LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT OF EARLY CHILDREN THROUGH STORYTELLING METHODS IN NU 01 YOSOWILANGUN MUSLIMAT KINDERGARTEN

Language development (linguistics) is a child’s development in acquiring words effectively, both spoken and written. Children’s language development from an early age through the story telling method applied at the Muslimat NU 01 Yosowilangun kindegarteen aim to broaden horizon and knowledge as well as as communication tool and help children to interact well wih their sosial environment. The story telling method is an effort to develop language skills in early childhood. So the reasercher raised the problem of how children ‘s language development occour aften an early age through the story telling method at Muslimat NU 01 Yosowilangun Kindegarteen. To answer the research problem, a qualitative descriptive type of research was used. The research subject were teacher and student. The data collection technique were observation, interview, and docomentation. The result of reaserch are the development of story telling methode has been developed for children language development from an early age. In implementation the teacher has optimally used the story telling methode. Qualitative data analysis is inductive in nature namely an analysis based on the data obtained, then developed. The data revealed that out of 10 children, 3 children (20%), were included in the BSB (according to expextation) category, 1 children (6%) was included in the MB (developing) category, and no one children in the BB (not yet developing) showing that 94% of children’s language skills are in very good categoryand developing as expected

Efektivitas Pembelajaran Kontekstual berbasis Outing Class dalam Mengembangkan Kemampuan Berbahasa pada Anak Usia Dini

Outing class-based contextual learning in developing language skills in young children needs to be done to avoid boredom in the learning process. Outing class learning provides an opportunity to express children's language skills. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of outing class-based contextual learning in improving early childhood language development. This type of research is qualitative research. The results of this research indicate that the outing class learning method is effectively applied in contextual learning to improve aspects of language development in early childhood. In the new normal period, this method is suitable to be applied in learning because it can eliminate the boredom of studying during the pandemic and can add direct experience so that it can improve children's language skills.

Utilization of Power Point-Based Digital Technology in Improving Early Childhood Language Development

This research aims to determine and improve the language development of early childhood. So, through this observation, researchers created PowerPoint as a use of digital technology to support learning activities with the hope that through this activity it can help teachers in delivering learning material and to improve children's language development. This research uses a literature study method with a qualitative research approach. Secondary data obtained online is then compiled, analyzed and then concluded. Learning is often centered only on the teacher and sometimes children find it difficult to concentrate while learning is taking place, this is what causes a lack of language development in children. So this research aims to find out and improve children's language development through PowerPoint as the use of digital technology to support learning.

Social inequalities in early childhood language development during the COVID-19 pandemic: a descriptive study with data from three consecutive school entry surveys in Germany

BackgroundSocial health inequalities are still of great public health importance in modern societies. The COVID-19 pandemic may have affected social inequalities in people's health due to containment measures. As these measures particularly affected children, they might have been particularly vulnerable to increased social inequalities. The aim of the study was to describe health inequalities during the pandemic based on language delay (LD) in children in order to inform public health interventions for a population at risk of long-term health and education inequalities.MethodsData of 5–7 year old children from three consecutive school entry surveys in the German federal state of Brandenburg were used, including data compulsorily collected before the pandemic (2018/2019: n = 19,299), at the beginning of the pandemic (2019/2020: n = 19,916) and during the pandemic (2020/2021: n = 19,698). Bivariate and multivariate binary regression analyses [OR, 95% CI] cross-sectionally examined the relationship between the prevalence of LD [yes/no] and social inequalities, operationalized by family socioeconomic position [SEP low/middle/high], migration background [native-German language/non-native German language] and length of kindergarten attendance [< 4 years/ ≥ 4 years]. Factors contributing to inequality in LD were examined by socioeconomic stratification.ResultsCross-sectionally, LD prevalence has decreased overall (2018/2019: 21.1%, 2019/2020: 19.2%, 2020/2021: 18.8%), and among children from both high SEP and native German-speaking families. As LD prevalence increased among children from families with low SEP and remained stable among non-native German speakers, social inequalities in LD prevalence increased slightly during the pandemic i) by low SEP (2018/2019: OR = 4.41, 3.93–4.94; 2020/2021: OR = 5.12, 4.54–5.77) and ii) by non-German native language (2018/2019: OR = 2.22, 1.86–2.66; 2020/2021: OR = 2.54, 2.19–2.95). During the pandemic, both migration background and kindergarten attendance determined LD prevalence in the high and middle SEP strata. However, the measured factors did not contribute to LD prevalence in children from families with low SEP.ConclusionSocial inequalities in LD increased due to opposing trends in prevalence comparing low and high SEP families. To promote health equity across the life course, early childhood should be of interest for tailored public health actions (e.g. through targeted interventions for kindergarten groups). Further analytical studies should investigate determinants (e.g., parental investment).

Bedtime Storytelling: A Method to Enhance Early Childhoods’ Language Development

Psychologically, young children generally enjoy listening to stories told by their parents. This study aims to analyze the impact of storytelling before bed by parents in order to improve early childhood language development. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The respondents of this study were 15 mothers and 15 children aged 5-6 years. The methods used to collect data were in-depth interviews and observation. Data analysis techniques use qualitative and quantitative descriptive. The results of the research show that storytelling before bed impacts children's fluency in pronouncing words, vocabulary mastery, self-confidence, and creativity in retelling the stories they hear. In conclusion, storytelling before bed can empirically improve children's language development significantly. Apart from that, this research has implications for the teaching and learning process in PAUD units, where teachers are advised to use the storytelling method during the teaching and learning process. Parents are also advised to get into the habit of telling stories before bed as one of the methods used in developing language in early childhood, especially for young children. 5-6 years.

ABSTRACTBased on the results of initial research carried out by the author, the problem in the PGRI 3 Ceria Cendikia Kindergarten, Sokobanah District, Sampang Regency that was discovered in the field was the role of teachers in PAUD in stimulating children's language development in Sampang Regency. Effect of online parent training in promoting language development of children with language delay in Hubei province, China.

Training parents to implement language and communication intervention strategies is an effective approach to promote language development for children with language delay. This study introduces an online parent training program conducted in Hubei province, China, which was designed to help parents of language-delayed children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental language disorder (DLD) or global developmental delay (GDD) apply language intervention strategies into daily interactions and promote their children's language development at home. The Bethel Hearing and Speaking Training Center Family Training for Early Communication & Language Development (Bethel Family Training Program, BFT) (Bethel HSTC, 2020) was designed to improve the language and communication skills for children with language delay in a naturalistic way. The caregivers (including parents, grandparents and other main caregivers) participated in an 8-h online program, including lectures on milestones in child language development, common misunderstandings of child language development, and three basic family language intervention strategies ('Looking together, playing together, and talking together') incorporating active learning through video analysis and discussion. Tongji Hospital in Hubei then continued with 3 months of online home intervention monitoring to all the caregivers via weekly online Q&As led by BFT certified speech therapists' team. The Gesell Developmental Schedules (GDS) was carried out before the online parent training program and after the 3-month online home intervention monitoring. 146 families whose children aged 12-68 months with language delay participated in the online training program. The results of the GDS assessments conducted before and after the program showed that not only did the developmental quotient (DQ) of language improve, but so did the DQ of social behaviour and adaptive behaviour (p < 0.001). There is no between-group difference in the application of three strategies between the ASD group and the DLD or GDD group (p > 0.05). Furthermore, both caregivers' ability to apply 'looking together, playing together, talking together' strategies and the effective interaction time played important roles in improving the child's language abilities. The online parent training focusing on improving daily interaction with children through speech-language stimulation strategies promoted the development of language skills. It is an economic and practical approach for children with language delay who have limited access to local language intervention programs. What is already known on the subject Parent-implemented language intervention is an effective approach at improving children's language development. Telepractice is an appropriate model of service delivery for audiologists and speech-language therapists and may be the primary mode of service delivery or may supplement in-person services. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge This paper explores the effectiveness of an online parent training program and provides new evidence that online training on language support strategies (looking together, playing together, talking together) followed by home intervention monitoring works for Mandarin-speaking children and it is equally effective for children with ASD and non-ASD diagnosis. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? Developmental behavioural paediatricians and speech-language therapists in countries and areas that lack sufficient training resource for every child will have the option to deliver parent training and home intervention monitoring online, which will save time and cost considerably while offering convenience.

The power of social reading experiences in early years

In September 2023, the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) published its findings on a three-year research project, in partnership with the Imagination Library UK, designed to improve children's language and literacy development in early years by providing access to quality texts and opportunities for book sharing at home and in the classroom. Factors associated with children's cognitive, language, and motor development in deprived urban settings in Bangladesh.

Children's development is multifactorial. Although there have been several studies exploring the association of children's development with maternal, child, and environmental factors, we are unaware of any study that assessed those factors in children whose mothers were enrolled in a social safety net programme in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with disadvantaged children's cognitive, language, and motor development at age 6-16 months in deprived settings of urban Bangladesh and to identify relative importance of these factors of children's development. We also explored if there were any gender differences in child development. This cross-sectional study was conducted in a deprived setting of urban Bangladesh. Bayley III was used for assessing children's cognitive, language, and motor development. Multivariable linear regression model was used to find the factors associated with children's development, and dominance analysis was used to explore the relative importance of the factors. Out of the total 599 mother-child dyads, 303 (50.58%) were girls. The factors associated with children's development were length-for-age Z-score (cognitive: B = 1.21 [95% CI = 0.31, 2.11], P = 0.008; language: 1.67 [0.79, 2.55] P < 0.001; motor: 2.15 [1.01, 3.29] P < 0.001) and home environment (cognitive: 0.58 [0.27, 0.89] P < 0.001; language: 0.59 [0.27, 0.92], P < 0.001; motor: 0.44 [0.09, 0.79] P = 0.013). Girls had higher cognitive (1.90 [0.17, 3.6], P = 0.031) and language (2.53 [0.55, 4.51], P = 0.013) development compared with boys. Families with a higher number of under five children within the households had lower language (-1.57 [-2.78, -0.36], P = 0.011) development. Violence against the mother and the families' food security status were not associated with the children's development. Children's length-for-age Z-score (27%) and home stimulation environment (23%) were the most important factors of cognitive development. Children's nutritional status and home environment are important factors for disadvantaged children's development in deprived urban settings of Bangladesh. Both early child development-focussed parenting and nutrition interventions should be considered when designing child development programmes in urban settings in low- and middle-income countries.

Use of digital devices, family functioning, and language development in preschool children: a cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to analyse the relationship between the use of digital devices, family function, and language development in preschool children. This cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study included a sample of 93 parent-child dyads. The children were of an average age of 57.01 ± 9.95 months, and the majority were female. The data collection instruments included a questionnaire on the use of digital devices, the Portuguese version of the Family Flexibility and Cohesion Evaluation Scale - Version IV (FACES-IV), and a Preschool Language Test (TL-ALPE). The findings showed a greater tendency of children to use smartphones, tablets, and television for 0-3 hours daily. The analysis of the responses on the FACES-IV and TL-ALPE instruments showed that most of the participating families were of the balanced type and that most children had normal language development. Statistically significant relationships were found between the FACES-IV subscales and TL-ALPE subtests, FACES-IV subscales and the use of digital devices, and the use of digital devices and TL-ALPE subtests. Notably, children in more balanced family functioning scored higher on TL-ALPE tests, and the time spent using digital devices may compromise language development. This study highlights the impact of digital device use and the role of family functioning on children's language development, suggesting that moderate digital device use and balanced family functioning are facilitating factors for good language development.

Language development in children's natural environments: People, places, and things.

Our goal in this chapter is to describe young children's experiences with language by examining three domains-people, places, and things-that define and influence their language input. We highlight how features of each of these three domains could provide useful learning opportunities, as well as how differences in infants' and toddlers' experiences may affect their long-term language skills. However, we ultimately suggest that a full understanding of early environments must move beyond a focus on individual experiences and include the broader systems that shape young children's lives, including both tangible aspects of the environment, such as physical resources or locations, and more hidden factors, such as cultural considerations, community health, or economic constraints.

Indicators for Building a Norm-Referenced Dataset Based on Conversational Language Samples in Typical Mandarin-speaking Children: An Exploratory Study

For proper assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of language disorders in Mandarin children, it is important to have measures that closely track the course of normal development. The current study uses a large collection of spontaneous conversational language samples to track the developmental course of five language measures: mean length of utterance (MLU), the MLU of the five longest utterances (MLU5), vocD, number of repetitions, and number of retracings. We used cross-validation-based linear regression to estimate the relationship between age, gender and each of the five variables derived from the conversational language samples in 101 typically developing Mandarin-speaking children aged 3 to 7. Each of the five measures showed significant age-related effects during the period from age 3 to age 7. As norm-referenced measures of language development in children speaking Mandarin, these developmental data could inform clinical therapists regarding assessments and interventions for children with language disorder or impairment.

Investigating the Relationship of Parental Factors, Negligence and Language Delay among Children for Speech and Language Centers in the United Arab Emirates: A Literature Review

The involvement of parents in the treatment process is essential for the child to achieve language developmental outcomes. This literature delves into the intricate relationship between parental factors, negligence and language delay of children in the United Arab Emirates. This is intended for reference by Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) to help them analyze the specific parental factors that may contribute to the development or exacerbation of language delay in children. The findings of this review are substantial, disentangling modifiable parental factors such as socioeconomic status of parents, their education level, family structure and their involvement in their child’s education and activities significantly impact children’s communication development and well-being. This paper review examines a notable association between parental negligence and increased screen time for children, emphasizing the importance of parental supervision in managing screen exposure. The implications of this encourage educational programs from government and private institutions and empower parents and Speech and Language Therapists (SLT’s) to foster positive language development in children. Recommendations include sensitivity and comprehensive approach considering cultural, parental, and environmental factors.

‘’Parent School’’ Evaluation of the Program: A Qualitative Study

Introduction: Implementation of systematic education programs for the healthy development of children can contribute to learning the basic building blocks for the cognitive, social, emotional, motor, and language development of children while improving the knowledge and behaviors of parent. This study was conducted to evaluate the contributions of the “Parent School” program to parents. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on July 1-15, 2023, using the focus group technique using the phenomenology study design, one of the qualitative research models. A total of 23 parent actively participated in the “Parent School” program. Among the parent, 11 parent who agreed to do post-program evaluation constituted the sample of this study. A descriptive data form consisting of 5 questions and a semi-structured interview form consisting of 3 questions were used to collect data. Three nurses analyzed participants’ opinions, and thematic coding was performed. Results: In the interviews conducted with the parent, four themes (Emotional change in the parent, behavioral change in the parent, change in the child, and difficulty in transition) and 14 sub-themes (Awareness, consistency in discipline, self-confidence, self-compassion, selfefficacy, playing, effective communication, spending time together, behavioral change, contribution to growth and development, emotional state, comparison with others, family elders and feeding behavior) were determined. Conclusion: In the interviews with the parents at the end of the program, it was determined that there were changes in themselves and their children and that they had difficulty with some changes. In particular, they stated that they had difficulties with comparison, conflicts with family elders or feeding. Keywords: Parent, parenting education, qualitative research, nursing.

Introduction. Communication and language development in children with (mild) intellectual disability is generally delayed. Roma national minority children are sequential bilinguals, most introduced to the Croatian language upon entering the educational system. Information on communication in the natural context can be obtained through checklists completed by children's communication partners. Objectives. This study aims to obtain insight into the communication and Croatian language abilities of Croatian and Roma children with mild intellectual disabilities. Method. The study participants were 52 children between 9 and 16 years old (22 Croatian and 30 Roma). Their performance on the Children's Communication Checklist was analyzed and compared to published thresholds and each other. Results. The performance of Croatian and Roma children on the pragmatic composite is comparable to that of British peers with intellectual disability, as both groups scored below the normal range. Only the Roma children performed below clinical thresholds on the Speech and Syntax scale. No group displayed autism features. Mann-Whitney test showed significant differences between the groups in Speech output and Syntax subscales, indicating Roma children's poorer Croatian language abilities. Overall pragmatic abilities did not differ between the groups. Both groups scored below the threshold on the Coherence and Use of conversational context subscales, showing comparable pragmatic profiles. However, Croatian children outperformed Roma children on the Coherence, Use of conversational context, and Conversational rapport subscales. Conclusion. Roma children use the Croatian language in a way comparable to their Croatian peers despite being less proficient in its structure. Pragmatic abilities should be targeted in children with intellectual disabilities.

Putting the child in the driver's seat: Insights into language development from children's interactions in preschool classrooms.

Children's own language production has a role in structuring the language of their conversation partners and influences their own development. Children's active participation in their own language development is most apparent in the rich body of work investigating language in natural environments. The advent of automated measures of vocalizations and movement have made such in situ research increasingly feasible. In this chapter, we review recent research on children's language development in context with a particular focus on research employing automated methods in preschool classrooms for children between ages 2 and 5 years. These automated methods indicate that the speech directed to preschool children from specific peers predicts the child's speech to those peers on a subsequent observation occasion. Similar patterns are seen in the influence of peer and teacher phonemic diversity on the phonemic diversity of children's speech to those partners. In both cases, children's own speech to partners was the best predictor of their language abilities, suggesting their active role in their own development. Finally, new research suggests the potential of machine learning to predict children's speech in group contexts, and to transcribe classroom speech to better understand the content of children's conversations and how they change with development.

The influence of home environment on 2-year-old Chinese children's language development: the mediating effect of executive function and the moderating effect of temperament.

Prior research highlighted the effect of home environment on the language development of young children. Recent research has mainly discussed the moderating effect of personality traits like temperament. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism about the relationship between home environments to children's language development remains incompletely understood. This study explored how home environment impacts the language development of 2-year-old toddlers and the role of temperament and executive function in this relationship. We used the Chinese Child Adaptive Behavior Scale, the Temperament Scale for 1-3 years old of toddlers and the Home Environment Scale for Infants' and Toddlers' families to assess children's language development, temperament, and home environment. Simultaneously, the research used the Stroop-like day-night task and the multiple location search task to evaluate children's executive function. A total of 117 2-year-old children as well as their parents were involved in the study. The results revealed that home environment significantly predicts children's language ability with executive function as a mediating role. Temperament dimensions including extraversion, independence, reactivity, and social inhibition play a moderating role between home environment and executive function. The findings contributed to the improved implementation of home education tailored to children with different temperament traits, offering effective support for the cognitive and language development of young children.

Parental perspectives on the impact of screen time on the language skills of typically developing Indian children.

The overuse of screen-based devices results in developmental problems in children. Parents are an integral part of the children's language development. The present study explores the parental perspectives on the impact of screen time on the language skills of typically developing school-going children using a developed questionnaire. 192 parents of typically developing children between 6 and 10 years of age participated in the study. Phase 1 of the study included the development of a questionnaire targeting the impact of screen devices on language development. The questionnaire was converted into an online survey and was circulated among the parents in Phase 2. Descriptive statistics were performed on the retrieved data and a chi-square test was done to determine the association between the use of screen devices across all language parameters. Parents reported television and smartphones to be the most used type of device, with a large proportion of children using screen-based devices for 1-2 hours per day. Most parents reported children prefer watching screens mainly for entertainment purposes, occasionally under supervision, without depending on them as potential rewards. The impact of screen-based devices on language skills has been discussed under the semantics, syntax, and pragmatic aspects of language. The findings of this study will help identify the existing trends in the usage of screen-based devices by children, thereby identifying potential contributing factors towards language delays. This information will also benefit in parental counselling during the interventional planning of children with language delays.
