Am I building a bubble around me? A phenomenographic study exploring students’ perceptions of online personalised filters and information literacy

For networked learning to be successful, students need good information literacy skills. These skills will enable them to move away from being "passive recipients of digitally distributed information" (Wiske, 2011) to become critical thinkers willing to challenge, discuss, collaborate and connect with other learners and teachers. This small-scale study uses phenomenography to investigate students’ perceptions and experiences of personalised filters, which present a challenge for educators concerned with developing information literacy skills. Findings show that students are comfortable with filters to find basic information. However, for more complex ideas, students felt they needed to adopt sophisticated search strategies.

Development of Technopreneur Leadership to Improve High School Teachers' Teaching Performance: Innovative Approaches in Education

This study aims to describe technopreneur leadership development as an innovative approach to improving the teaching performance of high school teachers. The research method used is quantitative survey research with teachers as research respondents with a sample of 54 respondents based on non-probability sampling techniques with saturated sample types. The data collection technique was used through a closed Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using simple correlation and regression tests. The results showed that technopreneur leadership development can positively impact the teaching performance of high school teachers. Technopreneur leadership development involves introducing and applying relevant technology in the learning process, the development of digital skills and information literacy for teachers, and establishing a culture of quality in schools. In this context, technopreneur leadership plays a role in facilitating teachers to adopt technology effectively, deal with change, motivate and empower education staff, and create a supportive environment for innovation. This research is an important contribution to understanding the importance of technopreneur leadership development as an innovative approach to improving the teaching performance of high school teachers.

How information management is taught in school today: A student’s perspective. The results of multilevel latent class analysis

The article presents the results of an analysis of students’ responses about teaching them how to work with information when solving learning tasks. The results of a survey conducted in the course of the project on monitoring the digital transformation of educational organizations in 2021 were used. Four specific students’ learning profiles have been identified, depending on the tasks they receive from the teacher to develop information literacy skills. Three typical groups of schools have been identified according to the types of profiles of teaching students to work with information. The influence of schools’ digital equipment, activities aimed at upgrading the functioning and development of innovative methods of educational work at school on the existing practices of teaching students to work with information has been analyzed. It was found that if a school is provided with digital equipment for students’ individual learning, teachers are more willing to give them tasks to work with information in the digital environment. It has been revealed that the development and discussion of concepts and plans for mastering digital technologies in pedagogical teams is positively related to the practice of using tasks to develop students’ information literacy. The recommendations for the formation of information literacy in general education school students are offered.

Information Literacy of Tuberculosis Patients in Hospital Health Services

In implementing health service management, the role of communication is needed, because it must determine the cause of a disease in a patient. Therefore, knowledge and communication skills must be possessed by all health workers, because they will influence patient perceptions, patient assessments of services, trust, and patient recovery rates. The research method used is a qualitative approach, data collection techniques through interview methods aim to obtain information from participants or sources through direct face-to-face dialogue between researchers and sources. The concept of information literacy standards is composed of three basic components, namely access, evaluation, and use. Patients in the millennial category browse the internet to find out more about this disease. On the internet site, the explanation is clearer and more detailed. Apart from that, health service information is also obtained in the form of banners, posters, pamphlets, or other printed media available at the health service facility. The research conducted showed that tuberculosis patients could develop information literacy about the need for information about the disease they were suffering from. This ability accesses, evaluates, and utilizes the required information. Fulfilling information needs related to their illness is available through information services available at the health center where their health facility is located or at the referral hospital where they seek treatment.

Global information literacy standards and frameworks - implications for the reimagined India

The present paper is the outcome of the efforts to review the global scenario of information literacy standards and frameworks and its implications in reimaging Indian higher education in the digital environment. Several initiatives have been taken by the institutions at the global level all over the world in order to develop information literacy standards and frameworks. However, for the present study author has selected only major initiatives that are accepted and used by academic fraternity to create information literate citizens. While exploring studies on information literacy in Indian scenario author found that very frequently the topic has been researched by many researchers but not yet any standard or framework has been developed for information literacy in India. The author emphasizes the need to have uniform standards at the university level to conduct an information literacy program at all levels of higher education, in order to cater information needs of generation next in the digital environment. It will result in creating responsible information literate citizens even in a multidimensional digital environment.

This study aims to analyze using the seven pillars theory in interviews with students while working on class assignments. The seven pillars theory is a framework used to develop information literacy skills. Qualitative research methods use in-depth interviews as a data collection instrument. Interviews were conducted to understand how students use the Seven Pillars theory steps in collecting, evaluating, and using information when doing their coursework. The study results show that students tend to understand the Seven pillars theory steps well. They recognize the importance of identifying information needs, finding relevant sources, and selecting the most essential information for their task. However, most students face difficulties evaluating the reliability and sustainability of the information they find. In terms of information, students tend to use the information they see in their assignments. However, there were some challenges, such as difficulties in synthesizing and integrating disparate information into their task framework. This study's findings indicate that using the Seven Pillars theory in interviewing students while doing coursework can help them develop better information literacy skills. This study recommends improving teaching and learning approaches in tertiary institutions by emphasizing the use of the Seven Pillars theory in developing students' information literacy skills.

Formation of digital competences of older teenagers in the process of sports and recreational activities

The educational process, among other important tasks, should be directed to the formation of digital competences of children and school youth, including in the process of sports and health activities, since information technologies open up wide opportunities for the introduction of new modern forms and methods in working with children and school youth.
 The formation of digital competences of older teenagers in the process of sports and health activities is an integral part of the process of forming a mature personality, prepared for life, ready for self-analysis and self-realization, able to resist the unwanted effects of information flow and manipulation.
 A methodological toolkit aimed at forming the digital competences of older teenagers in the process of sports and recreational activities can be: cloud services in education, Web 2.0 services, creation of presentations; conducting video lessons, online training; development of online travel; involvement of older teenagers in research and information projects aimed at popularizing a healthy lifestyle, expanding knowledge about physical culture and sports, hygiene, etc.; use of interactive tasks; conducting fitness battles and other activities.
 The advantages of forming digital competences in the process of sports and health activities for older teenagers are: formation of critical and analytical thinking skills; popularization of a healthy lifestyle through the use of digital technologies; development of information literacy and data processing skills; development of search activity; development of cooperation and interaction skills; the opportunity to be involved in sports and health activities (increase one's own physical health indicators) in the online mode.

The timeless relevance of libraries in the age of artificial intelligence: A review

Libraries have a history dating back centuries, serving as guardians of knowledge and fostering intellectual growth. Libraries have long been a cornerstone of human civilization, serving as repositories of knowledge, cultural hubs, and learning centers. However, in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), some have questioned the relevance of libraries. This article explores the timeless relevance of libraries in an era marked by rapid technological advancements. The article uses a qualitative method and draws on a review of academic articles, studies, and case studies about libraries, artificial intelligence (AI), and digitalization. The analysis focuses on the historical importance of libraries, the challenges they confront in the age of AI, and prospective approaches to incorporating AI into library services. Libraries play a vital role in fostering these skills, offering a range of resources and educational programs to help individuals navigate the digital landscape effectively. Librarians, with their expertise, guide users in assessing the credibility of online sources, understanding data privacy, and developing information literacy skills. By promoting digital literacy, libraries empower individuals to make informed decisions in the age of AI, mitigating the risks associated with misinformation and algorithmic biases. Libraries remain relevant and essential in our society. Beyond their role as knowledge repositories, libraries promote critical thinking, digital literacy, community engagement, and equitable access to information. As we navigate the complexities of the digital age, libraries continue to serve as intellectual and social sanctuaries, fostering human connections and preserving the values that make us uniquely human.

Information Literacy Programmes at the Academic Level in the Field of Law

Purpose: In law libraries in the Republic of Croatia, only a small number of information literacy programmes have been recorded. This indicates the need to strengthen and promote more effective teaching of information literacy in the field of law. The aim of this paper is to analyse the published literature to gain insight into the existing knowledge regarding information literacy in the field of law over the past 30 years in the Republic of Croatia. This analysis aims to determine possible directions for development and to find more effective teaching methods for information literacy. Methodology/approach: The methodology used included a qualitative research approach, specifically content analysis of works published in the last 30 years concerning information literacy at the academic level in the field of law in the Republic of Croatia. Results: The development of information literacy at the academic level in the field of law can be observed in parallel with the development of information literacy at the broader academic level in the Republic of Croatia. The most significant changes can be seen over the past five years, both at the theoretical and practical level of law school library work. Research on information literacy in the field of law, initially primarily focused on user education, is deepening and expanding, both in terms of methodology and content, because of intense and dynamic changes in the information and educational environment. As a result, further directions of development should be guided by the need for more research on the essential literacy skills of the 21st century for all stakeholders in the educational process. Such research would contribute to a greater understanding of the most relevant content and methods to be included in information literacy programmes tailored to the specifics of the legal discipline. Research limitation: A literature analysis revealed numerous different terms related to information literacy at the academic level in the field of law, especially in works published in the 1990s, when the term “information literacy” was not established in the Republic of Croatia. Therefore, there is a possibility of unintentional oversight of specific works. Another limitation of the research is the role of one evaluator/researcher in implementing the content analysis of the publications due to possible subjectivity in the analysis. Originality/practical implications: This study is one of the first to offer detailed insights into the current trends in information literacy development at the academic level in the field of law over the past 30 years. On a practical level, the author aims to encourage academic librarians to create and implement formal information literacy programmes within the realm of law and its related libraries.

Integrated Instruction to Develop Information Literacy Skills of Undergraduate Students

This study designed a technologically integrated course to develop the information literacy skills of 100 first-year students from the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University, Thailand. The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model was integrated into an information literacy skills instructional design. A pre-and post-test design was adopted to measure the students’ information literacy skills. During the sessions, interactive open sources were employed as the technology-integrated instruction for the online classroom learning activities. After the course completion, participants retook the test, from which it was found that the post-test information literacy scores were significantly higher than the pre-test scores for all information literacy components. However, the low-performing students’ pre-and post-test scores for information evaluation showed no statistically significant differences. Therefore, developing the information evaluation skills of this group should be considered. This study’s findings could be beneficial for instructors and learning designers seeking to design courses that develop the information literacy skills of undergraduate students.

Information-seeking Strategies Used and Challenges Encountered by Art and Design Students in Uganda When Seeking Information

Access to relevant information is crucial for Art and Design students to meet their information needs and achieve their educational goals. This paper explores the information-seeking strategies used by Art and Design students in diplomaawarding institutions in Uganda, and the challenges they encounter when seeking information to meet their information needs. This is part of a doctoral study that investigated the information-seeking behaviour of Art and Design students in diploma-awarding institutions in Uganda. The study population comprised Art and Design students in the four Art and Design institutions, library heads in the same institutions, and directors at the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). Data was collected using questionnaire, interview and observation methods. Data was collected from February to August 2022. The study revealed that Art and Design students use various information-seeking strategies to locate and access information. Browsing online images, photographing activities in the environment, recording videos of activities in the environment, and consulting Art and Design librarians were the most used. The least used strategies included browsing art and design collections on library shelves, using keywords, and using Boolean operators. The study found that Art and Design students encountered varied challenges when seeking information. The key challenges were lack of Internet at the institutions, inadequate and outdated information materials in the library, slow Internet, high cost of Internet data, and lack or inadequate knowledge to evaluate the quality of information on the Internet. The key recommendations included the need for Art and Design institutions to invest heavily in ICT infrastructure, including Internet connectivity, and also to develop information literacy courses for the students; the need for the NCHE prioritise monitoring of the study institutions to ensure compliance with library standards; and the need for the Government of Uganda zero-rate the Internet in the study institutions.

Development and implementation of the MobILcaps application for the teaching and development of information literacy in Higher Education

This paper aims at develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the MobIlCaps mobile application. On the basis of cognitive, constructivist and connectivist theories, it has been developed on an instructional design model, based on the user experience. In the context of mobile teaching in higher education, an innovative application is proposed for the self-learning of information literacy by students of Social Sciences. With the collaboration of both teachers and students, the application was developed, following the ADDIE model, through the phases of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The last phase provided the improvement proposals for the optimization of the final version of the tool, a progressive open access website. The application is organized into six capsules that follow the framework of ACRL (2015): learn, search, evaluate, create, research and disseminate. It includes multimedia resources in the form of microcontents that highlight readability, organization and visualization as characteristics. Beyond Session Counting: A Program Development Model for Information Literacy in a Liberal Arts College

ABSTRACT Academic librarians have long struggled to evaluate, report, promote and grow library services in order to effect positive changes in curricula. Metrics reported to faculty and administration generally include how many information literacy sessions are taught, how many students were present, and what subject areas were taught. However, merely counting information literacy sessions does not convey goals, opportunity, or progress. The Information Literacy Program Development Model (ILPDM) described in this article demonstrates how academic librarians at a small, liberal arts college moved beyond counting the number of information literacy sessions as a measure of value by clearly defining what a successful information literacy program should look like, and by demonstrating the impact, strengths, and limitations of a developing information literacy program. The model further allows librarians to track progress and identify opportunities for information literacy in each department and program across campus, and provides focal points for goal setting, outreach, and assessment. The model is adapted from the software industry’s Capability Maturity Model (CMM), later known as the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), which tracks the evolution of complex processes along a continuum of five development levels.

Development and Optimization of Skills in Searching, Processing and Analysing Information from Various Sources in the future Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) training: from Educational Requirements to Scientific Improvement

The study is devoted to the issue of development and optimization of the skills of searching, processing and analysing information from various sources in the training of future doctors of philosophy (PhD). The purpose of the article is to justify the importance and relevance of the development and optimization of the skills of information searching, processing and analysing for doctors of philosophy (PhD) on specialty 015 Professional education (by specialization) at different stages of their academic and scientific career. Methods. To achieve the goal, the authors used the following methods: analysis, synthesis of regulative and scientific and pedagogical sources, generalization, observation, own scientific and pedagogical experience. The results. The relevance of the problem of developing and optimizing the skills of information searching from various sources, its processing and analysing in the training of future doctors of philosophy (PhD) has been proven. Modern research in the field of psychology and pedagogy was analysed (John Sweller – the study of cognitive load and thinking processes, on the ability of students to process and analyse information; Richard Mayer – the study of cognitive aspects of education, including methods of presenting information and its perception by students; Carol Kuhlthau – information processes in education and development of information literacy). Attention is focused on the possibilities of researching the analysed topic through the lens of the Carol Kuhlthau 's Information Search Process (ISP) Model. The essence of the notion of "informational and analytical competence of a post-graduate student (future doctor of philosophy (PhD))" has been determined. Conclusions. It is noted that the importance of informational and analytical competence is that it allows effective performance of research tasks: scientific intelligence (finding and selecting relevant information helps a post-graduate student to determine the scientific validity of its research and find out whether similar work has been carried out before); evaluation of information (the ability to critically evaluate information helps a post-graduate student to determine its reliability and relevance, which are key factors in making scientific decisions); analysis and interpretation (the ability to analyse and interpret information helps a post-graduate student to identify patterns and connections between various aspects of the research); scientific writing (scientific writing skills allow a post-graduate student to create scientific papers and a dissertation that meet the standards of the scientific community); effective communication of results (the ability to present the research and results clearly and convincingly helps a post-graduate student communicate with colleagues, receive funding and disseminate findings); ethical aspect (adherence to ethical standards in the use of information and in conducting research, academic culture and academic integrity is extremely important for scientific activity). The development of criteria, their content and the levels of formation of the informational and analytical competence of post-graduate students (future PhDs) are defined as the prospects for further research.

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate how augmented reality (AR) technology is adopted in the library to transform it into an immersive and interactive platform and highlights the future possibilities of the application of AR in libraries.Design/methodology/approachThe study examines the current applications of AR in the library by consulting related literature and analyzing different library websites covering diverse geographical areas.FindingsThe paper with examples summarizes the current library practices of using AR technology and focuses on the AR-supported major library initiatives – right from document tracking, inventory management, wayfinding, supporting innovation and research, developing information literacy skills, etc.Originality/valueThe paper explores the possibility of improving user experience in the library by introducing AR applications and engaging users in an interactive and captivating environment.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and their Impact on Academic Library Services: A Study of Some Selected Private University Libraries in Bangladesh

Purpose: The objective of this study is to find out the impact of massive open online courses (MOOCs) on academic library services by identifying the opportunities of adopting MOOCs as a library service. It also proposes a model how to employ MOOCs as a library service. Methodology: This study follows a questionnaire method to collect data from the private university librarians in Bangladesh. Out of the 108 private universities in Bangladesh, 75 universities were selected as respondents for the questionnaire survey. In total, 38 university librarians have responded to the survey. The response rate was 50.66%. Descriptive analysis was carried out to analyse the collected data. Findings: The findings of this study have revealed the current status of MOOCs as a library service. The majority of the librarians are aware of MOOCs, but they do not have connection with any specific MOOC platforms. The study also identified many opportunities for MOOCs in academic libraries, such as clearing copyright content and licensing, preservation of MOOC contents for users, and assisting with fair use of reading materials. Additionally, MOOCs offer opportunities for developing information literacy skills, fostering collaboration among academic institutions in building courses, providing motivational or library-related courses to users and library professionals, etc. Originality/Value: This is the first attempt to explore the status of MOOCs as a library service in the context of private university libraries in Bangladesh.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to identify changes in information literacy, self-regulation, and online learning effectiveness of adult learners, and to explore the structural relationship between the three variables. Methods A potential growth model was used by using data surveyed in 2014 (9th), 2016 (10th), 2018 (11th), and 2020 (12th) of the Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2005 (KELS 2005). The trend of change over time and the longitudinal relationship was verified. Results As a result of examining the trend of change over time, the average of information literacy, self-regulation, and online learning effectiveness did not change significantly, and the average of online learning effectiveness was relatively high. In addition, both information literacy and self-regulation statically predicted the initial value of the online learning effectiveness, and the rate of change was also significantly predicted. Finally, it was found that information literacy was greater than self-regulation in terms of the influence on the longitudinal change of online learning effectiveness. Conclusions Discussions and suggestions were presented on the significant effects of information literacy and self-regulation on the longitudinal changes in online learning effectiveness of adult learners. To ensure stable online learning effectiveness, prior training to improve competencies such as information literacy and self-regulation is required from the beginning, and support is especially required so that learners can acquire and adapt to new technologies. Through the results of this study, it will be possible to seek ways to develop information literacy and self-regulation skills to increase the effectiveness of online learning in a situation where the importance and application fields of online learning are expanding.

Does Mentoring Directly Improve Students’ Research Skills? Examining the Role of Information Literacy and Competency Development

This work proposes a structural model highlighting the research skills of undergraduate students. Due to the stages in their research project implementation, mentoring students becomes a crucial initiative in higher education institutions. Despite substantial progress in the literature linking mentoring and skills development, there is a lack of greater emphasis on research skills, especially for undergraduate students facing research work for the first time. Consequently, the direct relation between mentoring and research skills may not be straightforward. Thus, driven by social learning theory, the proposed model highlights the mediating effects of information literacy constructs and competency development on the relationship between mentoring and research skills. An empirical study of 539 participants via Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling supports six of the seven hypothesized paths. Three major theoretical contributions arise from the findings. Firstly, mentoring improves information-seeking skills and information-sharing behaviors and facilitates students’ competency development due to the technical knowledge transfer from the faculty mentor to student mentees. Secondly, information literacy constructs and competency development promote research skills, emphasizing that students with those behaviors and capacities will achieve enhanced research skills. Finally, our findings suggest that mentoring does not directly translate to improved research skills; instead, information-seeking and sharing behaviors and competency development fully mediate such a link. Thus, mentors must shape these behaviors for mentoring to develop students’ research skills. Theoretical and practical insights are outlined from these findings for university leadership to inform the design of mentoring initiatives for undergraduate students.

Non-Obvious Connections Between Information Literacy and Online Payments

The importance of information literacy in today’s digital world is increasingly emphasized. This is particularly evident in the context of using digital financial services. This article aims to investigate whether there is a relationship between information literacy and online payment preferences among a student population and whether there are gender differences in online payment habits. An online survey was conducted among students in Osijek examining information literacy and the types of goods they purchase and pay for through online financial services. Of the 408 respondents, the majority were female (86.27%), who were more likely to buy and pay for clothing, while men were most likely to make payments for particular features of video games. Differences were also found in the tendency to make online payments. Because no obvious linear relationships were found between reported information literacy and other variables, a neural network model with a multilayer perceptron (NN) architecture was developed to classify participants according to their reported information literacy level. The best overall classification accuracy of the NN was 73.17%. The NN and its sensitivity analysis revealed some hidden patterns that can help educational institutions develop information literacy and digital financial literacy programs for their students.
