Upcycling Classics—Sustainable Design Development through Fabric Manipulation Techniques in Fashion Design Education

AbstractAs the sustainable fashion movement gains momentum, there is a growing need to introduce such concepts to the next generation of fashion designer. One approach to produce sustainable designs is upcycling, defined as the salvage and reuse of discarded or found items into new products. This study examines a pedagogical approach for engaging 2nd year undergraduate textile and fashion design students in sustainable fashion design practice. Working in groups, students are challenged to upcycle old clothing into a little black dress, using a keyword as direction for concept, design development, and garment construction techniques. To elevate value in post‐consumer textile waste, it is necessary to develop high‐quality contemporary design outcomes. This teaching approach aims to encourage the revaluation of recyclable resources, the exploration of the creative potential of fabric manipulation techniques, experimental design development, and professional production techniques. This is achieved through the implementation of a design brief that establishes original approaches to upcycling, contrary to the arbitrary processes that are typically used.

Research on the Development and Development of Sustainable Design in the Textile and Garment Industry under the Goal of "Double-Carbon"

Textile and garment industry is an important part of China's social economy. In the development process of this industry, sustainable garment design has attracted more and more attention, mainly because it can reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, and then promote the long-term development of the textile and garment industry. In the past, there were big problems in the textile and clothing design work. Due to the limited design concept, a lot of waste fabrics and harmful gases were produced in the links of clothing design and production, which deviates from the current green development concept. Under the goal of "double carbon", the textile and garment industry needs to establish the development concept of environmental protection and emission reduction, and to optimize and improve the previous design concept and methods, so that it can achieve the goal of sustainable development.

A Systematic Review on the Implementation of Agility in Sustainable Design Development

The importance of sustainable design for achieving sustainable development goals (SDG) has become increasingly prevalent. Agility for sustainable design development is a project management approach that aims to provide a flexible and efficient way of developing new products. However, the application of agility for sustainable design development is not well-defined, with unknown processes and benefits. To address this, this study aims to explore the benefits of theoretical research and the application of agility in sustainable design. The study critically examines the application of agility in sustainable design development through a literature review. The results identify eight integration directions of agility that contribute to sustainable design, providing a better understanding of agility and enabling its implementation in the development of new products. This study seeks to create a more coherent and rigorous system of theory and practice for sustainable design.

Study on The Influence of Colonial Architecture of Vernacular Environment

A traditional house is a symbol that represents a certain environmental area with their culture. However, there is a number of urban configuration in DI Yogyakarta that reflects the influence of Dutch colonization (1816-1941). This is characterized by a collection of contrasts and overlays of different forms of architecture and urbanism. This legacy of colonial architecture and urban planning has ignited different perspectives on the sustainable development of rural areas and the diversification of the rural economy. The purpose of this study was to examine and identify the Limasan house of DI Yogyakarta with a pyramid-shaped roof as its hallmark. Therefore, using a qualitative research method, that of grounded theory, the different influences of colonial architecture for sustainable design development in line with research objectives were investigated. The results showed the identification of factors that influence the well-being of buildings’ residents and the interaction of the external and internal environment of buildings. This current study contributes to shedding light on the meaning and representation of Yogyakarta’s Limasan house design with a scientific approach.

Exploring the Impact of Kinetic Façade Environmental Control Systems in the Development of Sustainable Design: A Systematic Literature Review

In this study, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted primarily aimed to assess the existing literature pertaining to the utilisation of kinetic façade environmental control systems (ECS) in developing building designs that are highly sustainable. For this purpose, the search strategy was initiated by using various databases including Google Scholar, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, SCOPUS and Springer, etc. The inclusion criteria for the studies were based upon the investigation of the use of kinetic façade ECS in sustainable design. Moreover, the timeframe for the inclusion of the papers was kept between 2012 and 2021. Using these inclusion criteria, the search was conducted and a sample of 13 papers was selected from different databases. The data were extracted from these papers and were subjected to analysis. The findings of the SLR explicitly showed that different façade systems are highly energy efficient because of the innovative techniques used in their construction. In the building design process, the development of kinetic facades is given due attention for the purpose of maintaining comfortable internal conditions as compared to the outside environment. As technology and smart systems improve, the involvement of façades in developing energy-efficient and more comfortable design methodologies will gain more attention. Moreover, the findings of SLR depicted that the kinetic facades are quite important in terms of attaining desired daylighting within the buildings. Also, SLR found that studies particularly focus on the use and integration of technology when designing kinetic facades which should consider the ecological context into consideration during the development of such building architectures.

Advancing Taiwan's traditional craft products: A modular product design model of manufacturing technologies

The compatibility between craftsmanship and industrial product design is an important axis of modern design development. This research seeks to integrate the craft process and industrial product design methodology to achieve mass production while maintaining characteristics of traditional craftsmanship. This study constructs an operational model to formulate appropriate strategies, present two craft cases, and utilize the triangulation method to explore synergistic effects between craft process and industrial product design. The conclusions reveal that craft materials, modules, innovation, and living technology are four key design features of the modern craft model. Moreover, this study proposes a new craft development model which applies the module concept to determine feasible market strategies that can be implemented to bridge the gap between craft and product design processes. Importantly, this study also draws upon theories and models proposed by previous researchers to explain how modern craftsmanship can be leveraged to establish market niches for mass-produced products. The concept of modern crafts facilitates cross-domain collaboration and integration, contributes to the field of traditional crafts and product design, and creates niche markets for traditional craft products. This novel approach can therefore be leveraged to advance the development of sustainable design, innovative material use, product recycling, innovative design concepts, and human-friendly design.

Sustainable development in the design of online degree programmes for national cross-studies

This study examines the integration of sustainable development in the holistic design of higher education online degree programmes for national cross-studies in Finland. The methodology adopted is design-based research. The literature combines works from the fields of online degree programme design and sustainable development. The empirical data is collected from an Online Degree Working Group representing various online degree expertise in applied higher education. The results of this study highlight the importance of national level collaboration in efforts to reach sustainable development goals in online degree programmes for national cross-studies in higher education. Key sustainability competencies are combined into online degree programme design to reveal new considerations for sustainable development in the online degree education context. The results can be utilised by managers, administrators, and educators of online degree programmes in higher education organisations who are interested in implementing sustainable development in the design phase of the online degree programmes.

Analysis on the Correspondence between Sustainable Social Service Design and Humanistic Aesthetic Design and Cognitive Psychological Utility.

In this era of gradual scarcity of resources, sustainable development has become an important issue for society. In this environment, the cultural, economic, and social environment has a decisive influence on sustainable development. This paper mainly starts with service design and humanistic aesthetics and introduces the sustainable design development theory into the design so that the design can better respond to the sustainable development strategy. We established the integration method of marketing and design, through the combination of humanistic art design and the cognitive psychological effect and the cognitive psychological effect of customers, advocating appropriate design and humanism in the information age, which not only improves the sustainable society but also enriches the service design system theory.

Proposed Urban Design of the Area Surrounding the Great Samarra Mosque

This research attempts to put a proposal Sustainable Design Development of the area around the Great Mosque & its Minaret, which it for many years has become a symbol of Iraqi architecture and its history as a result of the skill of Iraqi sculptors and architects in using local materials like bricks in their buildings. The research problem is a knowledge gap about the(SWOT) factors (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) that faced area.. While Research methodology is descriptive and analytical. The Reasons for selecting this project is to raise the percentage of tourism in the area. Subsequently, to grow a good economic city; in addition to the importance of Samarra civilization in making it a destination for tourism for tours, students, poets, and others because it includes many cultural landmarks and needs a space to attract tourists and be a cultural outlet for the city as well as a recreational site embraces their activities and meet their needs. To the archaeological importance of the area near Al-Malwaiya, to attract tourists in the city, and it helps to identify the city heritage.

Innovative And Sustainable Design Development for Denim Fabric Using Laser Techniques, Tie and Dye and Manual Whiskering

Environment friendly method of processing denim garments is utmost important for value addition in the denim apparel business. Diverse methods exist today to carry out denim finishing such as bleaching, stone washing, sand blasting, snow washing, enzyme washing etc., These effects are found to be non-ecofriendly due to high energy and water consumption, more time consuming, health hazardous for both the employees and the consumers and also leads to high rejection rate. This research deals with ecofriendly and sustainable methods of denim finishing such as laser finishing and also encompasses few other innovative design development techniques for denim. Using various laser techniques like laser cut, laser whiskering, torn effect and laser fading, innovative designs (abstract, ethnic, geometric, calligraphy) were developed. Ethnic designs are incorporated by manual whiskering technique using blocks. Tie & Dyed warp yarns and undyed weft yarns were used for the development of tie and dyed denim garments. The treated denim was washed with detergent and then analyzed for weight of the sample, EPI (Ends per Inch), PPI (Picks per Inch), tensile strength, abrasion resistance, pilling resistance, tearing strength, stiffness, crease recovery, wash fastness, colour value and shrinkage. The treated fabrics exhibit a significant difference in the properties compared to the untreated samples. The intensity of laser treatment has a significant effect on the physical properties especially on the strength of the denim materials. Denim garment with innovative designs are expected to gain popularity among the customers.

NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS IN AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL AISI 303 MICROALLOYED WITH ZIRCONIUM AND TELLURIUM

The control of formation of nonmetallic inclusion and the characterization present the basis of improvement of steel product properties and lead to sustainable development in design of new steel grades. In order to produce steels with better machinability, such as AISI 303 grades, a modification of inclusions with carefully designed chemical composition is presented. Sulphur by creating sulphide inclusions reduces friction and cutting resistance, and increases the brittleness of the chip.Considering its harmful effect in steel, as well as the fact that non-metallic inclusions have been insufficiently tested for this type of high-alloyed steel, the aim of this research is to determine effects of microalloying on the possibility of modification of non-metallic inclusions. Modification with zirconium favorably affects the ductile properties of steel, and a step forward in this study is a modification of inclusions with tellurium.It is of particular importance to determine the behavior of non-metallic inclusions in the process of production of the structural part and in subsequent exploitation. Therefore, plastic processing of austenitic stainless steel was also carried out, forging and rolling with two different level of processing.

Self-Organising Floor Plans in Care Homes

This paper presents and discusses an optimisation approach applied to spatial layouts in care home building design. With this study, we introduce a method for increasing the floor plan efficiency using a self-organising genetic algorithm, thus reducing energy consumption, improving the wellbeing of residents and having an implicit impact on the costs of energy and health care. In order to find an optimal spatial configuration, we elaborated and tested a number of design criteria based on existing literature reviews and interpreted through initial considerations of care home layouts. These are used as objectives in a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to evaluate the best design solution. The self-organised floor plan is then used to run a final simulation to observe how residents could use the optimised spaces and to measure the improved efficiency of the new plans. The paper concludes with the discussion of the results and some considerations for future studies and experiments using emergence behaviour models to improve sustainable development in design.

Clark’s Crow: A design plugin to support emergy analysis decision making towards sustainable urban ecologies

Architects working with city planners and developers in the shaping of urban environments typically consider multiple factors in isolation, from urban design and socio-economic relationships to data analyses. Analyses regarding urban life cycle scenarios are exemplar of this trend, with considerations made in isolation at the later stages of the design-development process when the scope for decisions which could ultimately affect the sustainability of an urban environment is much more limited. This paper defines our effort to introduce a new tool, named “Clark’s Crow”, which aims to address this shortcoming by promoting awareness of the impact of different design options through a biophysically based ecological accounting method in the early stages of urban design-development. The tool is used within existing architectural design environments with an aim to offer a socio-ecological analysis during the design decision-making process. Clark’s Crow is underpinned by the emergy analysis method, which aims to consider both the energy, material, and information flows of a system, such as an urban ecology, and to understand both the work of the techno-sphere in constructing our urban environments and that of the geo-biosphere in sustaining such development. Clark’s Crow facilitates emergy analysis in the early stages of urban design, thereby allowing queries regarding material and energy flows to be addressed in conjunction with design choices at this initial stage. In this paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness and features of Clark’s Crow through a case study of development using next generation systems in Manhattan, New York, depicting how an emergy analysis approach can lead to an understanding of the value and impact of speculative buildings towards sustainable design-development.

The process of holism: a critical analysis to bridge the gap between sustainable architecture design principles and elements defining Art of Sustainability

ABSTRACTIn 2004, Jason F. McLennan, in his book, The Philosophy of Sustainable Design, stated that ‘Sustainable design is the philosophy that simply asks, what is the most we can do on a given project to enhance the quality of the built environment’ or ‘it is a design philosophy that seeks to maximize the quality of the built environment, while minimizing or eliminating negative impact to the natural environment’. Such philosophy is a simple translation to ‘Sustainable Design’ in terms of ‘Sustainable Development’. In 2013, in SudBE international conference held in China, our research team coined the term ‘Art of Sustainability’ as the key element for sustainable design development. It links the concept of sustainable development to sustainable design principles. The aim of this research work is to establish a new model that links the six major sustainable design principles (The respect for: 1 – The wisdom of natural systems, 2 – The human vitality principle, 3 – The ecosystem principle, 4 – Cycle of life 5 – Energy and natural resources, and 6 – And finally the process – Holistic thinking principle) to the elements defining the Art of Sustainability which are: (1 – The meaning of space, 2 – The innovative structures, 3 – The innovation in construction and building material, and 4 – The contextual and cultural values). Such model can define the state of paradigm shift in sustainable design in architecture, where sustainable design seeks better building performance in terms of sustainability while Art of Sustainable design model would seek a better sustainable design performance, which is a step forward towards more sustainable practice.

'지속 가능한 미'의 분석틀 수립과 수변도시비전공모에 나타난 설계요소 도출에 관한 연구

As environmental problems became global in scale in the late 20th century, sustainability has emerged as a critical issue in many different disciplines and fields. Especially it has become one of the most crucial concepts in the architecture industry which has a great impact on society, economy and culture. Only a few studies have addressed the problem that the aesthetic consideration seems to have been excluded in sustainable design development with only economic and environment aspects stressed on. In this paper, 'sustaining beauty' will be looked at as a practical alternative to embody sustainability. The purpose of this research is three-fold. First, based on the principles of 'Sustaining beauty', analytic framework for 'Sustaining beauty' is proposed. Secondly, our government's aesthetic attitude toward sustainable design development and prize-winning entries of River front city vision competition were examined through the framework. Finally, constructive design elements are drawn from the competition that would make a sustainable experience for users.

Public Facilities Design in Sustainable Ways for Reconstruction Work of Yushu Area

The region of Yushu has fragile natural environment. In 2010, it suffered severe damages caused by earthquakes. This paper subject, on the basis of status research of natural and cultural environment in Yushu area and urban public facilities across the world, is aiming at a design attempt of public facilities suitable for Yushu area under the guidance of sustainable-development design theory. After constructing computer models, we made physical models to further test the reliability of our scheme. The overall design acts according to circumstances, and makes it environmental friendly, developmental sustainable, economical, aesthetic, practical and reliable. We also added to our design some local characteristics to make it better integrate into the local natural environmental features so that it could be widely used. In the end, we summarized the pros and cons of the scheme through theoretical analysis of our design process, despite that, in June 2014, we had an on-the-spot investigation in Yushu, and according to its current state of development, we made outlooks of our further scheme practice.

The Study of Creative Green Fabric Design in Apparel

As with the development of the society, people are becoming more aware of the phrases like “low carbon”, “green” and “sustainable development in design and manufacturing”. Based on the notion of green, this article stresses that environmentally friendly materials should be applied to apparel design process. It illustrates the strategy of how to make apparel design more ecological, concerned with its method and materials. There are 2 basic ways: a scientific way and an artistic way. The article reflects on the low carbon appliance in the clothing industry, and shows specific ways of creating new materials and taking advantage of old fabrics, as sustainable development calls for new technologies to save energy, green materials applied to apparel design is an absolute trend for future society.

A study on the sustainable design based on biomimetic principle

A sustainable development has been recently attracted considerable attention. Industrial products taking into account all effects of a product during its entire life cycle from production to disposal and environmentally friendly architectures, produced by a sustainable design inspired by nature have been already placed as a worldwide trend. Biomimicry, the combination of the Greek roots ‘bios’ life and ‘mimesis’ imitation, literally means the imitation of life and a new applied science that takes out inspiration for solutions to human problems through the research of natural designs, systems and processes. Janine Benyus, a science writer and lecturer on the environment, classified the fields of biomimicry into 3 categories. 1) nature as model, 2) nature as measure and 3) nature as mentor. This study represents some successful cases of a sustainable design development based on biomimetic principles extracted from visual image of individual, efficient pattern in the randomness of nature and specific functional structure of individual organism. Some of environmentally friendly architecture inspired by nature are also offered. So far, over 2,000 cases of sustainable development have been reported and are substantially sustainable and have proven to be optimized in terms of efficiency, because over many millennia the organisms that inhabit this planet have gone through countless environmental filters that have shaped and continue to inform the shape of organisms today. A sustainable design based on biomimetic principles is thought to be a new driving power for the eternity of human being. To make this possible, a broad range of fields including material research, product design & innovation, inventions, systems design, architecture, communication and mechanics would be interdisplinarily combined.
