Taking into account a favorable environment with the growing computerization of medical records in medical offices, the development of hospital information systems and the diffusion of medical smart cards, it is now possible to envisage the generalization of the communication of digital information through new information technologies. The Réseau Santé Social will provide a certain number of basic functions with which new services could be offered to improve the management of medical information and the coordination of care. The intermediation platform RITHME with allow asynchronous communication between the participants of a sanitary sector, responding to the needs and expectations of the physicians working in private and public sectors. This platform has experience in the geographical area of Lille-Armentières (Nord), gathering 40 family doctors, two hospitals, and three labs, and will be expanded to generalize its offer.

Modeling Hospital Information Systems with Petri Nets

SummaryIn the development of hospital information systems it is difficult to describe data and activities simultaneously and equivalently. Most of the methods used so far are only suitable for either data structures or functional modeling. In particular, it is not possible to comprehend the functional interdependence of hospital procedures.In this paper it is shown that Petri Nets are well suited for the development of complex software systems. Their exceptional properties are, on the one hand, the simulative capacities which allow to visualize interlinked and interdependent procedures of the real world. On the other hand, it is pointed out that Petri Nets comply with the demands of software engineering. In order to make these characteristics clear, two models from real developments are used: Firstly the organizational model of a small hospital and secondly the model of the data entry in the follow-up of tumor patients.

Standardization of hospital applications and the problems

The University of Southern California Center for Health Services Research has initiated an “AHIS (Automated Hospital Information Systems) Workbook Project”, for planning, design, evaluation and selection of computer systems for hospitals. A list of hospital computer applications was developed. Standardized descriptions of all of these were developed and validated by site visits and review by suppliers and users of hospital computer systems. The components of an Automated Hospital Information System were identified and categorized and means of evaluation of the completeness and utility of computerized hospital information systems were developed. These standardization hospital application descriptions are not a resource for planning and development of hospital information systems.
