Studying the Relationship Between Aircraft Stability and Shape Based on Hydrodynamics

In recent years, with the rapid development of industrial technology, the application of fluid mechanics in the industrial field has become more and more frequent and has been well developed. Of course, more and more scholars gradually pay attention to the development and application of fluid mechanics. As an important means of transportation in daily life, aircraft plays an important role in both civil and military affairs. The development of fluid mechanics has made an important contribution to solving the problems of aircraft design and stability. In this paper, the application and research status of hydrodynamics in aircraft design will be reviewed by means of literature analysis. At the same time, the application of hydrodynamics in aircraft design and life will be reviewed from many aspects, and the future development trend of hydrodynamics will be prospected. So far, there are many difficulties and hotspots in the development of fluid mechanics, and this paper will focus on these contents. I hope it can provide direction for its later development.

Recent Advances of Flow Rate Simulation in Gear Pumps

The gear pump is a rotating pump that moves and changes depending on the working volume that is created between the gear and the pump cylinder to transport or pressurize the liquid. It is one of the most widely used hydraulic pumping devices. It has been adopted in road equipment, conveyor systems, and other industrial machineries. Its performance is critical to the engineering equipment. With the development of fluid mechanics, the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) technique is widely used to predict the internal flow filed of gear pumps. CFD can provide researchers more intuitive observation and analysis to help the designers to enhance the effectiveness of gear pump. This paper summarizes the principle of flow simulation methods for gear pump and its applications. The research results and key findings are summarized. Defects of existing research are pointed out and suggestions for future research are provided. To sum up, this paper has a certain reference value for researchers who would like to know the hydraulic simulation process for gear pumps.

Mechanism and Performance Differences between the SSG/LRR-ω and SST Turbulence Models in Separated Flows

Accurate predictions of flow separation are important for aerospace design, flight accident avoidance, and the development of fluid mechanics. However, the complexity of the separation process makes accurate predictions challenging for all known Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) methods, and the underlying mechanism of action remains unclear. This paper analyzes the specific reasons for the defective predictions of the turbulence models applied to separated flows, explores the physical properties that impact the predictions, and investigates their specific mechanisms. Taking the Menter SST and the Speziale-Sarkar–Gatski/Launder–Reece–Rodi (SSG/LRR)-ω models as representatives, three typical separated flow cases are calculated. The performance differences between the two turbulence models applied to the different separated flow calculations are then compared. Refine the vital physical properties and analyze their calculation from the basic assumptions, modeling ideas, and construction of the turbulence models. The numerical results show that the underestimation of Reynolds stress is a significant factor in the unsatisfactory prediction of separation. In the SST model, Bradshaw’s assumption imposes the turbulent energy equilibrium condition in all regions and the eddy–viscosity coefficient is underestimated, which leads to advanced separation and lagging reattachment. In the SSG/LRR-ω model, the fidelity with which the pressure–strain term is modeled is a profound factor affecting the calculation accuracy.

Mathematical Principle Analysis of Separation Point Prediction

During the development of fluid mechanics, fluid separation is an important issue. So far, there is no mathematical formula to reveal and describe the essence of fluid separation. At the same time, due to the high cost and limitation of the experimental method, another method is urgently needed to predict the separation position of the fluid. After axiomatizing fluid mechanics and combining the principle of excited state of quantum mechanics, this paper reveals that fluid separation is a special form of fluid in an excited state, and deduces the state conditions of fluid separation. The research results of this paper provide new ideas for solving problems in fluid separation and engineering applications.

PIV measurement of the flow field in rectangular tunnel

The development of fluid mechanics is briefly reviewed and the importance of fluid flows to heat and mass transfer in nature as well as to science and engineering is outlined. This paper presents the experimental results of air flow in the rectangular tunnel which has four different exhaust outlets, each distance of which from the inlet is 0, 30, 60 and 90㎜ respectively. This experiment is conducted by using the olive oil as the tracer particles and the kinematic viscosity of the air flow is 1.51×10?? ㎡/s. The flow is tested at the flow rate of 1.3 ㎥/h and the velocity of 0.3 m/s. PIV technology can be used to make a good description of the smoke flow characteristics in the tunnel.

Although developments in fluid mechanics continue at a heady pace, and are reported in JFM at about 800 pages per month, things in the editorial management of JFM change only slowly. There is a continuity among the JFM Editorial Team and among the policies they espouse and implement that appears to be appreciated by the fluid mechanics community. A major change has, however, occurred from January 1999, in that George Batchelor has, after 43 years as Editor, stepped down from the day-to-day handling of papers and from the formulation of policies and practices, and allowed himself to be named on our masthead as Founding Editor. I say ‘allowed’ because George's initial wish was not to be so named, feeling that this might be seen as an immodest and presumptuous title. But Founding Editor is exactly what George was and is. He launched JFM in May 1956, having persuaded Taylor & Francis to be the publisher and printer, and having enlisted the help of G. F. Carrier, W. C. Griffith and M. J. Lighthill as Associate Editors, and T. Brooke Benjamin and I. Proudman as Assistant Editors. Then, as now, all members of the JFM Editorial Team were to work autonomously in the handling of papers, with complete delegated authority and similar workloads, but all following similar procedures and with similar philosophies, and all under the watchful eye of G. K. B.

Hydraulic characterization of aquifers, reservoir rocks, and soils: A history of ideas

Estimation of the hydraulic properties of aquifers, petroleum reservoir rocks, and soil systems is a fundamental task in many branches of Earth sciences and engineering. The transient diffusion equation proposed by Fourier early in the 19th century for heat conduction in solids constitutes the basis for inverting hydraulic test data collected in the field to estimate the two basic parameters of interest, namely, hydraulic conductivity and hydraulic capacitance. Combining developments in fluid mechanics, heat conduction, and potential theory, the civil engineers of the 19th century, such as Darcy, Dupuit, and Forchheimer, solved many useful problems of steady state seepage of water. Interest soon shifted towards the understanding of the transient flow process. The turn of the century saw Buckingham establish the role of capillary potential in governing moisture movement in partially water‐saturated soils. The 1920s saw remarkable developments in several branches of the Earth sciences; Terzaghi's analysis of deformation of watersaturated earth materials, the invention of the tensiometer by Willard Gardner, Meinzer's work on the compressibility of elastic aquifers, and the study of the mechanics of oil and gas reservoirs by Muskat and others. In the 1930s these led to a systematic analysis of pressure transients from aquifers and petroleum reservoirs through the work of Theis and Hurst. The response of a subsurface flow system to a hydraulic perturbation is governed by its geometric attributes as well as its material properties. In inverting field data to estimate hydraulic parameters, one makes the fundamental assumption that the flow geometry is known a priori. This approach has generally served us well in matters relating to resource development primarily concerned with forecasting fluid pressure declines. Over the past two decades, Earth scientists have become increasingly concerned with environmental contamination problems. The resolution of these problems requires that hydraulic characterization be carried out at a much finer spatial scale, for which adequate information on geometric detail is not forthcoming. Traditional methods of interpretation of field data have relied heavily on analytic solutions to specific, highly idealized initial‐value problems. The availability of efficient numerical models and versatile spreadsheets of personal computers offer promising opportunities to relax many unavoidable assumptions of analytical solutions and interpret field data much more generally and with fewer assumptions. Currently, a lot of interest is being devoted to the characterization of permeability. However, all groundwater systems are transient on appropriate timescales. The dynamics of groundwater systems cannot be understood without paying attention to capacitance. Much valuable insights about the dynamic attributes of groundwater systems could be gained by long‐term passive monitoring of responses of groundwater systems to barometric changes, Earth tides, and ocean tides.

Recent developments in the engineering aspects of rheology

This paper presents, in tabular form, a complete listing of the various types of behavior exhibited by real fluids as known at the present time. The position of non-Newtonian materials within this list is discussed in some detail. On the basis of this background the final part of the paper reviews recent developments in fluid mechanics (including fluid agitation) and heat transfer in systems exhibiting non-Newtonian behavior.
