Research on the factors and path of sports industry development in China: A fsQCA study of 31 provinces.

The advancement of the sports industry's development constitutes a critical concern shared by regional authorities and the scholarly community, reflecting its significant role in economic and social development. This study employs a Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) methodology to examine the 31 provincial-level administrative units in China. The objective is to elucidate the influence of technological, organizational, and environmental factors on the industry's development level, considering both a holistic national framework and dissected regional approaches (Eastern, Central, and Western China). This paper's contribution to the literature is structured around the following core findings: (1) The study establishes that a singular condition does not suffice as an essential prerequisite for achieving a heightened development state within the sports industry. (2) At the national level, there are three pathways to enhance the development level of the sports industry, specifically identified as "network-human resources dominant pathway," "technological innovation-human resources dominant pathway," and "comprehensive synergistic pathway."(3) From a regional perspective, the Eastern region has two pathways for sports industry enhancement: "network-economic pathway" and "comprehensive synergistic pathway." The Central region follows a "technology pathway," while the Western region has three pathways: "organization-environment pathway," "network-organization-environment pathway," and "organization pathway."(4) The synthesis of these findings underscores the multifactorial nature of sports industry development, suggesting a paradigm where diverse routes can lead to equivalent outcomes. This heterogeneity indicates that provinces or regions can tailor their development strategies to their unique situational contexts.

A Study on the Contribution of Vocational Education and Training to the Industrial Development in China

Vocational education and training are an important part of China’s national education system. The two essential characteristics of employment orientation and social service determine that vocational education has a closer connection with social production than other types of education. At present, China’s economic development is in a new stage of transformation and upgrading. The new normal of the economy will inevitably require a corresponding new normal of vocational education and training. The transformation of social needs will eventually lead to changes in the composition of the workforce. Vocational education and training should be aligned with the characteristics of the new normal economy. Using mixed research methods, this study focuses on vocational education and training and explores how it contributes to industrial development in China.

Measurement of Carbon Total Factor Productivity in the Context of Carbon–Electricity Market Collaboration: An Application of Biennial Luenberger Productivity Index

China’s industrial sector generally relies on electricity as its main source of energy, and industrial production can be affected if there are problems with the electricity supply. In order to deal with the uncertain electricity supply and achieve the “dual carbon” target, the industrial sector needs to take effective measures to enhance carbon total factor productivity (CTFP). We use the biennial Luenberger productivity index (BLPI) to try to provide strategies for low-carbon industrial development in China. The results indicate that the overall CTFP of China’s industrial sector showed an increasing trend from 2006 to 2019. Technology change was the main contributor to the change in CTFP, but fluctuations in efficiency change remained a challenge. Differences were observed between the light industry sector (LIS) and the heavy industry sector (HIS) in terms of changes in CTFP, with LIS showing more stable changes and HIS experiencing larger fluctuations. Most sub-sectors showed increased CTFP during the sample period. R&D investment and R&D personnel have a positive impact on CTFP, while energy structure is found to hinder CTFP. According to the research results of this study, we offer the corresponding policy implications. This study is the first to explore the balance between low-carbon goals and industrial production from the perspective of improving CTFP, providing a new viewpoint on the contributions of technological innovation to solving socio-economic issues.

Research on the Performance Path of Industrial Green Total Factor Productivity in the Context of High-Quality Development—Based on Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis

Improving industrial green total factor productivity (GTFP) is essential for achieving high-quality industrial development in China. To explore this perspective, we examined 30 provinces as case samples and applied a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis in order to analyze the factors of technological innovation, human capital, green consumption, environmental regulation, the Internet, and external openness in relation to industrial GTFP. The findings of this study show that the configuration path of industrial GTFP has multiple concurrencies. Specifically, three paths were identified as leading to high industrial GTFP, namely, the “total factor type”, “open-technology drive type”, and “technology-human drive type”. Meanwhile, the two configuration paths of non-high-industrial GTFP displayed an asymmetric relationship. Overall, these findings are crucial in revealing the path to improving industrial GTFP and achieving high-quality industrial development in China. The “total-factor-type” and “open-technology-drive-type” paths were the most prevalent in the eastern region, while the central area leaned more towards the “technology-human drive type”. This study offers valuable recommendations and insights for policymakers and scholars interested in promoting the development of industrial GTFP.

A Comparative Analysis of Petrochemical Industry Development in China and The United States.

Measurement and Dynamic Trend Research on the Development Level of Rural Industry Integration in China

China is a traditional agricultural country, and the integration of rural industries has become an essential policy direction for the current strategy of agricultural modernization in China. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of integrated rural industry development in China, identify problems in the development process, and combine analysis of related theories and practices of rural industry integration to propose strategies to enhance the level of integrated rural industry development in China. Hence, this paper, rooted in the integration of rural industries, cross-industry, industry extension, industry agglomeration, and industry penetration, sets up a measurement index system. Using provincial panel data from 2011 to 2020, the paper measures the level of integrated development in rural industries across China and its 31 provinces. Research indicates that during the sample period, the overall level of integrated development in rural industries in various provinces in China has shown an upward trend. Development among the eastern, central, and western regions is highly uneven, but this disparity has been gradually narrowing in recent years. Furthermore, the levels of integrated development in different provinces exhibit significant spatial agglomeration effects. The development level of neighboring regions significantly impacts the province’s development status.

Trends in the Future of China's Retail Pharmacy Industry

Retail pharmacies are the largest market for the sale of medicines in China. In recent years, outbound mergers and acquisitions have become an essential means of promoting the growth of the pharmaceutical industry, considering the industry's increasing concentration and degree of the chain. Furthermore, the background of the rise of domestic e-commerce combined with the stimulus of the covid-19 pandemic has ushered in a golden period for online pharmacy development. In addition, from the perspective of the policy environment, the prescription outflow trend will also drive the development of the pharmacy industry. In the future, the competition between online and physical pharmacies will become more intense. Chinese leading pharmaceutical companies have all made strategic moves to respond to changes in the industry. By introducing an example of a leading domestic company acquiring a small pharmacy, this paper aims to provide insight to investors into the strategic thinking of pharmacies in the context of the current industry development in China.

Government regulatory policies for digital transformation in small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises: an evolutionary game analysis

In recent years, digital transformation (DT) has become an inevitable choice for manufacturing enterprises to achieve sustainable development. As a large number of enterprise groups, small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMMEs) play an important role in the industrial development of China. However, due to insufficient resource investment, high transformation costs, lack of talents, and unclear transformation pathways, how the government can help SMMEs carry out DT has become an important research topic. Based on this background, this study considers the strategies of government, third-party demonstration enterprises (TDEs) and SMMEs, develops and builds a three-party evolutionary game model, and puts forward a governance mechanism for effective DT strategies (TDEs guide DT and SMMEs conduct DT). This study has drawn many interesting conclusions. (1) If the government chooses not to regulate, when SMMEs are risk-neutral, the government only needs to increase the rewards for SMMEs to effectively promote DT. When SMMEs are risk-averse, the government needs to increase the penalties for SMMEs and increase the rewards for TDEs to effectively promote DT. (2) If the government chooses to regulate, when SMMEs are risk-neutral, the government needs to increase the penalties for both TDEs and SMMEs to effectively promote DT. When SMMEs are risk-averse, the government only needs to increase penalties on SMMEs or TDEs to effectively promote DT. (3) When SMMEs are risk-averse, the government’s best choice is regulation. Because when the government does not regulate, DT may fail even if the government increases the penalties for SMMEs and increases the incentives for TDEs.

Study on the coupling coordination development of China's multidimensional digital economy and industrial carbon emission efficiency.

Exploring the coupling coordination between China's digital economy (DE) and industrial carbon emission efficiency (ICEE) is of great significance for achieving sustainable development goals. In the study, a multidimensional indicator system was established to evaluate DE, and spatiotemporal analysis and network analysis methods were used to reveal the dynamic evolution characteristics of DE and ICEE. The coupling coordination model and convergence model were adopted to explore the development trend of coupling coordination between DE and ICEE. The results show that the ICEE and DE in various provinces of China exhibit obvious spatial heterogeneity and spillover effects. Currently, the coupling coordination degree between the development of China's DE and ICEE has reached the level of primary coordination or above. The coupling coordination degree between DE and ICEE in the eastern, central, and northeastern regions has reached an intermediate level or above, with the highest degree in the eastern region. The fluctuation of China's ICEE has consistent σ-convergence and β-convergence, and the convergence effect is higher with the introduction of the DE than without it. The condition β-convergence result indicates that underdeveloped regions can narrow the gap between their ICEE and that of developed regions by utilizing their resource endowments, industrial structure, human capital, and other conditions, improving emission reduction measures and policies. This study provides a certain reference for the green and low-carbon development of industry in China and other developing countries in the digital economy era.

How can China’s coal cities achieve high-quality development?—An empirical study based on the “resource curse” hypothesis

The relationship between the utilization of natural resources and high-quality economic growth has always been a concern of the academic community. China’s coal cities to varying degrees suffer from population outflow, economic stagnation or even negative growth, precipitous drop in housing prices, serious environmental damage, and other problems. There is a negative correlation from the perspective of location between the enrichment of coal resources and economic development in China, confirming the existence of coal “resource curse” in China’s interprovincial scope. Through establishing quantitative models. This article analyzes the transmission mechanism of the nonlinear impact of coal industry development on regional total factor productivity (TFP) from the 2 paths of industrial structure evolution and factor allocation efficiency. The sample panel data of 44 coal cities in China from 2003 to 2017 are examined to empirically test the impact of coal industry development in China’s coal cities on TFP and its transmission mechanism. In the coal industry development, the service industry is being squeezed out to some degree, while the manufacturing industry is suffered from “double deindustrialization” and severe shrinkage. Such an industrial structure transformation is one of the transmission paths of “resource curse.” The development of human capital (HC) and finance has a threshold effect on the impact of the coal industry development on the TFP of coal cities. The excessive growth of coal industry has a restraining effect on the development level of HC and finance that influences the efficiency of resource allocation, resulting in failure of such industries to promote the TFP. With the improvement of HC and finance sectors in coal cities, the development of coal industry has promoted the TFP. Therefore, this article holds that the government should aim at improving the efficiency of factor allocation, formulate scientific and reasonable industrial adjustment policies, upgrade industrial structure, and actively develop manufacturing and producer services. Meanwhile, in the process of coal city development, it should pay attention to improving HC input, actively develop green finance industry to promote the development of capital market, and promote the green transformation of coal industry. Actively develop new sources of energy. The sustainable development of coal cities should be guided according to different life cycle stages in order to achieve healthy and sustainable development and break the “resource curse.”

Effects of microbial agent application on the bacterial community in ginger rhizosphere soil under different planting years.

Ginger is one of the important spice crops in the world. Due to the prevalence of ginger wilt disease and the lack of effective prevention and control methods, the planting area, total production and value have declined sharply, which have become a key factor restricting ginger industry development in China. Understanding the influence of microbial agents on the rhizosphere microbiota of ginger will facilitate developing novel technologies for the prevention and control of ginger wilt disease. In the new planting and continuous cropping ginger fields, using large-root ginger and microbial agents, two inoculation levels (inoculation and no inoculation) were designed, and high-throughput sequencing technology was used to study the bacterial community structure in the rhizosphere soil at mature stage of ginger. The results showed that newly planted ginger showed a significant yield advantage over continuous cropping ginger, with a yield increase of 39% to 56%, and the lowest ginger wilt disease index. The community structure at the phylum level of soil bacteria in each treatment was very similar to that in the control, but the abundance of some taxonomic units changed significantly. The four dominant phyla of bacteria in mature ginger rhizosphere soil were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria, accounting for 72.91% to 89.09% of the total. The microbial agent treatment of continuous cropping had beneficial microorganisms such as Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes with abundances increased by 12.2% and 17.1%, respectively, compared to the control. The microbial inoculant treatment of newly planted ginger increased the abundance of Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes by 34.4% and 10.7%, respectively, compared to the control. The composition of bacterial communities were affected by changes in soil properties. Redundancy analysis showed that the hydrolysable nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, and organic matter were significantly related to the composition of soil bacterial communities. Therefore, the microbial agents can not only promote the proliferation of beneficial microorganisms in the continuous cropping soil but also further reshape the soil bacterial community structure by changing the soil physicochemical properties such as effective phosphorus. These results provided a reference for related research on the impact of ginger continuous cropping on soil environment and soil management improvement in ginger fields.

Sediment core records and impact factors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Chinese lakes

Lake sediment is a natural sink for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAH sedimentation characteristics and their impact factors of Chinese lakes have mainly been qualitative assessed. However, quantitative impacts of PAH sedimentation from different factors have not been well analyzed. To fill this gap, we screened PAH sedimentation records from the literature, for 51 lakes in China and other regions of the world, to identify historical concentration variation and the impact factors of PAHs in different regions, in lake sediment. The results show that PAH concentrations in the sediment core in the selected Chinese lakes (478 ± 812 ng/g dry weight (dw)) were significantly lower than those in North America (5518 ± 6572 ng/g dw) and Europe (3817 ± 4033 ng/g dw). From 1900 to 2015, most of the lakes in China showed an increasing trend of PAH sedimentation concentrations, with the lakes in Southeastern China showed a decreasing trend of PAH concentration in the period of 2001–2015, which was later than the peak times shown in Western countries (1941–1970). The 2-3-ring PAHs were the main components in the sediment core of Chinese lakes, but the proportion to the total PAHs decreased from 72% in 1900–1940 to 55% in 2001–2015. Generalized additive modeling (GAM) was adopted to simulate the associations between PAH sedimentation records and the impact factors. There are large regional variations of economic and industrial development in China. The impact factors of PAH accumulation in the lake sediments differ in different regions. However, population and the consumption of coal, pesticides, and fertilizer were identified to be the most important impact factors influencing PAH sedimentation. The Chinese government needs to strengthen control measures on pollutant discharge to reduce the anthropogenic impact of PAH sedimentation in lakes.

Therefore, this study in the under the background of "double carbon" target, through the relevant research results at home and abroad, the energy industry development in China made a comprehensive analysis, qualitative analysis of energy consumption of green economy development mechanism, and adopt the entropy right Topsis model, space measurement model respectively in 2011-2021 our country provincial panel data empirical analysis, to explore the mechanism of energy consumption mechanism to promote the optimization of energy consumption structure in our country, realize the sustainable development.

Research on forestry labor input measurement and forestry industry development in China

PurposeAt present, China’s forestry development is mainly driven by the traditional production factors such as forestry labor force, land resources and capital and thus the top priority of forestry development is to optimize forestry production factors. Scientific and effective forestry labor input has a significant role in promoting the development of forestry industry. Given that the actual input to forestry labor is not clear, the accuracy of the forestry industry development may be slightly affected. Based on the monitoring project of collective forest tenure reform (RCFT), this paper uses the survey data of 3,500 rural households in seven provinces of China from 2010 to 2014 and 2016 to 2017 to measure the actual labor force in China, and empirically analyzes and studies the factors influencing the development of forestry industry based on the provincial data of forestry in China, and further discusses the heterogeneous impact of forestry production factors on the development of forestry industry.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the generalized least squares estimation model is used to calculate the actual number of forestry labor in China, and then the Cobb–Douglas production function is selected to explore the influencing factors of forestry industry development.FindingsThe results show that the actual number of forestry labor force in China continues to decline and the degree of reduction varies from different regions. The forestry labor is a major factor that promotes the development of the forestry industry, but this promotion is affected by the low matching degree between the forestry production factors and thus further inhibits the development of the forestry industry. Due to the time lag of the reform, the implementation of RCFT first weakens and then promotes the development of forestry production. Further on, the forestry labor input is heterogeneous in land resource endowment, forestry investment source and the proportion of management personnel.Originality/valueTherefore, researches show that the feasible way to promote the development of forestry industry is to expand the scale of forestry labor force, optimize the mutual allocation of forestry production factors, enhance the input of human capital in forestry and deepen the RCFT.

Predicting the Potential of China’s Geothermal Energy in Industrial Development and Carbon Emission Reduction

The goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality requires major systemic changes in the energy supply sector. As one of the major non-carbon-based energy sources, geothermal energy is characterized by large reserves, stability, and reliability. This paper summarizes the current situation of geothermal resource endowment and industrial development in China. Based on this, a system dynamics model of geothermal industrialization is established, and the potential of geothermal industrialization and carbon emission reduction in China is predicted. The prediction results show that the growth rate of geothermal heating and cooling areas in the next 40 years will follow a trend of acceleration followed by deceleration. China’s geothermal energy heating and cooling area will reach 11.32–14.68 billion m2 by 2060, an increase of about 9–12 times compared to 2020. The proportion of geothermal heating and cooling area to the total building area in China will reach 13.77–17.85%. The installed capacity of geothermal power generation will reach 14,452.80–20,963.20 MW by 2060 under the scenario with electricity subsidies. The proportion of geothermal energy in China’s primary energy consumption structure will reach 3.67–5.64%. The annual carbon emission reduction potential of the geothermal industry will reach 436–632 million tons, equivalent to 4.41–6.39% of China’s carbon emissions in 2020. The results of this study can provide a reference for the healthy and high-quality development of China’s geothermal industry and help to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.

Evaluation of the Mechanism and Effectiveness of Digital Inclusive Finance to Drive Rural Industry Prosperity

Digital inclusive finance is an important policy for promoting rural industrial development in China. Can digital inclusive finance effectively contribute to the development of rural industries? What is its driving mechanism? Clarifying these questions can: (1) Release the value of digital inclusive finance; (2) Strengthen its driving role in rural industrial development; and (3) Implement the concept of inclusive development to give rural industrial subjects a greater sense of access and well-being. Based on the interpretation of the connotation of rural industrial prosperity, this paper constructs a theoretical framework of “digital inclusive finance—alleviating financing constraints—rural industrial prosperity”. Using the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2011 to 2020, the study adopts the entropy weight method to measure the rural industry prosperity index; at the same time, it constructs a panel regression model to conduct benchmark tests, mediating effect tests and heterogeneity tests on the mechanisms and effects of digital inclusive finance to promote rural industrial prosperity. The article finds that digital inclusive finance effectively drives rural industrial prosperity; the alleviation of financing constraints plays a fully mediating role; the effect is significant in less economically developed regions. Therefore, this article proposes policy recommendations to advance rural digital construction, promote the digital transformation of traditional financial institutions, strengthen the regulation of internet-inclusive finance, and enhance the financial literacy of inclusive groups.

Green Investment, Technological Progress, and Green Industrial Development: Implications for Sustainable Development

Environmental reformation of old-fashioned sectors and the establishment of new pro-ecological businesses via green investment are the main driving forces behind the revolution in the Chinese industrial sector. Green investment aids in the growth of environmentally friendly industries. Hence, the primary objective of the analysis is to investigate the impact of green investment and technological progress on green industrial development. The results of the unit root tests encourage us to apply the ARDL model. The short and long-run estimates attached to R&D expenditures are positively significant, confirming that increasing R&D expenditures help improve the industrial structure. Similarly, the short and long-run estimates attached to green finance investment are positively significant, signifying that green investment benefits the industrial structure. Empirical findings show that technology significantly aggravates industrial structure development in only the long run. Thus, for green industrial development in China, there is a need to increase green investment and technological development up to top-level design.

Digital Finance and Advanced Manufacturing Industry Development in China: A Coupling Coordination Analysis

The coordinated development of digital finance and the advanced manufacturing industry is vital for high-quality economic development. Based on the provincial data of China from 2012 to 2020, this study applied the coupling coordination degree model, σ convergence model and Dagum–Gini coefficient decomposition method to analyze the coupling coordination level, convergence characteristics, spatial differences and sources of digital financial and advanced manufacturing industry development in China. The results show that the coupling coordination level between the two has crossed from the run-in transition stage to the coordinated development stage and shows a rapid growing trend. The coupling coordination degree of the eastern region is the highest, followed by the central and western regions. It has an obvious convergence trend, and the overall difference is significantly reduced. The intra-regional difference of coupling coordination degree in the western region is the largest, indicating the comparatively larger gap in the development of digital finance and the advanced manufacturing industry among western provinces. The inter-regional difference between the east–west regions is the largest and is the main source of overall differences, which proves the fact of unbalanced development between regions. It is suggested to adopt differentiated regional policies to promote the coordinated development of digital finance and the advanced manufacturing industry.

Reasonable intrinsic microstructure of microcrystalline graphite for high-rate and long-life potassium-ion batteries

Carbon materials, including non-graphite carbon and graphite have been extensively studied as anode materials for Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). However, due to the slow kinetics of potassiation, it is still challenging to obtain anode materials with rate capability, good stability and low price. Microcrystalline graphite (MG) possesses ordered graphene layers and abundant interparticle voids and correspondingly undergoes a surface adsorption behavior at first and then the intercalation of K+ at low potential, which is conductive to high energy density. In addition, the larger interplanar spacing of MG with suitable crystalline size can stand for the fluctuation of interlaminar spacing caused by repeated K+ bombardment because strain in such structure can be relaxed due to sufficiently available free space. When used as anode material of PIBs, microcrystalline graphite can deliver a high reversible capacity of 249 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles in a readily-available electrolyte of 0.8 M KPF6 in EC/DEC (1:1 vol%), which offer a significant cost-saving opportunity. Furthermore, compared to flake graphite and soft carbon, MG exhibits the highest capacity of 139 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1 after 500 cycles. Our investigations will greatly promote the MG's industrial development in China.

Embedding the poor into the industrial system: what we can learn from poverty alleviation through industrial development in China

ABSTRACT Poverty alleviation through industrial development in China contributes to the long-standing debate on how the poor could benefit from the development. It creates four industrial organizing approaches (i.e. households operating independently, intermediary organizations providing linkages, modern enterprise leading and asset income distribution) and three ways of participation for the rural poor (i.e. participating as petty commodity producers, wage workers and shareholders), in which productivity has been improved and production relations adjusted. While highlighting the specificity of China’s situation, this paper argues for the more general implications of China’s case for other developing countries due to its theoretical hybridity in addressing poverty alleviation and development.
