This paper presents SAGESS (spatial application generic environment system standards), an open framework location-based services (LBS) development architecture. It can be implemented without any third party software, and provides LBS developers with complete development control and technology choices. It also describes SAGE (spatial application generic environment), a methodology for creating LBS applications. It has the advantage of creating LBS applications that are light on the wireless device resources and are OS independent. It gives LBS developers the capability to build LBS applications based on generic templates, decreasing development cost and time. This paper presents a study of the deployment of a prototype LBS application on the SAGESS architecture platform, developed using the SAGE development toolkit.
