of overtourism. In the first stage, a multi-dimensional indicator model was developed, and then it was used to assess the attractiveness level of cities and rural, urban and urban-rural municipalities in Poland. The results of the study were the basis of the analysis of the attractiveness of cities in relation to their size, location in the tourist region and various forms of tourism. From a theoretical standpoint, the study shows that there is a clear-cut need to redirect tourism investments from the centres to more distinct locations in order to achieve more sustainable development of tourism. Furthermore, it was found, that the main factors that determine the tourism attractiveness of cities are market potential, cultural values, social infrastructure, and in some cases, natural values. The tourist potential of cities and rural areas allows for spatial dispersion of investments and counteracting the concentration of phenomena related to overtourism. The analysis was carried out for 2478 municipalities in Poland. The sums of zero unitarization method was used to assess the level of investment attractiveness.

Innovativeness of railway transport in the context of the development of tourism in Poland

The article discusses the issue of innovation activities of companies in railway transport in Poland in the context of the development of tourism. Transport infrastructure and organization, along with economic, social, ecological and political factors, are the basic stimulators for the development of tourism. In literature on the subject, this problem is rarely discussed. This article is of a review and research nature. The aim of it is to consider the condition of innovativeness of railway transport companies in Poland in the context of its role in the development of tourism in Poland. To attain the goals of this research, a critical analysis of literature on the subject and desk research have been carried out, the latter drawing on the unpublished data of Statistics Poland, referring to Polish companies from section Transportation and storage, class Passenger rail transport, interurban (according to NACE rev.2). The data derive from the three latest editions of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS). In the article, there was used data concerning: innovation activity, types of innovation, co-operation during innovative activity, importance of the source of information for innovation activity, importance of the reasons and barriers to not innovate. The data analysis reveals a rather low level of innovativeness of railway transport companies in Poland. In the authors’ opinion, this state of affairs is connected with historical and political factors: the structure and failed reforms in this sector and granting development priority to other branches of transport during the structural transformation in Poland.

Assessment of applicability of forecasting methods of passenger traffic by air as a key factor in tourism development in Poland

W niniejszej pracy skupiono sie na kluczowym czynniku rozwoju turystyki jakim jest pasazerski transport lotniczy. Rozpatrzono prognoze dla pieciu portow lotniczych, ktore w pierwszym polroczu wykazaly sie najwiekszą liczbą obsluzonych pasazerow, a takze lączny ruch pasazerski w Polsce. Prognoze wykonano dla pierwszych dwoch kwartalow 2018 r. bazując na danych kwartalnych za lata 2011-2018. Zastosowano metode polegającą na wykonaniu obliczen dla zmieniającej sie liczby L ostatnich lat uwzglednionych w modelu. Rozpatrzono model sezonowości addytywnej oraz sezonowości multiplikatywnej. Postawiony problem badawczy wyrazal sie pytaniem, czy najmniejszej wartości odchylenia standardowego reszt odpowiada najmniejsza wartośc bledu MAPE. Stosując metode trendow jednoimiennych okresow wyznaczono: odchylenie standardowe reszt, bląd wzgledny ex ante oraz bląd prognozy MAPE. Szukano odpowiedzi na pytanie: czy wartośc minimalna MAPE jest zgodna z najmniejszą wartością odchylenia standardowego S, czy tez z najmniejszą wartością bledu ex ante. W przypadku trendu liniowego zaproponowano uproszczoną metode „trzech punktow”, natomiast dla trendu parabolicznego zaproponowano metode „czterech punktow”. Stwierdzono, ze metoda trendow jednoimiennych okresow prowadzi do porownywalnych bledow prognozy ex post jak klasyczna metoda analizy sezonowości (w tym metoda Kleina).

Status and Development Trends of Agritourism in Poland and the Ukraine

Purpose. The aim of the article is to present the state and prospects of development of rural tourism in Poland and the Ukraine. Method. The analysis included data taken from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Central Statistical Office, the Institute of Tourism as well as domestic and foreign literature. Findings. In 1993, there were around one thousand agritourism farms in Poland, while in 2012, their number increased to 7.6 thousand which represents 0.5% of the total number of agritourism farms in Poland. Country dwellers are increasingly interested in economic activities within the range of rural tourism and propose offers suiting the diverse needs of tourists. At the same time, tourists are deeply interested in spending their free time in the countryside. Research limitations and conclusions. As research studies of many authors show, tourists value the charms of the countryside, i.e. peace, tranquillity and possibilities to make social relationships. However, they expect high-quality services and infrastructure as well as a rich offer of free time animation. Ukraine has great potential for multifunctional rural development and the development of agritourism. Practical implications. Presentation of the most important directions of development regarding rural tourism in Poland and the Ukraine. Originality. The article presents status and developmental trends of agritourism in Poland and the Ukraine. Type of paper. Research article.

Strategic planning for sustainable tourism development in Poland

ABSTRACTThe aim of this article is to evaluate selected tourism development strategies in Poland, in the context of strategic planning, stakeholders’ participation, and sustainable development principles. A questionnaire evaluation of strategy (44 questions) was established and based on measurement scales developed and validated by other authors in earlier studies. The five authors of the study rated 37 tourism development strategies in 13 provinces, 11 cities, 5 counties, 6 municipalities, and 2 other areas. Analysis revealed that they implement paradigms of sustainable development of tourism to only a small extent. Definitely higher quality is documented for higher levels of administrative division. The highest rated domains of the tourism development strategy in the examined documents are Strategic Planning Indicators and Implementation, Monitoring, and Evaluation.

GOOD PRACTICES IN WINE TOURISM IN SELECTED COUNTRIES AND CONCLUSIONS FOR POLAND

Purpose: Evaluation of activities supporting the development of wine tourism in Poland in the context of best practices used by well-developed wine regions in different countries and issues related to wine tourism indicated by theoreticians. Method: In order to indicate the best practices applied by selected wine regions, we used a method of content and a case study analysis. The evaluation of activities supporting the development of wine tourism in Poland was made on the basis of an analysis of digital documents provided by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, the Polish Tourist Organization, regional tourist organizations, and entities managing Polish wine routes. The assessment of winemakers' activities was based on the analysis of the content of online documents introduced by themselves. Among the 364 winemakers, only 152 had a website. The research sample of electronic documents generated by service providers was therefore 152. Electronic documents were analyzed from a point of view of the main information relevant to the enotourism planning, information about additional services and the availability of information for non-Polish speakers customers. Findings: There is lacking sustain activities supporting wine tourism at the level of the central administration. At the regional level, uneven activities are occurring, with varying intensity, depending on the region. Among the winemakers, the entities those involved in the promotion of their own tourist activities belong to the minority. Only 42% of entities have their own website, of which in 20% of cases the content of the website is inadequate to the enotourism activity, or the site was inactive. Assuming the activities taken on the three above mentioned levels, there is lack of continuity of the wine tourism development strategy among the stakeholders. Research and conclusions limitations: Only electronic documents were used for the analysis of the issued problem. In a further studies it would be justified to conduct observations allowing to assess the quality of provided services in the field of enotourism and focus groups with the participation of the entities from particular groups of stakeholders. Practical implication: The text indicates the best practices for Polish wine tourism. Originality: The Polish wine tourism industry has not been analyzed in terms of good practices. We carried out a comprehensive analysis of the documents content and information regarding enotourism organisation on three levels of stakeholders engaged in the promotion of wine tourism in Poland. Spa and Wellness Tourism in Poland - A New Geographical Analysis

Abstract The aim of the paper is to present the situation of the spa resorts in Poland from the geographical point of view, emphasizing especially the tourist context of their existence. This article firstly deals with the brief history of spas in Poland and the definition of the phenomenon, presented in the Polish literature and legal acts. The main part of the paper presents the geographical analysis of the phenomenon: spatial distribution of the activities allowed by law, localization concerning the different kind of landscapes that accompanies the spas, natural and curative resources and the medical treatments based on their potential. In addition, the tourist context analysed with the support of the statistical data of the accommodation units, tourist sand its preferences, and health tourist establishments in the spa resorts and its usage is also crucial. The perspectives of the spa tourism development in Poland concerning the potential and obstacles are presented.

New opportunities for future tourism after 25 years of political and socioeconomic transformation – foresight in Poland’s tourism planning

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present the changes in political and socioeconomic conditions after 25 years of transformation and how it provided to adopt new methodology in tourism planning. It shows the possibilities offered by the use of the foresight process in planning the development of tourism in Poland. Since one of the main foresight goals is to identify trends, the paper takes attempt to verify trends that occurred in Poland after 1989 and if they have now and will have in the near future influence on Polish tourism. Detailed objective is to characterize the systemic transformation and its impact on the tourism economy.Design/methodology/approachPaper is the review, which used literature, legislation and strategic documents query. It also includes comparative analysis.FindingsThe analysis of the political and economic changes that have taken place in Poland over the last 25 years shows that they were positive for the development of tourism base. The impact of globalization and global trends is now clearly noticeable also in Poland. Political and economic changes allow the use of foresight methodology in studies on the future of tourism while maintaining its main attributes: anticipation, participation, action, networking, vision.Research limitations/implicationsThe analysis included the impact of political changes and social trends on the tourist economy. Proposals that show the positive aspects of these changes relate to tourism and present extensive opportunities to create scenarios, both at the national and regional levels.Practical implicationsThe analysis forms the basis for the activities of tourism entities in Poland. It shows the characteristics for the future of the tourism market particularly the demand side.Social implicationsThe analysis of changes in systemic and social trends enables anticipation of changes in tourism as a social phenomenon.Originality/valueThe paper presents the historical basis for the development of tourism in Poland after political changes in relation to the planning of tourism by using the methodology of foresight. It also presents these phenomena and social trends that have an impact on the development of tourism.

Directions in the development of business tourism in Poland

Business tourism in Poland has been developing since the 1990s, when the political regime changed. It is one of the many areas that has been subject to change after the historic year of 1989. However, it gained greater importance in the 21st century. Special attention was to this type of tourism and the product, as, compared to typical tourism oriented towards sightseeing and leisure, business tourists spend more money on travel, as well as in the destination itself, they are the target market for many business entities, and business travel movement takes place throughout the year, fending off the effects of seasonality.

The importance of non-profit organisations in developing wine tourism in Poland

The main objective of this paper is to diagnose the influence of non-profit organisations in the development of wine tourism in Poland. Analysis is provided of their activities in promoting wine and wine tourism among farmers, people wanting to establish new vineyards, and tourists. Public sources are used as a secondary source for the research, including documents from the Agriculture Market Agency, the Central Statistical Office of Poland and non-profit organisations, as well as primary data. Interviews were used to research. These were conducted with the chairpersons of the following associations of wine growers: the Lesser Polish Gorge of the Vistula Wine Growers Association (Stowarzyszenie Małopolskiego Przełomu Wisły), the Polish Institute of Grapevines and Wine (Polski Instytut Winorośli i Wina), the Lesser Poland Wine Forum Association (Stowarzyszenie Małopolskie Forum Winne), and the Subcarpathian Wine Growers Association (Podkarpackie Stowarzyszenie Winiarzy). Research was conducted between April and June 2012. The results confirmed the importance of non-profit organisations in developing winery and wine tourism in Poland. These organisations motivate people to wine production through coaching, combined operations, and joint meetings. They organise events such as wine festivals and competitions; cooperate with the media; receive money from local governments for activities to enhance the attractiveness of the region and initiate common work to change wine legislation in Poland.

Medical tourism trends in Poland

The global increase in the flow of patients and health professionals as well as medical technology has led to new patterns of consumption and production of medical services in the past decades. Free movement of goods and services contributed to the liberalization of trade in health services. Medical tourism is one of the forms of health tourism, rapidly growing on the global market. In medical tourism, patients travel to neighboring or distant countries in order to receive medical assistance under the global trend of combining treatment with leisure. The development of medical tourism is also observed in Poland. Citizens of Germany, Great Britain and the Scandinavian countries use the services offered in Polish medical institutions most frequently. One of the main problems in the further development of Polish medical tourism is a lack of implementation of the European Directive on the application of patients' rights in cross-border healthcare. This article describes the process of medical tourism development in Poland. The phenomenon of medical tourism, types of health tourism and main drivers of that process are also characterized by the authors.

ROLE OF HUMAN CAPITAL IN TOURISM SECTOR – LITARATURE OVERVIEW

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of human capital in the tourism sector in Poland and an analysis of the importance of human capital in the tourism sector in the world, based on available literature data. In the tourism sector workers have to face the problem of human resource management in the Polish tourist industry and the tourism and hospitality education in Poland, which seem to be insufficient. The paper presents a conceptual framework that shows the relationship between human capital management and development of tourism. Production of high-quality human capital, will positively affect the development of tourism in Poland.

Poland, after a short recession resulting from the global crisis, again recorded growth in foreign tourist arrivals. This allows the conclusion that tourism will become in the coming years, one of the main directions of development Polish. In the wake of the development of tourism in Poland should take into account the need to increase the accommodation in hotels. This is necessary in order to fully exploit the potential of the country in this field. The hotels industry is so pro-development trend of tourism in Poland has a chance to growth. Beyond the basic offer, hotels need for additional distinguishing features compared to its nearest competitors such distinction through the use of certified sustainable solutions "Clean Tourism". The aim of this paper is to analyze the basic premises deployment decisions assumptions at the example of ecology certification "Clean Tourism" and an incentive to certify the hotel facilities.

Development of tourism in Poland: policy implications

This research note aims to discuss policy implications for the development of tourism in Poland. It takes as its premise that the country has considerable tourist potential, which has not been fully tapped. Hence, with emphasis placed on Poland's destination attractiveness, we identify weaknesses that hold back the growth of the tourism industry. It is argued that the development of various forms of tourism might foster the diversification of economic activity and encourage the creation of jobs, in particular in poorer rural or remote communities. For this to happen, however, a re-orientation of economic and environmental policies is called for.
