Hot spots, evolutionary trends, and future prospects for the sustainable development of the marine economy in the past 30 years: a comparative bibliometric analysis based on CiteSpace

How to assess the quality of sustainable development is an important issue for the marine economy. This study examined studies on sustainable development of marine economy over the past 30 years using core databases from China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Web of Science. This study introduced bibliometric analysis methods and CiteSpace software to track and comparatively analyze the hotspots of studies from 1994 to 2023. This study showed that (1) the research on sustainable development of the marine economy has achieved extensive results. Researchers have already collaborated with those in China. (2) Hotspots for Chinese research are mainly focused on building an indicator system of marine economy's sustainable development, realizing the path of sustainable development of regional marine economy, and planning the sustainable development goals of specific marine industries. In contrast, other countries focus on protecting marine ecology and identifying the path of sustainable development of the marine industry. (3) Strengthening exchange and cooperation between institutions and scholars from various countries, and further studies on the micro-paths of blue carbon sinks, marine ecological civilization and high-quality development, low-carbon development of marine industries will become new hotspots for research.

Impact of marine industrial agglomeration on the high-quality development of the marine economy——A case study of China's coastal areas

Although the high-quality development of the marine economy has become a new paradigm to explore sustainable development in China, the path to its realization remains unclear. One path being explored in China is industrial agglomeration, but whether industry clustering leads to high-quality development of the marine economy has not been fully explored. Thus, the impact of industrial agglomeration on the marine economy deserves further investigation. This study first establishes a five-dimensional index system (innovation, coordination, greenness, openness, and inclusivity) to gauge the quality of marine economic development and then applies a hybrid method to evaluate each dimension. Furthermore, from an industry perspective, this study explores the influence mechanism of marine industry agglomeration on the high-quality development of China’s marine economy from several dimensions. The results show that (1) different regions have significantly different development levels, and the growth rates vary across each dimension. (2) From a broad standpoint, marine industry clustering has greatly promoted high-quality economic development in four sectors: innovation, coordination, openness, and inclusivity. However, its impact on green development has a time lag. (3) From the perspective of geographical heterogeneity, the impact of industry clustering is insignificant in the Bohai Rim region, positive in the South China Sea region, and negative in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. Our study can enrich the research in this field and provide reference for the development of marine industry and marine economy in coastal areas.

Temporal study of coral reef health in Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park

Coral reefs are one of ecosystems that have high biodiversity and productivity. The condition of coral reefs in Seribu Islands is currently being threatened by various marine industry development activities. This study aims to determine coral reef health in Seribu Islands, DKI Jakarta. The study was conducted at eight observation stations in Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park area on 7-10 March 2022 (First Monitoring) and 31 May until 3 June 2022 (Second Monitoring). Coral reef data collecting were using Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method. Reef fish data collecting were using Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. While for macrobenthos data collecting were using the Belt Transect method. The coral reef health index was determined based on two main components, there are benthic component and reef fish component. Overall, coral reef health from eight observation stations during two monitoring sessions had high recovery potential, although some stations had low coral cover and low target fish biomass. In addition, several species of macrobenthos are bioindicators that can contribute to purifying waters.

Revealing the Current Situation and Strategies of Marine Ranching Development in China Based on Knowledge Graphs

In recent years, marine ranching, as an emerging model of marine industry development, has become a research hotspot in the marine industries of many countries. A marine ranching is an ecological aquaculture fishing ground formed within a specific sea area to increase and restore fishery resources, combined with artificial nurseries and the construction of fish reefs. As a major maritime country, China attaches great importance to the construction of marine ranching and supports them as an important means of conserving aquatic resources, providing fishermen with jobs, and building a marine ecological civilization. Bibliometric methods are considered to be useful tools that can provide a macroscopic overview of large amounts of academic literature, identify research priorities, and track the evolution of science and technology. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis was carried out using three methods: bibliometric analysis, visual analysis with CiteSpace software, and Excel pivoting, presented in the form of visual graphs and data charts. A total of 293 and 522 academic journal papers searched in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and the Web of Science (WoS) core databases were used, respectively, and to summarize the current status of construction of national marine ranching demonstration areas in China, this study also provides an overview of China’s policies on the development of marine ranching over the past two decades. It clarifies the current status, research hotspots and future directions of marine ranching research, and provides a reference for the evolution process and theoretical research of marine ranching in the future. At present, China is focusing on the development of modernized “all-area” marine ranching which is “ecological, precise, intelligent and integrated”. Obviously, it cannot be overemphasized that smart marine ranching will become a research hotspot in the future.

Research on the dynamic co-evolution of the complex system of economy-innovation-environment of the marine industry in China

IntroductionIn the context of accelerating the construction of a marine power, relying on scientific and technological innovation to drive the high-quality growth of the marine economy and paying attention to the protection of the marine ecological environment are the strategic requirements for promoting the sustainable development of the marine industry in China.MethodsThis paper describes the development of marine industry as a complex system of marine economy-innovation-environment, that is, it describes the marine economy, marine innovation and marine environment as a complex system that interacts and restricts each other. Based on the theory of synergetics, a dynamic co-evolution model of the complex system of marine economy-innovation-environment is constructed, and the accelerating genetic algorithm is used to solve the model, so that the contribution degree of each subsystem and interaction effect between them are calculated. This paper uses this model to conduct an empirical study on the current situation of co-evolution of the complex system of marine economy-innovation-environment from 2003 to 2019 in China.ResultsThe research results show that: (1) The order degree of the systems of economy, innovation and environment of the marine industry in China is on the rise; (2) At present, the systems of innovation and environment of the marine industry in China are in an evolutionary state, while the system of economy is showing a “recession” trend; (3) There are competition and cooperation between the system of economy-innovation-environment of the marine industry in China at the same time. The system of economy-environment is in a lose-lose state. The system of economy and innovation and the system of innovation and environment are in a win-lose complementary relationship.DiscussionThis result is conducive to the current transformation and development of China's marine industry, adjusting the direction of marine science and technology inputs, optimizing the structure of marine science and technology outputs, enhancing the coordinated development level of regional and even national marine systems, and providing policy reference for promoting multi-objective collaborative governance in marine management department and accelerating the process of high-quality marine development.

N-PMI modified PAZ nanocomposite coatings with self-healing function for anticorrosion and antifouling applications

With the rapid development of the modern industrial marine economy, metal corrosion and biological fouling of marine ships and engineering equipment have become the main problems affecting the development of the marine industry. Traditional single-function coatings have only anti-corrosion or anti-fouling properties, which cannot meet the current needs of marine industry development for coating protection. In this study, a self-healing coating with good anticorrosion and antifouling properties has been prepared upon functionalization of a film forming resin and modification of a nanofiller. Initially, a modified acrylic resin (PAZ/N-PMI) was successfully synthesized by inserting zinc ions and a structural functional monomer (N-phenyl maleimide; N-PMI) into the polymer chain of an acrylic resin using free radical solution polymerization. A fluorinated silica coated hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite (F-MWCNTs-OH@SiO2) was dispersed in PAZ/N-PMI resin to prepare the composite coating samples. The composite coating showed good performance, in which the antibacterial rate of the composite coating against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was >99.98 %. When F-MWCNTs-OH@SiO2 was 3 wt%, the Zf=0.01Hz of the composite coating reached the highest value, which was 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the PAZ/N-PMI coating. At the same time, the prepared composite coating also exhibited good self-healing properties. This study provides a broad application prospect for the development of high quality marine anti-corrosion and anti-fouling organic coatings.

Marine and coastal places: Wellbeing in a blue economy

Community members have interests in the development of marine industries such as characterise the blue economy agenda. One of these interests is levels of personal and community wellbeing. Governments, local authorities and marine industries are frequently confronted with conflicting values and interests when making decisions about marine industry development. Yet it is not clear how decisions can be made in ways that also focus on community members’ wellbeing. Assessing wellbeing is substantively different from other aspects of development assessment as it comprises (i) subjective and (ii) relational aspects as well as (iii) material aspects. We applied this three-fold wellbeing lens to investigate the connections people make between marine places and their personal wellbeing and how people perceive changes to marine places (industry development) affects this connection. We discuss three key findings: (i) people’s subjective and relational experiences of personal wellbeing in relation to marine places were more important than experiences of material aspects; (ii) the specific quality of the marine environments and the values associated with the physical environment strongly influenced people’s subjective and relational wellbeing experiences; and (iii) the development of marine industries may negatively influence people’s experience of wellbeing in marine places if not done in ways that are sympathetic to their connections with these marine places. We discuss these findings with respect to the marine industry development and suggest that conceptualising and assessing wellbeing using only material concepts and measures in expanding marine industries will risk missing critical information in the development of sustainable local blue economies.

Spatio-Temporal Heterogeneity and Cumulative Ecological Impacts of Coastal Reclamation in Coastal Waters

The coastal reclamation, as one of the most extreme transformations of the ocean space by humans, still lacks scientific quantitative evaluating methods to a large extent, compared with the evolution of land use patterns. A cumulative ecological impacts of reclamation (RCEI) was established in our study based on ecological influence characteristics of different reclamation types, and the attenuation effect of reclamation on adjacent areas. It was characterized by spatio-temporal features in decades. Here, we estimated that the cumulative reclamation area in the Bohai Sea from 1985 to 2018 was 5839.5 km2. Under the influence of human activity, proportions of the industrial and urban boundary, marine construction boundaries (e.g., ports, wharves, and bridges), and protective dams were increased significantly, which led to a sharp increase of the RCEI. In addition, spatio-temporal changes of reclamation were affected by the combination of population growth, economic development, urbanization, industrialization, and marine industry development in coastal cities. These results provided an important historical reference for tracking future development of the Bohai Sea by humans and provided basic data support for the development and protection of the ocean.

Spatio-temporal changes and driving forces of reclamation based on remote sensing: A case study of the Guangxi Beibu Gulf

Since 2000, coastal reclamation projects have been implemented in the Guangxi Beibu Gulf to alleviate the shortage of coastal land resources. As a result, the reclamation area has increased significantly. In this study, based on the Landsat program, we tracked coastal reclamation in the coastal waters of Guangxi in the 21st century. An indicator system was proposed to assess the driving forces of reclamation synthetically. Our results showed that 98.6 km2 of coastal waters of the Guangxi Beibu Gulf was reclaimed from 1997 to 2017, in which three regions underwent great changes: Fangcheng Bay, Tieshan Bay, and Qiznhou Bay. Furthermore, spatio-temporal changes of reclamation were affected by the combination of population growth, economic development, and marine industry development in coastal cities. These results provide an important historical reference for tracking the human development processes of the Guangxi Beibu Gulf, and also offer some suggestions for the rational allocation of reclamation resources.

Evaluation and regional differences analysis of the marine industry development level: The Case of China

The evaluation and regional differences analysis of marine industry development level play a significant role in the marine industry development of coastal regions. Taking China as an example, this study constructs a comprehensive evaluation system with three dimensions of innovation, industrial structure, and outcomes according to the connotation of marine industry development. The entropy-based TOPSIS method is applied to calculate the marine industry development level in 11 coastal provinces of China from 2007 to 2019, and the Dagum Gini coefficient is used to analyze regional differences. It is found that: (1) The weight ranking of the evaluation system is innovation, outcomes, and industrial structure in order, indicating that innovation can best reflect the marine industry development level. (2) The Chinese marine industry development level shows a positive trend, and the progress is especially evident after the strategy of building a strong maritime country is proposed. (3) The intra-regional and inter-regional differences are narrowing, indicating that the coordination of regional development is enhanced. (4) The primary source of regional differences is the intensity of transvariation, so the government should pay attention to the coordinated development of marine industry among provinces, especially the backward provinces in the economic circle with high development level. The findings of this paper provide a useful reference for promoting China’s marine industry development.

Smart healable and reportable anticorrosion coating based on halloysite nanotubes carrying 8-hydroxyquinoline on steel

Integrating healable and reportable ability to sustain new-generation smart anticorrosion coatings with long-term durability is highly desirable to accommodate the development of marine industries. Herein, a new type of dual-function coating is designed to fulfill the needs. Through introducing the smart nanocontainers based on the core of HNTs loaded with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) and the shell made from sodium tripolyphosphate-chitosan (CS) into conventional epoxy matrix, the smart healable and reportable anticorrosion coating on carbon steel (Q235) was developed. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray measurement indicated the corrosion inhibition effect of the nanocontainers and healable performance of composite coatings. Benefitting from the 8HQ, the designed waterborne epoxy coating displayed higher low-frequency modulus after 60 days of immersion, confirming the long-term protection ability. Besides, the composite coating exhibited obvious dark-green color at damaged region to timely sense and report the local corrosion in 30 min of immersion tests. This smart coating with sensitive corrosion visualization and well-performed healable properties holds great potential in actual anticorrosion fields.

The Impact of Resource Optimization on the Economic Development of the Marine Industry

The traditional impact analysis method for the economic development of marine industries does not consider the impact weight of different marine industries, which leads to an unsatisfactory effect on sustainable development after the optimized management of resources. Therefore, a new method is designed to solve the above problems; by analyzing the scale, hierarchical system, and optimizing the spatial resource framework of the marine industry, the influence of different marine industries is comprehensively measured, and the final demand dependency of the marine industry economy is obtained. The comprehensive index system is designed to evaluate the economic development of the marine industry, and the linear weighted sum method is used to calculate the sustainable development degree of marine industry economy in different regions. The results show that the final evaluation score of the marine biological industry in Shandong Province is 64.97, which is affected by comprehensive factors. The scores of capital and environmental governance are between 84.03 and 82.87, respectively, which are the main factors to achieve sustainable development. After the optimization of this method, the demand dependence of relevant regions is reduced, and the sustainable development level is effectively improved, indicating that the sustainable state of this method is better. The resource optimization path given by the research can be further applied to the construction process of marine and industrial economic development in other provinces and cities so as to comprehensively improve the quality and effect of marine economic growth.

Empirical Analysis on the Correlation between Low-Carbon Economy and Marine Industry Development

In order to analyze the correlation between the low-carbon economy and marine industry development, an empirical analysis method of the correlation between the low-carbon economy and marine industry development is proposed. The decomposition analysis method of marine industry carbon emission structure based on the input-output table is adopted to analyze China’s marine industry carbon emission structure and obtain the influencing factors of marine industry carbon emission. The calculation method of total factor productivity of marine low-carbon economy is used to calculate the productivity of all influencing factors of a marine low-carbon economy and analyze the technical effect after the integrated development of low-carbon economy and marine industry. The panel data model is used to analyze the relationship between the transformation and upgrading of the marine industry and the development of the low-carbon economy. The empirical analysis results show that the sustainable development of marine low-carbon economy can only be realized by improving low-carbon technology, and the advanced degree of the marine industrial structure plays the greatest role in the marine low-carbon economy. The marine industry needs to optimize low-carbon technology and improve the advanced degree of industrial structure in order to realize the integrated development of a low-carbon economy and marine industry.

Correlation Modeling between Ocean Spatial Distribution and Economic Sustainability

The ocean is the second most vital space for human production and life, and it is a backbone of the ecosystem of the earth. There is a strong correlation between the ocean’s spatial distribution and environment; similarly, there is a strong correlation between spatial distribution and economic sustainability. This study proposes a strategy for analyzing the relationship between marine spatial layout and economic sustainability based on a correlation combination weighting model. The essential conditions of marine industry development are examined utilizing soft computing methodologies to analyze important theories of marine industry layout. The entropy method is used to compute the weight of the marine economic evaluation index. By maximizing the difference, we can get the upper and lower boundaries of the weight of the marine industry development combination. To study the association between ocean spatial arrangement and economic sustainability, the correlation assessment results are obtained using the combination weighting model. The correlation analysis results of the experimental data are used to determine the appropriate spatial layout of the marine industry, which has some practical implications for the long-term development of the marine industry layout economy and the coordination and interaction of land-sea systems.

Research on Pattern Extraction Method of Underwater Acoustic Signal Based on Linear Array

Underwater acoustic signal is an important reference data for marine information research. The research and application of underwater acoustic signal have been widely concerned and valued by countries and enterprises. With the needs of modern military development and the development of marine industry, the research and application of underwater acoustic signal will develop faster and faster. In order to better understand marine information, it is necessary to collect seawater acoustic signal data. Aiming at the purpose of recording underwater acoustic signals placed in the ocean for a long time, this study innovates the calibration and recording of large dynamic range of long-time underwater acoustic signals, improves the circuit setting methods such as receiving, amplification, and sampling, designs a large dynamic series of long-time underwater acoustic signal recording device, and adopts the linear array extraction method, so that it can monitor the underwater acoustic biological sound under the condition of low power. It can also monitor the blasting sound of offshore engineering. Hardware circuit design mainly includes main control chip selection, amplification circuit design, filter circuit design, analog-to-digital conversion circuit design, storage circuit design, and some auxiliary circuit design. The fourth chapter introduces the software development process of large dynamic range underwater acoustic signal recorder and mainly introduces the system development tool, system clock working method, real-time clock module working method, underwater acoustic signal acquisition method, data storage scheme design, and the use of FatFs file system. The underwater acoustic signal data is stored on a MicroSD in the form of TXT file; linear array extraction method is used for feature extraction. Compared to other methods, the transformer will suppress DC and low-frequency interference signals, thus achieving high-pass filtering characteristics. Finally, the performance and experimental results of the whole underwater acoustic signal recording device are analyzed. After testing, the underwater acoustic signal recording device designed in this paper works stably and can record underwater acoustic signals with large dynamic range for a long time in low-power mode.

Coevolution of Economic and Industrial Linkages within the Land-Sea Industrial Structure of China

The joint development of continental and marine economies has become an important driving force for the upgrading of industrial structures. However, because of the differences in resource endowment and development potential, developing industrial structures and the quality of economic development are uneven among regions. In this study, the added values of three land-sea industries in the three marine economic circles of northern, eastern, and southern China, were employed to clarify the evolutionary behavior of the industrial structure of these three circles on the land and sea; the synchronization, lag, equilibrium, and dislocation of developing the industrial structure were also explored which a gray relational model based on convex judgment and gray time difference analyses were used to construct a relational model from the static and dynamic aspects of the system, and the internal and external linkages of the industrial structure of the three circles were analyzed from the perspective of industrial correlation. The results show that: (1) Correlations among the linkages of the three economic circles in the marine industrial structure, both including and without temporal and spatial differences, and the marine feedback driver, differ markedly. (2) The effects of feedback for marine industrial development from the Eastern Marine Economic Circle were stronger, whereas those of the Southern Marine Economic Circle were weak and those of the Northern Marine Economic Circle were ambiguous. (3) A significant difference was observed in the degree of coevolution among the land-sea industrial structures of these areas. The Northern Marine Economic Circle exhibited a slightly higher degree of coevolution than the other two economic circles, showing a stable trend of coevolution and wide spatial development. The eastern and southern circles displayed high degrees of coordination in developing their industrial structures. The research results provide a reference for regional adjustment and optimization of industrial structure.

The Responsibility of Private Pawnshops in Facilitating Ecologically-Friendly Marine Economies

As the largest maritime country in the world, Indonesia has extremely large and diverse natural resources, both in the form of renewable and non-renewable natural resources. The natural wealth must be managed optimally to improve the welfare and prosperity of the Indonesian people. In the operation of marine economy, financial services also have a huge effect on the development of marine industry as a whole. This paper aims to analyze the supporting activities of auxiliary operations of financial services, especially pawnshops, in supporting the development of the ecologically friendly marine economies, particularly for vulnerable small fishermen. The research method used is empirical juridical by conducting library research related to legal principles, legal rules and legal norms related to private pawning. In addition, field research was also conducted to obtain primary data related to the existence of private pawnshops in the development of the fishing industry and its environmentally friendly approaches. The results of the study show that pawning has actually great potential for industrial development, including the fishing industry; but even though there are arrangements to facilitate the supervision of private pawning businesses, in practice there are still not many private pawns registered. Although not many have been registered, from time to time it shows progress. The existence of private pawnshops in Indonesia in the direct development of the fishing industry is still not widely used.

Spatial distinction analysis on marine ranch development potential in coastal areas of China

According to the 14th Five-Year Plan and the outline of 2035 long-term goals, a modern marine industrial system should be built, the layout of green offshore aquaculture should be optimized, and marine ranching should be built. The research on the construction of marine ranching can provide new ideas for sustainable ecological fishery and inject new vitality into the development of marine industry. In the future, the construction of marine ranching will be a vast world. In this paper, from the perspective of geography, the GC-TOPSIS method combined with the entropy weight TOPSIS method and the grey correlation method were used to construct 22 evaluation index systems to estimate the development potential of marine ranching construction in ten coastal provinces and municipalities of China from 2011 to 2016. The results showed that the overall development potential of marine ranching in ten provinces and urban areas had regional differences (north, central and south), and the differences in the north and south regions were obvious. The regional differences in the central coastal areas of China were not significant, and the development potentials of marine ranching in ten provinces and urban areas were all medium. The development potential of four criteria layers of marine ranching in ten coastal provinces and regions of China is different in space, and the development potential of marine ranching in the same region is unbalanced in all aspects of the criteria layers. To estimate the development potential of marine ranching in China’s ten coastal provinces and regions provides scientific support for the sustainable development of ecological fisheries, and has practical application value for the scientific planning of marine ranching and the selection of demonstration areas.

Research on dynamic comprehensive evaluation of allocation efficiency of green science and technology resources in China’s marine industry

Optimizing the allocation of science and technology resources is the key link to promote the efficient development of marine industry. This paper incorporates science and technology, economy and ecology into the accounting system for the allocation of marine science and technology resources, constructs the EBM model that considers the undesired output, and uses the GML index to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamic evolution of the allocation efficiency of green science and technology resources in China’s marine industry. The results indicate that: (1) Under the constraints of resources and environment, the allocation of science and technology resources in China’s marine industry is at the non-frontier level. (2) The allocation efficiency of green marine science and technology resources shows an “M-shaped” dynamic trend, and this trend of change is closely related to the marine science and technology policy. The improvement of the allocation efficiency of green marine science and technology resources mainly comes from technological progress rather than the improvement of technical efficiency. (3) There are obvious differences in the allocation efficiency of green marine science and technology resources among coastal regions. Among them, Liaoning, Shanghai, Guangdong and Guangxi are in the high efficiency range (>1), Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian are in the medium efficiency range (0.9–1), while Hainan and Hebei are in the low efficiency range (<0.9). Finally, this paper puts forward the corresponding policy recommendations for sustainable development of science and technology in China’s marine industry.

Research on the Optimization and Upgrading of Marine Tourism Products in Shanghai

The ocean has become a new theme of the world economic competition. The development of marine industry is an inevitable measure to stabilize the sustainable and healthy development of China’s national economy. As a leading industry of marine economy, marine tourism has great potential for development.Marine tourism products are the foundation and power source of marine tourism development. The optimization of tourism products plays the most direct and key role in the upgrading of tourism industry. Shanghai, located in the center of Yangtze River Delta, is one of the most developed regions in China. However, with the increasing competition in the tourism market, the development of marine tourism is inevitable.This paper analyzes the general situation of marine tourism resources and the development status of tourism products in Shanghai, and probes into the specific countermeasures for the upgrading of its products, so as to promote the high-efficiency development of marine economy in Shanghai.
